Important notes about barn owls and the cameras: Our research group from the Shamir Research Institute and University of Haifa monitors around 200 nest boxes hosting 30-60 pairs of wild owls annually. We do not interfere with the breeding process but observe them closely. On average, barn owl pairs fledge 5 young (1-11 range), with earlier pairs more successful. Cameras are added before egg-laying or after all nestlings have hatched to minimize disturbance. These cameras represent a small percentage of the pairs we monitor. They are added for research purposes and to allow people to observe owls without disturbing them. Some pairs may fail due to food shortages, which is natural. Barn owls do not clean their nests, which may appear messy, but this is how they have evolved. Our nest boxes are cleaned once a year, making them cleaner than natural sites. Over-cleaning can cause pairs to abandon nests and remove beneficial insects. You can watch a lecture by Dr. Motti Charter for more information:: youtube.com/watch?v=3Lw2hgQefgc.

Barn Owl 2022 This barn owl female acted like she was incubating for months but never laid eggs. Her mate fed her and would mate with her frequently. Two orphaned barn owls were brought to the Wildlife Hospital and need a home. In order to give the nestlings a home , we added two eggs on June 5, 2022 to the box the female started to incubate them. The following night we added two nestlings. The pair accepted them but unfortunately only brooded and did not feed. One nestling died fast while the other was taken out after less than a day to save it.

These videos are meant to document the lives of wild barn owls in order that we can learn more for both educational & research purposes and serve as an aid for the species conservation effort. We do not set up/ stage or intervene. All the videos are documenting wild barn owls.
Important notes about barn owls and these cams: All these nest boxes have been monitored as part of our research group’s scientific activities from the Shamir Research Institute and University of Haifa in Israel. All the owls/birds are wild and are free to come and go. We monitor around 200 nest boxes/ 30-60 pairs a year but do not interfere in the owls breeding. In general barn owl pair fledged on average 5 fledglings per pair (range 1- 11 fledglings) but their breeding success decrease in the breeding season with earlier pairs more successful than later pairs. We add cameras either before the pair lay eggs or only have all the nestlings hatched in order to not disturb the owls. So these CAMs are in fact a very small percentage of the overall pairs we monitor. We added the cams as part of own research to learn more about them but also in order that people could observe owls lives without disturbing them. Some later pairs sometimes fail do to a lack of food. This may be hard to observe but this is nature and this is how the barn owls have evolved. You can watch a lecture to given by Dr. Motti Charter to learn more: youtube.com/watch?v=3Lw2hgQefgc. Some people comment about cleanliness of barn owls nest due to YouTube cleaning nests out a lot. Barn Owls do not have any sense of smell and brings dead animals, some of them later rot and also regurgitates owl pellets inside the nests. Owls do not clean their nests and natural nest sites stay like this until they either fall a part or fill up. We do clean our nest once a year, so in fact our nest boxes are cleaner than natural ones. Cleaning boxes too much can cause pairs to abandon and also takes aware beneficial insects that help keep the boxes clean.
We are unsure if the same adults breed because the owls are not banded.

Important notes about barn owls and these cams: All these nest boxes have been monitored as part of our research group’s scientific activities from the Shamir Research Institute and the University of Haifa in Israel. All the owls/birds are wild and are free to come and go. We monitor around 200 nest boxes/ 30-60 pairs a year but do not interfere in the owls breeding. In general, barn owl pair fledged on average 5 fledglings per pair (range 1- 11 fledglings) but their breeding success decreased in the breeding season with earlier pairs more successful than later pairs. We add cameras either before the pair lay eggs or only have all the nestlings hatched in order to not disturb the owls. So these CAMs are a tiny percentage of the overall pairs we monitor. We added the cams as part of own research to learn more about them but also in order that people could observe owls' lives without disturbing them. Some later pairs sometimes fail due to a lack of food. This may be hard to observe but this is nature and this is how barn owls have evolved. Owls do not clean their nests, and natural nest sites stay like this until they either fall apart or fill up. We do clean our nest once a year, so in fact our nest boxes are cleaner than natural ones. Cleaning boxes too much can cause pairs to abandon and also takes awareness of beneficial insects that help keep the boxes clean.
The Cam was added by the Charter Group of Wildlife Ecology (The Shamir Research Institute and the Department of Geography and Environmental Science of the University of Haifa).

