And although it shows signs of age, the animated film, a parable about the role of immigration, race, and wealth in America, still resonates today. Actually, given the cynical exploitation of xenophobia during this most unpresidential of presidential campaigns, you could say that Freedom River strikes a bigger chord than it has in years. That’s why, after a five year hiatus, we’re featuring the animation once again on Open Culture.The backstory behind the film deserves a little mention. According to Joseph Cavella, a writer for the film, it took a little cajoling and perseverance to get Orson Welles involved in the film.For several years, Bosustow Productions had asked Orson Welles, then living in Paris, to narrate one of their films. He never responded. When I finished the Freedom River script, we sent it to him together with a portable reel to reel tape recorder and a sizable check and crossed our fingers. He was either desperate for money or (I would rather believe) something in it touched him because two weeks later we got the reel back with the narration word for word and we were on our way.,
Chicagos Original Electric Powered Transit Fleet ChiTownView 2023-01-05 | At one time Chicago had the biggest system of electric powered street cars. A system called Chicago Surface Line. It was one network with over a thousand miles of track and more than 3,000 cars operated by a number of companies. When the CTA took over the system in 1947 one of the first things they did was phase out the electric buses. This film is some footage taken during a train fan chartered exploration of the system. Today we go out to the Los Angles, the “city of angeles” for this rebroadcast of a video from the 1970's about Bunker Hill and the Angles Flight Railroad. Made at the time the area was being redeveloped and everything was "waiting to be leveled, to make way for a new world of concrete steel and glass". The video shows old homes in the area amid the destruction as they are being torn down. Chicagos 18th Century Sausage King Killer, Halloween Display ChiTownView 2021-10-28 | I was out hiking in my hometown of Forest Park Il. looking for something to tickle my eye. It's October so there's all kinds of Halloween decorations. Also, Forest Park has a scarecrow promotion going on. Most of the entries weren't very scary but then I came across one that had sausages draped over his body stanging next to a garbage can full of skeleton parts. As a Chicago history buff who is acquainted with the windy city's rich history of murder, this appeared to a homage to one our earliest “sensational” murders. That being the murder of Louisa Luetgert wife of Adolph Luetgert who was moving millions of pounds of sausage through his northside “factory”. The crime was also known as the “Sausage Vat Murder as this is where Louisa's remains were found. The trial was one of the first that for the most part relied on forensic evidence to secure a conviction. In any case, justice was swift with barely ten months between crime and conviction. Louisa was last seen on May 1 1897 and Adolph was convicted on February 9 1898. Final justice was almost as swift as Mr. Lutegert dies of a heart attack while serving his life sentence in Joliet prison on July 28 1899.The factory still stands although it was converted to condo's many years ago. Scary Halloween Figure Spotted In Forest Park Il. ChiTownView 2021-10-27 | Here's one of the scariest Halloween displays in Forest Park Il.. At first, the tall black-robed figure seemed merely imposing but when the giant started talking it gave me a bit of a jump. While the creature's voice is his own we added some audio enhancements. Lightbow ChiTownView 2021-10-20 | I was lying flat on the couch watching British Sci Fi Classic "Devil Girl From Mars" when I noticed this cool reflection on my ceiling. It was an arch of solid white light that looked like a rainbow, without the colors. Ergo lightbow? I grabbed my camera and grabbed a quick clip because like a rainbow this phenomenon didn't last too long.Then I opened the footage in my Movie Studio software and created a second clip after adding some special effects filters. Dont Be A Sucker 1943 Anti Fascist Film ChiTownView 2020-08-20 | A short propaganda film made by the US War Department explaining how the Nazi party was able to seize Germany. It's starts with a group of men listening to a pro fascist speaker. Two of the men strike up a conversation. One of the men was a professor in Germany and watched the Nazi's rise to power. Using propaganda and fear he was able to separate groups of people and turn them against each other. Kind of a cautionary tale given our modern times with Donald Trump gaining power by splitting people up then turning them on one another. Dare Devil Bikers Descend On Chicago ChiTownView 2020-06-24 | I was walking over the Circle Ave. bridge that crosses the Eisenhower Expressway in Forest Park around sunset. All of a sudden I heard the roar of motorcycles, a LOT of motorcycles. Then they came hurtling down 290 west heading for Chicago. They dominated traffic entirely for a minute popping wheelies and showing off. Could be a long night for the CPD.

