Sound too good to be true? Well, maybe it is.
Come find out whether this new true flat sketchbook by LUCHETTI (pronounced "loo-keh-tee") lives up to that concept or if it's just another novelty art supply that will end up collecting dust on the bookshelf.

But, telling a good story isn't just about creating art – it's about well-crafted, quick, and clear communication.
Enhancing our ability to tell a good story will impact how effective our work can convey the message we wish to share.
So, how can we improve our skills to communicate more quickly and effectively with vibrant representation that's easy to translate by viewers?
Here are 10 ways I suggest to improve the story our work wants to tell:
1. Originality:
Even re-telling an old story can be original.
2. Identifying Our Audience:
Knowing who we're telling our story to.
3. Making it Personal:
Stories that come from experience are often the most impactful..
4. Enjoying Ourselves:
If creating becomes a chore it will show in our work and in our story.
5. Making it Attainable:
Rush leads to mistakes and omitting important details.
Having access to fresh ideas, quality materials, and time to work
is vital creating our best work.
6. Keeping it Simple:
Avoid overcomplicating a story with conflicting ideas, multiple directions,
or confusing intentions. An egg is simple; an omelette is not.
7. Telling a Story in One Take:
Most memorable works of art often focus on telling one, unique story.
8. Coherence & Continuity:
Creating a body of work that is consistent is vital in good storytelling.
9. The Devil is in the Details:
Too many details can cloud a story, distract the viewer, and obfuscate the focus we intended.
10. Done is Good:
Knowing when a piece is finished prevents overworking and potentially ruining it and sabotaging the entire message we are trying to share.

Inspired by strict standards set by the Deutsches Institut für Normung (German Institute for Standardization) in the 1930s, these DIN standards were adopted across Europe to ensure quality in building materials and paints, as well as compatibility in various products and processes, specifically in architecture, engineering, and manufacturing.
I love all things "retro" especially when they are tactile and functional. It's not clear what prompted Schmincke to release such an unusual and inspired set, but I was thrilled to pick them up and share them here in this review.
But – are they worth the price and do they live up to Schmincke's reputation?
Check out this video to learn more about these paints and a bit of history behind them! Cheers! ~ Mark

After a few days, it can be a very real struggle to come up with good ideas, find the time to immerse and be creative, and to find the courage to sit and create something totally new.
In this discussion, I talk about 10 ways of how I manage the "Inktober Struggle" to create new work that satisfies myself AND the challenge:
1. STOP. TAKE A BREAK. CHANGE YOUR SURROUNDINGS.
When it all starts to overwhelm, take a break and go for a walk.
2. ACCEPT THE REALITY OF THE SITUATION.
Owning the situation and pushing through is like ripping the Band Aid off.
3. BREATHE (Meditate while you create)
There is so much healing power in just breathing!
4. TALK TO SOMEONE WHO CAN RELATE.
Talking with those who "get it" can be a great stress relief.
5. EAT, DRINK, AND REST.
Eat healthy, not junk food, and remember to hydrate and rest.
6. RE-FOCUS.
It's okay to do other creative projects and to even incorporate them.
7. MOVE YOUR BODY.
Exercise, go for a walk, or even just walk around the house.
8. TAKE A SHOWER.
Refresh and invigorate your body with good hygiene!
9. UNDERSTAND THIS IS ONLY TEMPORARY.
Remember that it's only 31 days and it will end. Try to enjoy it while it's here!
10. QUIT & WALK AWAY
And always know that if you're not having fun or seeing a positive benefit, it's okay to stop and try again another year.
As always, I hope this video is beneficial and enjoyable for you.
If you're doing the Inktober challenge, I wish you the best of success in your wonderful, creative adventure!
Cheers and thank you for watching. Please provide any feedback or comments below, as I'd love to hear your thoughts. As always, stay well, stay healthy, and God bless! ~ Mark

Among them all are the "Seven Deadly Sins," which when studied, can reveal deep relevance in our daily lives.
While the originating with Christianity, they can be found in moral teachings in many other religions, as well.
1. Lust
2. Pride
3. Greed
4. Envy
5. Avarice (selfishness)
6. Sloth
7. Gluttony
I've always loved the classical themes in art, literature, music, and theater, from Greek mythology to Shakespeare, Spielberg to Stephen King. "The Seven Deadly Sins" is a favorite that has actual relevance in our lives. Find out more and how they impact artists, as well.

