Today’s Cybersecurity Lesson: 2-factor authentication
As you might expect, there are TWO parts to 2-factor authentication.
1) Something you know (like a password)
2) Something you have (like a phone) to verify your identity.
You type in your password like normal, then you confirm that it’s really you trying to sign in, usually through a text message or authenticator app. This one-two punch of cybersecurity makes it much harder for bad guys to steal access to your accounts.
Password theft is one of the most common forms of cyberattack, but with 2-factor authentication, even IF a hacker gets ahold of your password, they won’t be able to access your account without the second factor. This increased peace of mind makes it well worth the extra time it takes to sign in. Many online services offer 2FA as an option, including Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, probably your bank…
Are there drawbacks? Well, it does usually mean that you’re more dependent on your mobile device. If you lose your phone, that could mean—at least temporarily— losing access to your accounts. You’ll need to make sure there’s a way to recover access, either through backup codes or some other account recovery process.
And we don’t want to lull you into a false sense of security. 2-factor authentication ISN’T a 100% guarantee of safety. Attackers may still be able to bypass this kind of security by stealing your phone number through SIM swapping or other nefarious means. The bad guys are always out there, working overtime. But 2-factor authentication is one of the simplest and most effective ways to add an extra layer of protection to your online identity and personal data.

Today’s Cybersecurity Lesson: Strengthen your Passwords.
It seems like EVERYTHING needs a password. Not just your bank, but EVERY app you use to buy your groceries, gas up your car, listen to music... Some of these seem more important—more private—than others. But the truth is, once you start getting careless with some of your passwords, you’ve opened yourself up to cyber attacks. Be vigilant. Here are 5 simple ways to strengthen all your passwords—from the mundane to the deeply important.
LENGTH The longer the password, the harder it is to crack.
COMPLEXITY Don’t use a simple word or phrase
UNIQUENESS Every account deserves its own password.
IT’S NOT PERSONAL, IT’S BUSINESS Avoid personal information.
GET HELP a Password Manager will do a better job than you
BONUS ADVICE - change all your passwords regularly
This is just the START of protecting your digital information. There are many other steps you should consider, such as two-factor authentication or even passkeys that recognize your fingerprint or a scan of your face. Today's Cybersecurity Lesson: Don't plug in random thumb drives
Picture this: you find a thumb drive in a parking lot, and it says SPACEX on it. You’re dying of curiosity. It might contain the plans for the first city on Mars!
Don’t. Don’t do it. Just walk away!
NEVER plug in a USB flash drive that you find out in the wild. You don’t know what could be on it! Malware from a hacker, or worse, a “USB Killer” that contains a capacitor that stores up a charge and then discharges it, killing your hardware.
But what about those lovely free thumbdrives you’re getting in swag bags at conferences?
Forget it. They’re not worth it. Instead, buy yourself a nice clean SSD drive.

𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙏𝙞𝙥 5: If you want to really be comfortable with numbers, you need to spend more time with them. Make it a game! Whenever you look at a clock, factor that number. 415 is divisible by 5 (it ends in a 5). What is 415 divided by 5? 83, which is PRIME. Collect Prime numbers and get to know and love them. They'll come in handy one day!

𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙏𝙞𝙥 4: Want a more organic way to build your vocabulary? Expose yourself to a new kind of book. If you're reading the same kind of book all the time, you won't be exposed to new ideas (and new words used to describe them). Venture a little our of your comfort zone.
For example, in Agatha Christie you'll pick up the words "surreptitious, malevolence, and treacherous." In Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, you'll find useful words like "scrupulous, supercilious, and impertinent."

