The 1 John 5:7 / Johannine Comma Conference has come to an end, and in this video I look back at what happened, introduce the speakers who took part, and discuss some of the major issues examined during the conference.
I also explain why I have changed plans for the next conference. Rather than proceeding with a conference devoted to the Pericope Adulterae (John 7:53β8:11), I am now planning something much broader for December 2026:
THE SKEPTICS CONFERENCE β BIBLE CONTRADICTIONS EXAMINED
This new conference will examine some of the most common arguments used against the reliability, consistency and historical credibility of the Bible.
We will be looking at claims associated with prominent skeptical and critical voices including Bart Ehrman, Dan McClellan, C. J. Cornthwaite, Derek Lambert / MythVision, and many others.
Possible subjects include alleged contradictions involving Genesis, Noah, David, Saul, Judas, the genealogies of Jesus, the resurrection accounts, Paul's conversion, the chronology of Jesus' ministry, textual variants, Gospel authorship, the canon, the historical Jesus, the resurrection, Old Testament history, biblical manuscripts and many more.
The goal is simple: take the actual claims, examine the biblical text, investigate the historical and textual evidence, and see what the evidence actually shows.
I also discuss the kind of speakers and researchers needed for this conference and present a long list of possible subjects and "case files" that could be examined.
If you are interested in the Johannine Comma, Textus Receptus, King James Bible, biblical preservation, textual criticism, Bible contradictions, Christian apologetics, skeptical arguments or the historical reliability of Scripture, this is the beginning of a new series of investigations.

In this conference, Peter Van Kleek Sr and eight others, will examine the historical, textual, grammatical, and theological evidence surrounding one of the most debated passages in the New Testament.
The Johannine Comma has been at the centre of controversy for centuries. Is it a genuine part of the text of 1 John? Was it known in the early Church? Does the grammatical structure of 1 John 5:7β8 provide evidence for the longer reading? What did early Christian writers actually know and believe? And how should we evaluate the Greek, Latin, patristic, manuscript, and historical evidence?
This conference brings together nine speakers examining these questions from a variety of angles.
The question is not simply whether a modern critical edition prints the passage.
The real question is:
WHAT IS THE EVIDENCE?
The discussion surrounding 1 John 5:7 involves far more than a handful of Greek manuscripts. The evidence includes Greek manuscripts, Latin manuscripts, early Christian writers, quotations and allusions, grammatical considerations, theological context, textual transmission, historical witnesses, and the history of the printed Greek New Testament.
The Comma has frequently been dismissed with statements such as βthe earliest Greek manuscripts do not contain it.β But that statement alone does not settle the question. Textual criticism requires examination of the entire body of evidence, including the history and character of the witnesses that survive.
This conference therefore examines the Johannine Comma historically rather than merely assuming the conclusions of modern critical editions.
Among the important issues surrounding the passage are the testimony of early Christian writers, the relationship between 1 John 5:7 and 1 John 5:8, the grammatical structure of the Greek text, the Latin tradition, the history of the Comma in the Western Church, and the arguments made by scholars on both sides.
One particularly important question concerns the relationship between verses 7 and 8.
The two verses possess a striking parallel structure:
IN HEAVEN: The Father The Word The Holy Spirit βThese three are one.β
ON EARTH: The Spirit The Water The Blood βAnd these three agree in one.β
This parallelism has been an important part of the grammatical discussion surrounding the passage. The question is whether the masculine forms used in verse 8 make better sense when understood in relation to the corresponding construction in verse 7.
The historical question therefore becomes much larger than simply asking whether a particular fourth-century Greek manuscript contains the passage.
The Johannine Comma Conference brings together historical research, manuscript evidence, patristic testimony, Greek grammar, Latin textual history, and the history of textual criticism in order to examine the passage from multiple perspectives.
Whether you are a KJV defender, a Textus Receptus advocate, a Byzantine-text supporter, a critical-text advocate, a Greek student, a textual critic, a church historian, or simply interested in the history of the Bible, this conference is designed to put the evidence on the table.
The goal is not to avoid difficult evidence.
The goal is to examine it.

