On the night of July 26, 1942, a group of British special forces, known as L detachment (aka the Special Air Service), were on a mission to attack a strategic German airbase in Sidi Haneish, Egypt. Major David Stirling led the group intending to destroy as many aircraft as possible in order to disrupt the enemy supply lines deep behind the frontlines. Alongside him was Captain Paddy Mayne. The short and unexpected attack left the Germans stunned, making the British attack highly successful. After the attack, the British and French commandos had to find their way back to the hideout through the vast desert, trying to hide from the German aircraft patrolling the skies.

On 26th July 1943, a formation of B-17s was on a mission to strike factories in Hannover. Participating in the raid was Second Lieutenant John C. Morgan, from the 92nd Bomb Group. Morgan was a copilot inside the B-17F Ruthie II, which was severely hit by the Luftwaffe fighters upon reaching the enemy coast. After the pilot was injured, Morgan was forced to battle the now incoherent pilot for control of the plane. For his actions, Morgan earned the Medal of Honor.
One of the main sources we used was the excellent book by Daniel Simmons, With His Hand: A Story of the Incredible Experiences of B-17 Pilot John C. "Red" Morgan During World War II.

On January 19, 1991, during Operation Desert Storm, Captain Cesar “Rico” Rodriguez of the 58th Tactical Fighter Squadron flew an F-15C Eagle on a mission to protect a large coalition strike force. Accompanying him was his wingman, Captain Craig “Mole” Underhill. Despite the threat from Iraqi SAM sites, the F-15s pressed forward, buying precious time for the strikers.
Meanwhile, several brave Iraqi pilots took off in Soviet-made MiG-29 Fulcrums to intercept the American fighters. The ensuing dogfight between the Eagles and Fulcrums became one of the most iconic aerial battles of the Gulf War.

On June 24, 1944, Flight Lieutenant David Hornell was on a patrolling mission in his Catalina Canso A 9754 from the 162nd Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force. As the patrol was nearing its end, the crew spotted a German submarine, the U-1225. The Catalina turned towards it and started an attack run on the Germans, who replied with their anti-aircraft cannons. The Catalina managed to drop it’s depth charges but was badly damaged by the German defense. The Canadian crew were forced to ditch into the freezing waters. Stranded in the Norwegian Sea, the crew fought to try and survive the cold and high waves for more than 20 hours.

In the midnight hour between June 12 and June 13, 1944, a Lancaster Mk. X KB 726 from the 419th Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), was on a mission to take out rail yards in Cambrai, France. Aboard the Lancaster were close friends Andrew Mynarski and Pat Brophy. The Germans were prepared to counter the night raid with their powerful anti-aircraft cannons and heavy night fighters. A Junkers Ju-88 attacked turning the plane into an inferno. When ordered to bail, Mynarski spotted his friend trapped in the tail. Mynarski ignored the flames in the rear of the fuselage and tried to save his friend, Pat Brophy. This incredibly brave chapter of WW2 earned Mynarski the Victoria Cross.

On August 1st, 1944 pilot Major Charles Carpenter searched for a field suitable for the operations of the L-4 Grasshoppers near Avranches, France. He stumbled upon a friendly unit pinned by enemy fire in front of a town they had to liberate. The Mad Major commandeered a Sherman tank and led an attack on the town. Several weeks later, during the Battle of Arracourt, he took out several Panthers and armoured vehicles in his Grasshopper nicknamed "Rosie the Rocketer", equipped with six under wing bazooka rockets. The engagement made Carpenter a legend, and he was given the nickname Bazooka Charlie.
One of the main sources we used for the film is the excellent book Bazooka Charlie: The Unbelievable Story of Major Charles Carpenter and Rosie the Rocketer, written by James P. Busha and Carol Apacki.

December 18, 1944 and the Battle of the Bulge enters its third day. It's Germany's chance to go on the offensive. Using subterfuge and heavy armor. The roads of Belgium tremble under the weight of King Tiger tanks as Joachim Peiper and his troops push toward Stavelot. His mission is to break through Allied lines and turn the tide of history at any cost. With thirsty 70-ton steel monsters at his command what can stop him?

