NOTES/DISCLAIMER:
It's important that we all understand, that as Autistic People, there is not a unified autistic experience. We all have different opinions and very different experience, and I think it's great to share those things.
If you're a NeuroTypical watching, remember that this is just my experience as a NeuroDivergent Person.
Hopefully, this video will inspire other NeuroDivergent People to share their experiences and how they relate, and maybe even do not, in the comments below.
I encourage you to listen to and read as many Autistic experiences as possible to best understand Autistic People.
I would LOVE to see more Autism vlogs by #ActuallyAutistic People.

I'm Autistic, and I'm also ADHD (combined presentation). I have two NeuroTypes (or brain types) that are often at odds with one another (but also so similar it can be hard to tell the two apart).
This difficulty in sorting out these two NeuroTypes has given birth to a term, AuDHD (shorthand for Autistic and ADHD), which is often used to describe the unique experience of being both Autistic and ADHD simultaneously.
Today I'm BACK with my second long-format-video-essay of 2024!

On travel days we do a lot of location scouting, driving from place to place, trying to find a site with good enough cellular internet for Lyric (me) to work.
David does the driving... long hours... David has the hardest job on travel days.
David also shoots videos (so do I).
David put this video together to share with you all.
Would you like to see more of David's videography?

Griffin Memorial was originally a girl's school in the late 1890s. However, in 1895, it was bought up by the Oklahoma Sanitarium Company and turned into a mental asylum.
In 1915, the state of Oklahoma bought the Oklahoma Sanitarium Company and continued to run this asylum through the 1960s, when it was slowly decommissioned building by building. These buildings, where people received horrific treatment, are still standing today.
I can't help but think of all the NeuroDivergent People who were locked here against their will over the years, and the cruelty they faced, including those who were later found in a mass grave on the property.
Transcript of this video will be available on my website NeuroDivergentRebel.com

So I ask a lot of questions, hoping that many of you will share your experiences as well. In the new year, I'm hoping to start interviewing other NeuroDivergent voices in the community.

There are a lot of obstacles that Autistic and NeuroDivergent People face, from sensory challenges, communication challenges, and misunderstandings with NeuroTypical people, and sometimes even other Autistic and NeuroDivergent People. There's also the challenge of not having people respect and understand the way you process information.
With all of these obstacles that NeuroDivergent People face in the world, for many of us, one of the biggest obstacles that we can face, unfortunately, is often going to be the attitudes that other people have about NeuroDivergent People and NeuroDivergent traits.

Now that we've got that very formal medical definition out of the way, let's humanize this concept for a minute.
Let's talk about executive functioning. It's like you have a little executive in your head and they are organizing all of the things that you need to do in the day. If your executive is not functioning the way you need it to get things done, it can cause problems in your life
For example, the executive function is what helps control your ability to get into action, and start doing a task, or to stop yourself from impulsively acting on a task. Executive functioning is also the mental skill that is required in order to plan your tasks and activities and for thinking up the ideas in order of which you're going to do things.
ID: Lyric, a pale skinned nonbinary person with short green, teal, and blue hair with shaved sides and jet black roots is sitting in an RV with dark wood panel walls. They The words "Executive Functioning" floats in front of them in pale teal and green letters.

Hi everybody, welcome back, and for those of you who are new, my name is Lyric, pronouns they them. Some of you may also know me as the NeuroDivergent Rebel.
I am a late discovered Autistic adult, and I talk a lot about my experiences of finding out I was Autistic when I was already almost 30.
A big part of my own, personal, Autistic discovery, and learning I was Autistic late in life, was Autistic burnout.
Unfortunately, many Autistic People, often reach crisis point before we will find out we are Autistic.
For me, my life was spent in an endless cycle of Autistic burnouts, starting from a young age, when I was in school, and continuing into the adulthood, until I was diagnosed Autistic at the age of 29.
So. . . yay, Autistic burnout!!! It is a topic I am very intimately familiar with, unfortunately, and it is taken six years, to recover from my most recent Autistic burnout.
I'm gonna share about that in great detail. If you'd like to know more, please do stay tuned.

