Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi || Reading Vlog & Book Review || Historical Fiction, No Spoilers Tomes And Travel 2020-05-30 | Homegoing (2016) is a powerful piece of historical fiction spanning three hundred years of slavery through seven generations, starting with two half sisters in eighteenth-century Ghana whose destinies are vastly different. Effia marries a British slave trader called James Collins and lives a comfortable life in the luxurious Cape Coast Castle, while Esi is imprisoned in cramped, squalid conditions in the castle's dungeon before being sold with thousands of others into the slave trade and shipped off to work on plantations in America, where her children and grandchildren will be raised.This is the only the second ever "reading vlog" that I've done on this channel, so please give me your honest feedback. I'm personally finding it quite fun to spontaneously film a couple of minutes each day and then put everything together at the end, but if you prefer the more traditional "sit down" book review videos that I used to do before, then please let me know. The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead || Reading Vlog & Book Review || No Spoilers Tomes And Travel 2020-05-23 | The Underground Railroad (2016) is an incredibly powerful piece of historical fiction by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Colson Whitehead which deals with slavery on cotton plantations and the slaves' desire to escape their misery via something known as the 'Underground Railroad' – a historical network of secret routes which was used by African-American "runaways" to escape from slave states to free states where slavery was illegal, assisted by abolitionists and others who were sympathetic to their cause. It's understandably a difficult, and often disturbing, read due to the subject matter, but very eye-opening and educational, so it's definitely worth reading if you're in the right mindset. This is the first "reading vlog" I've ever done on this channel, so please give me your honest feedback. I personally found it quite fun to spontaneously film a couple of minutes each day and then put the video together at the end, but if you prefer the more traditional "sit down" book review videos, then please let me know. September Book Haul & TBR (Historical Fiction Theme) Tomes And Travel 2019-09-01 | After doing my updated bookshelf tour earlier this month and realising that I've read about 90% of the books I own, I feel like I'm in the position to buy new books again... I'm going to try and do book hauls on a monthly basis as I read and review the books, rather than buying loads all in one go. Obviously this is a bit of an experiment and I'll have to see how it goes - especially because I'm quite busy at the moment and have just started a full-time job. Four years ago I was accepted into Durham University to study a BA (Bachelor of Arts) in Modern Languages and Cultures, specialising in French for the first two years and Spanish for the entire four years. What Am I Writing About for my Dissertation? | Final Year Modern Languages at Durham University Tomes And Travel 2018-09-04 | At the beginning of October, I'm going back to Durham University to complete the final year of my Modern Languages and Cultures degree. I have to write a 12,000-word dissertation on something related to the Spanish-speaking world. I've chosen to write on literature by the Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez, focusing on magical realism, spatiality and power. In particular, my attitude towards classic books is different to what it used to be. I now realise that classics are not just something of the past; they're also something of the present.
