Two instrument makers, that have known each other many years, explore the rich sounds of their instruments.
This is a contemporary exploration of the sounds and possibilities of the Louvre aulos.

The journey to learn to play and to make reeds and the aulos began in 2017 when I met Callum Armstrong and he introduced me to the Auloi, I felt deeply touched by the sound. The Aulos are from the Greek antique and were used in rituals, theatre, therapy and amusement. The two pipes are tuned in a fourth to each other. The instrument itself is a reproduction of an instrument found in Egypt, exactly the same hole setting it must have sounded similar when people played it back then. Stefan Hagel measured the instrument in the Louvre Museum and made it possible to do an exact reconstruction. Though the players were far more experienced playing in a tradition of an instrument being already played for about 2000ys in those days. Nowadays we are rediscovering this ancient instrument and its sounds and for me it is an amazing thing to be part of the people rediscovering the Aulos.
The breathing technique used is called circular breathing. A technique that allows the player to maintain a constant supply of air to the reeds and produce a continuous sound. This technique is also used on other wind instruments, such as the launeddas and the didgeridoo.
Though sometimes referred to as a flute or double flute the aulos is a reed instrument.

In 2008 Stelios Psaroudakes released his fascinating paper about the Pydna Aulos. Thanks to his very accurate measurements it was possible to make this reconstruction made of boxwood. The original instrument was made of bone.
The instrument played in the video is a Louvre Aulos.

Visitors to the Cueva de la Pileta are deeply moved by the cave.
They are touched by the timeless quality of the prehistoric paintings and the living presence of memories long forgotten. Honoring these memories, the Bouillon family has been taking care of this cave over four generations with a great sense of responsibility for the integrity of the site.
We came to the cave with the intention to lend our voice and the sound of our instruments to this living presence.
Searching for resonance within the physical space of the cave, we connected to the energy of our ancestors from the Paleolithic and Neolithic times.
We entered the cave with an open and receptive heart to listen. From this place of deep listening we were able to respond through the sound that emerged, forming a relationship between our own inner being and the hidden qualities of the cave.
The wisdom of the feminine, visible through numerous paintings and fertility symbols, came to life as a soft yet potent force.
We felt embraced and challenged in this beautiful womb created by nature.
Feel invited to join us on this journey into the depths of the inner earth, where the nourishing qualities of stillness and the intimacy created by the darkness of the cave are a call to remember and honor our connection with the divine.

"There was a period when art and religion stood so close to each other that they could almost be equated. Song was prayer, drama was divine performance, dance was cult (magical—holy—powerful). Dance accompanies and stimulates all the processes of life. It enables, in turn, other arts to come into being: music, song, drama. Its motifs have remained the same since antiquity, as the round dance, the spinning dance, the forest ring. All have their origin in the fertility magic of the most ancient times."

Do you feel the sound is triggering something in you?
The Aulos are from the Greek antique and were used in rituals of the Dionysos cults. All the players I know have described interesting experiences provoked by playing the instrument and listeners too.
The two pipes are tuned in a fourth to each other. The instrument itself is a reproduction of an instrument found in Egypt, exactly the same hole setting it must have sounded l similar when people played it. Though the players were far more experienced playing in a tradition of an instrument being already played for about 2000ys in those days. Nowadays we are rediscovering this ancient instrument and its sounds and for me it is an amazing thing to be part of the people rediscovering the Aulos.....
The breathing technique used is the very same like on the didgeridoo, circular breathing.

The acoustic of the place is very special, it has a reverb of 4 seconds, fun to play with it.
Thank you to the monastery to allow me experiencing this magnificent place.

the acoustic of the place is full of echo and reverb may be a bit too much, but it is kind of interesting to play with. The breathing technique used is the very same like on the didgeridoo, circular breathing. The recording was again a simple smartphone recording..

I want to share this video with you though it's been only a month that I play the Aulos. This is a reconstruction made by Robin Howell of an instrument that was found in Egypt. When I heard it first time, played by Callum Armstrong it touched me so deeply that I felt a strong inner calling to play this instrument myself. Here we are, the journey has begun. I'm going to spend a lot of time playing making reeds and experimenting.
