So this time I decided not to solo over the entire song like I'd usually do. I played what I would play on this song - if my guitar was in it from the beginning and needed to support the vocals. I edited the song to contain all of the "unique" parts, so you get the intro, verse, chorus, various bridges and then a little bit of my solo over the last part of the next chorus.
I slightly underestimated the tempo that this song is played at (175bpm) and I came up with a lick that was really difficult to play at that fast of a pace. Well, that's actually not entirely correct - I first had a different solo prepared, but that was over a month ago, I did other things in between and I forgot what it was... so then this new lick came out and I needed time to practice. A lot of time to practice... very, very slowly ;)

I didn't expect this song to take this long to cover. Especially since I somewhat had the core idea down before I even started. The scope sort of grew as I was doing it and about 70% into it, I came up with the idea for the super funky 2nd verse and then the part after the 2nd chorus. Then I came up with the concept of making the song more and more aggressive further on, to sort of resemble a boss fight with different phases. I think I've managed to accomplish my goal and it came out pretty good, although I had to cut down my production / video editing time as I was leaving for vacation.
Oh, I almost forgot - this time I decided to include that 'slow' part that is usually in most of those vocal Persona songs. I was going to ignore it, but I randomly found a really great sounding Cmaj7sus2 chord voicing and chose to make a very genuine rendition of Mateus Asato style delay drones :D
Hope you guys like it! As I mentioned, this will be my last P5R cover for a while. What's next? Not sure, I've started a P4G cover some months ago and then I also have a Nier cover I haven't touched in over a year, so maybe those.

Hey guys, here we go with another instrumental Persona 5 Royal cover. This time it's "I Believe", or maybe it's "Life Will Change"? Does it make a difference, as long as it's awesome? ;D With the intro it may seem like my arrangement is way different than the original, but don't worry, the verse and chorus sound more like what you would expect. I didn't include the breakdown in the middle, it sounded pretty generic - a lot of P5 songs have a part like that - and I didn't want to arrange another one of those. Maybe next time! :)
With this video we have a lot of changes, first of all I've improved my tone a little bit. I lowered the input gain on my interface (previously I used to have it at a level where it would clip regularly) and I increased the gain in S-Gear. The reason for this is that I'd often lower the gain in S-Gear, but if you do that on the Stealer amp, you'll lose the 'fatness' that comes with higher gain settings. So lower input gain, but higher amp gain gives me a pretty 'fat' but super smooth tone. I like that little bit of fizz and general clarity and definition of the highs, so my amp settings are cranked on presence and treble. I also moved the cab mic closer to get even more of that effect. I use EQ after the plug-in to mitigate some of the resulting ice picky frequencies and I think I ended up with a pretty nice low-mid gain tone. Or at least something I like more than what I had previously ;D
I wasn't happy with my last mix, because I thought it was too muddy, so I've taken a closer look at my process. I started using Sonarworks Reference and bought new headphones, started mixing and referencing everything super flat and I think the result is a punchy and balanced song, but you be the judge! :)
This arrangement was inspired by many different artists. For the pre-chorus melody (finger picking and then the funky version) I was listening to Mateus Asato (mainly his Skrillex song). When doing the intro I listened go "Go Faster" by Richie Kotzen (great song, great album) and when arranging the chorus, I listened to Jack Gardiner's new release. SkyPinkBlue was the main inspiration for the super mid-rangey, single-coil sounding guitar you hear in the background of the chorus. I think it actually all blends together pretty well and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I also didn't play any of the parts exactly the same on the repeats, so that makes me happy as well - I hate repeating parts :P

#persona5royal #scuffhamampsPersona 5 Royal - Shred Over (Take Over cover) | PeetaPlaysPeetaPlays2020-05-30 | A rock / funk guitar cover of "Take Over" from Persona 5 Royal. Warning - contains guitar shredding and too many notes.
This is a pretty simple song in terms of P5(R) soundtrack and as such, mine is also a pretty simple arrangement. I think this is the closest I got to the original in one of my covers. I tried to make it sound super thick with wall to wall guitars and I omitted the brass punch ins, because while a big part of the song - I don't think they sound very good in the original. I wasn't even going to attempt at getting them to sound better in my cover :D
I've had a lot of this recorded for weeks, but then I lost some of my motivation to finish it. I couldn't come up with an ending solo for the longest time, I also had to stop playing guitar because I flat out injured myself with the first batch of solos :D
The break in the middle is my favourite part. It started out as neo-soul funky guitar in the background and then I added the pads and went full on wall of sound with it. I hope you enjoy the cover!