Welcome to the first presentation of the 1 John 5:7-8 Johannine Comma Conference.
In this conference, Jonathan Sheffield and eight others, will examine the historical, textual, grammatical, and theological evidence surrounding one of the most debated passages in the New Testament.
Jonathan Sheffieldβs presentation begins the conference by drawing attention to the evidence that must be considered when evaluating the Comma Johanneum.

DESCRIPTION:
In Part 3 of this series, I continue my examination of TurretinFan's articles on the Johannine Comma (1 John 5:7β8).
This episode focuses on Victor of Vita, the fifth-century North African bishop and historian, and the evidence surrounding the Carthage assembly of AD 484.
A major question is the claim that β460 bishopsβ witnessed the Johannine Comma as Scripture.
But where did the number 460 come from?
What does Victor of Vita actually say?
Who wrote the βBook of the Catholic Faithβ?
And what does this source actually tell us about 1 John 5:7?
We examine Victor of Vita's History of the Vandal Persecution, the Book of the Catholic Faith, the writings of Dom Ruinart and Edward Gibbon, and the modern claims surrounding this evidence.
We then turn to Jerome's Prologue to the Canonical Epistles and the fascinating textual issue surrounding the Latin reading committentes.
Does Jerome's Prologue speak of translators OMITTING the heavenly witnesses, or of JOINING the testimony of the Father, Word and Holy Spirit with the earthly witnesses?
We examine important Latin manuscript evidence, including Codex Fuldensis and other witnesses, and consider how this evidence has been used in the debate over the Johannine Comma.
The central question is simple:
Are we following the evidence wherever it leads β or are assumptions being used to eliminate inconvenient evidence?
This is a source-based investigation into 1 John 5:7, Victor of Vita, Carthage AD 484, Jerome's Prologue, Latin manuscripts, and the history of the Textus Receptus.
Check the sources. Examine the manuscripts. Read the evidence.

**The Witness of God is Greater β Mike Ferrando | 1 John 5:7 Part 8 | Frisingensia, Arius & Eusebius**
In Part 8 of my examination of Mike Ferrandoβs **The Witness of God is Greater**, we continue looking at the historical evidence for the **Johannine Comma (1 John 5:7)**.
This episode focuses particularly on the **Frisingensia Fragment**, an early Latin manuscript preserving an ante-Hieronymian form of 1 John containing the reading:
**βThere are three that bear testimony in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one.β**
We then move into the **Arian controversy** and examine the arguments of **John William Burgess** concerning the relationship between 1 John 5:7 and the fourth-century debates over the deity of Christ, the Trinity, and the *homoousios*.
We also examine **Constantineβs commission to Eusebius** to prepare fifty copies of Scripture, along with **Frederick Nolanβs** arguments concerning the possible influence of Eusebius on the transmission of the Greek New Testament.
Other topics include:
β’ Frisingensia / Freising Fragment β’ Pre-Hieronymian Latin evidence β’ 1 John 5:7-8 β’ Arius and Arianism β’ The Trinity and deity of Christ β’ Homoousios β’ John William Burgess β’ Constantine and Eusebius β’ Eusebian textual influence β’ Vaticanus and Alexandrinus β’ Eastern and Western textual traditions β’ Homoeoteleuton β’ Greek and Latin manuscript evidence β’ Early Church and patristic evidence β’ Textual transmission and preservation
The central question is:
**Which explanation best accounts for all of the surviving evidence surrounding 1 John 5:7?**

