Inside the Mind of Jihan Zencirli, aka GERONIMO coolhunting 2018-11-14 | Created for Summit LA18, commissioned by Mercedes-Benz EQ and curated by COOL HUNTING, GERONIMO‘s The Mirrored Forest included nine inflated, recycled nylon trees installed in a Downtown LA alley. For a few days, the narrow urban space (also the entrance to Summit) was overgrown with the 10- to 30-foot sculptures that offered both whimsy and shade for the 3,000+ attendees. We visited GERONIMO aka Jihan Zencirli in her studio during the project’s development to learn more about the inspiration for this departure from her known and fantastical outpouring of round latex balloons. As we’ve come to learn from working with Zencirli, her mind tends to wander in incredible ways—fortunately, the cameras were rolling.

Rockwell Unscripted for Knoll coolhunting 2016-07-12 | When Knoll was looking for a design partner to collaborate on a collection of furniture that suited modern work styles and environments "there was only one person to call, and that was David Rockwell," says Benjamin Pardo, Knoll's Creative Director. Two very different sensibilities that may at first not seem like the most obvious partnership leverage the design firm's expertise in theater, play, co-working and hospitality with the furniture company's impeccable craftsmanship and creative freedom. The result is Rockwell Unscripted, a collection that fits in between the more traditional working and meeting spaces in most offices. It's a surprisingly successful, improvisational and flexible collection of seating, borders, storage, tables, steps and accessories. David Rockwell, who had won the company's first Tony award for set design the same week as the Rockwell Unscripted Collection for Knoll launched, shares his thoughts about the collaboration.

Microcars at the Jesada Technik Museum coolhunting 2015-05-13 | While traveling through Thailand, we discovered the Jesada Technik Museum in a small town outside of Bangkok. Home to over 500 vehicles including double-decker buses, airplanes, helicopters and scooters, the museum's most unique attraction is the vast collection of microcars. Also known as "bubble cars," these refrigerator-sized automobiles were built small due to limitations in materials and resources in Europe following World War II. The retro and progressive designs of the 1950s microcars have become a model for the modern-day smart vehicle.

Cool Hunting Video: Penguin Enrichment coolhunting 2014-12-15 | During a recent visit to Los Angeles, we stopped by the Aquarium of the Pacific after hearing about their interesting use of technology in the enrichment program for their Magellanic penguins. Experimenting with many objects to engage the naturally curious birds, aviculturist Sara Mandel found that the penguins took quite a liking to an iPad game she got for her cats. To Mandel's surprise, the little birds became obsessed and playing with the tablet is now a part of their daily enrichment routine—something that ultimately benefits the cute critters' mental and physical well-being.

We spent the day at the Symbol studio to learn about the brand's ethos, watch them assemble a special edition of their newest product—the Stereo Cabinet—that we commissioned using Spanish oak, the same wood that’s used in the sherry casks that age The Macallan Rare Cask.