This took such a long time to complete. Besides the fact that this is an iconic battle theme and I absolutely love it, I also wanted to incorporate a bunch of different things in it - like the piano version, or the remake version etc. Some of these problems took me a long time to solve and figure out. Making such a metal tune sound *not metal* was one of the difficult parts. This song just lends itself to the genre so well! But that's not very surprising, considering the author.
I hope this is somewhat of a step up in sound production quality as I've learned a lot about compression during this. Probably half the time I spent working on this cover was just learning about compression :P The other half was stealing ideas from other songs to incorporate into this one! :)

I couldn't figure out how to do the intro, now I'm thinking I wish I stayed with the original song intro, it does sound pretty cool :D This electronic bass sound was also pretty difficult to get right, I think the one I used has a little bit too much information in the high frequencies and it clashed with the guitar. I've wanted to cover the original Mementos as a joke for a while, but since this new version came out, I just couldn't resist giving it a good, honest try. I think it came out to be quite a banger :D
The instrumentation is a little bit simpler than usual, but I thought that keeping it that way for the most part gives you a better effect when the "hit" happens. I think this made the chorus that much more powerful. Once I had the guitars done for the verse, I didn't really have any other good idea on how to fill the space appropriately and I thought that leaving that space there was the best solution.
At some point I did write the solo in the "interlude" and then started layering awesome rhythm parts. Then the rhythm parts somehow took over the solo and I ended up liking them better :)
Yes, I did include Scarified in this. The tempo was right, it felt right in that spot, I couldn't resist :D

Pick: Dunlop TIII 1.5mmArk - Persona 5 | Full Cover | PeetaPlaysPeetaPlays2020-01-15 | Rock (but funky!) cover of Shido's palace song from Persona 5 - "Ark".
I really like the melody of "The Ark". I know some people thought that it wasn't a good final palace song, being a little too simple and not getting you pumped up enough to fight Shido. Well, I sure tried to fix the 'too simple' part by adding a guitar version of "Impromptu for the Next Prime Minister". I didn't realise that it was in a different key until I learned both parts so I had to get a little creative with doing key changes to get there. Hope it worked OK and you'll like the result! :)
With this cover I'm also trying something new (to me): I want to stick closer to the original song in the arrangement style for at least the head of the song. I'm doing this so you can immediately go "oh, it's that song"; of course afterwards I do drift off and do my own thing later on ;) With some of my previous arrangements, I thought I was meandering a little bit too much and the result was that maybe I was straying too far from the original material, so I'm aiming to remedy it now!
Sorry for some dropped frames / video glitching. I'm trying new method of capturing video where I go from my camera straight into elgato and OBS instead of recording to a SD card. Makes it a lot easier to get video done, but there are some problems there to figure out too!

So obviously finishing this took me way longer than I initially expected. I thought I'd just do some small mastering tweaks and release the songs again, but in actuality I did a full remix, re-recorded some parts and then mastered everything.
Doing this album was a huge learning curve for me, as I've never really looked into mixing as much as I did this time around. I think it's pretty obvious that I also never really mastered my tracks before :D My main goal with this was more detail and definition. I think the lead guitar was featured a bit too prominently, so I wanted to move it back a little to allow the other instruments to be more audible. The original YouTube releases tended to be really bass heavy, so hopefully now the sound should be more balanced. I hope that at least most of the songs on the album sound "better" than the originally uploaded versions. Enjoy!Persona 3 - Memories Of You (Kimi No Kioku) | instrumentalPeetaPlays2019-06-19 | Groovy arrangement of the credits song - Memories Of You (Kimi no kioku) from Persona 3.
-----------
I probably say this every single time, but this took way longer than I anticipated. I had about 20% of the arrangement done when I recorded the bass and all guitars. The next day I went on vacation and focused on arranging drums and all piano parts. Then it was a really long process of mixing, where I stumbled and learned a lot.
The mix is not perfect, but it's as good as I can get it with what I have now. It got a little bit out of hand with length and I had to start chopping stuff out, but now I have ideas for more P3 covers :D
Sorry for meandering a bit in the beginning, just imagine it's like one of those video games you have to play for 5 hours before you see the title screen ;) Hopefully this particular cover brings me a little bit closer to my target of "sounds faintly like Persona 5 soundtrack".