Race Riot Chicago 1919 Red Summer ChiTownView 2020-06-04 | The Elaine Massacre; youtu.be/Jdm1LukEN7wRed Summer; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Summer Chicago 1919; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_race_riot_of_1919In Chicago on July 27 1919 an African American named Eugene Williams went down to the 31st St. beach to escape the heat. He crossed an informal line between the black and white swimmers and was pelted with rocks by a white man. While there was no legal segregation in Chicago the past few years had seen an influx of blacks coming north to seek a better life. This was stoking fear and resentment among whites. Williams was killed in the incident and the police arrested not the white rock thrower but a black bystander. This caused other black observes on scene to object which was met with violence by whites. It touched off four days of white gangs invading black areas burning and killing. It wasn't until 6,000 national guard troops came in to protect the black communities that calm was restored. In the end 38 people were killed and over 500 injured majority of the casualties were black.As I am writing and assembling the images for this clip about the riot the nation is roiling with unrest over the televised murder of Floyd George an unarmed black man. He was choked to death over the course of ten minutes by a white police officer with his hands in his pockets as he knelled on a man's neck who pleaded for his life. As a result cities across the country are alive with protest, destruction, more deaths and injuries. But as ugly as this moment is it pales in comparison to the events that took place during the Red Summer of 1919.The Chicago riot wasn't an isolated incident but a disturbance that took place during a time of great social uphevael. A flu pandemic was ravaging the world it's spread aided by WW1 it estimated that as many as 100 million people died by the time the virus had run it's course. Then the end of the war touched off an economic down turn. Ten's of thousands of soldiers returned home finding that there were no jobs to be had. And black veterans came home determined to advocate for their rights. It was called the red summer because of the rise of Communism and for the blood that was running in the streets. Because these two forces were a direct threat to the structure to the racist system. So fearful whites struck out and the nation was engulfed be a series of similar white on black race riots that left hundreds dead. Add to that in the first nine months of 1919 white mobs lynched, at least, forty-three African Americans, sixteen were hung and the others shot. While another eight men were actually burned at the stake. The states were unable or unwilling to achieve any kind of justice in these killings. And 100 years later we still fail to often when innocent blacks die at the hands of cops.. As juries in these high profile cases have a hard time finding them guilty.

Sometimes in our search for interesting topics we wander around the internet looking for fresh material. Anyway I came across this street dancing clip on archive.org which is a tremendous resource. Here are real Chicagoan's, especially the first guy, kicking up their heels, busting some moves, and just generally getting down with their bad selves. We have the mullet guy doing a blue collar throw down, a pair of dancers at the late Ed Debevic's and a robot dancing couple. Thanks to Rachel for creating this dance spectacular.
Historic Chicago CTA Green Line Footage ChiTownView 2020-05-20 | Older residents of Oak Park and Chicago's Austin neighborhood will remember a time when the CTA's Green Line trains ran as a surface railroad west of Laramie. This all changed in 1962 when an embankment was built alongside the already elevated Union Pacific West tracks and the Green Line became all elevated. In the first half of this video we see the trains operating on the street and the Harlem, Oak Park, Ridgeland and Austin stations. Then we see a couple of minutes of the line after it it became elevated in 1962.The video ends with some early evening footage of trains on Chicago's downtown loop tracks. Through out the film we see lots of classic cars and vintage train rolling stock.
Mt. Olive Cemetery Chicago Il. ChiTownView 2020-05-19 | I was looking to take a bit of a break from the lockdown we are living with these days. It was a nice sunny spring day so it was time to get out. A good time to film another episode to my series of clips of cemeteries in the Chicago. Today's destination was Mt. Olive cemetery on Chicago's northwest side. It was opened in 1889 as a place of interment for deceased Scandanavian Americans. There are no famous people buried in this smallish cemetery but it still has some beautiful art work. The Howie-Wiley Machine Gun Carrier Father Of The Jeep ChiTownView 2020-05-15 | We haven't done a good tank video here at ChiTownView in a long time, we do have a playlist of past uploads here. I was going through some old files I came across this nugget, it's not an armored vehicle but it is pretty unique. The plucky jeep is one of America's icons starting as a military vehicle in the second world war and blossomed into a cultural phenomenon afterwards. In this clip we get a look at the contraption that ultimately led to the birth of the Jeep. Ladies and gents behold the Howie-Wiley Machine Gun Carrier aka The Belly Flopper. A two man low