A look back at Opryland USA Amusement Park, Nashville, TN Derek Fugate 2015-08-11 | Here's a look back at Opryland USA in the summer of 1988. This beautiful Amusement Park was home to many world class rides and attractions, including 5 major roller coasters throughout the parks history. The most popular ride was the double looping "Wabash Cannonball", designed and built by Arrow Dynamics. This was one of the very first standard production Corkscrew models from 1975 and remained in operation at the park until closing. Opryland USA Amusement Park unfortunately closed after the 1997 season.
Poseidon Pinball; in-depth review & gameplay Derek Fugate 2022-02-10 | Here's a look at the rare and complex Gottlieb wedge-head pinball machine Poseidon, designed by John Osborne.This is a superb playfield design from Osborne featuring a unique playing card and water theme. The object is collecting pairs of red and black cards to light the WOW targets for either an add-a-ball or big points depending on the setting. There's also a Mystery WOW, which can only be lit once all the cards are collected and can award up to three extra balls or 150,000 points! This is very much like a "super jackpot" on a modern machine, but rarely seen on an older mechanical game such as this. It's also one of the most unique production examples from Gottlieb along with Hit The Deck, (the replay version), as both games are the only to feature red digital score reels and a beautiful turquoise painted cabinet. The fantastic artwork was provided by Gordon Morison.
Odds & Evens pinball, in-depth review & gameplay Derek Fugate 2022-01-26 | Here's an in-depth review of Bally Odds & Evens pinball machine, designed by Jim Patla. This game features a very unique action packed playfield layout with 12 rollover buttons, two kick-out saucers, three pop bumpers and a special feature with gate that can be opened once all the odds & evens are collected. The fantastic artwork was provided by Dave Christensen.
Stern Quicksilver Pinball; in-depth review & gameplay Derek Fugate 2020-05-07 | Here's an in depth review of the classic Stern Quicksilver pinball machine. This was marketed as "The fastest moving pinball ever", when it released in June of 1980, and I can see why! The playfield layout is one of the very best from Stern. Designed by Joe Joos Jr. and art by Doug Watson, Quicksilver is highlighted by it's superb sounds, spinners, seven drop targets, three pop bumpers and fast action return lanes! With only 1,201 units produced, Quicksilver is a rarity today.
Myrtle Beach Pavilion Arcade back in 1994 Derek Fugate 2018-07-30 | Here's a rare look at the Myrtle Beach Pavilion Arcade building during the summer of 1994. This version of the Pavilion building opened in 1949 and was unfortunately demolished after the 2006 season. The Pavilion Arcade always featured the latest arcade games as well as many classics! You can see in this video that all of the pinball machines were brand new of that time.

Swamp Fox roller coaster at night! Myrtle Beach, SC Derek Fugate 2018-05-03 | Here's a look at the awesome Swamp Fox wooden roller coaster, located at Family Kingdom in Myrtle Beach, SC. This is one of my favorite wooden coasters, and it's simply stunning at night with all the chaser lights and nice bright paint scheme. This coaster was designed by the late John Allen of the Philadelphia Toboggan Coaster Company, and I feel it's his best design still running today. It's also one of very few remaining ocean front classic wooden roller coasters. The Swamp Fox didn't have headrests at the time of this video, but has still remained pretty much the same classic design since its opening back in 1966.