The idea for doing this song was heavily inspired by BKMJMBOX's video. Ironically even though I arranged a solo guitar part for the intro, it didn't make the final cut of the edit as I changed my mind and decided to go with a 'foreshadowing' of a later second verse :)

Sorry for a low-ish quality video, but I'm moving in a week and I have tons of things going on!
I promised to cover this song way back in February and it finally happened! This occupied most of my mind space for the past 5 weeks (hence why I'm uploading it instead of celebrating New Year's Eve!). I was racking my brain for arrangement ideas and I just couldn't figure it out, turns out I'm at my worst when I try to style my covers to be like one particular song I currently like.
It was a lot of sweat and tears but in the end, I really like what I came up with. The first half is a bit crazy with a lot of different styles mashed together, while the second half focuses on a typical, more rock oriented melodic soloing. Hope you enjoy it!

So a couple weeks ago it was announced that Hajime Tabata would be leaving Square-Enix and also that all remaining DLC for FF XV except for Episode Ardyn was cancelled. It was sad news for me and other people, even though FF XV wasn't a great game and pretty much most people could agree that prolonging its life with more DLC was perhaps the wrong decision I still did enjoy it.
The game had many, many problems but I still think Tabata did a decent job - managing what they had, motivating a group of depressed developers who didn't want to work on the game anymore, probably mitigating a lot of pressure from management to just push it out the door already. It really was a miracle it was actually playable all the way through and I think Tabata took way too much blame for how it turned out.
So I took a spaghetti-western song and arranged it as... a different spaghetti western song I guess? It has a more modern sound for sure, hope you like it! :) This game has a great soundtrack.

So I went on a long holiday in July and almost missed the entire month of uploads :P Sorry! I wanted to do something quick and was also thinking of a CTR medley at the same time so decided on doing this one song first to test the waters. I think it came out great and it was a lot of fun! :)
Last week was E3, TLOU 2 was shown off and it reminded me how great TLOU music is. I always thought this song reminded me of "Hidden" from the Dexter OST and that song in turn reminded me of western spaghetti tunes hence the arrangement. I had trouble figuring out what to do with the middle part (what happens at the end was actually the middle in the beginning), but thankfully Brad Paisley's music was there to help and I managed to turn it into straight country for the chorus.
This was really fun to arrange, I love spaghetti-western music and I like the "Brad Paisley type of country", I've always wanted to do a song like this and it finally happened :D TLOU's main theme has the typical "movie" chord progression - a minor key with a major IV thrown in out of key, it's also a classic spaghetti-western (and surf guitar) move, which is why it was so easy to turn the song on its head like that.
I hope nobody gets offended by taking this very particular song and turning it into something else :)

I came up with this format to help me get some of my ideas out there. Whenever I have fun playing over a particular track, I'd like to be able to upload 'something' in a matter of hours, instead of weeks as with my usual covers. To be honest, with some of those songs, I lose all my steam once it gets to the 'serious recording' phase, so it's just nice to be able to put something out, after maybe 2 hours total of arranging, recording, editing etc. instead of having to wait for the 'full thing' to come together! :D
When it comes to those big projects, there's a point there somewhere in the middle when I don't even feel like a guitarist anymore because most of the stuff I'm doing is not guitar related, so that's another reason I'd like to do some more of these. Don't worry, this video format WILL NOT replace my regular covers. I'll still try to put out a 'full scale' video at least once a month! :)
Please let me know what you think about this 'minute video' idea, and shout if you want (or don't!) more of them :D
----
When I first played Persona 3 eight or so years ago, I wasn't into that kind of music at all (I was still listening to heavy rock at the time), so I thought that the OST was just 'OK'. Coming back to it now, I'm discovering that it's actually amazing! :D

I've tried a lot of new stuff with this video in both audio / mixing and video production so hopefully you'll like it! I was aiming for a bit shorter turnaround but it seems like it's impossible for me to get under 3 weeks with arranging / recording etc. and still having 'family time', working full-time and improving my own guitar playing.
As per usual, the initial idea for this cover was quite different than the finished product, it started out as continuation to the previous cover which is why I quote myself in the intro... but then it all took off on its own :)

