You're probably thinking, "but Barrett, they wouldn't deny you care, or a specific treatment?!" You my friend would be wrong. The insurance company has every incentive to deny your care and very few to approve it. It's a sad truth in America's health care system. It's sad that often when patients are at their lowest, their health insurance would add unnecessary stress by denying patients the care their doctors prescribe for them. But it happens every day. This is an overview of my experience with this from the point of getting sick in September of 2019 to diagnosis in March of 2020. My hope is that these videos can be informative to others who are seeking information about Crohn's and the treatments available to them. Be prepared, I tell it like it is, so these videos will go into pretty graphic detail about the "butt stuff."Since January I had two EUAs (Exam Under Anesthesia) that resulted in one partial fistulotomy and two setons (drains) being placed. Two colonoscopies and two MRIs. I began Remicade infusions in mid-March, I incorrectly state in the video my start date for Remicade, apologies it's been a year. I'm also currently on Azathioprine an oral immune suppressant (chemo). I have 9 additional videos planned for this series but likely will add to that as this journey continues. I always advise that Crohnies have their plan in place. Let your flight attendant know that you have IBD, are experiencing flare symptoms and might need to access the bathroom quickly. Pantless Weigh In, Self Doubt & Finding My Why | #crohnswarrior #chronicillnesslife Barrett Laurie 2024-04-16 | Man you haven't lived until you have weighed in for the world and realized you take your pants off before stepping on the scale as a habit...with a camera rolling. Add it to the many things that makes me weird! That little embarrassing self discovery aside this week features my first weigh in since starting phentermine to get my weight under control. To say I was shocked by the amount of weight I lost in one week is an understatement. I'm thrilled with the progress so far. The meat of this week's vlog though isn't really about the weight loss, so much as it is about the feelings of self doubt that creeped up in me once I realized I was going to be weighing myself for the world to see. Reflecting on my past I quickly realized the last time I felt this level of self doubt was around the time of my diagnosis with Crohn's disease. Back in the early days of my diagnosis I was susceptible to all sorts of medical misinformation because I was too new to know what I didn't know. On my most recent episode of Gut Instinct, my podcast all about living and thriving with a chronic illness, my dear friend @AuthorMorganLee talked about her journey with Crohn's disease. During that discussion Morgan shared a point in her Crohn's story, she stopped taking her meds due to a form of medical misinformation that stems from extreme religious beliefs. Morgan has been so open about her Crohn's disease, neurodivergence and journey to acceptance I had to have her on the podcast to chat. We'll discuss her Crohn's story and the intersectionality of Crohn's and neurodivergence. If you're new here my Crohn's story began in 2020, when my life changed forever after properly diagnosed with Crohn's disease. I was unprepared for how my life would change and evolve. Back then I couldn't have possibly been ready for the myriad of different ways I would adjust my everyday life to accommodate living with a chronic illness. From anal fistulas, to flaming diarrhea, to nausea, to extreme weight fluctuations, to malnourishment thanks to vitamin malabsorption, to blood in stool, inflammation, liver disease and everything in between this ride has been wild. A magical drug called Remicade, prescribed by my incredible GI Dr. Deepak, saved my life. But the road to get the medicine I needed, at the dose and rate I needed it has been a never ending battle. Because health care in America sucks a big toe! This podcast series will focus on Crohn's disease, but living with a disability more broadly. I will share my story, the ups and downs, as well as the impact of the people in my life through first hand interviews. I will also be inviting on other Crohnies to share their story with the disease and their road to remission. I will also invite on those living with a disability (whether in the IBD family or not) to talk about the unique challenges we face. Your Crohn's always gets bad when I'm having a party!" or "Are you sure you don't feel well, or is that just an excuse? Seems to conveniently happen when we're supposed to hang out!" or "Not again. I thought you found a treatment that was working for you? In the Crohn's commercials people seem to be able to go to things once they start treatment. It's okay to just say you don't want to come, you don't have to use Crohn's as an excuse."I got that last one this week. Let's do better. We can all do better. As we settle back into life at home, it makes me grateful for my beautiful family. This week I focus on walking away from some