It's important that we all understand, that as Autistic People, there is not a unified autistic experience. We all have different opinions and very different experience, and I think it's great to share those things.
If you're a NeuroTypical watching, remember that this is just my experience as a NeuroDivergent Person.
Hopefully, this video will inspire other NeuroDivergent People to share their experiences as well, how they relate, and maybe even do not relate in the comments below.
I encourage you to listen to, and read, as many Autistic experiences as possible to best understand Autistic People.

There is emotional energy, when you get really excited, happy, angry, or scared, energy rises in your body... or if you are feeling down and depressed, you may have energy drained out of your body. Those are emotional energy fields.
There is also sensory energy. For example, when I feel sensory overload, my brain feels like electric static is erupting out of it, and I have way too much electric current flowing through my body, and I need to slow that pulsing energy field down to stop the sensory overload.
There's emotional energy, and there's sensory energy... as an Autistic ADHDer, there is also inertia, Autistic Inertia, or just the struggle to get energy moving, and slow energy down, once it is moving.
As an Autistic Person, with the Autistic Inertia, and as an ADHDer, I struggle to get myself going in the morning, struggle to get myself started, but then also struggling to stop myself, once I get going.
Stay tuned for more!

I went a large portion of my life, falsely, believing I was a NeuroTypical. Because I did not have the autism or ADHD labels for myself growing up, other labels were put on me as a young person: "stubborn rebellious, difficult hyperactive, poor self-control, someone who doesn't apply themselves".
All of these were put on me because nobody knew that I was NeuroDivergent, and, in a lot of ways, my NeuroDivergence was punished growing up.
If you'd like to know the ways in which my NeuroDivergent traits were punished, please do stay tuned.

Something else that's incredibly important, for me, as an Autistic Person, and my relationships with other people, is:
I need people in my life to be willing to accept me for the whole person, my strengths, my weaknesses, all of my identities, my Autistic traits, my me being a Queer Person. All of these things have to be okay.
The people in my life can't be people who need for me to put parts of myself away, when I'm around them.

Some of the meanest, and cruelest, things that were done to me, as a young person, by other young people, were people tricking me into doing things, because I thought they were my friends, but really they were trying to trick me into doing things that would get me in trouble, or that would amuse them.
When I was very young, I didn't understand, yet, that people would sometimes act like you're friends, to get you into trouble.

As an Autistic Person, I find that my brain is constantly processing a lot of information on overdrive. I don't tend to have filters that allow me to filter out distractions and background noise and other sensory things.
Right now, there are crows cackling loudly, and that is really making it hard for me to think, for example. I also hear this fan, that I don't even know if you can hear, just constantly humming right next to me. All of these little things, on top of my mind, that aren't tuned down. They're not put into the background.
Because all of this is coming at me all at once, sometimes my brain just can't handle it, gets stuck, and shuts down.
When this happens, to the average onlooker, I may appear out of it, or disoriented, or agitated, or frustrated. I might be "short", and give really short responses, and answers to things, as my brain stops being able to work as effectively as it normally would.
On the inside, I start to feel a bit disoriented, so yes, I am making short answers, and I'm aggravated. It becomes harder for me to concentrate, or find the words, when I start to become overloaded.

I like to describe this as, either a music, or a DJ sound controller board, because in my head a lot of things are related to music.
If we have this little sound controller board, that has all these little slider knobs that go up and down, up and down, up and down. We could place all of the senses on this slider.
Each person will have their own board. We have sound, sight, touch, taste, balance, being able to feel where your body is in space. Things like that, are all on unique sliders.
You can take any of these knobs and slide them, up to where they are more intense, or down to where they are less intense.
People who have sensory processing differences, Autistic People, NeuroDivergent People, and some others, are gonna have those slider knobs to where they are out in the extreme ends of being more sensitive, or less sensitive, to the given stimuli.
Whereas people who are considered, air quotes, "sensory average", NeuroTypical, those who do not have sensory processing differences, are gonna be more in this middle average, to where sensory things tend to be less distressing to them.
That's not to say that people who don't have sensory processing differences won't have particular sensory experiences that they do find overwhelming,

Hopefully, this video will inspire other NeuroDivergent People to share their experiences as well, how they relate, and maybe even do not relate in the comments below.
I encourage you to listen to, and read, as many Autistic experiences as possible to best understand Autistic People.
I would LOVE to see more Autism vlogs by #ActuallyAutistic People.