I started doing this as a request in January, stopped for a bit and wanted to release it last week, but... Originally it was supposed to end at 1:51, at which point I'd leave it with a "TBC" style screen and I decided to actually record an ending to this instead, sorry ;D
It's quite unfortunate that you don't hear this song more in the game, I tried for my version to really give you the feeling of entering a tomb. It's a bit spooky, isn't it? And nostalgic? With a bit of abandonment? That's what I was going for :)
This has been on my hard drive, pretty much complete, since late Decemeber. I planned it as a December/January release, but life happens ;)
A collaboration with half-assed covers because he's a great dude and his ideas are awesome. We started off by coming up with different arrangements for 'the first song you hear when you get off the train in Inaba' (or at least that was my idea for a P4 cover). Long story short, hac's arrangement was awesome (and mine wasn't) so we got to work and this is the result :)
This was the first recording with my new guitar, yay! :D
P.S. I think I'm getting the hang of the whole 'write decent enough drums and record in time' idea :) Check out my first cover on this channel, I dare you. It was terrible.
P.S.2. I still have not played the entirety of P4G. I dropped it after the beginning of "Kanji Investigation" this time, not enough time for this AND guitar!

Right... so years and years ago I used to listen to some epic Kingdom Hearts rock / metal covers and I thought to myself "man, I wish I could do that!". Of course at that time the games have already been out for so long, there were hundreds of different covers and I also wasn't doing VGM stuff as I was deep into Paul Gilbert shred practice :D
At last Kingdom Hearts 3 MIGHT ACTUALLY COME OUT! There's a new trailer, a new theme, a teaser of a 'release date'. Exciting stuff. It's been over a decade since I first played KH 2, I was 16-17 at the time, now I'm 28. Feels like a lifetime ago, but I might actually be able to finally finish this journey!
When I first heard the theme, I thought the piano sounded a bit too mechanical to my taste, but it sparked an idea in my head and I think the song really has some great potential (as already displayed by the likes of Kyle Landry ;) ). This was my chance to finally do a 'proper' theme cover for Kingdom Hearts, so here it is. A very short one as that's all of the song that we got for now, so what happens later is up to speculation, but my ending is simple... and clean you could say :)
If there are any requests, I can tab it out for you.
Also, two uploads in a single weekend, craziness, huh? I'm not used to doing an arrangement and recording in a single day!

Sometimes an orchestral song is so great, I don't want to ruin it with a sketchy arrangement in a different style. I love orchestral music and it's really fun to put guitar on top of it, so this is more of a 'playthrough' than a real cover since I didn't really add that much of my own :)
Because the guitar parts were so simple, I decided to have some fun and capture MHW gameplay to create a 'story' for the video :P
I know, I know - I promised a Persona 5 cover, listen... it's done! I have it! I do want to make it a bit longer however and for the 2 weeks of January I was away in another country, then MHW came out and I played it for about 60 hours in the first week (oO) so there wasn't that much time to play guitar you see.... :P It will come, soon. I promise!
I also have a Persona 4 cover done that was a collaboration with another YouTuber, but he's been AWOL for over 2 months now so the finished song is just sitting on my hard-drive...

Along with Persona 5 it's my favourite game of 2017 and maybe on PS4 in general. I finished The Frozen Wilds DLC last week and thought that there's not better way to show the love than to cover the main theme of the game - Aloy's Theme!
I'm a huge fan of Nick Jonhston so if you listen to his latest album 'Remarkably Human', you might find that this arrangement is a 'bit' of a rip off of the song. It's so good though, I had to do it! :)
Man, doing these would be way easier if I always had an idea that I could realize in under a week without too much practicing.
It would be even easier if I didn't record any video :D

I've been away for a while, uni work, guitar competition - lots of things happening in my life, but I'm back now and I'm ready to get to work!
I'll try to do AT LEAST a cover a month, might be two a month if I have time to do something 'quick and easy' or don't record my own backing track. I'm very slow at recording and in general I don't like the process. This following year I'll be trying to focus on 'legitimizing' my guitar playing and becoming better at improvising, jamming and recalling licks so while I want to do as many arrangements as I can, I also want to spend as little time recording as possible as it's not teaching me new skills I want :D
Leave me some nice comments if you want me to write a tab for this. I could probably start doing 'teaching' videos for my covers if people want, let me know what you think!

(also bit of the Ending Theme / Hoshi To Bokura To / With the Stars and Us).
Let me begin by saying that I thought I was very clever by including the ending theme, which was my plan from the start. Only afterwards I realised that it already was at the end of Swear To My Bones anyway ;D
So to the point now - I originally wanted to do this song when I feel like I'm done with Persona 5 covers. However I'm doing it now, because I need to take a few months off. I 'accidentally' got into the finals in a Polish national guitar competition so I have to fly to Poland in August for the live show. Then I have to start (and finish) my dissertation since I'm supposed to have a master's defense in September. When all that's done, I'll come back, I promise :)
I love Persona 5 music and if things keep going that way, I might end up covering the entire OST. It would be ridiculous, I know, but it's just so good! And stylistically fits me so well! While I'm gone, feel free to leave me suggestions on what you'd like me to cover. Persona or otherwise. Have fun!

