Spinosaurus at Waters Edge | Behind the Art James Gurney 2023-09-10 | James Gurney demonstrates the step-by-step process of painting two restorations of the dinosaur Spinosaurus under the direction of Dr. Paul Sereno of the University of Chicago. Dr. Sereno's scientific paper in Nature Magazine is called "Spinosaurus is Not an Aquatic Dinosaur." Sereno's team developed a CT-based skeletal restoration of Spinosaurus and examined its hydrodynamic properties. They found that the digital model of Spinosaurus performed very poorly in water, supporting the alternative "semi-aquatic hypothesis." Paint Opaquely Over a Red Priming James Gurney 2022-06-18 | Red is the opposite of green, painting a scene with a lot of green, you can paint over a reddish or pinkish priming. The little bits of remaining red will perk up the greens and blues. This strategy works with any opaque medium (gouache, casein, acrylic or oil). I'll demo how a red casein priming adds spice and energy to the greenery and sky colors of this gouache study. The plein-air painting shows a Kenworth cement mixer parked near the Hannaford supermarket in Kingston, New York. There are basically two types of bobble head designs: 1) Head on a loose, bouncy spring, which works for upright human characters.2) Head on a counterweight, which works best for animals.With type 2, the trick is to make the head light enough to balance against the lead weight, so I used craft foam for the head. You also have to sculpt the hollow body with enough space for the counterweight to swing freely up and down and side to side.