low slug mobile machine gun nest with a driver that drove with his feet while laying on his belly. It never was seriously considered but it did awaken the army's interest in developing a light nimble reconnaissance vehicle . The Elvis Sign Experiment ChiTownView 2020-05-13 | Here we have something that's a bit of an experiment . I took some footage I found of the sign in front of the Hilton Hotel on the Las Vegas strip. It was advertising a December 1976 series of concerts. I took the clip and began to play around with it, my Adobe Primier Elements editing software. Anyway here's the final result hope you like it, drop us a line. I have a curious relationship with Elvis Presley. I was born in 1954 so was a little young to dig hime in the 1950's so he didn't have much of an impact on me. When in later years, after he passed, I came to appreciate him not as a musician but as a cultural icon. In the 1980's I worked in a record store and where I converted an unused bathroom into a shrine, with a waterfall, to the king. Muhammad Ali / Sonny Liston Controversial Second Fight ChiTownView 2020-05-06 | Here we have a look at the World's Heavyweight Boxing Championship bout between champ Muhammad Ali and challenger Sonny Liston. The fight on May 25, 1965. St. Dominic’s Hall, Lewiston, Maine his was their 2nd meeting. Following the February 1964 match where Ali took the belt from Liston. They ended up in the backwoods of Maine after two states declined to licence the fight because of Liston's mob alleged mob connections.The bout ended up being one the most controversial and shortest fights in the annuals of pro boxing. Liston was knocked down by what many claimed was a phantom punch less than two minutes into the fight. When asked about the punch Ali claimed it was a “secret” punch used by Jack Johnson and taught to to him by Lincoln Perry aka Stepin Fetchit who was the first African-American movie star. Then to top it off Liston wasn't counted out by referee Jersey Joe Walcott but by the timekeeper because Walcott was trying to get Ali into a corner.The rest of the half hour clip is taken up with ABC's examination of the fight and press conferences with the two fighters. One of the more interesting exchanges is a short interview where the questioner insists on calling Ali by his former name Cassius Clay. Among the famous names that turn up are; Rocky Marciano, Howard Kossel and Jack Dempsey. All and all an interesting clip that I came across while looking for pictures of Muhammad Ali. Ronald Reagan & Harry Caray At A Chicago Cubs Game ChiTownView 2020-04-10 | It was late September in 1988 when President Ronald Reagan visited Wrigley Field to see the Chicago Cubs take on the Pittsburg Pirates. An old broadcaster from way back "Dutch" joined Harry Caray in the booth. Foggy Christmas Eve In Forest Park Il. 2019 ChiTownView 2019-12-25 | We had below freezing temps and snow on Halloween a couple of months back. In fine Chicago weather tradition for Christmas we get a high in the middle 50's. When I stepped out on the porch at 7 to bring in the paper I was greeted by dense fog. So I grabbed my camera and wandered around downtown Forest Park ending up at the Eisenhower expressway at rush hour.

Indeed it was as the flyer, that was conveniently available announced this was the work of Mara Baker and the piece was called “Chameleon Blind”. Story Telling Kids Train Viaduct Art Murals ChiTownView 2019-10-04 | While strolling around documenting Fall as it settles on the Chicago area for my new ChiTownView / YouTube video series “Fall Colors”. I've come across a couple of interesting art murals that tell stories. Both are middle school summer camp projects in Oak Park and River Forest. Our first mural tells the story of Henrietta Lacks a poor black woman who had her cancer cells harvested without permission or compensation. Because of their unique properties created an industry in cancer research and treatment. You can find out more about Ms. Lacks here. The mural is located on Forest on the viaduct between North and South Blvd.'s.Poetry is visualized in the second mural which can be found at Keystone and Central in River Forest Il. The poem is called “The Mighty Oak” by Johnny Ray Ryder.

While todays video was shot in Forest Park future episodes will be recorded at various parts of the Chicago area.In this episode it is still pretty much late summer despite the calendar. The flowers, for the most part, retain the colorful beauty. We see butterflies and bees but in a couple of months the landscape will transform and all this life and color will be replaced by winter's gray skies, snow and ice. 1893 Chicago Columbia Exposition Manufacturers Bldg Murals ChiTownView 2019-08-23 | In my travels I came across this series of photos of dome murals from the Manufacturers building from the 1893 Columbian Exposition hosted by Chicago. One of the greatest of all the World's Fairs it was also known as the "White City". "The Devil in the White City " by Erik Larson is a fascinating book that tells the factional story behind this fair. Surreal Fireworks Forest Park 7/4/19 ChiTownView 2019-08-07 | There are lots of fireworks videos out there, over 47 million by Googles count. I took some it didn't turn out to well. And I was going to toss it when I changed my mind and started to digitally process the footage and add some special effects. Software used to create this video remix is Adobe Movie Studio 13.
