Hidden and private, easy access and many acres all kinds of growth make it an ideal spot for the bees to flourish. Let's not forget the tallow grove and row cropping fields within 1/2 to 1 mile from the spot, one of which has cotton planted that is just starting to bloom. My brother brought his skid steer to the location and unloaded the bees for me. It will be fun to see how they do! Beekeeping: DO THIS to Fix a Honey Bound Hive & Save the Bees brucesbees 2023-07-14 | A strong honey flow is a beautiful thing. The bees work hard and pack the excess nectar into the hive and it becomes beautiful tasty honey. If the colony is strong and the flow is intense the bees will pack honey everywhere, including where the queen is supposed to lay. This can become dangerous for the hive as it can give pests the upper hand causing and otherwise strong and healthy colony to crash. As we harvested honey we encountered just such a colony and addressed the issue immediately. This video shows how we attempted to fix the problem and how it worked out. 💥A Good Story in a Tough Year of Beekeeping brucesbees 2023-06-10 | This year has been difficult and strange in many ways. The weather was a bit strange back in the winter and spring and the honey flow has been mediocre at best, but this long hove has been a good story during this tough year of beekeeping. It's been a fun experiment for sure.In July of last year Greg Burns brought some of his Nature's Image Farm queens down here to Southeast Alabama and they were introduced into some of my colonies. Then in October Rickey Roark (horizontalbees.com) and his wife Ruth delivered a beautiful Long Hive all the way from North Carolina. We put a small nuc of bees from with one of Greg's "Pepto Pink" queens into the Long Hive. I nursed them along all thru the winter and into spring, wondering if they would survive. Greg assured me that they would be ok even though they dwindled down to a very small cluster size. Sure enough, when the tie was right, the colony exploded! It really has been something to behold. It has been a lot of fun utilizing Greg's genetics in Rickey's hive. I respect both men greatly. 🐝 Crazy Honeybee Swarm On Lawn Mower - Challenge Accepted! brucesbees 2023-05-31 | I received a call from a local business about a honeybee swarm that had settled on a lawn mower in front of their store. Needless to say something had to be done! I thought it would be an easy catch, but the bees had other plans. Watch as Jackson, Tony, Ronnie and me tackle this swarm. 💨Lighting a Bee Smoker and Keeping it Lit. All. Day. Long. brucesbees 2023-05-09 | The smoker is a critical piece of beekeeping equipment and lighting that smoker can be a challenge, especially for those who are new to beekeeping. Once lit it can be hard to keep it going strong enough consistently work the bees. It can bee aggravating and frustrating to have to stop and continuously re-light the smoker every few minutes. The good news is that there it is possible successfully light your smoker and keep it lit all day long. There are many ways to do it. In this video I want to share what has become my favorite fuel and technique for lighting and maintaining my honeybee smoker. I hope this helps those who struggle with this. 1 Hive to 4 & a Painted Queen Bee. How are they now? brucesbees 2023-05-08 | Splits are one of the coolest things in the beekeeping world and there are so many ways a beekeeper can accomplish this task. In a recent video I took a chance and made an early 4 way split on February 14. Then I did a follow up and they seemed to be doing well. A few weeks later I was marking queens and a marker leaked all over the queen. I named her Big Red. If you haven't seen that video you should check it out! In this video I did hive inspections on the splits, April 29, so the bees have had plenty of time to get established. I also took a fe minutes to check in on Big Red. 🇦🇺Australian Beekeeping with The Bush Bee Man & his Son brucesbees 2023-04-19 | I had the amazing opportunity to share some time talking bees with Mark DeCaux @TheBushBeeMan and his son John all the way from Australia. We had a nice chat about bees and we also discussed the concept behind their channel. We were able to compare Australian beekeeping and beekeeping in the US. We also talked about varroa mites and the pending problems that may arise as the pest approaches Southern Australia. Splitting Bees - Disappointing Results (Could have been worse) brucesbees 2023-04-16 | This is the follow up video for early season splits we did a few week back. If you'll remember I tweaked my method a little. Well, we had some crazy weather and early splits with cells can tend to be a little risky. To be honest the results were a little disappointing but could have been much worse. In this video I inspect several colonies to see queen acceptance rate. I also show what happens when a paint pen bleeds while marking a queen (Big. Red got painted). In this video you will see that even though things don't always go as planned there are are still positive takeaways (silver lining). Helping a Concerned New Beekeeper | LONG HIVE Inspection brucesbees 2023-03-27 | I love bees. I love sharing my experiences with bees through this channel here @brucesbees. But it's even better when I can work with bees and also meet others and help them along the way. In this video I was able to meet a new beekeeper, Kim. She and her husband have built a long Langstroth Beehive. They then remove a colony of bees from a water meter box and placed them in the hive. I am impressed!Kim however noticed some activity during a recent turn in the weather that had her concerned and reached out for help. Unfortunately folks on some of the most popular FB groups have been less than nice and so she was discouraged. I stopped by one evening after work and we took a look. It was a great experience. We were able to check the bees and fix a few problems. Hopefully the bees are now set up for success. Don’t Make this CRITICAL Mistake with Formic Pro! brucesbees 2023-03-19 | I applied Formic Pro to one of my colonies and put a lot of effort into capturing the experience in order to help others see if it was something that might help them in their battle against Varroa Mites. Everything was perfect, or so I thought. As soon as the video dropped the comments came rolling in and I realized something was wrong. I decided that the best way to fix it was to contact Tom Nolan and invite him to walk me through the process. Tom is the Formic Pro Rep for North America and New Zealand. He graciously obliged and we did a quick interview. It really cleared up the concerns that I had and I am now armed with better information for the future. I apologize for any misinformation gleaned from that video. I still believe it is a valuable video to watch on the effectiveness of Formic Pro here in the south. I did everything right except one thing and we address that issue here. Plan Comes Together While Splitting Bees brucesbees 2023-03-06 | I decided to tweak my method for splitting bees by incorporating the Stevens Queen Introduction Method into my early splits this year. Everything indeed came together but, as always, it was an adventure. For the first step of the process Brian Lee drove all the way from Birmingham (3+ hours) to help and thanks to him we got a lot of work done that first day. Then a few days later I had to battle rainy weather in the evening time to try and plow through in order to get the second step done. But as always I was amazed when I placed the queen cells into the newly created splits as I watched the bees show interest in what will soon become their queen. Bees are so much fun and they are constantly teaching me new things. There so many ways to do things with bees. Theoretically tweaking my technique in this manner makes a lot of sense to me. BACKYARD BEES in APIMAYE Hives (Part 2) | Unconventional Split brucesbees 2023-02-25 | Last year I put all my backyard colonies of honeybees in Apimaye Beehives. I had not inspected them for a long time. With the temperatures climbing the bees have been very busy and it a good time to check them out. So I did inspections on on all 7 colonies, and, as usual, it was quite the adventure. I had such a good time and saw so many interesting things with these bees that I decided to break the video into 2 parts. In this video, Part 2, ,I was able to inspect a couple of more colonies, show what a high mite count looks like in a mite wash, and perform an unconventional split. What a fun day that was!