Acoustic cover of Rocky Mountain Way, (by Joe Walsh) Derek Fugate 2017-05-24 | Here's a live acoustic performance covering the classic Joe Walsh tune, Rocky Mountain Way, from Hall's on the River in Winchester, KY. I'm playing my Fender Telecoustic through a Peavey Studio Chorus 70 amplifier, with dual output cables to the mixing board, via the amplifiers unique direct low impedance XLR outputs. The Peavey Studio Chorus 70 works out great for live performances, as the XLR out signals are very clear in producing true stereo sound. We use standard Shure SM58 vocal mics and a Shure SM57 mic with a foam windscreen for the Cajon drum box, which works out nicely.
Live acoustic music medley by Derek & Kayla Derek Fugate 2017-05-09 | Here's a live acoustic medley covering Keep Your Hands To Yourself by the Georgia Satellites and Tulsa Time by Don Williams. Kayla's playing the Cajon Drum Box here while I'm playing my Fender Telecoustic. I'm now playing the Telecoustic through a Peavey Studio Chorus 70 amplifier and very pleased with the sound. This classic Peavey stereo amp is crystal clear, with real spring reverb, which works great for our acoustic shows. The built in true-stereo chorus is incredible, and is the best chorus I've ever heard. The unique advantage to the Peavey Studio Chorus 70 is that it was designed as a studio amp, featuring two direct low impedance stereo outputs. This works out great for us in our live performances, as I simply use the amp as a (side-fill monitor), while running the balanced stereo outputs directly into our stereo mixing board for the main speakers.
Close Encounters Pinball, in-depth review & gameplay Derek Fugate 2017-02-20 | Here's an in-depth review of the very cool Gottlieb Close Encounters of Third Kind pinball machine. This is a very fast playing four-player game, released in October of 1978. This is one of the last electro-mechanical designs from the manufacturer, which utilizes many complex features in its design, including a factory installed solid-state System-1 sound board. It's a fun game, and one of only very few EM's to feature a mirrored backglass. The glass artwork from Gordon Morrison is very different than that of the solid-state version. It has lots of detail and features Devils Tower, which is not seen on the solid-state version.

This is a very smooth and fast playing four-player design, released in February of 1978. Cherry Bell utilizes many complex features for an electro-mechanical design, it's a fantastic competitive machine with great detailed artwork.

GoPro POV of epic pinball skills on Eight Ball Deluxe Derek Fugate 2016-09-15 | Here are some highlights from my qualifying game on Eight Ball Deluxe at the 2nd annual Cleveland Pinball & Arcade Show. I used my GoPro attached to my hat to capture all the point of view action and game play. Eight Ball Deluxe is the best non multi-ball pinball machine ever produced by Bally in my opinion. This was a beautiful example here used in the Tournament and was in great overall playing condition.

It has a maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, spruce top, and solid mahogany back for a great sound.

GoPro Drum Cam: Live performance covering some Southern Rock! Derek Fugate 2015-07-21 | Here's a GoPro (DRUM CAM) view of our band covering some classic Lynyrd Skynyrd southern rock. I'm using my vintage 1982 Pearl Export series drums here with Evans EC2 top heads and Evans Chrome bottom heads. These classic Pearl Export drums feature unique deep shell power toms that provide more depth and amazing deep tone. This big sound was very popular in the 80's era these drums were produced. They take a little more time to tune, but the sound is worth it! I also really like the strong hardware and quality of these Pearl Export drums.

Gottlieb Strange World pinball; in depth review and gameplay Derek Fugate 2015-03-02 | Here's an in depth review of the Gottlieb Strange World pinball machine. This is game model number 414 and was released in February of 1978. Strange World features a very unique playfield designed by John Osborne and outstanding artwork provided by Gordon Morison. The backglass artwork detail is simply amazing! This is also one of the very last electro-mechanical pinball machines released from Gottlieb, and only 675 units were produced. Strange World is a challenging game, with lots of action and very fun to play.
Gottlieb Close Encounters EM pinball machine; in depth review and gameplay Derek Fugate 2015-02-24 | Here's an in depth review of the classic Gottlieb "Close Encounters" pinball machine. This is Gottlieb model No. 424, and was produced during the transition from electro-mechanical to solid-state machines in 1978. It's a very fun game to play with lots of great action and good rule set.

I really like this keyboards capabilities of playing multiple sounds very clearly at once. I'm using the 64-voice piano, along with strings and electric piano. I'm also using the sustain pedal to hold out the strings.

