In the halls of power: Berkeley Haas economists on advising world leaders Berkeley Haas 2023-02-14 | Professor Ulrike Malmendier, Professor Catherine Wolfram, and Dean Ann Harrison are economists at the top of their fields who have taken their expertise outside the ivory tower in the interest of the public good. Malmendier, a behavioral economist who is the Edward J. and Mollie Arnold Professor of Finance at Haas and a professor in Berkeley’s Department of Economics, is serving as an advisor to Germany’s government on the country’s Council of Economic Experts. Wolfram, a leading energy economist, was appointed by President Joe Biden as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Climate & Energy Economics in the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where she served from 2021 to 2022 (she is currently on leave as a visiting professor at Havard’s Kennedy School of Government). Deans Speaker Series | Alan Lock, MBA 11, Director - Business Development and Operations, Icarus Or Berkeley Haas 2021-08-18 | Alan Lock is a Berkeley Leader who embodies resilience, innovation and perseverance. At age 24, while training to become a submarine officer with the British Royal Navy, Alan suddenly lost much of his sight due to macular degeneration. After his diagnosis, he opted to to move forward rather than give up -- amongst other things, becoming a Guinness World Record as the first visually impaired person to row across the Atlantic Ocean, and then becoming the first visually impaired person to trek to the South Pole. Alan’s accomplishments go beyond these physical feats; continuing to apply his problem-solving skills to complete his MBA, then to his strategy & operations role at British Telecom, and most recently to successfully starting his own business. We will hear Alan’s story of incredible resiliency as part of the Week Zero theme, Aspiration@Haas. Judy Huemann helped set up the first Center for Independent Living in Berkeley and serves as a living icon for millions of disabled Americans. As one of the “Fathers of the Internet”, 2005 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Vint Cerf has changed the way we communicate and experience the world. As a result of this work, disabled entrepreneurs like Diego Mariscal, CEO of 2Gether International, have been able to succeed and thrive in business. Diego’s not-for-profit organization, supports founders with disabilities, with the mission of reinventing the state of disability and the future of business.