This episode moves deeper into the manuscript evidence and the arguments commonly used against the Comma. We examine claims concerning the Greek manuscripts of 1 John 5:7, frequently cited manuscript lists, and the importance of verifying individual witnesses rather than simply repeating secondary sources.
We also examine the early Greek manuscript evidence, including Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Vaticanus, Codex Alexandrinus, and other Greek witnesses, and ask an important question:
How much early manuscript evidence actually exists for 1 John 5:7β8?
I also discuss Jerome's testimony concerning the omission of the Father, Word, and Spirit, and how this testimony has been understood by Erasmus and Richard Simon.
Another major issue is TurretinFan's claim that the Johannine Comma, in the form recognized in the Textus Receptus, did not exist in Greek before Erasmus' fourth edition.
We examine the criteria being used to determine what qualifies as a Greek witness to the Comma, including differences in definite articles, word order, grammatical forms, and textual variation.
We also examine the argument that Greek witnesses such as Codex Ottobonianus and the Greek text of the Complutensian Polyglot are simply the result of back-translation from the Latin.
The central question throughout this investigation is simple:
Are these conclusions demonstrated by the evidence, or are assumptions being used to eliminate inconvenient evidence?
This is not a personal attack. It is a source-based examination of historical claims.
The goal is to examine the evidence carefullyβfrom the Greek manuscripts and Latin manuscripts to Jerome, Erasmus, the Complutensian Polyglot, and the history of the Textus Receptus.

**The Witness of God is Greater β Mike Ferrando | 1 John 5:7-8 Part 7 | Jeromeβs Prologue**
In Part 7 of our detailed examination of Mike Ferrandoβs **The Witness of God is Greater**, we turn our attention to one of the most important and controversial pieces of historical evidence surrounding **1 John 5:7-8: Jeromeβs Prologue to the Canonical Epistles**.
The Prologue contains a remarkable warning about translators who allegedly omitted the testimony concerning the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit from their Greek copies.
The question is whether this Prologue is genuinely Jeromeβsβand what its authenticity, historical setting, and textual claims mean for the history of the **Johannine Comma**.
In this episode we examine the evidence surrounding:
β’ Jeromeβs Prologue to the Canonical Epistles β’ The authenticity of the Prologue β’ Jerome and the Latin Vulgate β’ Jeromeβs knowledge of the Johannine Comma β’ 1 John 5:7 and the Three Heavenly Witnesses β’ The Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit β’ The relationship between the Greek and Latin textual traditions β’ Early Latin Christianity and the Comma β’ Patristic and historical evidence β’ Manuscript transmission of 1 John β’ The history of the Prologue and its reception β’ Arguments against Jeromeβs Prologue
The deeper question is:
If Jerome really wrote the Prologue, then it becomes an important historical witness in the story of the Johannine Comma.

**The Witness of God is Greater β Mike Ferrando | 1 John 5:7-8 Part 6 | The Case Is Winning**
The evidence keeps getting stronger.
In Part 6 of our detailed reading of Mike Ferrandoβs monumental work, **The Witness of God is Greater**, we continue examining the historical, manuscript, patristic, and textual evidence surrounding the **Johannine Comma β 1 John 5:7-8**.
Ferrando's work brings together hundreds of pages of historical documentation defending the reading:
**βThere are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit: and these three are one.β**
In this session we continue working through the evidence rather than simply repeating modern textual-critical conclusions.
We examine historical testimony, early Christian writers, manuscript evidence, the transmission of 1 John, the history of the Latin and Greek traditions, and the broader question of whether the Comma can really be dismissed as a late medieval addition.
The central question is simple:
**If 1 John 5:7 was not originally part of the New Testament, why does the historical evidence surrounding the passage become so complicated?**
And conversely:
**If the Comma is genuine, what evidence has survived to demonstrate it?**
This series is a careful reading and examination of Ferrando's research, with particular attention to primary sources, ancient witnesses, Church Fathers, manuscripts, historical testimony, and the history of the biblical text.
We will continue examining evidence connected with:
Whether you believe **1 John 5:7 is genuine, doubtful, or spurious**, the evidence deserves to be examined carefully.
This is not a quick overview.
This is a detailed investigation of the historical record.