Regular Expressions (regex for short) is a way to search for patterns in strings. Python provides the re module to assist you in your efforts to search through strings. Maybe you want to find names in a database that satisfy certain conditions. But before you charge right in and start throwing regular expressions around, you need to learn the correct syntax.
In this video, you’ll learn how to compose regular expressions using such cryptic symbols as the caret (^), dollar sign ($), various backslashes (\d, \s, \w), and more. And just wait ‘til you see what happens when you start combining them into a powerful combo search expression.
We also introduce such concepts as quantifiers so you can see how many times you get a match. Match, that’s another handy function, along with fullmatch. You’ll learn how useful it can be to create groups to name certain parts of a regex. We could go on, but it makes more sense for you to watch the video and take notes. Then share it with a friend and have them take notes. Then you can compare your notes and see if you are in agreement.
We were able to bring you this video thanks to our generous Kickstarter backers! Find their names hidden (okay, not very hidden) in the video!

Welcome to Chemistry by Socratica! This video answers an important question—WHY should you study Chemistry, especially if you’re not planning on majoring in Chem. The truth is, Chemistry is a prerequisite for almost every STEM subject. Many fields of science, engineering, and medicine require a solid grounding in chemistry concepts. That’s why Chemistry is often referred to as “The Central Science.”
In this video we’ll talk briefly about the history of the subject—when did Chemistry actually start? And then we’ll dive into the various ways learning Chemistry will help you in Astronomy, Biology, Geology, Physics, Engineering and Material Science, and more. Finally, we’ll look at the ways the study of Chemistry can be organized into 5 major branches: organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry. Keep in mind, that isn’t the one and only way to organize the subject, just one of the common ways you’ll see the field subdivided.

In this video, we introduce how integrals are used in Mathematica and the Wolfram Language. Using the Integrate function, you can create both definite and indefinite integrals, and there's a handy popup widget that helps with formatting. We show you useful keyboard shortcuts, too. You can get a numeric approximation for definite integrals using the NIntegrate function. Double Integrals, Triple Integrals, and even higher order integrals are no problem for Mathematica.

✵✵✵✵✵ Measuring LIGHT in Astronomy
Just How Bright are stars, really?
From ancient times, people have been looking at the stars and deciding this one is brighter than that one. But how do you know if a star is actually brighter, or just closer to you? Astronomers use a wide variety of terms to distinguish between how bright a star LOOKS to us, and how much light it is actually producing. These terms can be very confusing! But we'll help you figure it all out.

Lists in the Wolfram Language are a fundamental structure. They represent an ordered sequence of expressions. And since everything in Mathematica is an expression, a List is an ordered sequence of pretty much anything! For example, Lists are used to represent vectors, matrices, and tensors. They are also the standard structure for passing collections of data to functions. To become truly fluent in Mathematica, you will need to master Lists.

This book has the collected true stories from our co-founder Kimberly Hatch Harrison (author of our Study Tips series). Although Kimberly went to a number of extremely elite schools (including Caltech and Princeton), she doesn't pretend to be perfect—far from it! Rather, she'll explain all the ways she did everything wrong until she eventually figured out what actually works.
This book will especially resonate with you if school came easy to you early on, so you coasted by until SUDDENLY school got really hard. Now what?

✵✵✵✵✵ Units of Distance in Astronomy
Light Years, Parsecs, AU (Astronomical Units) and kilometers
We’re familiar with kilometers (and miles) as measures of distance here on Earth. But when it comes time to measure distances of heavenly objects, it makes more sense to use the units AU, LY, and PC. That is, Astronomical Units, Light Years, and Parsecs. That’s because space is REALLY big!
Today we’ll examine these units that are most commonly used to measure distances in space, and when it makes more sense to use one rather than another. For instance, did you know that astronomical units (AU) are typically used for within our Solar System? But the distance to our nearest star, Proxima Centauri, is so huge that we really do need to jump up to using either Light Years or Parsecs. You'll even hear the terms megaparsec and gigaparsec!

