Bookbinding: Kettle Stitch Text Block Glacier Bear Art Room 2020-09-03 | Furthering our lessons in bookbinding, we're moving on to create a multiple signature text block, with the Kettle Stitch method. Virtual will need at least four signatures (I have four pieces of drawing paper in each signature), a push pin or and awl to punch holes, a hand-sewing needle (I am using a tapestry needle) and thread. For larger, thread, don't double up. Origami: Paper Cranes Glacier Bear Art Room 2021-01-06 | To start out our second semester for Virtual Art and in-classroom art, Haines students will be doing a small origami unit, starting with paper cranes. The folding of paper cranes, while originating from Japanese culture, has become a cross-cultural symbol of hope, protection, longevity and healing. As our community and school mourns the loss of our beloved Kindergarten teacher Jenae Larson, the students will fold cranes to hang around the elementary wing and in the Kindergarten classroom. Portrait Value Mapping Glacier Bear Art Room 2020-12-01 | This lesson was originally created by Alaskan educator Erica Ross, and shared through the Alaska Arts Education Consortium. Using scissors and a pencil, cut apart a black and photo photo portrait based on the grey value scale. Build up the puzzle pieces of your final drawn portrait, as you cut apart the printed version! This demo was recorded in class, working working with high school students (and while I was using a microphone).Materials you will need:- A black and white headshot printed on two different sheets of paper (one regular printer paper and one on a heavier card stock or drawing paper)- a piece of clean drawing paper, same size as the portrait- pencil- scissors- colored pencilsFollow along and enjoy the incredible results!

Nōtan Paper Cut-out: Positive and Negative Space Glacier Bear Art Room 2020-10-23 | Here's a quick teacher demonstration on paper cut-out Japanese Nōtans. Nōtan is a Japanese design concept involving the play and placement of light and dark elements as they are placed next to the other in the composition of art and imagery. We are using Nōtans as a part of our secondary art unit on utilizing negative space. For this project, you will need a pencil, a pair of scissors, gluestick, ruler, two squares of paper that have high contrast. In celebration of May's First Friday, I wanted to repost my Live Facebook video I created earlier in April. Watch as I walk through the show and talk about the individual pieces. I used local aerial images, topography and forest service maps to find my "subjects," the female forms that are hidden in the rivers and mountains of Southeast Alaska.