Jay Cox vs. TurretinFan - Is This Text Original? by Nick Sayers 6Revolution2026-08-14 | Welcome to the FINAL episode of my examination of the debate:
**1 John 5:7 | C. Jay Cox vs. TurretinFan β Is the Johannine Comma Original?**
After examining the opening statements, manuscript arguments, historical claims, cross-examination, Jeromeβs Prologue, Codex Fuldensis, Cyprian, the Latin witnesses, and the Greek manuscript tradition, we now bring the entire case together.
This is the **FINAL VERDICT**.
What does the evidence actually demonstrate?
In this episode we step back and evaluate the cumulative evidence surrounding the Johannine Comma and the arguments presented in the debate.
We examine:
β’ The Greek manuscript evidence β’ The Latin manuscript tradition β’ Jeromeβs Prologue to the Canonical Epistles β’ Cyprian and the early patristic witnesses β’ Priscillian, Fulgentius and other Latin witnesses β’ Codex Fuldensis β’ Erasmus and his annotations β’ The historical development of 1 John 5:7 β’ The burden of proof in textual criticism β’ Historical testimony versus surviving Greek manuscripts β’ Absence of evidence versus evidence of absence β’ The importance of cumulative evidence β’ Whether the arguments against the Comma actually establish that it was not original
The central question throughout this series has never simply been:
**βHow many Greek manuscripts contain 1 John 5:7?β**
The deeper historical question is:
**What does the entire surviving body of evidence tell us about the history of this reading?**
Manuscripts are evidence.
The writings of the Church Fathers are evidence.
Latin witnesses are evidence.
Jeromeβs testimony is evidence.
The history of transmission is evidence.
Erasmusβ annotations are evidence.
Codex Fuldensis is evidence.
The question is not whether every individual witness is decisive. The question is whether the evidence, considered cumulatively, supports or undermines the traditional reading.
Did TurretinFan successfully answer the historical evidence presented by C. Jay Cox?
Did the arguments against the Johannine Comma actually establish that it was a later addition?
Or does the historical evidence present a more complicated picture?
Does the burden of proof fall where it has traditionally been placed?
And ultimately:
**Is the Johannine Comma guilty as chargedβor has the evidence been misunderstood?**
This final episode brings together the major arguments from the entire series and asks whether the case against 1 John 5:7 actually holds up under forensic examination.
**THE EVIDENCE. THE ANSWER. THE FINAL WORD.**

Jay Cox vs. TurretinFan β Is the Johannine Comma Original?**
As we continue examining TurretinFan's cross-examination of CJ Cox, we move beyond the surface-level exchange of questions and examine the historical assumptions that drive both sides of the discussion.
Did TurretinFan actually answer the historical evidence for the Johannine Comma?
Or did he simply assume the surviving Greek manuscript tradition represents the original text?
In this episode we examine some of the central issues surrounding the debate, including:
β’ The burden of proof in textual criticism
β’ Jerome's Prologue and its historical significance
β’ Cyprian and the earliest witnesses to the Johannine Comma
β’ Codex Fuldensis and the Latin tradition
β’ The relationship between evidence and historical reconstruction
One of the recurring themes throughout this series is that textual criticism should be built upon documentary evidenceβnot assumptions.
The surviving manuscripts are evidence.
The writings of the Church Fathers are evidence.
Jerome's testimony is evidence.
The history of the Latin Church is evidence.
The question is not whether every witness is perfect.
The question is whether all of the surviving evidence is being weighed fairly.
Throughout this series we continue asking the same simple question:
**What does the historical evidence actually demonstrate?**

