A lot of people do things like this to avoid doing the real work that will actually have resultsEssentially its a way to rationalize you got stuff done today when you didn't. There are a lot of great productivity tips out there, but I really feel that we need to identify what’s the most effective use of our time before we try to maximize our use of time. Emails / Correspondence and how to convert inquiries into bookingsAlways email people back right away I have lost job opportunities simply by emailing someone back an hour or two after the email went through. For most jobs, at least big corporate ones, the process will be slower and you are not going to be at risk of losing the gig if you don’t get back to them right away.But responding quickly within reason shows you’re serious about the work. And sometimes you may get the job simply because you got the ball rolling quicker than anyone else. One reason people aren’t emailing back right away is because they get hung up on how to respond, what to charge, etc.THE SOLUTION TO THIS is :You should Have a price sheet, a template response, but at the damn least know your rates! Know your rates, write them down! (you do not want to panic price! Or worse delay and lose the job!)ALWAYS GET A CONTRACT (and speaking of which, SEND IT RIGHT AWAY!)Protects youAs much for them as it is for you (don’t be afraid).Take a deposit (because let's be real, is suing ever worth it?)AND SPEAKING OF CONTRACTS: send those right away too! Sometimes you’ll have multiple people within an organization tasked to find a photographer and more than one finds one, with the job going to the person that got the contract signed first! \Itemize your pricing - within reasonHelps you to work within someone's budget without devaluing your servicesIf you lump price everything and it’s not in their budget 1 of two things will happen:They go in another direction orThey negotiate- which now has you in a situation in which you are devaluing yourself.But if you’ve itemized your services, your client is Helps with any complications down the roadetc.PROFESSIONALIZE the way you do things, from how you write your emails to how you conduct yourself. But more importantly you will need insurance in order to do certain jobs when venues require it.Personally I have actually had to file a claim when I had a theft. And although Ive spent twice as much on my insurance than I received back in that claim- the peace of mind insurance has given me has been worth it. But more importantly having insurance will protect you against liability and simply allow you to do certain jobs. Some venues or clients will actually require you to have it and when that comes up you don’t want to have to scrabble to try to quickly insure yourself in order to take the job. Does it need to be f2.8 or even Canon’s 28-70 f2 lens? Nope. But in most situations f2.8 is a plenty wide enough aperture for the job. Most versatile zoom lens because of its focal rangeGood for Establishing shotsDetail shotsClose candidsCandid interactionsAnd even speakers on stage if you’re able to get close enoughThis lens could easily be your one lens owned if you’re shooting in areas in which you can physically move your body as close or far aways as you need to get the shotOther options24-105 or Nikon’s 24-120More versatile than a 24-70, but if I were choosing between a 24-70 f2.8 vs one of these lenses, I would prefer the versatility of a wider maximum F Stop.17-40Somewhere around 75% of the time I am using this lens at 17mm for my establishing shotsBut also great for:Large groupsMuch lighter than any 24-70 (great for weight conscious people or for the end of a long long day) (especially if you don't need to shoot wider than f2.8Other OptionsRF 14-35 F4 RF 15-35 F2.8EF 16-35 F2.8Why I am happy with an f4 / usually when shooting wide, multiple subjects or establishing, having more depth is a good thing.RF 16 f2.8Because I have found that I am so often not using my 17-40 at any focal length other than 17mm, the RF 16mm has been an excellent lens for the distinct jobs in which I can shoot an entire event with one lens minus a small handful of wide shots. I can simply throw this in my bag- taking up nearly no space and contributing barely any weight.70-200great for close up candids Can be less obtrusive, but I think a stealthy photographer that knows how to move can easily go unnoticed with something as “wide” as a 50mm.BUT Typically used for reach when you CAN NOT physically move in closerPeople on stage, etc.A kids birthday party photographer could probably go their whole career without one, but for large corporate events, this lens is a MUSTAnything with more reach than 200mmShooting with just primes:Sacrificing versatility for less weight (in most cases) and wider aperturesWhy positioning mattersMemorizing / seeing in focal lengths / pre visualizationThis really forces you to engage with your work, having physical, creative benefitsCan be lighter, but not necessarilyEspecially great on a two body setup! With it I can shoot:wide scenes if I can backup enoughCandid interactionsDetail shotsEven close candidsHuge maximum apertureLight weightIncredible auto focus in low lightMax aperture, auto focus ability in low light, and my r6 IS allows me to shoot in light I would not be able to with any other lens I ownEF 85mm f1.8Hard to beat for event photographers that may need to shoot impromptu portraits or set up a headshot station at a conference, for exampleClassic portrait lens, but turns out to be a pretty great lens for shooting candids. However, when shooting with two cameras, one with the 50mm, i find that the 135mm to be a better companionEF 135 f2Known for its excellent character (canon)If that matters for events is another storyAlso great for portraitsCan be used to shoot headshotsBecomes mostly impractical for anything but close up candidsF2 advantage to a 70-200 is somewhat offset by the 70-200 (IS), but shooting with a wider aperture with a faster shutter can be an advantage too.EF 200 F2.8Light but no ISAlso, not a pixel peeper, but likely somewhat dated opticsNot much lighter than the most modern 70-200 lenses (plastics)In the end of the day, unless on a budget, prob not worth itHonorable mentionsFisheye lensFisheye lens: You dont need it, butdoesn't mean its useless or you can't have fun with it. Why Im Optimistic About Event Photography Right Now Mik Milman 2022-02-08 | In this video I discuss my outlook for event photography in 2022. Taking a look at my personal experience in 2021, that of other event photographers I've talked to, and the data, I'm feeling pretty darn optimistic about it.Starting in March of 2021, things really started to open up, both literally and figuratively, I guess. I immediately saw a boom in business at that time, with things eventually simmering down a bit before absolutely booming again in the fall. And I was not alone. It seemed like most photographers I knew were extremely busy, especially in October. People and businesses just seemed to be champing at the bit to throw an event. And the data I have really seems to back up my personal experience. In the fall I saw my channel grow at levels it never had before. Although I am proud of the content I have produced, I really don't think it gets the majority of the credit. Things really seemed to stay on course all the way up until the new year for me. I worked my butt off at the time because I assumed I would have January off. But although I didn't, I did see my channel's growth begin to slow down as expected. So what about the current wave of you know what? Truthfully it barely seemed to have an impact. I had just one event cancel. What about going forward?