Gottlieb Volley classic pinball machine; gameplay Derek Fugate 2014-10-01 | Volley was the pinball machine I utlizied in my seminar, "How to play pinball; skills and techniques from a pinball pro," at the 2008 Heartland Pinball & Arcade Supershow in Herrin, IL. Volley is a superb classic pinball machine with a great rule set, designed by Ed Krynski and manufactured by Gottlieb in 1976. This video was taken while practicing on the game before the seminar that year.
Gottlieb pinball designer John Osborne at Pinball Expo 2004 Derek Fugate 2014-09-25 | Gottlieb pinball designer John Osborne talks about the modifications he made to the Ed Krynski designed "Bronco"pinball machine while testing the game before production started. Osborne designed some of Gottlieb's most innovative and unique games from the late 1970s and early 1980s. Most of Osborne's designs were unfortunately very low production due to just how unusual they were; such as "Hit The Deck," with score reels that looked like fake digital score displays. Osborne's most popular design was "Haunted House," released in 1982, and was the first succesful three-level playfield pinball machine. Avalanche S&S roller coaster at Timber Falls Adventure Park Derek Fugate 2014-07-03 | This is the exciting wooden roller coaster Avalanche, manufactured by (S&S Worldwide) and located at Timber Falls Adventure Park in the Wisconsin Dells. There were only four S&S wooden coasters ever produced and this is one of the most intense and thrilling wooden roller coasters found anywhere. The 61 degree angle first drop was the steepest in the world for a wooden coaster when first opened. Timber Falls Adventure Park also features a unique custom Log Flume called the Timber Wolf and many other fun attractions.

Gottlieb El Dorado City of Gold pinball; in depth review and gameplay Derek Fugate 2014-03-05 | Here's an in depth review of the low production Gottlieb pinball machine El Dorado (City of Gold). This is game #692, and was made during the transition from Mylstar Electronics to Premier Technology in late 1984. Only 160 Mylstar sample units were produced and 745 Premier, for a total of 905. This is a great classic game, with outstanding artwork and sounds.

Strickers Grove Amusement Park, Ross Ohio. October 2013 Derek Fugate 2013-11-12 | Stricker's Grove is a beautiful classic amusement park built in 1924, located in Ross, Ohio. The park has several classic rides and two wooden roller coasters. Some of the unique rides include the Flying Scooters, Electric Rainbow (round up), Tilt-a-Whirl, Ferris Wheel, Scrambler and very rare Tip Top ride. The Tornado wooden roller coaster is a mirror image of the former Mighty Lightnin' coaster from Rocky Glen Amusement Park in Pennsylvania,which ran from 1958-1987. The Tornado opened in 1993 and uses classic Philadelphia Toboggan Company trains with standard single lap bars, also known as buzz bars.
The Pavilion Amusement Park in 1987, Myrtle Beach, SC Derek Fugate 2013-11-05 | Here's a look back at the Pavilion Amusement Park in the summer of 1987. The Pavilion was located in the heart of downtown Myrtle Beach and was a wonderful ocean front amusement park. Here's a rare look at the Haunted Inn dark ride, Log Flume, Caterpillar (with working canopy), Galaxi, Rainbow and the double looping Corkscrew roller coaster.
The Myrtle Beach Pavilion Corkscrew rollercoaster Derek Fugate 2013-11-02 | This is a classic video from 1994, featuring the Corkscrew rollercoaster at the Myrtle Beach Pavilion. This Corkscrew is one of the original Arrow Dynamics production models from 1975, originally opening at Magic Harbor in Surfside Beach before moving to the Pavilion in 1978. The Corkscrew ran at the Pavilion from 1978-1999, then sold to make room for the Hurricane wooden rollercoaster. This was my favorite Arrow Corkscrew rollercoaster and I have so many great memories of this ride over the years. This Corkscrew was rather smooth for its type, and provided great views of the Atlantic Ocean and busy Ocean Boulevard from the lift hill. Although the Corkscrew is no longer there, fortunately the classic wooden Swamp Fox rollercoaster is still operating in Myrtle Beach, and provides nearly these same great views. (The Swamp Fox is located at the Family Kingdom Amusement Park, formerly known as the Grand Strand Amusement Park). The Pavilion operated from 1948-2006.
