We lost an electronics legend in June. Tech Time Traveller 2023-07-01 | Don Lancaster passed away June 7th, 2023 at the age of 83. His impact as an author and electronics engineer cannot be overstated; even people like myself who were born long after his most consequential projects were created revere him as a guru; a teacher on another level. It''s based on a design used by other videotex service providers like US Videotel and France's Minitel. Like most videotex services Bell's floundered and they asked for the terminals back. Many users chose to keep them as they were still usable with computerized Bulletin Board Systems (BBS). It offered a way for people who couldn't or wouldn't spend on a home computer to get online. Some of these units had RS232 ports in the back which allowed use as a general purpose serial terminal!
