Mixing Tips With Rudy EP1 - Vocals The Delta Riggs 2022-08-13 | Cutting Straight to the chase, a quick and concise look through the basic mix chain that's used on mixing vocals for "Fake That" that hopefully will give everyone working on tracks at home a few extra moves to add to their repertoire. Since I breezed through things quickly, here's a list of plugins that I used in the video. I think most of these manufacturers might do a 2 week free trial (possibly longer during this Covid-19 thing) so worth checking that out. If not, there are usually other factory alternatives to the type of plugin I used in most basic DAWs.First Plugin was from the Slate VMR (Virtual Mix Rack) it was a Virtual Console ChannelSecond was a "Decapitator" From Sound Toys. It's like a saturation / distortion / plugin that emulates a bunch of saturation styles (selected down the bottom in the different styles) From memory there is one that models off a tape machine, a Neve pre amp, and two types of tube drive made famous by the culture vulture rack thing. (I usually just flick through the style options and leave it on which one I think sounds best) Fab Filter have Saturn which is cool too, actually all the fab filter stuff is rad, and they do a 2 week free trial (you can always commit the plugins to the track once you're happy if the trial is about to expire)Third is a 7 band parametric EQ, straight out of the factory Protools plugin bundle. Every DAW will have something like this.Third was a Waves C6 Multi-band. It's a Multi-band compressor, where you basically set it to compress different frequency bands in different ways. I think Logic and Ableton might have a factory multi band built in? Fab Filter do a really good one too (Fab Filter MB) where you could set it up in a similar fashion to this. They do a 2 week free trial on plugins too.\The Third Plugin was a Slate Virtual Mix Rack with an 1176 Style compressor , an SSL Style EQ, and a Neve Style EQ. Waves do a version of all of these styles of vintage modelled gear , so do Brainworx and plugin boutique have some stuff like this too. if you want an easy way to do parallel compression, look for one that has a "Blend option, if you want another way to do this, you can just use a bus send to send the vocal to another aux that has a compressor on it, then blend it up underneath (this way you can also EQ it differently too!) , if that makes sense.. If not, hit me up in the comments, or wait till I do the parallel comp tutorial.The Next Plugin was a De-Esser from Eiosis, alternatives are Fab Filters De-Esser, or just your standard de lesser that comes with the DAW you're on.Next one is a UAD LA-2A comp / limiter, this is an optical style comp that I chuck on the end of the chain sometimes, I sometimes use LA3As, or Fairchild, something that is a nice compressor to compliment the 1176 style on doing the quicker limiting, it generally doesn't do much, and I flick between compress and limit and see which one I like. Protools has a stock one called bomb factory , I think Logic's stock compressor set to Optical is like this? (just look at the tape of settings it has on it, usually it'll look similar to this) not sure about Ableton? but also Waves and a bunch of other plugin designers have versions of this.Last one is a VTM Virtual tape machine from Slate Digital. This is just adding a bit of vibe at the end. Have a shot at any other "Tape Saturation" or similar plugin. Waves do a bunch, UAD do a bunch, Plugin Boutique probably has this style of thing kicking around.EFFECTSThe Effects I was using was a Microsoft by Sound Toys, this is emulating a micro pitch shift preset on the Eventide Harmoniser, you can get something similar by using a stereo Chorus (but not set to too hectic) or a spreader plugin, or if you only have a stereo delay try setting one side to like, 30ms and the other to 50ms and put a bit of depth and rate in there so it moves a bit and you should get something similar? also set the wet blend to 100% wet effect.Second ones were Echoboy by sound toys. A good bloody echo plugin. Similar Plugins will be any Echo / Delay Plugins that emulate a tape style delay. Pretty sure most DAWS come with a version of a tape delay plugin nowadays. Waves H Delay is cool too. As are any UAD tape delay plugins. Lastly I had a Plate Reverb from Valhalla Vintage Verb on there. I use the UAD EMT 140 plate too. Most DAWs will have a plate style reverb built in, but you can also have a look at Digidesign Space (which is free with protools now I think?) and waves do a version of EMT plates in the abbey road collection (think there are free trials of waves plugs).Hit me up if you'd like me to expand on anything down below yo.\mn/