On February 28, 1994, a group of six Serbian J-21 Jastreb attack aircraft led by pilot Ranko Vukmirovic, were on a mission to take out a military factory in Novi Travnik during the Bosnian War. Some 50 miles away a pair of two American F-16Cs piloted by Captain Robert Wright and Captain Scott O'Grady from 526th Fighter Squadron supported the no-fly zone over Bosnia as part of Operation Deny Flight. Although aware of the F-16 presence and possible consequences, Serbian pilots continued their bombing run. The Americans engaged the Jastrebs, leading to the first NATO combat engagement in its history.

On November 29th, 1943, a large group of B-17 Flying Fortresses were on a mission to take out strategic targets in the industrial city of Bremen, Germany. Inside a B-17F from the 96th Bomb Group named Rikki Tikki Tavi, was Staff Sergeant Eugene Moran. As a tail gunner, Moran was in the thick of the fight against the swarm of enemy fighters. When the Rikki Tikki Tavi experienced a malfunction and slid back from the formation the German's swarmed in with Bf 109s and FW190s. The fortress was eventually cut into two pieces, with Moran still inside the tail. Some of the research for this film was found in the great book Tailspin by John Armbruster. To find out more you should definitely get a copy.

On January 3rd, 1943 a group of 72 B-17 Flying Fortresses were on a bombing mission in occupied France. Their target was a heavily fortified German U-boat base at St. Nazaire, an important strategic location for the Kriegsmarine during the Battle of the Atlantic. Inside a B-17 named Snap! Crackle! Pop! was 24-year-old Staff Sergeant Alan Magee in the position of ball turret gunner. Magee was on his seventh and last combat mission during which he was sucked out of the B-17 at an altitude of 20,000 feet without a parachute!

It's November 20th, 1944 and Lieutenant Sekio Nishina is at the helm of a new secret weapon. The Kaiten. It's a small and fast submersible built around a torpedo. But there's a catch. It's a one-way mission. Nishina and 3 other 'underwater Kamikaze' pilots closed in on the lagoon entrance of Ulithi atoll which serves as one of the biggest forward anchorages of the US Navy. These desperate men are trying to stop the US advance towards the Japanese home islands. Kaiten means 'Turning the Heaven'. Will the sacrifice of best and brightest young Kaiten pilots turn the will of Heaven and change fate of Empire of Japan?

On May 6th, 1944 destroyer escort USS Buckley was steaming at full speed to fight a German U-66 submarine. An American patrol plane found her by radar and sent coordinates to the US Navy hunter-killer group. The USS Buckley found the submarine and engaged it in combat. A hard battle ensued where the submarine was rammed and the fight spilled into hand-to-hand combat on the American ship. In this fight captain of the USS Buckley was forced to issue a command not heard in the US Navy for decades. "Stand by to repel boarders!"

June 5, 1944. In the skies over Normandy, Jake McNiece, a demolition expert in the US 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, flies in on his first combat mission with his men. Painted in Choctaw battle paint and sporting a mohawk he's already a legend in the soldiers' barracks and a headache for the officers. He's flying in the night before D-Day and his target is a strategic bridge behind enemy lines. Nothing goes to plan, but 'McNasty' is not going to let a plan get in the way of a good fight.

It’s June 6th, 1944 D-Day. At Pointe du Hoc the Rangers need to scale the cliffs and capture or disable the guns. Aside from the forces that are to fight at the five major landing zones, many smaller groups do their duty all over Normandy. The Rangers task is crucial for reducing the losses at Omaha and Utah beaches. Pointe du Hoc was a strategic battery that, if left intact, could wreak havoc on the Allied forces. The success of their mission hinges on a daring, swift, and unorthodox move. But no plan survives first contact with the enemy…

The birth of the moniker the Bloody 100th came about on October 10th 1943. It was the third day of daily bombing raids of US forces against German targets. The 100th Bomb Group led by Major John Eagan took off and assembled into formation. The last plane in the formation was the most vulnerable and known as "tail-end Charlie". On this mission that misfortune fell to a plane called the Royal Flush. It was piloted by young officer Lieutenant Robert Rosenthal. 13 planes took off and only one would return. How could the most vulnerable of the planes in the worst position make it's way home on that day?