This song was weeks in the making ;D I first came up with that nice chorus part in the middle and decided to go from there. I think I had that part even before my Beneath The Mask cover, but didn't have an idea of how to do the rest of the song so I just put it on the back-burner. I then bought a MIDI keyboard and the arrangement became quite obvious. Even then, I think I've had around 15 different intros to this as I was going through different ideas (starting the song was the hardest part). I'm not 100% with the mix or some of the playing, but that will always be the case and I have to give up and release it at some point! :) Some of the video footage isn't amazing but I was recording it hours before getting on a plane to Poland, as per usual ;D

I was feeling very nostalgic after finishing the game so I went back to my December save and hung out with a bunch of my "virtual friends". As it usually happens, "Beneath The Mask" played after going back to "LeBlanc" one night and I felt compelled to do my own version of it. I came up with the slightly funky chorus part that is in this video, I flew back to UK (as I was in Poland during my "uni weekend"), listened to "Rivers In The Desert" a whole lot on the plane and got so excited about that song that I recorded it first.
Time has come to finally finish my version "Beneath The Mask". It started coming out a lot more positive and "happy" than I first envisioned. I raised the tempo just a tiny bit and decided to go with it. So here it is, my "Cloudy" version of Beneath The Mask that then moves slightly to "Sunny". I didn't change the key of the song, it's still in (V)Gm, however the change of context gave the song a completely new sound :)
I recorded the video late night, right before flying out to Poland again the next morning, as it turned out, I had a slight "mishap" with my camera's focus... Sorry for that. I had to use the footage because if I didn't, I wouldn't be able to re-record it for another week and then some other things might get in a way and I would've never finished it!

This is one amazing song. I was working on it for the past two weeks and trying to get that vocal line under my fingers just right. It's such a shame that the instrumental version of the song doesn't have the melody line at all, but hey, it's easier for me to use it as a backing track! :D
BTW, I bought a Panasonic G7, recorded this video in 4k and downsampled to 1080p so I'm hoping the visual quality is better than with my previous DSLR. Sorry for the erratic editing, it was one of those days today.

This is such a badass song that I knew I was going to cover it the first time I heard it in Kamoshida's Palace. I'm still playing through the game and I'm over 60 hours in so playing the guitar has been on the backburner for the past couple weeks :D Nevertheless, here's the best I could do over this awesome, funky song. I also took it upon myself to "remaster" the original song a little bit, as the instrumental version has virtually no bottom end.
BKMJMBOX will forever be my inspiration for doing these covers, so this is more akin to something he would do in his earlier videos - take the more or less "original" version of the song and just shred his heart out all over it :D

Kingdom Hearts Final Mix(-es) are finally being re-released on PS4 in US and Europe so I decided to use this occasion to bring you my cover / arrangement of "Dearly Beloved" from Kingdom Hearts 2. I originally played Kingdom Hearts when it first came out on the PS2 and I have many fond memories of it. The game itself and its music bring so much nostalgia for the virtual adventures of my childhood.
I've wanted to do an arrangement of "Dearly Beloved" for maybe 8 years now. I've listened to Kyle Landry's versions more times than I can count, but I never gave it a try as I didn't have enough... of "something" to actually pull it off. It might have been for the best however since I really like how this turned out! The solo was inspired by Mateus Asato, in case you were wondering!

I originally started working on this way back in 2014 but due to my move to UK, my Cubase project broke at least 10 times. I still plan to turn this into a proper guitar version, but for now, you can listen to this "ReOrchestration" because I think it sounds pretty cool.

I didn't want to do just "another jazz arrangement" of the song so I decided to bridge the gap a little bit - between the "Cartanica Diner" arrangement and the orchestral version of the song.
It was a bit touch and go there a few times, my Cubase project kept breaking and after recording all of rhythm guitars and half the leads, I had to export all of my files and start again in Reaper. Servers me right, probably won't be using Cubase again!
Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed this arrangement and let me know if you'd like to hear more Final Fantasy/video game music played me. I sure do enjoy doing it! :)