✵✵✵✵✵ How to Use Small Angle Formula
SUPERMOON & MICROMOON (Astronomy)
Have you been surprised by all the headlines about SUPERMOONS lately? What IS a Supermoon, and is it really all that big? How do astronomers describe the visual size, or APPARENT SIZE, of objects in the night sky?
One of the essential tools astronomers use is the SMALL ANGLE FORMULA. This is a way to quantify this relationship: for a given diameter, the ANGULAR SIZE of an object decreases the farther away it is.
Today we’ll explain this formula, and work an example problem using the phenomena of SUPERMOONS and MICROMOONS. A Supermoon is a full moon at the closest point in the moon’s orbit (PERIGEE) whereas a Micromoon is a full moon at the point in its orbit farthest from Earth (APOGEE).
Supermoons aren't actually any bigger. The moon's diameter, or linear size, does not change. But its apparent size, or ANGULAR SIZE, does change! And that’s what we are quantifying when we use the SMALL ANGLE FORMULA. It involves a little Trigonometry.

You may know Socratica best for our videos about math, science, and computer programming. Our co-founder, Kimberly Hatch Harrison, is the creator behind our "meta" series of Study Tips, intended for students of all subjects. She writes this series, sharing her best advice for how to fix all your study woes. It doesn't matter if you study math, science, programming, or any subject, really—our Study Tips series is for everyone.
Kimberly was something of a prodigy, teaching herself how to read somewhere around the age of 2 1/2, getting good grades all through grammar school. But when she started at an exclusive Prep school in the 9th grade, like a lot of gifted students, she suddenly had to learn HOW to learn. These methods brought her success through high school, through college at Caltech, and grad school at Princeton. Kim further developed her understanding of the best ways to learn as an instructor of biology and chemistry, both at the high school and college level.
In this book, Kimberly lets you in on all her secrets. Where did these tips come from? How did she figure it all out? Generally, the hard way, by making all kinds of mistakes. The important thing is, she LEARNED from those mistakes, and is here to share her hard-earned wisdom.
Join us for a reading from the beginning of the book!
You'll soon see why you probably need your own copy.

Do you think Mathematica is only for Math? Mathematica can be used in ANY computational field, including math, science, finance, data visualization, bioinformatics, speech recognition, machine learning...you name it! Mathematica started as a system for doing mathematics by computer, but it evolved into the WOLFRAM LANGUAGE, which can be used for all kinds of computation.
This is the FIRST episode of our new course on Mathematica.
Be sure to sign up for our course email group (infrequent but excellent updates and messages):

In future lessons, we will explore many of the applications to scientific fields. We will also cover the essential mathematical applications: solving equations, numerical methods, calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, modular arithmetic, and much more. While doing so, we will cover the essential features of the Wolfram Language, the language that lies at the heart of Mathematica, Wolfram | One, and other products from Wolfram.
This video is an overview - a tour of some of its capabilities, to give you a feel for the incredible power of this tool. You may be surprised by Mathematica’s flexibility and precision.
No prior programming experience is needed! Perfect for beginners.
Symbolic calculation is at the heart of Mathematica, and this video will help you start to feel comfortable with this kind of work. We will introduce just a handful of built-in functions, to illustrate how many diverse applications you can expect to find.
We will also touch on the Wolfram Knowledgebase and the Wolfram Language. Keep in mind, this is just a quick tour - many more detailed lessons to come!

Why is it so easy to break promises to yourself? You tell yourself you’re going to study hard and get good grades, and within a couple weeks you’ve slid back into all your old bad habits. We’ve all been there. Socratica Friends, it’s time to adopt some good study habits FOR REAL this time.
We think part of the problem is - you expect yourself to be PERFECT! Instead, let’s focus on what is reasonable for all good students. In this video, we’ll talk about what are the 12 (ish) BEST study habits to adopt - always with an eye on what is actually do-able. We say “12-ish” because there are a few extra tips thrown in here and there. You’ll see!
If you have other tips you’d like to share about how to get good grades in high school, college, or grad school, PLEASE add them in the comments! We all can learn from each other’s experiences.

In Python, special methods are those "odd looking" methods that start and end with underscores. They let you override operators, intercept the setting and getting of attributes, customize object serialization, and much more. In this lesson we talk about the idea behind special methods and attributes, how to implement them, and give many examples along the way!
Some of the special methods & attributes we will cover include:
__init__
__doc__
__setattr__
__str__
__getattr__
__getattribute__
