Since the beginning of BVS in 1948, there have been 12 BVS Directors starting with Ora Huston from 1948-1959. Chelsea has served on two occasions with BVS, with projects serving with On Earth Peace as well as serving as a staff member of BVS. The second term took her on a cross-country bike trip promoting peace and volunteer service through BVS. Chelsea shares about that bike trip and her extensive history with the Church of the Brethren. "Brethren Voices" met with Chelsea as she conducted the orientation of the 334th BVS Unit at Camp Koinonia, near Cle Elum, Washington. Brent Carlson hosts program #222 of "Brethren Voices," which had its beginning, nearly 19 years ago.Since 1948, BVS'ers have provided hospitality for families of people in prison, served in local soup kitchens and homeless shelters, built houses for those without shelter, and walked in solidarity with sisters and brothers living with mental illness. Making a Difference - 75 Years of Brethren Volunteer Service BrethrenVoices 2023-10-30 | Brethren Volunteer Service had its beginnings in 1948, not long after the ending of World War II. It was the youth of the Church of the Brethren who made a proposal to its Annual Conference, held in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to create a volunteer service program that would provide opportunities for youth, to help make a difference in the world. It was something that happened, perhaps like nothing else in the church, as it was adopted unanimously, without any opposition. Just two months later, BVS was established, with the first volunteers beginning their service.Chelsea Goss Skillen , the Director of BVS serves as the host of this editon of "Brethren Voices." Eight are major volcanic islands in the North Pacific Ocean. The Islands sit on the Pacific Plate and are the exposed peaks of a great undersea mountain range known as the Hawaiian- Emperor Seamount Range. They formed over millions of years, by volcanic activity over a hotspot in the Earth’s mantle. For many Hawaiians, the islands are known as “paradise.” For that reason, nearly 10 million people will visit Hawaii this year. They aren’t the only visitors. We’re bring you the story of the Humpback Whales that migrate over 3,000 miles to give birth to their young each year. With the help of Emma Nelson, naturalist and captain for Ultimate Whale Watch & Snorkel of Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, we’ll share some of the story of these magnificent giants. Many years ago, Lahaina, Hawaii was a town, once filled with whale hunters, but fortunately, today folks enjoy seeing the humpbacks up close and personal. It All Started . . . .With An Idea!!!! - Heifer Project and Heifer International BrethrenVoices 2023-02-23 | Dan West was a farmer from Indiana, as well as a leader in the Church of the Brethren. In 1937, Dan went to Spain and volunteered in a program, that combined the efforts of the Mennonites, Brethren and American Friends Service Committee, to assist the survivors of the Spanish Civil War. He developed a personal desire, to do as much for peace, as soldiers do in war. They gave out food and clothing to people in need and Dan saw first-hand, that giving people, food, was a short-term solution. As a farmer, he felt that providing them with animals, would provide a steady supply of nutritious food for an entire family. With a great deal of planning and inspired generosity, on the part of Brethren members and friends, the “Heifer Project” became a reality. The United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration endorsed Dan’s plan, to send livestock to war torn Europe. Following the Second World War, a group of young farmers volunteered to accompany the first shipments of livestock, into devastated communities of Europe, Asia and even behind the Iron Curtain.I n 1946, Greece became the first destination to receive a test shipment. These volunteers became known as the Seagoing Cowboys, as they cared for the animals, on these ocean-going trips. Seven-thousand Seagoing Cowboys made 360 journeys, during a period of nearly, 3 years. Childrens Disaster Services - Part 2 BrethrenVoices 2022-12-17 | The December 2022 Edition of Brethren Voices” featured John Kinsel and his experiences with Children’s Disaster Services. Since 1980, when disaster strikes, Children’s Disaster Services has responded to meet the needs of children, by setting up childcare centers in shelter and disaster assistance centers, established by FEMA or the Red Cross. “Brethren Voices” meets with John Kinsel, a 40-year volunteer with CDS and member of the Beavercreek Church of the Brethren, located in Southern Ohio. In this second program with John, he shares the “Kit of Comfort” which is a “box of supplies,” (toys, games, art supplies, etc.) stuffed in a suitcase, made for easy travel by car or plane, to the disaster site. Upon arrival, and the opening of the childcare center, the “Kit of Comfort,” is, according to John Kinsel, an “instant child carecenter, in a box and you don’t even have to add water.” The kits are made by individuals or churches, for placement in locations across the country, where disasters