This livestream continues our detailed reading of Mike Ferrando's monumental work, The Witness of God is Greater, one of the most comprehensive modern defenses of the Johannine Comma (1 John 5:7-8).
In Part 5 we examine the historical testimony surrounding the Heavenly Witnesses by working through Ferrando's research alongside the surviving documentary evidence and early Christian sources.
This session explores evidence from the early Church, including the writings of Caius of Rome, Dionysius of Alexandria, Epiphanius, Socrates Scholasticus, and St. Niphon, together with discussions concerning heretics corrupting Scripture, the transmission of the text of 1 John, manuscript preservation, the destruction of biblical manuscripts during the Diocletian persecution, and the historical case for the Johannine Comma.
Rather than relying on modern summaries, this series works carefully through the evidence, comparing Ferrando's arguments with primary historical sources, ancient manuscripts, and the broader field of New Testament textual criticism.
Whether you agree or disagree with the authenticity of 1 John 5:7-8, this series is intended to encourage thoughtful discussion and careful examination of one of the most debated textual variants in the New Testament.
Join us as we continue exploring one of the most significant modern books written on the Johannine Comma.

Jay Cox vs. TurretinFan - Is the Johannine Comma Original?***
Having examined the opening statements and CJ Cox's cross-examination of TurretinFan, we now arrive at the reverse cross-examination.
In this episode we carefully examine TurretinFan's questioning of CJ Cox, exposing the assumptions, historical reconstructions, logical weaknesses, and unanswered questions that lie beneath the surface.
Throughout this video we ask a simple question:
**Did TurretinFan actually present evidence... or did he merely ask difficult questions?**
There is an enormous difference.
One of the recurring themes throughout this series is the distinction between **historical evidence** and **historical reconstruction**.
These are not the same thing.
This episode also examines several important issues that received little attention during the debate, including:
β’ Jerome's Prologue to the Canonical Epistles
β’ Cyprian and the earliest patristic evidence
β’ Codex Fuldensis
β’ The Latin tradition
β’ The burden of historical proof
β’ The dependence of the ancient versions upon Greek exemplars
β’ The difference between manuscript evidence and historical assumptions
Whether you support the Critical Text, the Byzantine Text, the Majority Text, the Textus Receptus, or are simply interested in the history of the New Testament, I invite you to examine the primary sources with me and draw your own conclusions.

Jay Cox vs. TurretinFan - Is This Text Original? **
After examining both opening statements, we now arrive at what many consider the most revealing part of any formal debate:
**The Cross-Examination.**
In this episode we carefully examine CJ Cox's questioning of TurretinFan regarding Greek manuscripts, the Latin tradition, early Church Fathers, Cyprian, Priscillian, manuscript reconstruction, historical methodology, and the standards of evidence used throughout modern textual criticism.
Rather than responding with sound bites or personalities, we'll continue asking one simple question throughout this series:
**What does the evidence actually demonstrate?**
One of the major themes throughout this investigation is the distinction between **historical observation** and **historical reconstruction**.
Those are not the same thing.
For example...
Observing that a manuscript omits a passage is evidence.
Explaining *why* it omits that passage is historical reconstruction.
Observing that the Latin tradition contains the Comma is evidence.
Explaining *how* it entered the Latin tradition is historical reconstruction.
Observing that Greek manuscripts differ is evidence.
Explaining *why* they differ is historical reconstruction.
Throughout this series we'll continue asking whether the conclusions being presented are actually demonstrated by the surviving documentary evidence, or whether they represent one possible reconstruction among several.
Whether you support the Critical Text, the Byzantine Text, the Majority Text, the Textus Receptus, or are simply interested in biblical history, I invite you to examine the primary sources with me and draw your own conclusions.
Bring your Bible.