Well, for starters, painting with Schmincke watercolors, for me, is like painting with love, itself. They are serious, yet playful; complex, yet fun; subtle yet intense.
But, they come with a very hefty price tag which may keep a lot of people from even considering them.
In the video, I discuss my relationship with these paints, their history, and why the process of making them – since the 1800's – is important.
Thanks to Tracy for asking about the the 12 colors I added to this set, which I've listed below.
I may swap out the Gold & Silver for another purple and red, which seem light in the set.
1. Raw Sienna
2. Transparent Umber
3. Raw Umber
4. Cobalt Cerulean
5. Green Earth
6. Rose Madder
7. Potter's Pink (this might be the best Potter's Pink I've every used, by the way!)
8. Cadmium Orange Deep
9. Cobalt Violet Hue
10. Sap Green
11. Transparent Red Deep
12. Cobalt Blue Hue
Here's a link to the video I mentioned:

However, technology has put letter writing on the same path as the typewriter and the pay phone. Mainstays of daily life now nearly forgotten... except for junk mail and bills, of course.
There is tremendous value in letter writing and what I call "passive creativity."

In those years, I've had the pleasure of engaging with Iraville (Ira Sluyterman van Langeweyde) on occasion and have been captivated by her unique style and densely filled worlds of color, value, and composition.
If there is an artist on social media whom I aspire to be more like, it's her. The dedication to her skills and work is nothing short of humbling.
And in this book, "Hideaways: More Art from Iraville," I was able to bring home a one-on-one conversation where reading her perspectives is like sitting over a cup of tea and learning the secrets of a true pro.
You can find her work on Instagram at @iraville or on YouTube, as well.
Come take a sneak peak at her new book as I discuss some of the reasons why, for me, this will be a fantastic reference tool I'll come back to time and time again!
Cheers and thank you for visiting.

No matter which brand you look at, water brushes can enhance your painting skills, help develop an understanding of water control, and even make your experience with watercolor painting more fun than with traditional brushes.
Whether a beginner or a seasoned artist, water brushes are a valuable tool.
Brands like Sakura, Pentel, Caran D'ache, Tombow, Holbein, Derwent, Kuretake, Faber Castell, and even Barnes & Nobel each have a line of products. There are tons of private label brands like Arteza, Maike Depot, and Junreox, made in Asia and similar to more expensive brands. Some have unique features, like a push-button or body design that won't roll off your table.
For me, I use Pentel Aquash Water Brushes and have been enjoying them for years. Here, I talk about why they're perfect for travel, on-the-go, or when I have a few minutes to paint and don't want to pull out water and cups, paper towels or cloth, and my expensive brushes.
GEAR:
• Etchr cold-pressed 100% cotton sketchbook
• Sharpie fine & ultra-fine pens
• Pentel water brushes
• Daniel Smith watercolors

Many of the prompt words this year were not as strong as I was hoping for. Words like "ponytail," "uh oh," and "booger" left me wishing there were more articulate and evocative words.
Still, there were some fun surprises, a few homages, and a lot of learning with each piece!

Now, no one says we "have" to do any kind of challenge; however, if we DO decide to do one, consider whether it's because we "want" to take on the challenge versus if we "need" to – and why? Here's some thoughts:
Why we might WANT to do a drawing challenge like Inktober?
1. TO GET BETTER
2. TO BE MORE CREATIVE
3. TO GET BETTER WITH OUR TOOLS
4. TO TRY SOMETHING NEW
5. TO GET PEOPLE TO SEE & LIKE OUR WORK
Why we might NEED to do a drawing challenge like Inktober?
1. TO BUILD OR RE-BUILD OUR CONFIDENCE
2. TO ENGAGE OUR CREATIVITY
3. TO CONNECT OR RE-CONNECT WITH OUR TOOLS
4. TO CHALLENGE OURSELVES
5. TO JOIN LIKEMINDED ARTSITS FOR CREATIVE FELLOWSHIP
Thank you for watching and if you enjoyed this video, please subscribe to receive more creative content like this in the future to help motivate, inspire, and get you into your creative spirit!

When you have too many sets or tubes of paint, it may be time to consolidate into a SUPER PALETTE of your favorite colors, brands, or box.
After showcasing several sets I've modified, I provide a quick walkthrough of how I modify a set to expand it into a larger collection.
While it's fun for yourself, it can also be a great gift for another or something that you can sell, if you prefer.
For me, it's a hobby to build something new that I can enjoy for years. I hope you enjoy the video and as always, thank you for watching!

Whether we are amateurs beginning our creative journey or seasoned artists who have been at it for decades, without nudging our creative development even just a little bit, we will be caught in a repetitive cycle of creating the same work, over and over, without every breaking out.
By introducing a single change in the way we work, the tools we use, or the environment we work in, we can alter the course of our creative development by leaps and bounds.
ALSO in this video, I share my Inktober 2021 Wrap Up with you, and how I chose to push my own creative development to create a unique set of characters during the challenge and for 31 days get to intimately know them to finish with a cohesive body of work that I'm pleased with.

