It's fall and here in the Allegheny National Forest, we think of the trees as the big color changers but other habitats experience a color change such as meadows. While traversing it's exposed, dusty, and buggy environment is uncomfortable and maybe even grueling at times, the beauty cannot be denied.

This is a pretty nice campground with good spacing between sites and a good amount of privacy from tree-cover. Water surrounds it on 3 sides and you can feel safe walking around at night. We waited for a shuttle at Blue Heron and it took us to Station Camp, Tennessee. Storms, Rapids, and some sun! The water discharge was perfect for kayaking at 700-800 CFS. We meant to camp for 2 nights, but instead we camped for 1 night because of the unbelievably humid night-time conditions.

Camping a Pine Stand | Hickory Creek Wilderness, Pennsylvania Ryan Alfredo 2022-08-02 | Today, my dad Ron Alfredo and I head to the Allegheny National Forest to explore a section of Hickory Creek and make our way down into a pine stand that I found on google maps right on the edge of the meadow of middle hickory creek. We parked on Forest Road east of Coon Run confluence and headed down the hill towards the pine stand. When we got there, we found a hunter's camp, began setting up camp and realized my dad had forgotten his tent poles. At that point we just went out to the meadow to do a little hiking and get some drone footage with the DJI mini 3 pro before hiking back to the car around 1:30 PM.The pine stand is home to a large population of Sharp Shinned Hawks. You can hear them making their calls all day. No other birds can be heard in the stand.

We parked on Forest Road, directly across the valley in hopes of finding a place to camp somewhere near coon Run. We hiked down the valley and across the meadow and found a place to camp somewhere along Coon Run in the forest near some beaver ponds. I sent the DJI Mini 3 Pro drone up several times to get an idea of the landscape.
Camping Jacks Run | Hickory Creek Wilderness, Pennsylvania Ryan Alfredo 2022-07-12 | My buddy Kreig and I travelled to the Allegheny National Park and hiked 2.1 miles from Forest Road and followed Eastern Hickory Creek upstream to Jacks Run and camped at an established site after a log stream-crossing at the confluence. The hike was easy, but the trail could be lost some times in areas of knee-high ferns. The trail sometimes follows an old railroad grade that runs along the sides of the creek. Sometimes it is elevated and walkable, sometimes it is lower and waterlogged, and sometimes it is covered in young pine trees.The video shows some drone footage from a DJI Mini 3 Pro, GoPro Hero 10, and a Sony A7III Camera.

The trail alternates between views of the river, to coastal forest, to beach. The native Hoh live across the river on the other side.
Night Kayaking Pymatuning Creek | Orangeville, Ohio Ryan Alfredo 2022-06-11 | Kreig and I put-in at the Orangeville Dam at 7:00 PM and travelled 2 miles up-stream where we hung out and waited for the sun to set. Once things started getting dark, we activated "NightMode" and floated back 2 miles in complete darkness.Besides getting more comfortable in the wild at night, especially on the water, another goal was to notice the change between the day-shift and night-shift animals as well as the change in overall conditions. It was a very interesting experience.In the beginning of sunset, there was still good light in the sky, slugs begin coming out of the grass lines onto the banks to feed and the birds are still chatty but getting ready to go to bed. Once the sun was set but not completely dark yet, the bird-call thinned out and an insect swarm dominated the water! Bats took over the airspace to feed on the swarm, performing all sorts of aerobatic maneuvers while vocalizing their typical click sounds in order to see. Later, complete darkness fell and the frogs began calling with the crickets as the night's cold set in. Fog began to rise from the water as the insect swarm has thinned out to almost nothing. Spiders were seen gathering their catches from their packed webs and Geese were seen slowly swimming back home (Geese refuse to fly at night, I guess because they can't see?)We ended up back at the starting point at 11:15 PM.

That lake is HUGE and the mountain-scene is at the other end so the whole time you are kayaking, it looks like you are taking a huge seamless picture with you as it doesn't move even while you move across the lake.Later we went back to Whitefish to a nice local bar called the beer garden to meet up with everyone and have some drinks before heading back to the AirBnB to continue.

The trail is considered the crown jewel of Glacier National park. It is such an odd feeling walking along the ridge and looking down at the vast landscape. It is surreal to say the least.