Jay Cox vs. TurretinFan - Is This Text Original? by Nick Sayers 2Revolution2026-08-01 | Did TurretinFan's opening statement actually prove that the Johannine Comma (1 John 5:7-8) is a late Latin interpolation?
Or did it simply present one possible reconstruction of history?
In Part 2 of this forensic investigation, we begin a careful examination of TurretinFan's opening arguments from his debate with CJ Cox. Rather than responding with sound bites or rhetoric, we'll slow everything down and evaluate each claim using the historical evidence.
One of the central themes of this episode is an important distinction that is often overlooked in modern textual criticism:
What does the evidence actually prove?
And what conclusions are merely inferred from that evidence?
We'll examine whether surviving Greek manuscript evidence is sufficient by itself to establish the origin of a textual variant, whether manuscript absence automatically proves non-existence, and whether historical reconstruction is sometimes presented with more certainty than the evidence allows.
Topics discussed include:
β’ TurretinFan's debate methodology β’ Greek manuscript evidence β’ Late Greek witnesses β’ Codex 629 β’ Codex 61 (Codex Montfortianus) β’ Back-translations from Latin β’ Internal vs external evidence β’ Historical reconstruction β’ Burden of proof β’ Textual methodology β’ Patristic evidence β’ Latin evidence β’ The cumulative case for authenticity β’ How historians evaluate ancient evidence
Throughout this series, every major claim will be examined individually.
Nothing will be accepted merely because it has been repeated for decades.
Our goal is not to defend traditions.
Our goal is not to defend personalities.
Our goal is to discover what the historical evidence actually demonstrates.

For years, TurretinFan has been one of the most widely cited opponents of the authenticity of 1 John 5:7. His articles, debates, and videos are regularly referenced throughout modern textual criticism circles. But how well do his arguments actually stand up when examined carefully?
In this series, we are slowing everything down.
Every quotation. Every manuscript. Every Church Father. Every historical claim. Every grammatical argument. Every citation.
Nothing will be accepted simply because a respected scholar said it.
Instead, we will return to the original evidence.
This is a forensic investigation into the historical evidence surrounding one of the most controversial verses in the New Testament.
Rather than repeating modern assumptions, we'll ask a far more important question:

DESCRIPTION
For over 500 years, the story of Erasmus and the Johannine Comma has been repeated in books, seminaries, debates, documentaries, and on YouTube.
But how many people have actually read Erasmus' own annotations?
After spending many hours examining Erasmus' Latin annotations line by line, comparing translations, studying the manuscript evidence, and tracing the historical sources, we finally reach the conclusion of this investigation.
This is Part 4 β the final episode.
In this concluding study we examine what Erasmus actually wrote, what manuscripts he personally consulted, how he evaluated the Greek and Latin evidence, and whether the popular story repeated today truly reflects the historical record.
Rather than relying on centuries of repeated anecdotes, we return to the primary sources.
This is the conclusion of my in-depth series examining Erasmus' annotations on 1 John 5:7 and the Johannine Comma.

This livestream continues our detailed study of Mike Ferrando's monumental work The Witness of God is Greater, one of the most comprehensive modern defenses of the Johannine Comma (1 John 5:7-8).
In Part 3 we move beyond the introduction and begin examining some of the earliest historical evidence for the Heavenly Witnesses.
How did the earliest Christians speak about the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit?
Why do so many early writers repeatedly use expressions like:
"These three are one."
"Three witnesses."
"Father, Son, and Holy Spirit."
Are these merely theological expressions...
...or do they preserve echoes of an older biblical text?
Together we carefully examine Mike Ferrando's research on Clement of Alexandria, Dionysius of Alexandria, Dionysius of Rome, Cyprian of Carthage, Hippolytus of Rome, and Tertullian while comparing the historical evidence, the original Greek and Latin sources, and the testimony of later scholars who argued that these writers knew the Johannine Comma long before the medieval period.
This series is not merely about manuscripts.
It is about following the historical evidence wherever it leads.
If the earliest Christians repeatedly quote language remarkably similar to 1 John 5:7, what are we to make of it?
Join us as we continue reading Ferrando's work line by line.

In this video I carefully examine every major claim made in Dan McClellan's recent video about the King James Version. He argues that the KJV is based on inferior manuscripts, contains outdated English, is overly literal, and is not a high-quality translation.
Do the historical facts support those conclusions?
Rather than responding with opinions, we examine the original historical evidence, including Erasmus, Stephanus, Beza, the Textus Receptus, the Byzantine manuscript tradition, the King James translators themselves, and the documentary record surrounding the production of the Authorized Version.
Topics covered include:
β’ Is the Textus Receptus based on poor manuscripts? β’ Are earlier manuscripts always better? β’ Were verses added to the Bible? β’ Is the King James Bible really outdated? β’ Is the KJV too literal? β’ Was the KJV simply copied from the Bishops' Bible? β’ Why did the King James Bible become the world's most influential English Bible?
This is not a response based on tradition or emotion. It is a detailed examination of the historical evidence.
If you enjoy serious research into Biblical manuscripts, church history, the King James Bible, the Textus Receptus, and New Testament textual criticism, consider subscribing.

