Julia Olson | Changemaker Ideas: Childrens Rights and Climate Change New York Times Events 2024-09-27 | Julia Olson is the founder and executive director of Our Children’s Trust. She founded the organization in 2010 to support young people asserting their constitutional rights to a safe and livable climate. Last summer, the organization supported the plaintiffs in Held v. State of Montana, the first children’s constitutional climate trial. In the case, 16 young people argued that the government had violated their right to a safe and livable climate, by enabling rampant development of fossil fuels, contributing to climate change and polluting the state. The case resulted in a landmark win for the plaintiffs.In June 2024, with Navahine v. Hawai‘i Department of Transportation, Our Children’s Trust achieved the first settlement agreement of a youth-led constitutional climate case directed at stopping pollution from a transportation system. Today, as co-executive director and chief legal counsel, Olson directs the organization’s legal strategy and serves as lead counsel on two federal cases, Juliana v. United States and Genesis v. EPA. Olson has received numerous awards including the Kerry Rydberg Award for Environmental Activism in 2017, Rose-Walters Prize for Global Activism in 2018, the Katharine & George Alexander Law Prize in 2022 and Berkeley Law’s Environmental Leadership Award in 2024. In 2023, TIME100Climate called Olson one of the world’s most influential leaders driving climate action.
