To determine when it is time to replace them, you’ll want to follow the three Ds: dirty, damaged, or difficult to breathe through. If it is dirty, or caked in dust and debris, you should replace it with a new respirator. If it is damaged by a tear, a hole in the filter media, or a broken strap, throw it out. If it becomes difficult to breathe through as particles are collected by the filter media, it’s time for a new respirator. There isn’t any time limit on how long disposable respirators last — unless they are being used in oily mist environments. Then, an R-Series has a time limit of 8 hours, and a P-Series has a time limit of 40 hours or 30 days, whichever occurs first. Of course, throw it out if one of the three Ds is met before that.
Most disposable respirators also have a limited shelf life. If a disposable respirator has not been used within its allotted shelf life, it should be discarded. The longer a disposable respirator is stored beyond its shelf life, or stored outside the recommended conditions, the less likely it is to perform at its full potential. Check for the use-by-date on the packaging to determine shelf life. Reusable 3M™ respirator cartridges and filters need to be replaced at the end of their service life. For particulate filters, follow the three Ds just like with disposable respirators. The service life of gas and vapor cartridges, however, is more complicated and is affected by many factors. This includes the contaminant, its concentration, your breathing rate, the humidity level, the temperature, and other use conditions. Because of this, a change schedule must be established. You can establish this by using the 3M™ Service Life Calculator which helps you explore cartridges and select the one that is right for you.How Reusable Respirators Work and Common Mistakes to Avoid3M2024-05-14 | While disposable respirators are primarily used for airborne particles, reusable respirators are more versatile. With the right cartridges or filters, they may help filter out not only particles, but also gases, vapors, or any combinations of these airborne hazards. Reusable respirators consist of a face piece, adjustable head harness, neck strap, and a filter or cartridge. When fit-tested and worn properly, the face piece forms a tight seal to the face helping prevent contaminated air from leaking in and around the face seal. Inhaled air is drawn in through the cartridges or filters where the contaminants are filtered helping provide cleaner air to the wearer. Exhaled air is then released through a one-way valve called an exhalation valve.
Which cartridge or filter you attach to the face piece will depend on the airborne hazard. However, even if you have the proper cartridges or filters attached to a face piece, there are some common mistakes that you can avoid: #1 is not obtaining a proper fit. By not achieving a proper seal around the face, contaminated air could leak in around the edges, reducing the respirator's effectiveness. Mistake #2: Not making sure that the cartridge or filter is fitted securely and properly oriented on the face piece. Mistake #3: Not replacing the cartridge or filter when needed. To maintain respirator effectiveness, cartridges and filters must be replaced by the end of their service life. Mistake #4: Not using a prefilter when needed, or assuming the cartridge alone will filter particles. Cartridges are designed to absorb chemicals in the air; they are not made with filtering media to filter particulates. Be sure to determine if you will need a particulate prefilter specifically designed to filter out particles in the air. Mistake #5: The final mistake to avoid is not maintaining good hygiene of the product. Regularly cleaning and disinfecting the respirator facepiece and its plastic components is essential, especially if used frequently.Things to Know About Selecting and Using Reusable Respirators3M2024-05-14 | Before choosing any type of reusable respirator, you must perform a hazard assessment to ensure you are selecting the right product for the application. To ensure its effectiveness, your respirator must fit properly. Before respirator selection you must get fit-tested to confirm the respirator seals to your face and is comfortable to wear. Reusable respirators can be more cost-effective over time than using disposable respirators because the face piece can be reused, while only the filters and cartridges need to be replaced. When you select a 3M™ respirator with a universal cartridge and filter attachment system, you can simply change the cartridges or filters based on the job environment, rather than the entire face piece.
There are two main types of reusable respirators: half face piece and full face piece. When using a 3M™ half face respirator, you want to make sure it is compatible with your protective eyewear. Eyewear should never be under the straps of your respirator because it could impact the seal of the face piece. Wearing a 3M™ full face respirator helps provide a wide field of view, more facial coverage, and you won’t need to wear any additional eye protection. Reusable respirators do require regular cleaning and maintenance after each use. The clean respirator should be stored away from contaminated areas. When choosing a reusable respirator, selecting a reputable brand with wide distribution and a variety of replacement cartridges and filters is important. Can I Wear a Respirator with a Beard?3M2024-05-14 | If you want a respirator to provide its full protective benefits and work properly, it cannot be worn with a beard or facial hair. Disposable and reusable respirators must seal tightly to the face so that air entering the facepiece is forced through the filter or cartridge, thereby filtering airborne hazards from the air. If the seal to the face is not secure, air will go around the face seal rather than through the filter, as it takes the path of least resistance. That is why it is essential to ensure a proper seal when wearing a respirator. Facial hair such as beards, sideburns, or some mustaches can interfere with the seal of the respirator by creating gaps in the seal. These gaps allow air to leak into the respirator, reducing protection. A short mustache or goatee may be acceptable, but it must fit completely inside of the respirator.Respirator Fit: Why Is It So Important?3M2024-05-14 | Fit is critical for effectiveness. NIOSH approved respirators are designed to filter from 95% to 99.7% of the particulate hazards from the air that pass through them. How the respirator seals to the face is one of the most important aspects for its effectiveness to help filter particles out of the air. Half face respirators are designed to be tight-fitting, and it is crucial that the user has a good seal on the face before entering a contaminated area. Air will take the path of least resistance, so if a user does not get a proper seal between the respirator and the face, inhaled air and airborne hazards are more likely to travel through the gaps around the edges of the respirator, rather than through the filter.
