Feedback / フィードバック - 3D shooter for MSX2
updated
A brilliant scientist once built a tower full of mechanics.
He couldn't complete his work, so the tower is dangerous.
The granddaughter must solve the puzzles to reach the top.
Still needs a lot of work, but I hope you'll like it.
These three songs are (very) beta try-outs for the general sound on OPLL + PSG.
A "village", "field" and "heaven" theme, at least during daytime in the game (at some locations, the music will change according to the time of day/night).
Please tell me what you think.
Final version will also use SCC enhancement on top of the OPLL + PSG, if those soundchips are available.

I did not create these MIDI files. Found them online, I think they are official.

If you like this, I have more re-arranged Aleste music which I could run through this set-up.
In case you would like to have the MIDI files, just let me know.
Sorry, but no, I don't have any information on if this game will ever be released.

Just for testing. Sound is a combination of MSX-Music and MSX-Audio. The timpani are actually not samples. The only samples used are a cymbal and a hi-hat.
I can do far from everything I'd like to do with this specific music program, but at least it has quite complete MSX-Audio support, which is sometimes nice.
Title: "Dance of Flames"
Composed by Toshiharu Yamanishi
Arranged by John Hassink
Initially, I considered arranging this song in the 'style' of the usual 1988/1989 MSX OPLL music.
Meaning, only using 3 melodic FM channels in lieu of this 6 FM channels + 2 PSG channels version.
In order words, like this song would have been on the soundtrack of "Feedback" or "Undeadline" or "Aleste 2". You probably catch the drift.
After all, I decided against it and went for the 'all out' approach that you see and hear here. I hope that you like it.
If there is interest, I could still try to do a version that's more in line with early MSX OPLL soundtracks.
A few days ago, ToughkidCST uploaded a video of an MSX machine playing this soundtrack using OPN2 (YM2612), with Grauw's VGMPlay:

This is no coincidence, as that video directly inspired me to create this cover.
Thanks for your attention and see you later!

I don't consider this version as finished. First I have to figure out how to 'fake' a believable orchestra hit on SCC, and fix some other issues. I hope you will enjoy this anyway.

This will be part of a mini medley. I'm going to do more songs from the game. I hope that you will enjoy this little preview.

Big thanks go to Huey, Wyrdwad, Inverse Phase and Wolf.
I tried to re-arrange it in the style of MSX Salamander, as if it were really a song in the MSX soundtrack, taking into account restrictions such as maximum channel use and no SCC+ perks.

This is the second edition of a series in which I will showcase a selection of favorite songs from my old mentors.
Starting with tracking as an aspiring 15-year old chiptune composer, sometime in 1995, knowing only MML before, some music veterans of the MSX scene took me under their wings and taught me a lot of what I know today.
This series is meant to express my gratitude for this and to show everyone how awesome their music actually was.
There is no special reason behind the order of the songs, they're just aligned in a way that I thought sounds nice. Even if it's a difficult task, I will try to keep it at five songs per "sensei".
Also, to convey the timeframe and -spirit as accurately as possible, I will keep it to their MB-Stereo (8-bit) work.
This second episode is dedicated to Hans Cnossen, also known as "Kid Cnoz", as was the 'stage name' jokingly endowed upon him.
After mister Meits, my first sensei, had taught me the basics of tracking, along with some chiptuning tricks, I came into contact with Hans.
As we exchanged songs, yes, still using 'snail mail', but also in person, he taught me some important composition techniques along the way.
The most important of those being, that the melody is the most important component of a song, and that it should always be on the foreground to shine.
I used to make a big deal of the accompaniment, because of my inherent fear that the music would otherwise be 'boring' to the listener.
While I'm still far from where I want to be after all these years, Cnossen showed me the right path back then.
It was an extremely tough job to select only 5 songs from sensei Cnossen, in order to showcase his wide range of music styles and overall versatility.
The picture in this video is a tribute to the Moonblaster 1.4 instrument preset which he seemed to have an obsession with - the "Laser Harp".
Thanks for everything, Hans!
I hope you will enjoy this second issue of "Honoring the Sensei" and thay you'd maybe look forward to the next one. Who'll be next? I already know, but you'll just have to find that out...

I tried to make a good PSG version, but I wonder if anyone still plays MSX games with no FM support.
Left - OPLL
Right - OPL1

One of the hardest arrangements I ever did.
Ofcourse, this is totally cheating, as I'm using all 5 SCC channels and all 3 PSG channels, whereas Konami, had this game been on MSX, would have used only 4 SCC channels and 2 PSG channels in-game.
Maybe, I'll make a version someday that will use those limitations, so we can get the experience as if this was really an official Konami MSX game at some point.
Special thanks for putting up with me - I mean, listening to work-in-progress stages of the song and suggestions go to:

It's for a game that I always wanted to make.
Since then, it has seen many incarnations on several chips and trackers; SCC, OPL4, Moonblaster 1.4
25 years later, this is the beginning of the definitive version for MSX with 8-bit OPLL (FM).
I hope you like it.
I manually re-arranged it to TriloTracker for FM because I thought it could sound better, and also to test the nearly final form of the OPLL version of the tracker.

As oldskoolgamertje's channel was deleted, soundtracks such as these are not on YouTube anymore.
Did this video to fill the gap, because it's supposed to be up here.
You're down in the jungle, baby!
You're gonna dieieieieie
Could be working for three years on this one and still not be satisfied.
But there's a time when you have to let things go. So here you have it.
I made a bunch of music especially for it. It was so specific and tailor-made for the game itself that I can't re-use it in any other project, so I decided to just share it with you, and anyone who would like to hear it.
Please don't ask me about the development of this game, I don't know anything.
Also, these songs are pretty much the ones that are done. I'm not looking for suggestions.
I hope you will enjoy the music.