We love nature and want to share some of the beautiful wildlife in Israel.
Motti Charter for more information: youtube.com/watch?v=3Lw2hgQefgc.

The barn owl cam is part of a citizen science study led by the GAIA Project, WBAIS, and the Charter Group of Wildlife Ecology (The Shamir Research Institute and the Department of Geography and Environmental Science of the University of Haifa).
These videos are meant to document the lives of wild barn owls in order that we can learn more for both educational & research purposes and serve as an aid for the species conservation effort. We do not set up/ stage or intervene. All the videos are documenting wild barn owls.
Important notes about barn owls and these cams: All these nest boxes have been monitored as part of our research group’s scientific activities from the Shamir Research Institue and University of Haifa in Israel.

Live from one of Israel’s most important remote wildlife sites, the Hula Nature Reserve המצלמה מוקמה בשמורת החולה, של רשות הטבע והגנים, במקום בו אין כניסה For the first ever people will be able to observe wildlife in one of Israel’s most important sites, the Hula Nature (Israel Nature and Parks Authority). The Hula nature reserve is a special combination of lake and swamps and is on the most important wetlands for wildlife in the Middle East. The reserve is remnant of the Hula Swamps that were dried up in the 1950’s. The reserve is known as an important stop over site for birds such as Eurasian cranes and Great white pelicans. There are also many mammals such as golden jackals, wild boar, Egyptian mongoose and more that frequent the reserve daily. The camera was added and maintained by the Charter Group of Wildlife Ecology (The Shamir Research Institute and the Department of Geography and Environmental Science of the University of Haifa) and funded by a private donor. The camera was placed in full cooperation with Israel Nature and Parks Authority.

Cleaning too often can cause pairs to abandon nests and remove beneficial insects. ____________________________________________ Barn Owls 2024 2nd clutch Egg 1 =March 18, 2024 buried by nestlings Egg 2 =March 20, 2024 buried by nestlings Egg 3 =March 22, 2024 buried by nestlings (March 24, 11:52:43) Egg 4 = March 24, 2024 buried by nestlings (March 26, 9:37) Egg 5 = March 26, 2024 Egg 6 = March 28, 2024 Egg 7 = March 30, 2024 Egg 8 = April 1, 2024 Egg 9 = April 3, 2024 Egg 10 = April 5, 2024 Egg 11 = April 7, 2024 Egg 12 = April 9, 2024 Egg 13 = April 12, 2024 Egg 14 = April 14, 2024 Hatching: Nest 1: April 26, 2024 Nest 2: April 29, 2024 Nest 3: April 30, 2024 Nest 4: May 2, 2024 (Died on May 16) Nest 5: May 4, 2024 (Died on May 15) Nest 6: May 7, 2024 (Died on May 14)

We love nature and want to share some of the beautiful wildlife in Israel.
Motti Charter for more information: youtube.com/watch?v=3Lw2hgQefgc.

Barn owls In response to suggestions which have been occasionally posted in the chat box, we would like to clarify that at the Charter Group of Wildlife Ecology, we use nest boxes (including this one) large enough to fledge very large broods - the largest successfully raised brood consisted of 11 barn owl fledglings.

The Israel Nature and Parks Authority (INPA) and the Charter Group of Wildlife Ecology (comprising the Shamir Research Institute and the University of Haifa) cordially invite you to observe a live 24/7 webcam of a very special Griffon Vulture nest, which is home to a disabled vulture pair. The live camera is part of the ongoing monitoring and research efforts aimed at restoring locally-endangered vulture populations in Israel.
The vulture couple was born in the early 2000s in the Gamla Nature Reserve but suffered from rickets, a bone disease that weakens bones and causes deformities. Despite their handicap, the vulture pair bonded and began laying eggs. They were subsequently included in the "Opening Wing" vulture conservation project, which is a joint effort led by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, the Israel Electric Company, and the Israel Society for the Protection of Nature, aimed at increasing vulture populations. The INPA constructed a nest in a specially-designed structure that is accessible for birds with disabilities, allowing the parents to easily climb up to the location. The camera was installed and maintained by the Charter Group of Wildlife Ecology (comprising the Shamir Research Institute and the Department of Geography and Environmental Science of the University of Haifa) with funding from a private donor.
