My Hand Drill Spindle Tips Rarely Glaze. Treated Fireboard? beinggoodtopeople 2022-10-15 | I used wood from a broken down and rotted out split rail fence for my hand drill fire board. It seemed the perfect specimen. It was lightweight, took a thumbnail impression well, and was dry. I was shocked to find out on the burn-in that the spindle's tip had Quickly glazed over. Not getting any friction or dust, I knew that all I had to do was cut away the glazing from the tip and start over. LOL! On the next try the tip glazed right over again. I guess that fence wood was treated and may have been causing the problem. I found a nicely degraded and dry enough piece of Virginia Pine on the ground for a new fire board and carried on. Come see.
