IdeumIntroducing an integrated touchless interaction system that allows visitors to safely interact. https://touchless.design
Zero-touch technology will allow visitors to safely interact without touching the screen or any physical interface elements. The video explains the design approach. This work is part of an open-source initiative, touchless.design which was created to help benefit the museum field during the coronavirus pandemic. The prototypes are shown here interactive exhibits that Ideum has developed with the National World War II Museum and the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.
The hardware system will include a depth-sensing device, and an additional small display and LEDs will provide real-time feedback to visitors as they interact with the kiosk. In designing and developing this custom hardware and software system, Ideum is using the Leap Motion controller for touchless gesture recognition. The software for the system is being developed with the Unity3D authoring platform.
The open-source project received funding in part from Intel as part of their Pandemic Response Technology Initiative. The software, the case study, and other materials from this project will also be available on the Touchless.Design website. Ideum hopes to announce additional proof-of-concept projects for the initiative later this summer. To learn more about the initiative, please visit https://touchless.design.

Through an experience drawing children and adults alike, the community can engage with their local utility in a fun, interactive way to learn more about Chelan County PUD as well as energy and water conservation.
The interactive enlightens adult visitors about various potential energy savings in their home or small business, with an emphasis on Chelan County PUD’s rebate programs. When highlighted interactive items are tapped, pop-ups appear that may include video, images, text, and links to learn more. Visitors can email and text information to themselves from within the application, or find print materials located nearby.
On the lower part of the screen, younger visitors may interact with a coloring game, a balancing game about how much energy different home appliances use, and a fast-paced game in which they correct the energy and water-wasting antics of a messy Sasquatch.
Ideum designed all the custom animated illustrations to capture the character of Chelan County. The experience even evolves with the seasons, as the changing weather makes different energy-conservation tips more relevant. Ideum also designed and illustrated the rug to match the onscreen visuals.

The original Microsoft Kinect, first released ten years ago, was a revolutionary motion-sensing device. It was originally developed for gaming, but it didn’t take long for museums and design firms to begin developing exhibits that employed it. In fact, we still create experiences employing the Kinect (now the latest generation Azure) along with other devices from Intel, Orbbec, and the Stereolabs ZED camera.
While this technology has evolved and the range of devices has proliferated, the key design principles for incorporating such devices in experiences remain much the same. Visitors’ movements are tracked and lead to an outcome or event in the exhibit space; in some cases, we develop software (or use existing software) to do skeletal tracking, which allows detection of specific gestures, poses, or movements. For these experiences to be successful, visitors need to be aware that they can interact with the environment and know in real time that their actions are detected. In some cases, we need to provide specific instructions on where to stand or how to move. With most touchless interfaces, clear directions and active feedback are essential to ensure usability.Touchless Gesture-Based Interaction - Motion and Voice InterfaceIdeum2020-04-10 | A 2015 proof-of-concept with Intel shows the potential power of touchless interaction in the age of COVID-19. ideum.com/news/gesture-interaction-public-spaces-part1 Our own history with gesture and voice recognition goes back more than five years. For this project, we used the RealSense SR300, a short-range recognition system.Ideum - Interactive Exhibits Reel 1 - 2020Ideum2020-02-28 | Ideum develops deeply compelling and engaging interactive experiences for museums and other public institutions. http://www.ideum.com

The project features stunning 4K drone footage, interactive maps, motion sensor onboarding, and a 12-foot wide IR touch overlay.
With an arrival station nestled above the Coachella Valley at 8,516 feet above sea level, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway serves as the main way for guests to visit the upper recreation areas of Mount San Jacinto Park. Starting in the eastern foothills of Palm Springs, tram riders experience a stunning 12-and-a-half minute assent in the world’s largest “Rotair” tramcar. These large circular tramcars rotate as they ascend to give riders 360º views of the region’s breathtaking scenery.
The interactive trail viewer begins with a motion sensor activating an expanding attract screen displaying aerial footage of the mountain and views of the Coachella Valley. Visitors are invited to scroll through the various trails accessible from the Station, with dynamic maps and detailed descriptions of the trails provided by the California State Parks.
The project blended several experiences, from motion-controlled animated graphics to large format aerial video footage and updatable trail descriptions to reflect closures and seasonal weather conditions.

The table is clad in tens-of-thousands of dollars worth of Italian marble, has LED floor lighting, and 88 motion sensors. The table weighs more than 5,500 lbs--nearly 3 tons! Ideum developed the shop drawings and constructed the touch table. In addition, Ideum developed the sensor and light system. The table was fabricated in sections at Ideum’s fabrication studio. The interior structure was cut out on the studio’s CNC, glued up, and then fiberglassed to provide additional strength for the heavy Italian marble that would cover all sides of the table.
This project was a tremendous challenge; it isn’t every day you are asked to build a table so large that it has its own crawlspace, and so heavy that each section must be moved with a forklift. At the same time, the project was extraordinarily rewarding, as our team worked with great partners and pushed our design, fabrication, and technological skills to new levels. We are very proud to have such a diverse and skilled team of designers, engineers, fabricators, and developers to tackle such complex projects—and we look forward to the next one!Collection Explorer - Smithsonian National Museum of African ArtIdeum2020-01-15 | Ideum worked closely with the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C. to design and develop a compelling introduction to the Museum’s collection. ideum.com/portfolio