But what manuscripts did Erasmus actually examine?
In this episode we reach one of the most important sections of the Annotation, where Erasmus lists the manuscripts he personally consulted, compares Latin and Greek witnesses, discusses the famous Codex Britannicus, evaluates the Vatican manuscript, examines the Aldine edition, and gives his first assessment of the Complutensian Polyglot.
Rather than relying on modern summaries, we read Erasmus himself.
This section overturns many popular assumptions about Erasmus' method and demonstrates that he carefully weighed every witness available to him.

What Did Erasmus Really Believe?
Part 2 β Reading the Annotation Itself
In Part 2 of this series we finally enter Erasmus' famous annotation on 1 John 5:7β8 and begin examining his own words line by line.
For centuries people have repeated stories about Erasmus and the Johannine Comma.
But how many have actually read the annotation?
What did Erasmus say about Jerome?
How did he evaluate the Church Fathers?
Why did he discuss Augustine, Cyril, and Bede?
What evidence did he consider important?
And does the annotation support the popular claim that Erasmus rejected the Comma Johanneum?
In this livestream we begin reading the text itself and allow Erasmus to speak for himself.
Topics include:
β’ Erasmus and the Johannine Comma β’ 1 John 5:7β8 β’ Jerome's Prologue to the Canonical Epistles β’ Augustine of Hippo β’ Cyril of Alexandria β’ Bede the Venerable β’ Trinitarian theology β’ Historical theology β’ Church history β’ Textual criticism β’ Greek manuscripts β’ Latin manuscripts β’ Patristic evidence β’ The history of the New Testament text β’ The Textus Receptus β’ The King James Bible
A central question remains:
Was Erasmus attempting to remove 1 John 5:7?
Or was he attempting to follow the evidence available to him?

This KJV and Textus Receptus study begins a detailed reading of Mike Ferrando's book The Witness of God is Greater, one of the most ambitious modern defenses of the Johannine Comma (1 John 5:7-8).
In this first installment we examine Ferrando's introduction, his historical methodology, and his opening arguments concerning Walter Thiele, Cyprian of Carthage, the Old Latin Bible, and the historical witnesses to the Heavenly Witnesses.
One of the most fascinating admissions in modern Johannine Comma studies comes from Walter Thiele, perhaps the foremost twentieth-century scholar of the Vetus Latina. Although Thiele personally regarded the Comma Johanneum as an interpolation, he nevertheless argued that Cyprian was not merely allegorizing 1 John 5:8 but was actually quoting 1 John 5:7 from a Latin manuscript.
Why would one of the world's leading Latin manuscript scholars make such a claim?
In this study we begin working through Ferrando's evidence line by line.

