So the question is... what exactly is it?The DUBattle Royale is, as the name suggests, a competition amongst dubbers in the Hello!Project karaoke community based off of YouTube Chorus' Chorus Battle. I got in contact with the organizer of that group a while back to bring up the idea of doing a version of what they were doing, but for our side of the online karaoke community. I wanted to check first with them to make sure that we had the permission to move forward with the idea before making any concrete plans, as essentially this is their idea with only a few modifications to fit it to our unique community. I also got in contact with several other projects to see if we could get the support of other people who might aid us in getting the word out and promoting the competition. Thankfully, everyone was super nice about and supportive of the idea, and as a result... well, here we are!It's important to note that this battle is not meant to be a mean-spirited, serious, no-holds-barred contest to prove who the "best" dubbers are or anything like that. The point of this battle is to promote a friendship and coming together of as many different members of the dubbing community as possible, under the banner of a friendly, fun competition. Anyone who doesn't follow this idea or who tries to turn this into a catty, hateful, or mean-spirited thing will be disqualified immediately and are encouraged not to apply in the first place. If you enter this competition, you are expected to treat everyone else's entries as you would want yours to be treated—you can be honest, but mutual support and respect between groups is the utopian aim. For what it's worth, it has not affected voting, as the voting more or less reflects a decent ranking of the groups with only one or two exceptions. I'm not much of a producer, but I've been singing and performing since I was about 9. I discovered Hello! Project in 2005 and began singing online karaoke soon after that. I have been studying Japanese at my high school for 4 years now and have previously had the roles of color-coder, romanizer, and site administrator of projecthello.com within the past 5 years. The thing I look for the most in the dubs is the vocals. If you gotta bring your big girl diva voice to Onna to Otoko, YOU BRING that diva. If you're singing a sweet ballad, you bring the calm and sensitivity to your voice. The most important thing is also just to have fun with it! I'm Mandy and as anyone who knows me can tell you, I like to keep things short and sweet. So I'm suspecting this little intro might reach 5 sentences tops if I'm lucky. Anyways, I started out dubbing on a whim and happened upon a few auditions not really knowing what I was getting myself into. I wasn't a Hello!Project fan, I didn't even know who Takahashi Ai was. I somehow managed to get into HanaProject and it was a done deal from there. I have way too much fun doing this stuff to ever quit. But basically, I used to a perfect example of fail and I've worked my way up to being a pretty decent mixer and improved my voice lots so I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone grow immensely during this competition :DI'm really going to be looking for emotion in your singing. (Go with it.) I'm Ronnie, a subleader at Hana Project. I like to use capital letters and uncool slang. My experience with dubbing goes back about two years, but in addition to that, I've performed in musical theatre from a young age and was trained in a style of classical singing. Though I have some skill vocally and technically, I'll leave that to the experts. What I'm really looking for is creativity. Too many dubs are cookie-cutter imitations of the original—which is fine when you're NOT battling it out for a competition. Stellar vocals and mixing are great/necessary, but what is your chorus going to do to make this song YOUR song? And, less categorical, I'd like to see entries with some HEART. Show me you aren't just going through the motions, but that you're actually having fun and caring about the work you put out—not just that you care about winning. Humor us, you guys.---------------------When I was 13, I came across a group attempting to create an audio radio play for Final Fantasy VII and I immediately became obsessed with the idea of voice acting and became involved. This was 11 years ago. Yes, I'm old as shit. Back in my day, we didn't HAVE untalented actors voicing our video game characters for us! We had to do it OURSELVES! And we thought $30 Logitech USB mics were the HIGHEST FORM OF TECHNOLOGY EVER.After auditioning for radio plays and dubs for so long I literally got cast as all 9 planetary senshi yet only got to hear my performances maybe three times, I started singing and mixing songs since, while not necessarily easier to do than a radio play or anime dub, is at least more condensced. It was 2004 and at that time, youtube hadn't really been invented and ___ Projects consisted of a small handful of forums you could easily keep track of. I started Yo! Project with the then standard groups (the first of which being Yomusu, which is active even to this day) and after about two years of that silly nonsense I turned it into a mirror of the forums I saw in my voice acting days, like FLAVA or the still active www.voiceactingalliance.com. A place to find auditions and hold auditions of your own as well as providing resources to master the craft and many, many other things we try to do. The goal is to bring the dubbing community together!These days I run two groups, XOXO (covering SNSD), Rianasu (my boy band, the name is a play off of Johnny's, THINK ABOUT IT) and co-run RY!P (a boy band covering K-pop) and Yomusu (aforementioned Morning Musume group) as well as random