Cool Hunting Video: Fferrone Design coolhunting 2014-11-20 | Recently, we asked Felicia Ferrone of Fferrone Design for a hand in a project designing custom glassware for The Macallan Rare Cask whisky. In collaboration with Gentner Design, the duo created stunning custom glassware—as well as a special carrying tray. Ferrone, known for elegant and disruptive glassware, has since expanded to design a full line of furniture and other housewares. We paid her a visit in her Chicago, IL studio to talk process and ventured out to Gentner to check out the local metal-working operation.
Cool Hunting Video: The Sidecar coolhunting 2014-10-30 | For his latest collaboration with Moore and Giles, expert bartender Jim Meehan—of PDT fame—decided to take a stab at creating the ultimate bar cart. Going above and beyond, Meehan focused on creating a super-durable and highly functional cart that would also serve as an elegant piece of furniture. The cart has been aptly named The Sidecar. Featuring a stainless steel frame and Virginia black walnut and birch wood finishes, the cart is eye-catching and can stand up to the abuse that comes with slinging cocktails. CHV: Kawasaki Building The Wheel coolhunting 2014-10-23 | In our fourth and final piece from our visit with Kawasaki in Lincoln, NE we went to a smaller corner of their enormous plant. While probably the least glamorous of their products, their wheels may be the most practical and abundant. The company brings in raw steel and spits out a finished wheel—the entire process takes place thousands of times a day, and no matter how many times you've seen it, remains mesmerizing.
CHV: Kawasaki Jet Ski Assembly coolhunting 2014-10-22 | The third video from our visit to Kawasaki's labyrinthine production facility covers their jet ski assembly line. A longtime favorite of water-faring hobbyists, constructing a jet ski is a rather complicated process involving a multitude of impressive industrial processes. The most compelling is the 3,000 ton custom press which almost instantaneously converts flexible fiberglass fabric into a resilient hull.
CHV: Kawasaki Railcar Manufacturing Facility coolhunting 2014-10-22 | In the second video in our series from Kawasaki's plant in Lincoln, Nebraska, we visit the company's railcar facility. While the brand is traditionally associated with the power-sports industry, they actually manufacture an enormous array of products and even build railcars for some of the nation's biggest municipal transit authorities, like the MTA and DC Metro. CHV: Kawasaki Hydrographic Painting coolhunting 2014-10-17 | We recently toured the cavernous Kawasaki Motors plant in Lincoln, Nebraska. Within the endless production lines—making products ranging from ATVs to subway cars—we found the company uses several fascinating industrial processes. This is the first of our series of videos from the plant where we visited the Hydrographics Department to see how a paper-thin ink decal is liquified and transferred to a surface—a technique reminiscent of paper marbling, entirely innovative and quite magical.
Cool Hunting Video: Dabls African Bead Museum coolhunting 2014-10-09 | There's no short supply of eclectic public art in Detroit, MI, but none quite match the magnitude and message of MBAD's African Bead Museum, more commonly known as Dabl's Bead Museum—named for visionary founder and artist Olayami Dabls. Large-scale sculptural works and meticulously ornate building details define the appropriated landscape. And all of it was an afterthought, because what you'll find inside happens to be a one-of-a-kind African bead collection. Something Dabls himself explains defined both medicine and social-economic class back in the day. Dabls personally collected the African artifacts within, and built the inspired artwork outside.
Cool Hunting Video: CH Edition Zambia 2014 coolhunting 2014-10-09 | After hosting our first successful Cool Hunting Edition trip to Africa in summer 2012, the CH team was eager to design another trip and revisit Zambia with a new group two years later. Embedded in the wilderness of South Luangwa National Park, our guests enjoyed safari excursions each day and returned to the luxurious accommodations of The Bushcamp Company by night. Similar to our last trip, we had the privilege of visiting some local businesses and residents. We recently spent the day in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn to take a look at the newly opened Sims Municipal Recycling facility that focuses on material recovery. Just one step in the recycling process, this facility sorts recyclable materials from all five boroughs of New York City. The facility—which itself is made almost entirely of recycled steel—uses the most state-of-the-art technology to process the bulk of the almost 900 tons of material delivered there per day. We got some valuable insights into how that giant load of stuff is sorted and prepared to become future products. One of the secrets: high-tech cameras that scan every single object on the conveyor belt.
Cool Hunting Video: 27 Robots coolhunting 2014-09-30 | Not unlike the laboratory of a mad scientist, Josue Maldonaldo's gadget-filled studio on the outskirts of Detroit is full of odd and fascinating creations. By day, Maldonaldo sculpts life-sized model cars for Ford, but by night, he creates his very own artwork as part of a side project he's titled 27 Robots. Combining found objects and parts molded from his own casts, Maldonaldo's sculptures are purposefully musical ("so people have to pick them up"), but always wildly imaginative and charming.
Cool Hunting Video: 21 Icons coolhunting 2014-09-30 | Returning to Africa for the second Cool Hunting Safari in Zambia, we made a stop in Johannesburg to scope out the up-and-coming design scene. A few of our guests have strong ties to the city, one being wildlife and portrait photographer Adrian Steirn, whose renowned exhibit "21 Icons" was being featured at Johannesburg's Museum of African Design (MOAD) before beginning its world tour. Adrian gave us some insight into his experiences photographing and interviewing each of the 21 iconic figures of South Africa. Cool Hunting Video: First Look at the Mercedes-AMG GT coolhunting 2014-09-09 | Today Mercedes-Benz and AMG announce their new super car. The GT is the latest in a long line of super-charged and sporty vehicles from the car maker. We were lucky to have the chance to see the GT in action on the salt flats of the Bonneville Speedway in Utah and were one of the first few to see the car without its dazzling camouflage. From the sound of the engine to the heart-stopping power of the machine, this car impresses across the board.
