Unfortunately, it turned out that our bananas were infected with the tibagnol disease. Our workers suggested that treatment with salt and chlorine, regular cleaning of the dry leaves and removing the banana blossom from the bunch of bananas would eventually get rid of the disease. We've hired two local guys to do the smoking and they have a bit of experience doing it. Sadly, the majority in our area are using chemicals on their mango trees. We are hoping to get a positive result from the smoking and be able to share our knowledge to the locals here.

Usually, it's my family who does all the work, such as hiring workers to gather the coconuts, husking the coconuts, removing and cooking the coconut meat, and organising the sale of the copra meat. Unfortunately, my family was not around for a while and the copras were sitting for quite a long time and needed to be sold quickly or else it will keep on shrinking and we'd lose a lot of money. It was our first experience to do most of the tasks and to sell the copras. Though we lost about 180 kilograms by the time we sold them, we still made some good money.

The previous owner abused the trees with three crops a year using conventional chemicals. After we learned about permaculture, our aim now is to use only organic methods. We already use the permaculture techniques of swales to capture the rain water, using animal manures, grass and leaves for fertiliser. Finally, after we decided to stay at the farm for good, one of our goals is to get a good crop from mangoes as they are high value. In order to achieve that, the trees need to be pruned to let the them breathe and allow sunlight to enter into the centre of the tree. I was amazed how the filipinos prune the trees, barefoot and with no safety gear.
