The frame is infilled with 10 cm of wood-fiber insulation and clad with wooden boards. The front of the gates was charred using the Shou Sugi Ban technique and treated with pine tar. Our guild’s carpenters Tom Schotman and Oskars Elferts built the gates in three weeks.The architectural blacksmithing was finished in two months by Sören Uhlmann, Tomáš Nosek, Ewan Spooner and Luca Colace.The hand-forged steel components weigh approximately 400 kg (880 lbs).The total weight of the gates is around 1 tonne (2200lbs).

The time for this to happen comes now closer. In the past we had no good location or setup to host courses. Four years ago an old friend of the guild has joined us here in Latvia. He traveled for seven years around the world to gather knowledge from many countries in the blacksmithing craft. The last three years Sören has been busy to build a workshop that shall be the future centre for courses and also for him to create custom tools and swords. This forge was only possible to build due to a big support of friends and colleagues, that have formed a solid force to bring that project to life. The plan is to finish the forge this year, since it's so close to finalisation. Windows have to be set in place, machines brought in and some more purchased, as well as restored. Forging the Northmen Hunters Hatchet Northmen 2024-09-10 | We’re announcing new lineup of axe models crafted by the Northmen Guild’s master craftsmen and craftswomen - custom made axes that will be offered as ready to ship products on our website. These axes will be offered on average once a month in a limited number. There are two new hatchet models - Ranger’s Hatchet and Hunter’s Hatchet; the classic large American Felling Axe and the versatile Northlander Forest Axe. These axes are designed and made by the Northmen Guild's master bladesmith Mr. Liepins. The axes are hand-forged from a solid piece of high-quality tool steel AISI 1066 (65G). This is the main difference between our axes. This new solid steel technique allows for a more consistent results and longer edge life when sharpening the blade through years. The axe handles are made from European Ash and are soaked in a special tung oil mixture. The axes have black leather sheaths made from full grain leather that we source from a local tannery. Another novelty is that each axe will have its own unique serial number on the back side of the handle. Also the names of the master craftsmen and craftswomen who made the specific axe plus the month and year of birth when the axe was crafted are engraved below the serial number.We’re also now offering custom engravings on the axe handles. Making Zero Concrete Stone Foundation Northmen 2020-11-02 | Building stone/granite foundation for our wood workshop with the help of our friends. The ground/base layer was done by 7 men in one day from 9AM - 6PM. From digging out the trenches down to 1.5 meters deep (below freezing level). Then filling them with larger stones at the bottom and then layer with silica sand, and then another layer of stones, sand and water - to compress the sand and fill all the gaps between the stones until reaching the ground level. The top layer was masoned from split recycled stones (from an abandoned building) using traditional lime and rye flour mortar.

He then cut several spots around the tree up to the branches. The tree had to stand all over the summer and autumn,so in the deep and cold winter, by the last days of waning moon, when the its disc is empty he took down the pines. Japanese Carpentry Scarf Joint Kanawa Tsugi 金輪継 Test Fit Northmen 2019-05-19 | Joining together two massive 7 and 5 meters long larch beams that has Japanese scarf joint Kanawa Tsugi in between them. Using this joint the two joined members have very high structural strength it is positioned parallel the grain instead of perpendicular as it is common in European carpentry. These joints have been cut using Japanese hand tools - ryoba saws, kanna planes and nomi chisels. It takes about 5 hours for experienced carpenter to make this joint on both members. This joint is also common in Europe and in French carpentry it is called the "french lock" or "Trait de jupiter de menuisier" in french. It is hard to say where this joint was originally designed and engineered - in Europe or in Asia/Japan....

Sharpening Old W.Marples & Sons Chisel Northmen 2019-03-31 | Short movie showing process of sharpening an old Marples & Sons beveled paring chisel. The steel in those (old Sheffield) chisels are unique quality. Name "Cast Steel" on old Sheffield chisels refers to steel made by the crucible cast steel method, invented in Sheffield around 1740 by Benjamin Huntsman (1707-1776), a clock maker from Doncaster.Huntsman's experiments in crucible steelmaking began in 1740 and over the next two years he developed the simple method of purifying Blister steel by letting it in clay crucible pots. Blister steel had many imperfections and Huntsman wanted to create a better quality steel for his clock parts.Benjamin Huntsman was a clockmaker in search of a better steel for clock springs. In Handsworth near Sheffield, he began producing steel in 1740 after years of experimenting in secret. Huntsman's system used a coke-fired furnace capable of reaching 1,600 °C, into which up to twelve clay crucibles, each capable of holding about 15 kg of iron, were placed. When the crucibles or "pots" were white-hot, they were charged with lumps of blister steel, an alloy of iron and carbon produced by the cementation process, and a flux to help remove impurities. The pots were removed after about 3 hours in the furnace, impurities in the form of slag skimmed off, and the molten steel poured into moulds to end up as cast ingots. Complete melting of the steel produced a highly uniform crystal structure upon cooling, which gave the metal increased tensile strength and hardness compared to other steels being made at the time.Huntsman's process was the first to produce a fully homogeneous steel. Unlike previous methods of steel production, the Huntsman process was the first to fully melt the steel, allowing the full diffusion of carbon throughout the liquid. With the use of fluxes it also allowed the removal of most impurities, producing the first steel of modern quality. Due to carbon's high melting point (nearly triple that of steel) and its tendency to oxidize (burn) at high temperatures, it cannot usually be added directly to molten steel. However, by adding wrought iron or pig iron, allowing it to dissolve into the liquid, the carbon content could be carefully regulated (in a way similar to Asian crucible-steels but without the stark inhomogeneities indicative of those steels). Another benefit was that it allowed other elements to be alloyed with the steel. Huntsman was one of the first to begin experimenting with the addition of alloying agents like manganese to help remove impurities such as oxygen from the steel. His process was later used by many others, such as Robert Hadfield and Robert Forester Mushet, to produce the first alloy steels like mangalloy, high-speed steel, and stainless steel.

Our aim was to visit a museum and to see a log cabin that was built in 1988 and all the building process was documented in the movie you can see on our channel.Cabin is located in Lyytikkälä Suomenniemi Mikkeli, Finland.Unfortunately during the winter season all of the buildings were closed and we will need to return back to there in Summer to see the cabin from inside.