historically occur. The kits are used in many different types of settings, ranging from an auditorium, gym, Sunday School classroom, below a set of stairs or in a parking lot.Kinsel states, “CDS establishes the child care centers, to create a space for children, as they are. Our volunteers are not there to teach children, act as counselors, or analyze children. We create a safe space for the children, offering an accepting relationship where the healing can begin to take place. The Two Best Friends Complete Their Volunteer Service In America BrethrenVoices 2022-10-23 | The April 2022 edition of "Brethren Voices" featured the stories of Florian Wesseler and his best friend Johannes Stitz. The two young men from Germany provided service in Brethren Volunteer Service, at SnowCap Community Charities in Gresham, Oregon. A long-term SnowCap volunteer, Scott Bringhurst stated, "The last 7 months have been amazing at SnowCap, because we've had two young guys with a very positive attitude, with a willingness to work, really, hard. The volunteers following them have very big shoes to fill. These guys will be long remembered by SnowCap."Florian credits Johannes with the idea of doing a term of service, together. They applied to a German organization that works with volunteers and were referred to Brethren Volunteer Service. This eventually led them to SnowCap, which has received high recommendations from previous German volunteers.The two volunteers used their off time, to do traveling in the United States including trips to Los Angeles and San Francisco. A mid-term BVS conference took them to Chicago, and they made a side trip to New York, before returning to Portland.Both, Johannes and Florian enjoyed visits from their families while in the United States. While in Portland, both families had the opportunities to visit SnowCap and get a "good look" at some of the contributions that their sons were making in the Portland community. Scott Duffey stated, “The song was a prayer of solidarity with the Nigerian EYN Church.” The Church of the Brethren has a long history of over 100 years of involvement in Nigeria, providing numerous services including health care and medical services.Brent Carlson hosts this program, which features the sharing of David Sollenberger, Moderator of the 2022 Annual Conference. When in danger, “an enemy” provided medical assistance to his group, following the start of the Iraq war.The Conference also returned to a busy business schedule after focusing on the compelling vision in 2021. Over the past 17 years, 12 Annual Conference Moderators have shared their life experiences in the Church of the Brethren. When the variety of the featured stories are reviewed, it's remarkable to see that the lives of Brethren reach out to so many across this planet, encompassing many aspects of life.This edition, number 206 of “Brethren Voices,” provides memorable moments of the 2021, virtual Annual Conference of the Church of the Brethren. March For Our Lives - 2022 BrethrenVoices 2022-07-02 | In 2018, - March For Our Lives - was the organization created by the survivors of the horrific shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. The goal of the organization was, 'Not One More'. No more school shooting-drills and no more burying loved ones was a big goal.It's now 2022 and everywhere we look, gun violence is decimating our families and communities. Mass shootings are happening everywhere we live, in shopping malls, concerts, schools, places of worship, at the workplace. According to the statistics, in 2021, over 44-thousand people died in America from gun violence. That amounts to a number, greater than 120 Americans, every, single, day. Recently, March For Our Lives, rallies were held at over 450 locations in the United States and worldwide. - Brethren Voices - joined with participants at one of the March For Our Lives rallies, to listen to the concerns and fears of adults and children of all ages. We found that children carry their fears with them to school each day. Students have practiced lock-down-drills in case a shooter would come to their school. Some parents of toddlers are fearful of the day when their children become school age. The place, Schwarzenau, Germany. They committed to living that faith in community. The group, called themselves, 'brethren.' These men and women believed that Jesus had intended for his followers a different kind of life - one based on peaceful action, plain and compassionate living, and a shared search for truth.That event happened 314-years-ago, but there have been many Brethren, down through the many years, that have had the same devotion to living out their faith, peacefully, simply and together. Some Brethren who come to mind include John Kline, a Brethren pastor who attempted to minister to families on both sides of the Mason Dixon Line, during the Civil War. Others include M.R. Zigler, Dan West, Anna Mow, Mary Blocher Smeltzer, Chuck Boyer and the list goes on, down through the history of the Brethren, to the present day.With this program, we remember Chuck Boyer who we interviewed back in 2010. He is no longer with us, as he passed