What Did Erasmus Really Believe?
Part 1 β Reading the Annotation Line by Line
In this livestream we begin a detailed examination of Erasmus' famous annotation on 1 John 5:7-8, one of the most controversial textual notes in the history of the New Testament.
For over five hundred years people have repeated stories about Erasmus and the Johannine Comma.
"Erasmus removed the verse."
"Erasmus denied the Trinity."
"Erasmus was forced to include it."
"Erasmus was tricked by a forged manuscript."
But what did Erasmus actually say?
In this study we read Erasmus' own words, line by line, beginning with the opening sections of his annotation and examining his discussion of Jerome, Cyril of Alexandria, Bede, Augustine, the Arians, and the famous Heavenly Witnesses.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the annotation is that Erasmus is not merely discussing manuscripts.
He is weighing historical evidence.
He is evaluating Church Fathers.
He is examining ancient interpretations.
He is asking whether the testimony of the Father, Word, and Holy Spirit was known to the earliest Christian writers.
And he is doing so decades before modern textual criticism existed.
Tonight we begin working through the annotation paragraph by paragraph.
β’ Erasmus and 1 John 5:7-8 β’ The history of the Johannine Comma β’ The Comma Johanneum controversy β’ Erasmus' 1516 Greek New Testament β’ Erasmus' later editions β’ Jerome and the Canonical Epistles β’ The Prologue to the Canonical Epistles β’ Cyril of Alexandria β’ Bede the Venerable β’ Augustine of Hippo β’ Augustine Against Maximinus β’ The Arian controversy β’ Trinitarian proof texts β’ Early Church evidence β’ The testimony of the Father, Word, and Holy Spirit β’ "These three are one" β’ The Heavenly Witnesses β’ Erasmus' argument from silence β’ Why Cyril matters β’ Why Augustine matters β’ Why Bede matters β’ Did Jerome know the Comma? β’ Did Augustine know the Comma? β’ Did Bede know the Comma? β’ Historical theology β’ Church history β’ Textual criticism β’ Greek manuscripts β’ Latin manuscripts β’ Patristic evidence β’ Early Christian writers β’ Biblical interpretation β’ The doctrine of the Trinity β’ Erasmus and the Arians β’ Humanism and the Renaissance β’ The history of the New Testament text β’ The Textus Receptus β’ The King James Bible β’ KJV apologetics β’ Confessional Bibliology
A central question will guide today's study:
If the Johannine Comma was known throughout the ancient Church,
why do Cyril, Augustine, and Bede appear not to use it?
And if they did know it,
what exactly does Erasmus think happened to the text?
Tonight we begin investigating Erasmus' answer.

THE MAN WHO TURNED SCHOLARS AGAINST JEROME'S PROLOGUE
Richard Simon, the Johannine Comma, and the Origins of Modern Textual Criticism
For centuries critics claimed that Jerome's Prologue to the Canonical Epistles was not authentic.
One of the earliest and most influential voices behind this view was Richard Simon.
In his Critical History of the Text of the New Testament, Simon argued that the Prologue was not written by Jerome and questioned its testimony concerning the Heavenly Witnesses of 1 John 5:7.
His arguments would influence generations of scholars and help shape the modern discussion surrounding the Johannine Comma.
In this livestream we examine:
β’ Richard Simon and the Critical History of the Text of the New Testament β’ Simon's arguments against Jerome's Prologue β’ Jerome's Prologue to the Canonical Epistles β’ Codex Fuldensis (546 AD) β’ Victor of Capua β’ The history of the forgery accusation β’ John Mill, Porson, Scrivener and later critics β’ The discovery and publication of Codex Fuldensis β’ Erasmus and Jerome β’ The Johannine Comma (1 John 5:7) β’ The testimony of Cyprian β’ The grammatical solecism argument β’ Early Latin evidence β’ Greek manuscript evidence β’ Why scholars dated the Prologue late β’ Whether Richard Simon's arguments still work after Codex Fuldensis β’ Historical arguments for and against Jerome's authorship
A central question will guide today's study:
Was Richard Simon correct about Jerome's Prologue?
Or did later discoveries undermine one of the most influential arguments in Johannine Comma studies?

THIS 546 AD MANUSCRIPT CHANGED THE JOHANNINE COMMA DEBATE
Codex Fuldensis, Jerome's Prologue, and the Collapse of a Textual Myth
For centuries critics claimed that Jerome's Prologue to the Canonical Epistles was a late forgery, perhaps dating from the eighth or ninth century.
But then Codex Fuldensis entered the discussion.
Dated to 546 AD and associated with Victor of Capua, Codex Fuldensis contains the famous Prologue that accuses unfaithful translators of omitting the testimony of the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit in 1 John 5.
