Composed in 11/8 time and heavily featuring orchestral elements, Battle on the Blackened Tide is thoroughly unique for a DOOM track. I can't think of a single other song in the DOOM portfolio that is as different. The use of a blade of grass to simulate demonic screams is so gnarly and continues the trend of DOOM tracks using unconventional instruments. I adore the Slayer motif. It reminds me a lot of Alexandre Desplat's scores for Harry Potter. It's quickly becoming one of my favourite tracks because of it's novelty. When I first heard that breakdown at the end, the stank face I was making was gargantuan. To maintain the ups and downs of the OST arrangement, I haven't strayed too far from it, occasionally injecting missing stems where applicable. The extra 3 minutes of music definitely helps build a complete listening experience.Because you spend the entirety of Hell's Core with the spear, I felt as though the combat suite should be titled more appropriately. The different textures and tones make it difficult to string together in a logical manner, but I got there eventually. If Into the Void is Finishing Move's equivalent to BFG Division, then this is their The Only Thing They Fear Is You. I deliberately front-loaded the song with the main chorus so that the outro can stand on its own, much like TOTTFIY. I think it worked out rather well.Because of the sheer length of this piece and how there are distinct sections, I personally like to view it as movements of a classical piece. The first movement establishes the key motifs, the second movement pulls apart and corrupts those ideas, and the third movement brings them back with more emotion. Since the concept art of Osseus was revealed, I was itching to find what it's combat suite sounded like. I wouldn't have to wait long, as the piece that features in the Revelations trailer was the very suite I was looking for. I'm absolutely floored by the entire soundtrack though. It's such a beautiful homage to DOOM, with a Classic DOOM callback in just about every track. Going into Revelations, I hypothesised that Finishing Move would use more Classic references, but I'm just shocked by how many there are!The Classic reference hidden in this track is the intermission piece from DOOM (1993), which I find to be an interesting callback indeed. Someone made the comparison that Valley of Bone is reminiscent of Andrew Hulshult's Blood Swamps, which in turn actually features the same callback to the aforementioned intermission piece. How cool is that!Apologies for not having an animated background. I haven't actually gotten up to Osseus yet. Whoops! More to come very soon. I'm thinking the Proving Grounds combat next. Previous iterations are coming up on a year old now and it's time for a much needed makeover. While many were updated in the compilation video I posted a little while ago, they've since been tweaked further. They also didn't get a standalone video release. That changes with my updated remix for Blood Spill, which I've titled Ravenous Hatred.I reached out to Kruge - one of the best editors I know - to see if he was interested in cutting together a music video for this track because these songs are deserving of a much better presentation. He graciously accepted my offer and I couldn't be more grateful. His work on this piece is astonishing and beautifully captures the back-and-forth struggle between Doomguy and Ahzrak. The bridge and outro are a perfect encapsulation of the story. I couldn't be more pleased with his work. Please check out his channel if you haven't already. To celebrate spooky day, this is my treat to you. If Finishing Move weren't constrained by contracted minutes, I can imagine this is what the OST could have sounded like. The problem I kept running into was how to implement OST material. The OST is mixed differently from the game files, so trying to balance the audio perfectly was a major hassle, to a point where I just said "stuff it" and mostly used the game files. There is one OST stem in the entire song.Hellspawn Rift doesn't really have a chorus per se, which gave me a rather unique challenge. Instead of repeating the opening heavy stem like I usually would, I decided that I should double down on that really groovy, "First-Person-Shooter-by-Clint-Mansell-esque" riff. Much like my other edits, I didn’t mean for this to be the same duration as another song, but I just had to include that ambient outro that I put together. The section toward the middle was the first part I mixed and I felt like it had to be included in its entirety, as it builds back up to the chorus wonderfully.I really wanted to title this track “Doomguy & His Dragon”, but it just didn’t fit. Blood Red utilises Bishop Kreed’s theme (heard notably in Invasion and adapted for Wither & Writhe, as well as some cutscenes here and there) and plays in a level where something of religious significance to the Sentinels is corrupted by Hell. It's just the heavy stems and the unmixed stems (which I prefer not to use); no light combat or ambience to thread each section together. I think this is because What Lies Below was first developed as the boss track for The Old One. However, when the levels were split up last minute, the id Software devs suddenly needed music for the latter half of The Cosmic Realm because four levels with Into the Void as the main suite might not have been exciting enough. As a result, What Lies Below was reused for Temple of Lomarith and Belly of the Beast. This explains why there's no distinct "What Lies Below suite" featuring unique ambient and light combat stems. The end result here is nearly identical to the OST version, but I tried my best to distinguish it as much as possible. Currently using the uncompressed mixes rather than the tracks that came bundled with the digital artbook. It should sound a little better now. A lot of really unique stems that never made it into the OST that have very specific uses within the arrangement. A real head-scratcher, but I managed to figure it out. This was going to be in excess of 12 minutes, but I thought that was a bit much. There was more light combat used and the entirety of Hebeth made its way into that mix, but I scrapped those sections. I think this is better. Worth it though. The Cosmic Realm takes up such a massive portion of The Dark Ages' story, so it makes sense that the main track scoring this otherworldly dimension is equally lengthy. Into the Void is among my favourite compositions in game. The Dark Halls motif throughout is fantastic, but credit has to be given to the unique ambient suite. Very reminiscent of Aubrey Hodges' work on DOOM 64.Speaking of, I may have overdone it with the quantity of Dark Halls choruses, but going into this track, I wanted it to have five choruses like BFG Division. Ironically though, there's no boomstick to be seen anywhere in the thumbnail/video. It's there in spirit though, I can feel it.Not only did I intro this track with He Is Out There, I decided to use the opening title drop theme as the primary chorus and the closing title drop theme as the secondary chorus. I wanted to use more of the light combat sections to act as verses between the galloped triplet chorus. I think I did rather well in that regard. The other heavy stems build up to the chorus rather than being their own, self-contained riffs like in the OST. @SPCHC posted his mix of Unholy Siege not too long ago, and it prompted me to do the same. We went in totally different directions, with SPC choosing to use mostly gamerip stems for his track, whereas I chose to use more of the official OST mix. SPC also seemed to use more of the unmixed sections in the game files, which is a very unique touch. From what I have heard, I think they've done a fantastic job. Second, while I haven't listened to the entire OST yet, I have played the full game, and let me tell ya, fantastic stuff. The Cosmic Realm levels are some of the most unique gameplay experiences I've had, and in a DOOM game no less. I adore the story too; I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I'm very much looking forward to posting my mixes over the next few months. (I was going to have a special, fatmetro-style edit for this video, but I'm thinking I might save it for a different song.