away, shortly, after our interview. Volunteers Are The Engine That Makes Things Happen BrethrenVoices 2022-04-27 | In the mid 1960's, the basic life needs of many in East Multnomah County were not being met by any agency or organization. For those in need, when the cupboards were bare, many would make trips to area churches, in an attempt to find food. Because of their faith, 27 area churches, including Peace Church of the Brethren, stepped in to help make a difference for so many residents. On January 16, 1967, Suburban Neighborhoods Operation Witness Community Action Program was born. Today, it is known as SnowCap.Originally, three centers were set up, but in 1968, the three centers were merged and headquartered at Savage Memorial Presbyterian Church, near David Douglas High School. The basement facility at Savage Memorial was quite small and they soon outgrew the space.'Brethren Voices' met with SnowCap's Executive Director, Kirsten Wageman, who shares the rest of the story. She states, "Volunteers are the engine behind everything that SnowCap does."This edition of 'Brethren voices,' shares the dedication of its volunteers who range from school age to many years older. "Whether it's sorting clothing, assisting with grocery boxing or processing celery, there's a job for you and all are welcome," states Kirsten Wageman.--
Two Best Friends - Filling the Gap With Brethren Volunteer Service BrethrenVoices 2022-04-05 | A Story of Florian and Johannes. “It all started in Gutersloh, North-Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, when I was 6 years old,” stated Florian. It’s a story of Florian and his best friend Johannes. The two young men are currently, serving in Brethren Volunteer Service at SnowCap Community Charities in Gresham, Oregon, helping those who are in need, of emergency food assistance.Florian, age 18, has a younger brother, Felix and their parents are Guido and Miriam Wesseler. His father works for a large company as a manager and his mother works for German Customs.Johannes, 19, lived with his parents Andre’ and Silke Stitz. His father is a social worker for children and teenagers and mother works as a geriatric nurse and counselor for seniors. Johannes also has a younger brother, Luca, who hopes to do volunteer service after high school, with an interest in serving disabled persons.In 2002, Florian was born in Bielefeld, which is known for its university and famous for its traditional festivals. The family moved to Gutersloh in 2003 and at the age of 6 and 7, Florian and Johannes met on the soccer field and became teammates. Both having the love of soccer, led them to becoming, “really good friends.” “We did confirmation together at our home church. After that we volunteered together as staff members for a Confirmation Camp in Berlin, for the youth of the community. We served as counselors for the young confirmands, providing lessons and recreation. It was also the time when we really became close friends. - Florian“It’s quite common in Germany to do a ‘gap year,’ following high school graduation and the beginning of college. This was first discussed in the 10th grade of my English class. It allows students to gain experiences before entering college, Florian said. “Both of us didn’t want to start college right after high school, as we were uncertain about what to do after graduation,” Johannes said. “Florian credits Johannes with the idea of doing a term of service, together. What an amazing idea!” We applied to German organizations that work with volunteers and were referred to Brethren Volunteer Service. NCP works with local groups in the Dominican Republic to foster sustainable development in mountain communities. In South Sudan, the South Sudan Council of Churches and the Girlchild Education and Development Association are key program partners in Narus and Nimule, coordinating grants for girl’s education and women’s development. They serve as host for NCP Learning Tours.In Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, NCP has partners who support girl’s education, tailoring and microloan programs for women as well as reforestation. A fundamental aspect of NCP is its Learning Tours to these areas, to build relationships with native peoples as well as educational opportunities for tour participants.The Tropical Conservation Center in Nigeria partners with NCP to restore mangrove forests in the Niger Delta. Mike is a Seattle folksinger, songwriter, and resource leader with roots in the farms and apple orchards of rural, Ellisforde, Washington. He recently retired from a long career as a Family Nurse Practitioner and research clinician, focused on vaccine development for preventable diseases.Mike credits his mother for creating his interest in music. As a child she would sing lullabies for him. This has led him to singing to many groups of all ages for many years. He has traveled extensively while singing and working for peace and justice. This Christmas program shares the good works of Brethren Disaster Ministries and its' rebuild program of assisting survivors following devastating disasters. Childrens Disaster Services provides child care, allowing