Luckily for our eyes and ears we had Tift, along with her pedal-steel-playing partner, Eric Heywood, perform a quick set in-front of Patrick Dougherty’s intricately detailed stickwork sculpture at the North Carolina Museum of Art. This is our second session filmed and recorded at the Museum this summer, and can also be considered a warm-up for Tift’s NCMA Summer Concert series performance on August 19th. Given the chance to film these talented artists in front of the Gyre structure in the North Carolina Museum of Art’s sculpture garden, it creates a scenario where we are capturing art created by artists in front of one of the Triangle’s most distinguishable outdoor art exhibits. If that isn’t meta, then maybe three songs and a cover with beautiful harmonies, acoustic guitar, and mandolin from the duo will convince you otherwise.Consider this performance a warm-up for the NCMA’s Summer Concert Series with Mandolin Orange on Saturday July 22nd. Best of Sawyer Sessions Covers Vol. 2 Sawyer Sessions 2017-06-08 | This month we are coming to you live from the surrounding Hillsborough and Durham communities with a throwback to some of our favorites in the Best of Sawyer Sessions Covers Vol. 2. When filming and recording Sawyer Sessions we usually ask our artists to perform a cover song of their choice. Their selections range from songs that inspired them to become musicians in the first place, to songs which originated from an era that either refined their tastes or defined their aesthetics, sound, and songwriting today. Like most great covers, what makes them unique are not just the songs themselves but the artists’ rendition of them. Let’s revisit some favorite cover songs from Seasons 3 and 4 with performances from The Stray Birds, Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed, Wesley Stace, Robyn Hitchcock, The Minus 5, and Globelamp.
Reed Turchi - “My Time Aint Now” Sawyer Sessions 2017-05-11 | While scouting locations for Sawyer Sessions we take various aesthetics into consideration including acoustics, lighting, and ambience. Occasionally we find spaces that suit the artists’ vibe and sound, while other times we choose locations based on artist requests. In the case of Reed Turchi, when the singer-songwriter stopped through the Triangle area to record a Session with us he had just one extra request- an old wooden chair.If you’ve ever had the fortunate audible pleasure of hearing or seeing Reed Turchi perform you will know that his latest album, Tallahatchie, is one stripped of the typical studio productions and latent with simple presentations- slide, voice, acoustic guitar, and an old wooden chair on a wooden floor.Luckily for us, we found the perfect chair at one of Raleigh’s premiere antique thrift stores- Father And Son, and also happened upon the perfect filming location for Reed’s stripped-down bluesy vibe. Filmed in an empty room complete with creaky wooden floors, against the backdrop of weathered walls and peeled paint, watch, listen, and tap your foot along as Reed satisfies our soul with his songs, “Goin’ Down South”, “My Time Ain’t Now”, and “The More I Think (The Less I Know)”.When Reed it not on the road touring in a town near you, you can catch him performing online in other notable live music sessions including KEXP and Jam In The Van. We had a sneak preview of this performance last December with his rendition of the John Prine cover, “Christmas In Prison”. When Wes stopped through North Carolina a few months back to film an official music video for his song “Better Tell No One Your Dreams”, we kept him busy and the cameras rolling as he performed an acoustic set at the historic Norwood-Jones Law Office. Located right up the street from the Yep Roc building in downtown Hillsborough, the Norwood-Jones Law Office was obtained from the Commissioners of Orange County by the Preservation Fund of Hillsborough and restored as a typical 19th century law office. When Chatham County Line performed their Sawyer Session for us back in October at the Hillsborough Arts Council and Gift Shop, they also performed one of their holiday favorites, “O! Santa”.
