Arizonas Horseshoe Dam Spillway Overflow, March 2023 The Velar Nasal 2023-03-26 | I said it's been six years since it last flowed, but apparently it also briefly flowed in 2019, but it was nowhere near as much as this. On March 12th, it was releasing 5,000 cubic feet per second, and by around March 18th it was releasing a whopping 25,000 cubic feet per second, as you can see at the very end of the video.For those of you wondering, Horseshoe Lake is a resevoir on the Verde River, northeast of the Phoenix area. It's typically used as the "extra" resevoir by SRP (Arizona's big water company that practicaly runs the whole Phoenix area). It's the first lake to fill with water after heavy rains and snowmelt and also the first to dry out. Most of the time it's nearly dry and this spillway barely ever flows. Every few years it rains enough that they need to open the enormous spillway on top of the dam to let water down the Verde River to reach Bartlett Lake to the south. This spot is publicly accessible, but it's a long journey that requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle to traverse some very eroded roads. So, as of April 1st, the spillway will probably be open for a few more days but after that you'll have to wait (potentially) many years unless our drought era is truly coming to an end.