parents to respond to the pressing issues of the days following a disaster.Due to the pandemic, Brethren Disaster Ministries was forced to curtail some of its activities, but recently the Coastal North Carolina re-build site was reopened as a group of volunteers arrived the first part of November, with work scheduled through April 2022. Families who were devastated by Hurricane Florence in 2018, will still be assisted with home rebuilding.Since 1980, Children's Disaster Services has been meeting the needs of children by setting up child care centers in shelters and disaster assistance centers across the nation. EYN Brethren and Muslims, Survivors of Boko Haram Attacks, Share Stories BrethrenVoices 2021-10-24 | “Brethren Voices” host, Brent Carlson, interviews Carol Mason who in 2017 compiled stories of the EYN Brethren of Nigeria and Muslims who survived the violent attacks of the Boko Haram. A collection of their stories that were recorded by Carol Mason and supplemented by the photographs of Donna Parcell, became the book, “We Bear It in Tears,” published by Brethren Press. Each person was asked two questions, “Where were you when the Boko Haram attacked and how did it affect you?” The stories widely represent various affected areas, types of experiences, and populations. Together they are a significant effort at establishing a sustainable peace in Nigeria. This book attempts to share the experiences of those involved in the crisis of Northern Nigeria and gives voice to the women, men, and children who have suffered. By hearing their stories, we share their burden of tears. By seeing their faces, we witness an enduring faith and a commitment to nonviolence. These are not merely symbols of violence, but individuals with real stories, real families, and real pain. The Church of the Brethren, during the past 100 years has worked with many Nigerian communities establishing schools, hospitals and clean water systems. Carol Mason served as a missionary for 12 years, at a time, when programs that were begun by the Brethren, were turned over to Nigerians and adopted by the Nigerian government. 234th Recorded Annual Conference of the Church of the Brethren BrethrenVoices 2021-07-29 | The Church of the Brethren traces its roots back over 300 years to August of 1708. Schwarzenau, Germany was the site where 5 men and 3 women gathered at the Eder River for baptism. This act was considered illegal, since all had been baptized as infants, under a system of strong governmental control of the church. It was considered a capitol crime as there was low tolerance for religious diversity. This new group simply called themselves, 'brethren.'The Brethren grew in numbers and began emigrating to North America in 1719 under the leadership of Peter Becker. By 1740, most had left Germany, with many settling near Philadelphia.Brethren have been meeting annually, beginning in 1742 at Coventry, PA. The early conferences were often held at a family's farm, with thousands in attendance, traveling many miles by horse drawn wagons and buggies. The conferences started gathering every year, with the 4thAnnual Conference in 1777. Over the years, Brethren have dealt with many practical questions of how to live out their faith. They've worked through many public issues such as war, slavery, death penalty, abortion, and environmental issues, helping to foster and develop the unique perspective of the Church of the Brethren.Due to the pandemic, the 234thBrethren Annual Conference met virtually this year via ZOOM, with delegates and observers participating, from all over the country and world. These two species make long migrations. The caribou migrate 17-hundred miles past the homes of the Native Gwich'in, to the coastal plains of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. For the Humpbacks, it's a migration of 6,000 miles.According to Charlie Swaney, Arctic Village, Alaska, "the caribou make this journey to give birth to their young, where the vegetation helps the calves get stronger, faster." For the Humpbacks, the shallow waters within the islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai provide a safe place for the newborn calves, while consuming about 100 pounds of their mother's milk, daily. The village borders on the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The only way to reach this small community is by small plane, so, it's an experience to learn about the Native Gwich’in people who have lived off the land for thousands of years. -- The Porcupine Caribou Herd is the central feature in the Gwich’in way of life. They believe that they are "spiritually connected" with the caribou and that they were placed on Earth at about the same time. The Porcupine Caribou migrate, annually, on a journey of 1700 miles to the birthing grounds on the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Many other animals and birds also call this home for birthing, including polar bears, wolverine, black bears, moose, lynx, eagles, wolves, beavers and many migratory birds. Bill Jolliff admits that he really likes some of the old Gospel songs. "Sometimes I feel almost bad about how much I like them.