K-pop one shots and my own solos. As much as I love vocals that don't suck and mixing that goes above and beyond, my absolute faaaavorite thing in dubbing is to hear people improve. Firstly, for those who are wondering why my experience is a ridiculous 8 years, it's mostly because I've been around when youtube began in 2003 and began recording/mixing simple pieces back then as well in my previous account, rennette. My experience for groupdubs began much later, and I really turned to producing and mixing for groups in early February of 2009, I believe, also around the time Hana Pro was created too. It started off as a summer seasonal group where singers were gathered over time to sing "All for One and One for All" which was officially completed September of the same year with a full cast. Several groups have come on and off following this success, but many remained as short term groups since I preferred temporary groups to keep quality up but also meet and work with new people. In 2010 of January first, my first permanent group arose, as the SNSD group, Femme Fatale, still in the works today.With all the songs and pieces I've heard up until now, I hold a great bias to groups that are able to exude creativity and step out of the box. Whether they are able to edit videos into fancy windows, do multilanguage dubs, do a groupdub of over 30 people, anything out of the ordinary draws me in. Of course, I am also high on the quality and techniques of mixing as well. If a mixer is able to have a group of different singers with different mics sound consistent, I would notice that for sure. If a clear stutter or stylistic autotune is carefully placed, I belive that can draw out a piece's intrinsic value as well.All in all, I'm looking forward to what everyone can show for their group. Humor us, you guys.---------------------Hello, my name is Purply and I am the founder and producer of Totally Up! Project, initially known as Twilight Legend back in 2007. I run the scenes behind Totally Up! Project by color-coding, organizing releases, and getting everyone to turn in parts on time. I joined the dubbing community in July of 2007 after a few months of voice acting led me there by accident.I have been classically trained since May 2007, so I have an ear for telling if a singer is under or above pitch. I may not have much to offer on the mixing end, other than telling if a part is off-time, but I can tell if a voice is straining to reach certain notes or if the right emotion is not used for a particular song. In other words, I will judge more critically on the blending capabilities(i.e. how well you all go together) and the vocal techniques the singers used in the genre of the dub they selected(ballad, energetic, pop, etc.).I am so excited to hear what everyone has to offer and I can't wait for this competition to get under way! My name is Takara, but over time has kinda evolved into Taka or Takii so I answer to either of the three. I am a judge (obviously) and I am really excited beyond belief to see what the teams will come out with! I'm the founder, producer, leader and main mixer of IKP (Formerly known as Iro Kokoro Project or sometimes IroKo). When it comes to dubbing, I physically have chose not to sing but rather focus on mixing and leading alone. I have been on the dubbing community since August 2009, 17 months, but I have ran IKP from November 2009 to Currently which is what I consider my dubbing career. I generally am a softy and I think i'm overly nice to people, but when I rant my opinion, I can turn out to be real rude not meaning to be. I apologize ahead of time for any offense I might cause, haha. I tend to be a hard judge on mixing mainly but I'm also a real stickler for pitching. The dubbing community mostly knows me as Aoi. I am a sub-leader at Hana Project, and that's why I get to be a judge. Hooray! I posted my very first dub in December of 2008, and kept going sporadically until Hana Project finally decided to have me (on my second time auditioning) in September '09 and haven't stopped since.They tell me I'm a good vocalist; I do personally feel that I have a knack for delivering the proper emotion and energy within my vocals, so those two aspects in addition to are what I will be focusing on. I'll try not to be overly critical about pitching errors, but I will be looking out for that as well so just a heads up. None of that "I be singin flat like Miyabi" bull, tyvm. Also we like to feel way more important than we are. As a result, we're going to tell you all of these things in a series of videos. Humor us, you guys.---------------------Hay gurl hay, my name is Kappa and I am the main mastermind behind this competition project. As the video aptly describes me, I'm the producer/founder and HBIC at Hana Project, a little group that took off at some point when I wasn't paying attention. I've been at dubbing for about 2 1/2 years, but most of my experience has taken place with HanaPro, so I count it as only about 2 solid years.I'm not much of a talent with singing, but I do have an ear (and mouse?) for mixing and a sense for producing, and after having been in the YTChorus battle, I have all kinds of ideas floating around about how to make a dub stand out from the rest. As a result, you can expect that I'll judge you hardest on how successfully your dub came together, your overall mixing (with extra attention to accurate timing.. warning: I am neurotic beyond belief about this), and how well you worked to make your entry Not Just Another Fucking Nanchatte Rottara Yume Kiss Kiss Oibito.After so much time spent planning and waiting for this to get started up, I'm super excited to see what comes out of this competition and can't wait for the end of Round 1.