NeuroDivergent masking is when a NeuroDivergent Person, either consciously or subconsciously, camouflages, or masks, their divergent traits in order to blend in or to appear NeuroTypical.
Now, when we talk about masking for NeuroDivergent People, whether that's Autistic People, ADHD, Dyslexia, any other neurodevelopmental difference, it's important to understand that this camouflaging, this blending in, this masking, is something that many of us do in self-defense. It can be a subconscious thing. Some of us are not even aware we are doing it.
It's something we do for safety and self-preservation. It's a survival skill that can be harmful to those of us who adapt this survival skill. However, being able to blend in, and being able to be invisible, in a society that can be unfriendly, and even hostile, to those whose minds work differently, is something that we do to be safe. It's not intended to be a manipulative or deceptive bait and switch.
The thing about masking, as a NeuroDivergent Person is: I learned to mask, even though I didn't know, I was NeuroDivergent. I learned to mask, even though I wasn't in any formal NeuroDivergent Conversion Therapy type of a program. I learned to mask, because not having an autism diagnosis and a label growing up, meant a lot of the Autistic struggles I had were labeled as behavioral problems and punished.

Sometimes things that I will encounter, in the sensory environment, such as bright lighting, certain types of smells, sounds, and physical sensations on my skin, can literally trigger my fight, flight, or flee response.
Most often the first response to a sensory overwhelm, for me, is to run, "Get away!"

People talk a lot about Autistic meltdowns, I think, because they are noticeable and can be more of an air quotes, "inconvenience on other people".
A lot of people, who are not Autistic, might not understand what it's like to shut down, as an Autistic Person, so I wanted to share that with you today.

Talking about the triad of impairments this week: the triad of impairments is social impairment, language and communication impairments, rigidity of thought and behavior.
I would like to counter and add that this is very limiting, because it misses two major impairments that I feel contribute to all of the first three: sensory processing differences, because that can be an impairment on social, language, and communication as well as motor control, because that has a big impact on our language and communication as well.

"Stimming is defined as" - I'm reading off of Wikipedia today - "self stimulatory behavior."
That's sounds really dirty, first of all... and it's not typically "that" - what you might be thinking when you read that.... although I don't see why it couldn't be "that". Let me continue to read the definition. I think you'll understand what I mean by "that" as I dive in.
"Also known as stimming and self stimulation, it is the repetition of physical movements, sounds words, or moving objects. Such behaviors" - ewwe - "scientifically known as stereotypies, are found to some degree in all people, especially those with developmental disabilities and are especially frequent in autistic people. People diagnosed with sensory processing disorder are also known to potentially exhibit stimming behaviors."

I was one and a half years old when my family discovered that I had been teaching myself to read.
From the backseat of the family pickup truck on a road trip, I sat with a map unfolded across my small lap. The map was larger than me, and I sat reading the names of cities on the map.
Once I had exhausted the names I could pronounce, I then began reading street signs that were passing as we drove down the road. You can imagine the shock, awe, and surprise, of the adults who had no idea that I, at the age of one and a half, could even read.
"Wow. That's so strange. I didn't know they could do that!"
What IS hyperlexia, and what does having this brain language processing difference mean for those who are hyperlexic?
I'm a hyperlexical Autistic, and this week I am going to be sharing my experience with hyperlexia, what hyperlexia is, and what that means for those of us who are hyperlexic.

I'm an Autistic adult, but I didn't find out I was Autistic until I was 29 years old.
Throughout my entire life, even before knowing I was Autistic, I have experienced Autistic meltdowns, shutdowns, and other types of overload and overwhelm.
Since finding out I'm Autistic, one of the most important things, that has transformational in my own life, has been learning to recognize meltdowns, shutdowns, and other types of overload, as they're happening, before they happen, before I get to the point of no return.
This week, I'm going to be talking about Autistic meltdowns, and how to recognize Autistic meltdowns, and some signs of Autistic meltdowns, so that hopefully you can learn to predict them, and notice when they're happening, so that you can stop the meltdown, or get to someplace safe before it's too late if you or someone you care about is having a meltdown.

