The drive applies DC to two of the windings of the motor which causes a spinning rotor to slow down as it rotates through the stationary magnetic field. The magnetic field produced in the rotor bars is opposite to the stationary field. Some VFDs only use DC injection at a standstill, this prevents the rotor from freely spinning.
