Digenis and Death - Epic Byzantine Music : Live Version with Dimitrios Dallas Farya Farajis Boiling Hub 2025-10-27 | A short excerpt from my upcoming conversation I filmed with the man @Dimitrios_Dallas, where I wanted to showcase an example of the built-in understanding of the Ison that Greek musicians possess. The Ison is a continuous drone accompaniment that, on instruments like the laouto, holds to the tonic + perfect fifth, then goes down to subtonic + perfect fourth during moments of cadence to give a sense of downward descent towards conclusion. Dimitrios had never heard this song before, but before me even finishing the first verse, he knew when to drop down the Ison, because I constructed this melody using pre-existing melodic material and patterns that permeate Greek folk music, and Dimitrios, being intuitively familiar with them, knew immediately how to accompany the song with Ison-logic.This is a great example of how recognisable patterns and algorithms define diverse musical traditions, and how traditional musicians from a culture don't need to have heard a specific song beforehand to be able to play it, because what defines the sound of specific traditions is a set of patterns and algorithmic logic that all the songs share, rather than each individual song being unique and individually isolated. Musicians don't need to know a specific song to be able to play it if they're already fluent in the *musical language* the song is created in.

Digenis Akritas - Epic Byzantine Music Farya Farajis Boiling Hub 2025-10-17 | This is a song I've been wanting to remake for a while. I made this one back when I had less contacts within the Greek music community and means to research to texts and lyrics, so the best I could do to represent Digenis Akritas was to use the same Byzantine chant in both Arabic and Greek to represent his Arab-Greek heritage.But Digenis is THE figure of Byzantine literature and folklore, and he deserves a far more complex and fully fledged song. I will be remaking this song into a far richer epic, both musically and lyrically, with not only this chant, but also lyrics actually about Digenis from the Akritic songs and everything. So this old version gets reuploaded here, and hopefully in not too long, we'll get a new one on the main channel
