He was a member of the 82nd Airborne and served as an infantryman during WW2 as a paratrooper and machine gunner from 1942 - 1945. His parents came to America from Italy, but Louie was born and raised here in Elkhart (Indiana). Elkhart, Indiana Flags From the Heart 2017 LarryInBristol 2017-05-29 | Each year on Memorial Day our town has a display of flags in the downtown city park. “Flags From the Heart” allows flag dedications for those who have served in our nation’s armed services as well as for those who died while serving our country. This year, 2017, there were over 200 flags flown. I always sponsor a flag for my second great uncle, Pvt Andrew Longley, who was killed during the American Civil War. Next year I will add more flags for Johann Michael App, Friederich App, and Mathias App (a father and his two sons) all of whom served in the American Revolutionary War. Johann Michael App was my 5th great grandfather who came to this country in 1752 from Germany. This year the park’s “sentinel” is a 100% brass sculpture nearly 40 feet tall of “American Gothic”. From Davos, Switzerland we took the Parsenn funicular up to its first section stop at Höhenweg where we began our hike. We passed by Schiahorn and on to Strelapass where Markus App operates the Strela-Pass restaurant. After a light lunch we hiked back down to Pius’ Schatzalp. Our highest elevation was about 7,700 feet (2,353 meters), and total hike time was about 5 hours including our stop at the restaurant.

Putnam served in Europe from early 1944 through late 1945 in the US Army Air Force, 832nd Bombardier Squadron, 486th Bombardier Group. He flew 31 missions over France and Germany as a B17 (Model G) as a radio operator.
