How I Implement Audio in Games (2024 Technical Sound Design Demo)

TeraCMusic 2024-09-08 | As part of my audio mentorship at work, I was tasked in taking this Udemy Unreal Engine course I completed and fleshing out the game project a bit more with audio and interactive music. I still have more to do, but I think this is a solid start!
Instead of using MetaSounds, I decided to get more familiar with Quartz and how the music queuing and clock system works. I felt that having this kind of limitation will only help me in the long run, especially if a game project I do audio for is in Unreal 4 instead of Unreal 5.

What kinds of improvements would you do to this project? I'd love to hear your opinions and continue to optimize my blueprinting skills!

With this post, the entire Solistia side of my EP now has a video to go along with each track! This one was actually not even on my list when I first came up with the EP idea. I was supposed to do The Crestlands instead! I even have the unfinished FL Studio project still. I might come back to it sometime when I have time since that's also a really pretty one (but let's be honest, all the night themes in Octopath II are incredible)!

This was quite an involved project but I am so happy with how it turned out! This was my first time arranging for saxophone and having a main vocalist that is not myself so it was a really fun one to make!

This is also the first video I edited using DaVinci Resolve! It took a bit of getting used to, but I appreciate that the process of editing is almost exactly the same as Premiere Pro. It made it sooo much easier to work with!

We might do more of these collaborations later in the year, I don't know if I can handle another one of these anytime soon with all the other music projects I am working on. Hopefully you all enjoy this, though!

Wow, this has been a long time coming! We started this album before the pandemic I believe. A lot of things happened since then but I'm so glad that we were able to get this released!

I filmed this cover back at the end of 2020, so this is actually kind of a trip back in time with my old Canon camera! I apologize for the old end credits video, I apparently deleted the video footage so this is all I have without re-filming everything. Let's just call this one a throwback!

This one has been a long time coming! I am so happy to finally post my own version of this amazing song! For this one, I wanted to lean into the harmonies and add some backing strings, and I really love how it turned out. I kind of annoyed my SO by singing/humming the song too often so I ended up recording as much as I could while he was out and about lol.

Long time, no see! I am finally back with another cover for you all, and this time it is none other than Baldur's Gate 3! I've been listening to the OST lately and found some real gems~

The source track for this is pretty short at around 1 minute long... I wanted to extend it a bit by adding a B section and then build up to the grand return to the A section once more. I watched the cutscene where this track plays and I imagined what it could've sounded like if the actual cutscene sequence itself was a bit longer and even more dramatic. I'm pretty happy with the results!

I'm sure most of you thought this would be a cover of Down by the River, and I do want to cover it! But there have been SO many amazing renditions already that I want to make sure mine stands out in a unique way. No idea how I'm going to do that, but I will figure it out eventually!

I might not be able to get a spooky cover up for Halloween, which is so sad since I feel like I have the most fun when I make Halloween covers. Work is just crazy right now and I am still figuring out how to balance everything. I guess that's true adulting, huh?

Task: Craft an awe-inspiring soundscape based on the haiku:

sea's sound in the breeze
captured in a pretty shell
nature's gift to me

lying on my bed
holding music to my ear
I drift out to sea

I decided to take the 'lying on my bed' bit and ran with it for the beginning to really set the scene. I wanted to add some sound effects with a shell to further add to the idea, but I sadly did not have enough time. For my first soundscape, I think it's not too bad! Since haikus originated in Japan, I wanted to take the traditional pentatonic scale and use it to rhythmically emulate the poetry lines while still keeping the ethereal mood.

Happy May, everyone!

I still have to finish playing Octopath II, but I am SO in love with the OST thus far! Once I heard this track (specifically, the night version), I knew I had to do an arrangement! Seriously, why do all the night themes sound like me? Does anyone else get that feeling too?

The past 6 months have been something incredible. We announced our game, and I feel like I've already learned so much from Unbroken Studios! I am super excited to continue working with them to make sure this game is the best it can be :) I'll do my best to make covers when I can, but it might end up being an every other month thing.

Some of you also might have noticed a new accessory: I got engaged!! I am still getting used to that fact, haha. I am beyond ecstatic for this next stage in my life!

Happy 2023, everyone! This is my first cover for the year, and I honestly think this is a perfect track to start 2023 off right! I know I won't be able to make covers as often since I have a full-time job now, but I will do my best to keep everyone updated. I will most likely be covering some tracks from Octopath Traveler II assuming the OST is as good as the first game! I am really looking forward to playing the full game and seeing what tracks speak to me.

Wow, so much has happened since my last cover! I definitely need to do a channel update at some point, but basically I am modifying my future content on here slightly:

- I will make and post covers when I want, not out of necessity to earn a living (Halloween cover is still in the works!).
- I will mainly post original compositions that are videogame-inspired, or part of my upcoming RPG (still in development)!
- There might be some demo reels posted to the channel in the near future as I am working on making a sound design and composition reel (for game dev applications)!
- I am open to other suggestions you might have! Should I bring back my Theory Thursday video series??

Phew, what a commission this was! Crit came to me back in April with the idea of having me make a medley from this game series, and it is finally finished! I had a ton of fun making this, and I hope you all enjoy!

My SO and I finished XC2 a few months back, and we delved into 3 as soon as it was released. Once again, the music did not disappoint! I know there aren't as many catchy themes this time around, but the somber mood of the OST totally speaks to me (for obvious reasons). I cannot wait for XC3 to be licensable so I can get this medley distributed!

I wanted to mention that I took a simpler approach for the video -- I think this may be the start of a new direction for the channel. I will still post covers here and there, but there might not be the usual video component.

Also, some news: I will be doing some work behind-the-scenes as a QA Tester for an indie game dev company! I want to put most of my focus on this position, since I believe it's a great way to get into the game dev industry and prove my competency. And who knows, maybe this will lead to a sound design or music composition gig later on!

My SO and I recently finished playing XC2 for the first time a few weeks ago, and MAN, there are too many good tracks to cover! Here's the first track I knew I had to arrange immediately after hearing it for the first time in-game. I decided to turn it into a piano and violin duet with some other elements in there, and I think it really enhanced the emotions in the original!