I know for me, I recently made a dramatic change in my career as a corporate and contract artist to do something completely different and start a whole new career, while keeping my art career in-tact, at home – but on my terms.
In the video, I simply discuss some of the ways to recognize if maybe it's time to re-evaluate whether we're still on-course with our passion for creativity, as well as our goals for what we expect from it.
Some of these include:
• Having a gut feeling that things are not progressing.
• Feeling like we're stuck in the mud, not going anywhere.
• We find more frustration than success.
• That we're doing art for the wrong reasons.
• That the goals we've set have come and gone.
• When we understand the concept that "change returns success."
• Discovering that we've lost the passion for our work.
• When we just give away our work on social media or to a job.
• When money becomes the issue.
• We have a strong desire to simply try something new.
As aways, I'd love to hear your feedback on this discussion, so please feel free to leave your comments below. Thank you so much for your time watching. ~ Mark

But, while big brand art supply manufacturers spend millions every year marketing their products to artists around the globe, small, independent manufacturers like A. Gallo create their products to their own, highest standards and package them leveraging the creative resources around them – all without the million dollar budgets.
Let's take a look at why the name A. Gallo is becoming a name that people are talking about and why they deliver to a fiercely loyal community who adores their branding, personalization, and the human touch that has become their signature in all they produce.

When I first introduced "passive creativity" to students back in the 1990s, I could see the light go on behind their eyes. It is an incredibly simply technique that can have a powerful impact on just keeping our creative spirit engaged, whether we're in a slump, on the go, or just disinterested.
The best part is, that anyone can apply this technique – beginner, student, advanced, or expert, alike!

Being a fan of Fabriano paper from Italy, one of the oldest manufacturers dating back to the 1200s and favored by Raphael, DaVinci, and Michelangelo, I decided after a big project to treat myself to the real deal. So, I ordered this beautiful little Mignon Wishes book right from Fabriano in Italy, along with two other products, which I'll share in upcoming videos.
This is the kind of book every artist should keep in their studio. Not for serious work or studies, but as a personal journal to their heart and creative spirit. To create in whenever that moment strikes and what's left behind is a memory of that moment in time, to reflect on and smile, cry, roll our eyes, or simply shake our head in remembrance.
I love this little book because I know what it will be 10 years from now.

I literally stumbled onto this app while on Instagram. I dismissed it, initially, but then was curious to learn what it could do. WOW! Once I got into it, I had no idea how rich the app would be. They packed it full of features, settings, tips, tutorials, and more so there's no way to get bored while using this app.
As a disclaimer, I have no affiliation with this company (Cube MG LLC) and I am not paid to promote or review their products. I just think this is an amazing, educational, and really fun app that I wanted to let other artists know about.
DaVinci Eye is a $4.99 fully-functional app designed for newer Apple iPhones and iPads, though it may be compatible in Classic Mode with Android, as well.
So, there are other drawing aid and/or tracing apps out there, like the free SKetchAR app for iOS and Android, but they are significantly more limited in comparison and don't leverage AR capabilities.
Also, there are desktop products, like the Lucy Drawing Tool from LucidArt, which is designed after the old Lucigraph devices from years ago. It uses lenses and mirrors to allow users to look into a lens, see their subject in the distance, and see the subject reflected onto their paper, below. The issue is that it clips onto the table, so it wobbles when you draw, causing the subject to misalign.
In this video, I mention a previous video about "Why TRACING is Good for Artists."
Here's the link to that video: youtu.be/cI4Ht9iNZDQ
Below are the PRO's and CON's of the DaVinci Eye AR Drawing app, starting with the CONs:
CONS:
• May be considered expensive at around $5.
• Does not work with older Apple products (specs below).
• AR Mode does not work with Android products.
• No support (as of now) for Galaxy or Google devices.
• Requires phone to be placed on top of a glass (or similar) to use; concern of phone falling or being knocked off, accidentally, causing damage.
• Some minor, forgivable glitches in the software (sometimes relics would not disappear, entering Add Anchor would not permit exiting to main menu, etc).
• Uses significant processing power (static it consumed 28% battery power).
• Moderate file size: 132.7MB.
• Moderate to steep learning curve, especially for non-tech savvy users.
• Interface and features can be complex and overwhelming until user becomes familiar.
PROS:
• At $5, considerably inexpensive for such a feature-rich app that may be useful.
• Works seamlessly with newer Apple products.
• Interface and navigation are easy to use, with some time exploring.
• An excellent tracing reference resource tool.
• Promotes more effective drawing skills.
• Helps to develop shape, value, and perspective recognition.
• Does not require the internet to use, or even electricity if phone is charged.
• Includes daily challenges and inspiration photos.
• Features challenges and motivational components.
• Access to a wealth of tutorials, lessons, and user-community.
• Gallery-like format to share work with others.
• An excellent educational resource.
• and much more!
