(Inaugural) Tabletop Terrors 2022-02-21 | Tabletop Terrors Productivity Show and Tell!Positivity, creativity, and productivity has always been at the heart of Tabletop Terrors. We’ve come up with something we’re excited to show off to our wonderful community of creators. Join us for the inaugural Tabletop Terrors Community Show and Tell! The premise is simple. In this livestream, we'll be going through our own creative works as well as community submissions! We will spend time showing off and discussing each creative work. Start thinking about what you’d like to submit!Creative submissions for the Show and Tell do not need to be perfect or complete, anything you have that you want to submit will be accepted. We will be focusing largely on the pride and joy of creating, so there’s no need to worry about your work being criticized or scrutinized too deeply (unless that is what you want!). Attention will mostly be paid to supporting and showing off our wonderful community! We plan to show off some of our projects as well! Don’t have anything made yet? Don’t have any plans to make anything? You do not need a completed work to submit. In fact, it’s better if you don’t! We want these show and tells to get people excited about creating and to offer a platform to our community to shine. If you’re willing to accept the challenge, get working on something to show off!Here is what we are asking for!Any type of creative work. It can be, but is not required to be tabletop gaming oriented. We’re accepting game rules, poetry/prose, visual art, worldbuilding, music, voice acting, anything you consider creative!Due to the nature of the format, please keep submissions to a reasonable length. In worlds where fire can be created from nothing (like Igni in Witcher or the fire plasmid in Bioshock, fire bending in Avatar), wouldn’t that break the so called laws of nature? And could that be abused? Are there limits to that? What is the science of magic called?In Legend of Korra, some benders work, shooting lightning for hours to power the city. It’s like a more efficient version of a person standing there cranking a wheel all day. This is a world where they have “magic” but it has limits. Using #TRPG Mechanics in Unique Ways Tabletop Terrors 2021-03-18 | What is your default stance in an RPG: do you adhere to the letter of the rules , or the spirit of the rules? Can you do both?I just had one of the most incredible gaming experiences, and it was because of an inventive use of the mechanics. But it didn't feel cheap, and it didn't feel fudged. Jeff and I were in an epic, final session of a long running campaign -- it was the final fight with the final boss -- the stakes couldn't be higher, and it was TOUGH.It was a 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons session, and the Dungeon Master (Jeremy Lilley of Erasmus Expeditions) did something simple but profound involving the Bardic Inspiration die, and a point of inspiration. It changed the entire direction of the game, and the outcome was exactly what we needed for the fight-- BUT it did not follow the rules... or at least the letter of the rules. You can hear Jeff tell the story of what happened at the beginning of this video, and then get some tips on how you can do these kinds of things in your game. Ignore the Rules on Purpose Sometimes (D&D and Other Games) Tabletop Terrors 2021-03-11 | Is it sometimes better to ignore the rules of a TRPG? When should you use the mechanics of a game, and when shouldn't you?(If you want to see a master of this principal, check out Jeremy at youtube.com/c/ErasmasExpeditions -- and consider subscribing! In addition to his amazing content, it was just his birthday.)Our thought is that you shouldn't gate the wrong situations behind mechanics. A classic example of this is picking a lock. There are times when the story isn't about picking the lock, its about the boss fight on the other side of the door. That's the perfect example of a time to potentially hand-wave the picking of the lockAlso, if a situation repeats itself, consider handwaving mechanics then as well. The first time you encounter some guards or a trap, it could be a great way to build tension to require dice rolls and a chance of failure. But the second, or third or even fourth time, consider making things narrative. (Because the situations become less important to the story or the characters.)But what do you think about this?We answer those questions and more in this video. I've been playtesting some systems that I'm working on with my 6-year-old daughter. Her only experience with RPGs is whatever I've played with her, and she's never played D&D. As I am working to create systems that have a unique feel and tone to them, it became illuminated to me that the default in D&D as I've experienced is to "kill the threat."In this video we talk about why killing things is so often the default for many tables, and how it's not an incidental pattern, but one that is inherent to the game. In this video we not only discuss why the default mode in Dungeons & Dragons is to kill, but also offer up some ways to change that up at your table! Random Encounters in RPGs (But Totally Different) || Re-Invent Random Tabletop Terrors 2020-12-03 | Random encounters are a polarizing topic in the land of Dungeons & Dragons and other RPGs. There is one camp who feels that randomized encounters are the only way to make the world feel inhabited, dangerous, and alive, Another camp feels that an encounter that is totally random can take a tightly-paced, story-driven session and derail it entirely, feeling like the random element was a tacked on waste of time.But what if you could take the best of both worlds and smash them together to create something totally new that does both of these things?