It's August 1943 and future president, John F. Kennedy is the Commander of the US patrol torpedo boat PT-109. He was participating in a hunt for the famous "Tokyo Express" - Japanese destroyers operating in the Solomon Islands that carried supplies to the island garrisons during the cover of night. While on this mission his boat was rammed by a Japanese destroyer. As his boat was torn apart he managed to save the majority of his crew and make his way home. Several months later Kennedy and his men risked their lives again, going to the rescue of marines trapped on Choiseul Island.

On 31 January 1943, 1st Lieutenant Jefferson J. DeBlanc led a group of F4F Wildcats over the Japanese-held Kolombangara island. The group was on an escort mission for a strike force of 12 Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers sent to attack Japanese shipping. DeBlanc reported that he had a serious fuel leak, and soon he and his wingman, Sgt. Jim Feliton had to leave the group and then to push into the battle against superior enemy forces: 2 American Wildcats vs 10 Nakajima Oscars. Forced to ditch, DeBlanc had to face terrors from the depths of the ocean and from the jungle.

In the first days of the war, Captain Władysław Raginis commanded a defense operation on the outskirts of the small Polish town Wizna. He and his unit of 720 Polish soldiers faced the impossible task of stopping a vastly superior German force: 42,000 men, 450 tanks, 108 150mm howitzers and 58 lighter guns. On the 4th day of the battle the defenders were running out of ammunition. The Poles had no other option but to surrender. The event that went down in history as the Polish Thermopylae would become a remarkable act of heroism and courage of the Polish troops when they fought odds of more than 40:1.

On December 13th, 1939, the German cruiser Admiral Graf Spee arrived at the estuary of the River Plate with the aim of hunting down British merchant ships. However, these plans were doomed to fail as the ship became the target of a British squadron under the command of Commodore Henry Harwood. The lone German ship was better armed and armored than any of the British cruisers, but the squadron had the advantage of numbers: 3 vs 1. Knowing that they would be badly damaged, the British forces, still commenced their attack. Who would win and why did the Germans end up scuttling the Graf Spee?

May 8, 1942, Battle of the Coral Sea. Lieutenant Stanley "Swede" Vejtasa from Scouting Squadron FIVE (VS-5) in an SBD Dauntless, is in patrol over the aircraft carrier U.S.S. YORKTOWN (CV-5). Fate has a surprise for Vejtasa and his rear gunner, Radioman 3rd Class Frank B Wood, as they are forced to face off in battle against the deadly Zero. Not one, but 3 of them. The chances of the relatively slow bomber surviving the clash are extremely slim. There can only be one winner in this one-sided battle, but despite the odds, can the Dauntless prevail?

February 1991, the Gulf War. Republican Guard units defend the flank of the Iraqi army occupying Kuwait. The Battle of 73 Easting was named after a north-south coordinate line (an "Easting", measured in kilometers) on military maps. The US Army’s Eagle troop, consisting of M1 Abrams and Bradley Fighting vehicles engaged and destroyed a significant number of Iraqi Republican Guard tanks and Armoured vehicles. This was to be the last major tank battle of the 20th century. The Iraqis were using Soviet designed equipment and the battle's lopsided outcome in favor of the United States was to be a significant milestone in proving US tactics and technology in Armored Warfare.

Download World of Warships today wo.ws/3MFfWF9 and this December World of Warships will be releasing 12 new ships to their massive collection with multiple ship classes to choose from!
It's April 16, 1945, the Battle of Okinawa. The destroyer USS Laffey is conducting radar patrol so she's the closest ship to the expected enemy attacks. Its mission is to alert the US forces to the arrival of Japanese aircraft. But what the crew doesn't know is that on this day they will have to endure the toughest challenge of their lives - during 90 minutes 22 Japanese planes will attack the USS Laffey trying to bomb, strafe and directly collide with her. The chances of survival are slim to none. How could the crew and the ship survive one of the fiercest battles of the war?

