Plekken die we bezoeken zijn het Viking Long House, de Rif-kust. Op het Snæfellsnes schiereiland gaan we naar de Kirkjufellsfoss-waterval, het kerkje Ingjaldshólskirkja, het Skarðsvík-strand, de Saxhóll-krater en Djúpalónssandur-strand. Tunesië 4ever2wherever 2024-01-02 | In deze film word je meegenomen naar hoogtepunten van Tunesië. We beginnen in de smalle, kronkelige straatjes van de medina van Tunis. We bezoeken het Bardo Museum met zijn wereldberoemde mozaieken en gaan naar het schilderachtige plaatsje Sidi Bou Saïd met zijn witgekalkte huizen met blauwe deuren en kozijnen. We bekijken enkele opgravingen van Carthago en gaan naar Mahdia, waar we langs de boulevard en in de medina wandelen en ook wevers aan het werk zien. Onze volgende stop is het grote, goed bewaarde amfitheater van El Djem. Daarna duiken we in het dagelijks leven van Sfax, de tweede stad van Tunesië. Via Matmata met zijn grotwoningen bereiken we Tozeur, de eerste oasestad. In de omgeving zien we enkele Star Wars filmsets en worden we rondgeleid in een palmboombos. We wandelen in de prachtige kloof van Midès en het verlaten dorp en bekijken de Grand Cascade. Vanuit Douz gaan we echt de woestijn in. Tunesië 2023 - De woestijn in met de LandCruiserClub 4ever2wherever 2023-12-19 | In november 2023 maakte een groep leden van de Nederlandse LandCruiserClub (https://www.landcruiser-club.nl/) een reis van veertien dagen naar Tunesië, georganiseerd door Desert 4x4 Explorer (https://desert4x4explorer.nl/ - Facebook: #Folkertkromkamp). Er werd vooral door de zandduinen in de Sahara gereden. De Toyota LandCruisers komen vast te zitten en worden weer losgetrokken, geschept of gelierd. De groep kampeert op prachtige plekken tussen de zandduinen. This temple is the most picturesque so far: it has hardly been restored and is beautifully situated between the tall trees. Few tourists are around. Beng Mealea was built as a Hindu temple, but some carvings depict Buddhist motifs. Its primary material is sandstone. The history of the temple is unknown and it can be dated only by its architectural style, identical to Angkor Wat. Scholars assumed it was built in the early 12th century.We visit Koh Ker, a remote archaeological site in northern Cambodia. Koh Ker was an important city of the Khmer empire. It is in a jungle filled region that is sparsely populated. For some time it was the capital of the entire empire. Overland World Tour | Episode 5.25 | Cambodia - Stilted Village & Angkor 4ever2wherever 2023-04-08 | PODCAST SEASON 5 - OVERLAND THROUGH SOUTHEAST ASIAWe make a boat trip in Kampung Luong. Kampung Luong is a fishing village along Lake Tonle Sap. All houses are on stilts in the water and transport between the houses is only possible with boats.On the way to Siem Reap we stop briefly in a sculptor's village. Rows of Buddhist statues and other figures are lined up here. We do see men cutting the raw stones, but we see no one sculpt.In the Angkor excavation we drive the Big Circuit. It contains a number of smaller temples. It is wonderful to see how well sculptures are often still preserved at these temples from the twelfth century. Overland World Tour | Episode 5.22 | Cambodia - Around Kampot 4ever2wherever 2023-03-18 | PODCAST SEASON 5 - OVERLAND THROUGH SOUTHEAST ASIAWe visit Bokor Hill Station and two caves with temples.Bokor Hill Station in Preah Monivong National Park was built in the 1920s by French colonists wanting to escape the heat and humidity. The site is under a 99–year lease to the Chinese Sokimex Group. We have never seen a nature reserve so thoroughly ruined. Everything looks abandoned, poorly maintained and grimy green. Of many of the other buildings, only the concrete carcasses are standing, without any work being done on them. Overland World Tour | Episode 5.20 | To Cambodia 4ever2wherever 2023-03-04 | PODCAST SEASON 5 - OVERLAND THROUGH SOUTHEAST ASIAWe continue on our way south, towards the Cambodian border. At night we wake up from a tropical rain shower. It continues to alternate between showers and drizzle all day long. We make a stopover in Trat. We walk across the large market. It is striking how many different types of vegetables of excellent quality are sold. The market is supposed to be covered, but that is relative. We stay over in Ban Mai Rut, a picturesque fishing village. At the mouth of the river there are houses on stilts on both sides. In front of it are fishing boats painted in bright colours where men mend their nets and traps. Along paths on stilts from the river are dilapidated houses, also on stilts. The paths end in a kind of swamp. It is a typical Saturday afternoon with children playing, women cleaning vegetables and fish for the evening meal and families eating or watching TV. Many Cambodians live there. Some houses are neat and well maintained, but in many places it is a mess of randomly thrown rubbish, especially plastic bottles.The handling at the border between Thailand and Cambodia is friendly but chaotic. The Thais keep sending us back and forth between windows. They keep asking for a paper that we should have received when we entered the country, but never got.When after two hours we think we have collected all Cambodian papers and stamps