To check for a proper seal: First, if you are an occupational user, you need to be fit-tested at least annually to help ensure you have selected the correct size respirator that seals to your face. Next, you will need to perform a user seal check prior to each use and before being exposed to the hazard. A user seal check will help determine if the respirator is being worn properly. To ensure you don’t break the seal, it is important that nothing comes between the edge of the respirator and the face. You need to be clean-shaven every time you wear a respirator, even a 5 o’clock shadow can break the seal. Finally, remember to look out for any other items that may interfere with the seal of the respirator.Understanding Respirator, Cartridge, and Filter Markings3M2024-05-14 | Respirators, cartridges, and filters have many markings, and it is important to understand each so you can choose the right ones for your application. An N95 is a rating for a disposable respirator or particulate filter that describes its filtration efficiency. It is based on an approval test performed by NIOSH: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The N95 rating is part of a NIOSH Matrix. There are three letters and three numbers; the letters N, R, and P designate how well the filter is resistant to oil-based particulates and mists. “N” means it is not intended for use in oil mist, “R” means it is resistant, and “P” means it is oil mist proof. The numbers 95%, 99%, and 100% tell us the filtering efficiency based off the NIOSH approved respirator test. NIOSH respirator ratings are only applicable for particulate filters. These ratings do not have anything to do with filtering chemicals odors.
While an N95 rating is useful for most types of dust and debris, a P100 respirator filter is useful for particles like lead and asbestos. A P100 is designated by pink, magenta, or purple color printing on the disposable respirator/filter. Cartridges for reusable respirators also have NIOSH approved markings. Rather than letters or numbers, the classification system uses color codes to designate which specific contaminants the cartridge can help filter out. These colors are standard in the industry and can be found on all cartridges, regardless of manufacturer. The colored labels will also list the contaminants in abbreviated form to further help identify which hazards the cartridge has been approved for. If your work environment contains more than one contaminant, you should always choose a cartridge and/or filter that is appropriate for all the contaminants. Refer to the packaging or user instructions to help identify the performance of each cartridge or filter.Disposable Respirators—7 Things to Consider When Choosing One3M2024-05-14 | It is important to know how to choose a 3M™ Respirator — and what to look for when you do. Breathability is important when choosing a disposable respirator. That is why 3M disposable respirators are engineered with proprietary Advanced Electrostatic Media (AEM). The air inside a respirator can get hot in certain applications, that is where an exhalation valve can help. For example, the 3M™ Cool Flow™ Valve Particulate 8511, an N95 Respirator, comes with the 3M™ Cool Flow Valve™ that opens as you breathe out. This helps release warm, exhaled air that could otherwise build-up in a non-valve respirator. Additionally, it helps direct exhaled air downward for easier breathing. Not all straps and headbands are created equal either. Be it material differences like rubber or elastic, or differences in adjustability, each have their pros and cons depending on your hairstyle and comfort preferences. Nose clips are a very important feature of disposable respirators since they can affect the seal and comfort on your nose and cheeks. If the nose clip isn’t comfortable, or doesn’t hold the shape well, you may not be able to get a proper seal around your nose. This could lead to the inhalation of particles through the gaps and potentially fog up safety eyewear.
The seal of the respirator over the nose area is critical, which is why some models of disposable respirators have nose foam to help provide cushion and comfort. If you are working on jobsites with nuisance odors, odors that do not exceed the OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL), a disposable respirator with a carbon layer may be the option for you. If you are working with odors higher than the Permissible Exposure Limit, you should consider a reusable respirator with appropriate cartridges. Disposable respirators come in two main styles: the traditional cup style respirator and flat fold respirators. An example of a flat fold disposable respirator is the 3M™ Aura™ Particulate Respirator 9205+. It's 3-panel flat fold design makes it more convenient to transport and store since it won’t get crushed like a cup style respirator might. This design also accommodates facial movements to help you work and talk comfortably. Its curved, low-profile design conforms well to nose and eye contours, allowing more room for eyewear. How To Choose a Respirator3M2024-05-14 | It is important to know how to choose a 3M™ Respirator — and what to look for when you do. A respirator is designed to help protect you from certain airborne hazards such as gases, vapors, dust, and debris. Knowing which types of airborne hazards you will be exposed to is the first step when choosing a 3M™ respirator. Understanding filtering capabilities between disposable and reusable respirators will further help you choose the proper respirator for the airborne hazards you may encounter. This training will focus on how to find which airborne hazards you may be exposed to and the differences between disposable and reusable respirators so that you understand how to choose the proper one for your application.Corrosion Prevention Sealing Tape 9143FR Application Video3M2024-05-13 | Shop Handling Features of Corrosion Prevention Sealing Tape, 9143FRIntroduction to 3M CEO Bill Brown3M2024-05-12 | Since joining 3M, chief executive officer Bill Brown has prioritized learning about how 3M innovates for our customers by getting a first-hand look at 3M’s research and development labs and manufacturing facilities.