unhealthy work expectations. After working round the clock 7 days a week for weeks my body started to tell me it was going to revolt. When the choice is my health or my job that is an easy choice. This vlog is basically a mood. The moment that I decided, even though I hear the voices in my head telling me I need to work twice as hard as able bodied folk to get ahead, it ain't true. It's a lie. Exaggerating my disability or faking symptoms...not today Satan. #crohnsdisease Barrett Laurie 2024-02-27 | One of the ugliest things about living with a disability is how often we are told we are "overreacting," "exaggerating" or worse of all "faking" our symptoms. Oh hell no! I had no idea how prevalent this was until it started happening to me. And sometimes from people we love and trust. The ignorance is astounding. I wanted to get his perspective on what it is like to live with someone suffering from a chronic illness. From the golden handcuffs of health insurance, to watching your partner struggle while remaining positive and how he deals with anxiety when I'm not able to focus on his needs due to being in flare. It's easy to forget those we love are in the trenches with us and I wanted to take a minute to have that discussion with him, hoping it might help someone else feel more secure opening up to their partner about chronic illness and the impact it has on the relationship. Be gentle y'all. He's shy! In 2020, my life changed forever when I was properly diagnosed with Crohn's disease. I was unprepared for how my life would change and evolve. Back then I couldn't have possibly been ready for the myriad of different ways I would adjust my everyday life to accommodate living with a chronic illness. From anal fistulas, to flaming diarrhea, to nausea, to extreme weight fluctuations, to malnourishment thanks to vitamin malabsorption, to blood in stool, inflammation, liver disease and everything in between this ride has been wild. A magical drug called Remicade, prescribed by my incredible GI Dr. Deepak, saved my life. But the road to get the medicine I needed, at the dose and rate I needed it has been a never ending battle. Because health care in America sucks a big toe! This podcast series will focus on Crohn's disease, but living with a disability more broadly. I will share my story, the ups and downs, as well as the impact of the people in my life through first hand interviews. I will also be inviting on other Crohnies to share their story with the disease and their road to remission. I will also invite on those living with a disability (whether in the IBD family or not) to talk about the unique challenges we face. It still surprises me the ingrained bias towards disabilities that I was carrying until I had to fight that dissonance within myself.Being disabled isn't a walk in the park but it can be especially scary if you have an invisible disability. Mostly because we never know the terrain. Will we have people who ask rude and invasive questions? Or will self awareness and mutual respect win the day?Getting to a place of acceptance has brought me peace. Gut Instincts Ep 1: My Crohns Diagnosis | Crohns & Disability Podcast | #CrohnsWarrior Barrett Laurie 2024-01-29 | In 2020, my life changed forever when I was properly diagnosed with Crohn's disease. I was unprepared for how my life would change and evolve. Back then I couldn't have possibly been ready for the myriad of different ways I would adjust my everyday life to accommodate living with a chronic illness. From anal fistulas, to flaming diarrhea, to nausea, to extreme weight fluctuations, to malnourishment thanks to vitamin malabsorption, to blood in stool, inflammation, liver disease and everything in between this ride has been wild. A magical drug called Remicade, prescribed by my incredible GI Dr. Deepak, saved my life. But the road to get the medicine I needed, at the dose and rate I needed it has been a never ending battle. Because health care in America sucks a big toe! This podcast series will focus on Crohn's disease, but living with a disability more broadly. I will share my story, the ups and downs, as well as the impact of the people in my life through first hand interviews. I will also be inviting on other Crohnies to share their story with the disease and their road to remission. I will also invite on those living with a disability (whether in the IBD family or not) to talk about the unique challenges we face. Is never a question you should ask during a gap in treatment due to preauthorization. Because this year the answer to that has been one of the most painful experiences of my life...and I've dealt with anal fistulas!Preauthorization is something insurance companies do at the beginning of every year to determine whether or not a treatment plan, like Remicade (infliximab) infusions in my case, or medical procedure is medically necessary. It is an awful time of year for any person struggling with chronic illness, but one we can get through together. Buckle up for one of my "story time" talks dripping with sarcasm and my dark humor.