and wait with the engine running until the barrier opens, we are put aside again. Immigration and Customs have been handled, but the police have an app on which your mother-in-law's favourite dish and other relevant information must be entered. An official with four stripes makes a heroic effort, assisted by a youngster with fewer stripes, but more sense of IT. In the end, the system is satisfied. It takes some getting used to suddenly driving on the right again. We buy a SIM card in Koh Kong, a lively town with a large market just across the border. With an umbrella in the left hand and the throttle in the right, people ride their mopeds through the rain. The moped as a means of transport for the whole family is the norm. The people are friendly and more English is spoken than in Thailand. Exchanging local money is not immediately necessary, because dollars are accepted everywhere.We visit Peam Krasop National Park, next to our camping place. The park is a protected mangrove forest; you can walk through it on a concrete path. It is nice to walk in the middle of the mangrove. We are amazed at the many Cambodian tourists dressed in their best, but it turns out to be a group outing. When they have left with a tour boat, we have the park to ourselves. According to the Cambodian rainfall radar, it will rain along the entire west coast and will continue to do so for weeks. So we skip the islands that we had in mind there. We drive to Kampot. It is a beautiful drive through a sparsely populated area where mountains, uncultivated land, rice fields and villages alternate. The road is terrible in some parts: you have to find the asphalt between the potholes.We camp at a cosy guest house owned by a German with many international guests. Wat Pho is one of Bangkok's oldest temples. It is first on the list of six temples in Thailand classed as the highest grade of the first-class royal temples. It is associated with King Rama I who rebuilt the temple complex on an earlier temple site. It became his main temple and is where some of his ashes are enshrined. The temple was later expanded and extensively renovated by Rama III. The temple complex houses the largest collection of Buddha images in Thailand, including a 46 meter long reclining Buddha. The temple is considered the earliest centre for public education in Thailand, and the marble illustrations and inscriptions placed in the temple for public instructions have been recognised by UNESCO.After performing some maintenance work in Pattaya we continue to Chanthaburi. We walk the challenging Nature Trail in Namtok Phlio National Park. Overland World Tour | Episode 5.18 | Floating Market And Grand Palace 4ever2wherever 2023-02-18 | PODCAST SEASON 5 - OVERLAND THROUGH SOUTHEAST ASIAWe head back to the central waterway of Amphawa early in the morning. Tour boats are around in abundance, but apart from one or two restaurant boats, there is no floating market to be seen. However, the shops are ice. We continue to the floating market of Tha Kha. Here we still see the traditional boats with fruit and vegetables that are paddled around by men and women with the characteristic lampshade hats under a parasol. It is certainly not the number of boats from the past, but it looks authentic. Then we struggle through increasingly busy traffic to a hotel in a suburb of Bangkok.Thai silk weavers in Ban Krua supplied silk to the Thai silk company founded in 1948. One or two weaving mills should still exist. We find the weaving mill in a picturesque neighbourhood, but there is no weaving. Judging by the looms, that has been the case for a long time. Part of public transport in Bangkok is by boats running up and down the river. It's a fun way to see life on the waterfront.We visit the Grand Palace. It is unbelievable how richly decorated everything is. Everywhere we see (tin) gold and paintings. On the island is a traditional, but very extensive folklore museum about the south of Thailand. In Nakhon Si Thammarat we visit Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, the most important Buddhist temple in southern Thailand with a stupa built in the 13th century. We make a stop at Chian Yai harbour to see how the fishing vessels are loaded and unloaded. At last our campervan is repaired by a worshop that is well known all over Malaysia. The manager invites us to join a wildcamp weekend with friends. We have al lovely time. We then continue to Penang Island and stay in an orchard of durian, rambutan and jackfruit. I visit the Thean Hou temple, the largest Chinese temple in Southeast Asia and go to the historical Merdeka Square and buildings around it. Margriet returns from the Netherlands and together we go to the Batu Caves, just north of Kuala Lumpur. I go to the KLCC Aquarium, the ILHAM Public Art Gallery, the Petronas Twin Towers and the Petrosains Discovery Centre. I get a private tour in Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman, a 100 years old refurbished and relocated house. Furthermore I explore the Chow Kit Wet Market, the largest market i have seen in Malaysia, and Kampung Baru, a section of Kuala Lumpur with traditional wooden houses. It feels like a rural place, but sits between the skycrapers.