The report was compiled by the psychologist that diagnosed me, based on interviewing myself, one of my guardians, and two of my childhood friends - one who knew me from the time I was in preschool on, and literally lived next door to me, and another childhood friend who knew me from high school, and is still currently a friend of mine, and knew me in both the educational and an adult workplace setting.
There were three people that knew me in various contexts of my life, over multiple areas of my life, that were able to share how I was growing up, as a teenager, as an adult, and as a child. There were also childhood videos of me that were reviewed by the professional who diagnosed me.
Because the autism diagnostic criteria is very much based on childhood presentations of autism, and how we are as children, they are looking to verify that you've always been Autistic, because Autistic People will always be Autistic.
We will be born Autistic. We will be Autistic our entire lives, and we will still be autistic until the day we no longer breathe on this earth. That, that is why they had people who knew me throughout my lifetime as part of the evaluation.
I also did fill out questionnaires, which were:
The Mental Status Exam, the Adult Asperger Assessment, the Social Responsiveness Scale, SRS-2, Burns Depression Inventory, and Burns Anxiety Inventory. Those used to compile this diagnostic report.

Hey everyone, welcome back, Lyric here, and this week I wanted to talk about the diagnostic criteria for autism, and the way autism is defined.
In this current time in space, in history, autism is defined, primarily, through medical contexts, and we are defined by a book, the diagnostic and statistical manual, for diagnoses... and in other parts of the world is the ICD. This book, these books, these medical manuals, that they use to, literally, define, describe, and gatekeep the diagnosis for Autistic People, is very limiting, for a lot of reasons.
Eventually, I feel, that autism is going to have to be redefined, or re-described, and if you would like to know more, please do stay tuned.

I didn't find out I was Autistic until I was 29, and my ADHD wasn't diagnosed until several years later, however, autism and ADHD are both lifelong neurodevelopmental differences.
This means I was Autistic and ADHD my entire life, growing up, as a child, and I will be Autistic ADHD, my brain will be the same, the day I die.
There were obvious manifestations of my brain difference as a child growing up, many of which were labeled as "behavioral problems" and dismissed, or I was constantly scolded for acting in a very Autistic ADHD way.
If you want to know some of the things I got in trouble for as a kid, please stay tuned.

Hi, welcome back, if you're a returning viewer... and if you're new, welcome.
My name is Lyric. My pronouns are they/them. I am also known online as the NeuroDivergent Rebel. I am Autistic, ADHD, non-binary, pansexual, polyamorous, and an openly queer, openly NeuroDivergent human.
This week I'm going to be sharing about one of my topics of interest, the LGBTQIA plus human rights history, and important events along that timeline, as well as the NeuroDiversity history and timeline, and where some of these things intersect and overlap with one another.
As I mentioned last week: According to one study that included 641,860 people: "people who do not identify with the sex they were assigned at birth are three to six times more likely to be autistic as cis-gender people." (nature.com/articles/s41467-020-17794-1)
Gender is a social construct and a social identity. Someone's gender is determined by how they feel. An individual can feel more like a man, more like a woman, they can also feel like both, neither, or something in between.
I am a nonbinary, Autistic, who uses they/them pronouns. I do not consider myself man or woman. I am someone in between.
For me, personally, being Autistic impacts every part of my experience, and who I am as a person. That includes my attractions to other people, who I like, the attractions to interests, and hobbies, and passions I have, and my experience of gender.

According to one study that included 641,860 people: "people who do not identify with the sex they were assigned at birth are three to six times more likely to be autistic as cis-gender people." (nature.com/articles/s41467-020-17794-1)

Um, of course... I am a multifaceted human being with multiple intersectional identities. In addition to being Autistic, I am a queer person. I am non-binary, specifically gender fluid.
I am pansexual, someone who is attracted to people regardless of gender. Gender is a very little consideration to my attractions. I am also polyamorous, nonmonogamous, and monogamy has never made sense to me.
These things, that society tends to value in heteronormative culture, are ways that I have been told I am wrong throughout most of my life... or that the way I experience my gender identity and my orientation, and my attractions to other human beings, is wrong, much like being told, being ADHD and Autistic is wrong.
This month I'm going to talk a bit about Pride and Queer Pride, and why this is so important to those of us who fall under the LGBTQIA plus umbrella.

As an Autistic Person, I think it is very important that we talk about Autistic people in a balanced way. Currently, most people, when they hear "autism", they only think of all of the hard parts. So I spend a lot of time talking about the, not so hard things, and the lighter side of the Autistic experience, but I want to make sure that I am still being balanced, because we are a combination of both our strengths and our weaknesses, just like every other human being on the planet is.