One of the most famous Tiger battles took place on July 8th 1943 during the Battle of Kursk when supposedly a lone Tiger under the command of Franz Staudegger destroyed 22 T-34s. The Soviet's fielded a total force of 50 to 60 Russian tanks. How could 1 tiger hold against that many tanks? This episode is still hotly debated. What really happened there? We use both German and Soviet sources to shine some light on the incident and show you both sides of the story in this film.
For the German side we used internet articles “Panzer Aces Wittmann and Staudegger at Kursk” and “Revised footnote on Staudegger” by Christopher A. Lawrence, and also “Franz Staudegger – German Tiger Ace in the Battle of Kursk” by Evan Pinter.
For the Soviet side we looked through archive documents in Russian, scans of which can be found on the site of TsAMO, “Memory of People” page. First one is ”Excerpt from the War Diary of 26th Tank Brigade from June 23rd to July 6th of 1943”, second - "Combat Directive for units of 2nd Tank Corps for July 7th - July 8th 1943”, and third - "After-action report of 2nd Tank Corps for July 1943”.

Outnumbered and against all odds, five Thai Fighter Pilots went into battle against sixteen superior American planes. Despite their bravery and tenacity, it was to be a one-sided combat, with the Thai's being taken down one by one. Yet, in the desperate fight they managed to shoot down one of the Americans. The plane of Henry Minco, the fallen pilot, was found 75 years later by a team that included RTAF Air Chief Marshall Sakpinit Promthep, USAF Major Daniel Jackson, and Mr. Hak Hakanson. In January 2024 the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency is due to excavate the site in the hope of finding and repatriating Minco's remains. This incredible story was brought to us by Major Jackson who reached out to the channel. Major Jackson is a Combat Aviation Advisor with the US Air Force Special Operations Command and author of Fallen Tigers: The Fate of America’s Missing Airmen in China During World War II.

It's April 12th, 1945, and Nine Mitsubishi G4M Betty bombers and their escort of A6M Zero fighters soar over the East China Sea. In the leading bomber, Lieutenant Saburo Dohi puts on his oxygen mask and lies back on his makeshift cot, breathing deeply. His mind is focused on one thing: the new secret weapon held in the bowels of the Betty, a weapon the Japanese hope will change the course of the war. The Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka was the chariot of the Thunder Gods. Volunteer pilots who would give everything for Japan. We try to lift the veil on the life of these young pilots. To try and understand their training and their friendships and to explore why they would strive to make the ultimate sacrifice. To find out more on the Thunder Gods check out the great book by Dan King, 'Blossoms From the Sky' which was one of the sources we used for this video. The Ohka was used successfully by Saburo Dohi when he hit the destroyer Mannert L. Abele causing it to split in half and subsequently sink.

It’s just past midnight on Friday November 13th, 1942. The opening of the battle of Guadalcanal. On board the USS San Francisco is Rear Admiral Daniel Judson Callaghan. The fleet of 13 ships was all that stand between the strategically vital Henderson Field on Guadalcanal and an incoming Japanese fleet. The fleet of 13 ships were all that were left battle ready after engagements with the Japanese, and now the Japanese are coming for Guadalcanal. On board the IJN Hiei is Admiral Hiroaki Abe. The event is marked by a series of mistakes in command on both sides leading to confusion and friendly fire. The men fought with bravery and commitment but at a terrible price.

In December 1941 Winston Churchill received a phone call telling him that the HMS Prince of Wales and the HMS Repulse had both been sunk by the Japanese by aircraft.
He said “In all the war I never received a more direct shock. The reader of these pages will realise how many efforts, hopes, and plans foundered with these two ships. As I turned over and twisted in bed the full horror of the news sank in upon me. There were no British or American capital ships in the Indian Ocean or the Pacific except the American survivors of Pearl Harbour, who were hastening back to California. Over all this vast expanse of waters Japan was supreme, and we everywhere were weak and naked.”
The HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales were British Royal Navy warships that were sunk on December 10, 1941. The two ships were part of a naval force known as Force Z, which was dispatched to the South China Sea to deter the Japanese from Malaya and Singapore.
The ships were attacked by Japanese planes off the coast of Kuantan, in British Malaya.
The two capital ships, HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales were sunk after being hit by multiple torpedoes and bombs, dealing terrible blow to British naval power in the region.
Captain Leach and Admiral Phillips went down with the HMS Prince of Wales. Sadly, the wrecks have recently been in the news for being plundered for their scrap metal by Chinese dredgers.
