FIRST VISIT! Royal Canadian Air Force CC-330 Husky at Calgary Airport! (4K) Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-10-03 | Last week, the newest addition to the Royal Canadian Air Force fleet visited Calgary for the first time ever! The CC-330 Husky is the RCAF's version of the Airbus A330 MRTT, and will serve as both a strategic transport and tanker aircraft.These will replace Canada's existing fleet of 5 CC-150s, which is based on the older Airbus A310. In total, the RCAF is expected to take delivery of 9 CC-330s. 5 of those are used A330-200s, 4 of which will get converted to the MRTT standard at a later date, while the remaining 4 will be new-build A330MRTTs.The 5 used ones, including this plane, are all relatively new, originally delivered to Kuwait Airways in 2015. This one will be used as Canada's new VIP transport, and was delivered to the RCAF at the end of August. Since then, it's been busy flying around the country seemingly on various training and familiarization flights.It's great to finally see the CC-330 program come to life, and to see this one in the fantastic looking Government of Canada livery as well! FIRST VISIT! WestJet NEW LIVERY 737-700 at Calgary Airport! (4K) Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-09-27 | Over the past few weeks, WestJet has finally painted the first Boeing 737-700 in their new livery! Tail 225, C-GWJO, is also the first passenger 737NG to be repainted. It flew from Jacksonville, Florida to Toronto on September 25th, and then came to Calgary the next day.At this point, it's been well over 5 years since their new branding was unveiled, so this is genuinely really nice to see. That extended timeline was not necessarily all on WestJet though, since they had the MAX grounding and then 2020 basically back to back.Supposedly though, painting will finally be ramping up over the next few months, and I cannot wait to see more 737NGs flying around in this livery. FIRST VISIT! Air Canada Cargo 767 Freighter at Calgary Airport (4K) Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-09-06 | On September 3rd, one of Air Canada Cargo's Boeing 767 Freighters flew into Calgary for the first time ever! Although definitely not the first visit here for this particular airplane since it previously flew for Canadian, Air Canada and later, Rouge, it is the first time one of their converted 767s has been here.Back at the end of 2020, Air Canada announced that they'd convert a couple of their retired 767s to freighters given the demand for air cargo at the time. Since then, they're now up to 6 operating 767 Freighters, including two brand new ones! By extension, this is also the first time one of their 767s in the new livery has been here, which, I have to say, looks so sharp!This one was here bringing show jumping horses for the annual Spruce Meadows Masters event that takes place just south of Calgary. It arrived from Toronto on Sunday afternoon and then left about 3 hours later heading back there. It's worth mentioning that one of the 767s with winglets showed up the next day but unfortunately in darkness. Hopefully these won't be the only times we get to see these planes! 747 CARRYING A 787 ENGINE! National Airlines 747-400F at Calgary Airport Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-08-25 | On Thursday, August 24th, this Boeing 747-400 Freighter from National Airlines paid a visit to Calgary! It's not often we get to see 747s here in daylight, so this was a rare treat to see in some gorgeous evening sunlight.As for why it was here, well there was nothing officially said, but they did load a General Electric GEnx engine, the type used on WestJet's Boeing 787s. It seems one of their Dreamliners flew into London-Heathrow on Tuesday, but its return flight was cancelled and it hasn't flown since. Seeing as this 747 spent about 4 hours on the ground here before departing for Heathrow, too, well, you can draw your own conclusions from there.It was pretty cool to watch a big jet engine like that being loaded on a 747, which was no small undertaking. U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress SCREAMING Takeoff from Abbotsford Airport! Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-08-19 | This past weekend, the U.S. Air Force sent one of their B-52 Stratofortresses to the Abbotsford Airshow in British Columbia. The Abbotsford Airshow typically has a great line-up of aircraft on static display, and this was the first time a B-52 had been here in a couple of years. These jet bombers have been in service with the U.S. Air Force since 1955, and have been, quote, the backbone of the country's strategic bomber force.Powered by 8 Pratt and Whitney TF33 engines, these slightly newer B-52H models are the last variant still in service. This particular B-52 was built in the early 1960s and is based at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. It stayed on static display for all three days of the show and then left early on Monday morning heading back home. DELIVERY FLIGHT! Buffalo Airways 737-300 Landing and Up Close at Edmonton Airport (4K) Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-08-04 | On Thursday, August 3rd, Buffalo Airways took delivery of their very first jet aircraft - a Boeing 737-300 Freighter! This plane marks a huge new step for the company which is famous for their fleet of classic aircraft like the Douglas DC-3, Curtiss C-46, Lockheed Electra, and more. Based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Buffalo operates cargo and charter flights throughout the NWT and into Nunavut, as well as aerial firefighting.Now their cargo operation includes various contracts from UPS, FedEx, and DHL, but the majority of that freight actually comes from Buffalo’s in-house courier Buffalo Air Express.At the moment, most of that gets trucked from Edmonton up to Hay River and then flown into Yellowknife from there. The 737 will streamline that process significantly, and the plan is to fly it every weekday between Edmonton and Yellowknife to meet this demand for next-day freight to the North. The 737 acquisition was announced about a year and a half ago, and after a successful test flight a few weeks back, the plane was ferried from Bournemouth, UK to Edmonton. It’ll spend a few weeks here undergoing some avionics modifications before it gets its Canadian registration and enters service.Once it arrived in Edmonton though, the plane was greeted with this water cannon salute from the Edmonton International Airport, and then brought into North Cariboo Air's hangar and opened up to the public! MILITARY A321NEO! German Air Force Airbus A321LR at Calgary Airport (YYC) Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-08-01 | On Sunday evening, this German Air Force A321neo flew into Calgary International Airport! It stayed overnight and flew back the following afternoon to Germany, via Iceland.I don't know why they were here, but these sorts of military visitors are not uncommon throughout the summer in Calgary. What is unusual though is the fact that it's a military A321neo, specifically, the LR version! This one was officially delivered just over a year ago, and was apparently the first ever Airbus "neo" intended for military use. These will be used by the German Air Force for transport and medical evacuation flights, and they have two of these in the fleet as of now. Very cool to see this new plane in person! WORLDS LARGEST SINGLE-ENGINE BIPLANE! Antonov An-2 at Springbank Airport Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-07-23 | The Antonov An-2 is a Soviet-era utility biplane that was produced from the late 1940s all the way until 2001. Thanks to its rugged design, short takeoff and landing capability, and highly adaptable airframe, over 18,000 of these planes were built. That said, they're not a super common sight in North America.For the past couple of years though, two of these planes have been based out of Springbank Airport just west of Calgary. This is where the story gets interesting!Both of these planes are owned by a company called "2Solitude" (2solitude.com), which retrofits An-2s and turns them into, basically, flying RVs!One of them is privately operated and has a full interior with a kitchen and everything, sitting on the world's largest composite floats! The other one is a test bed for a turboprop conversion, swapping out the original radial engine for a Honeywell TPE331-12 turbine. This one too, will get its own set of floats eventually.The final result is, to paraphrase the company's website, "a bush plane that is your camp".On Saturday, the turbine one went up for a couple of circuits, and I took the opportunity to finally catch this rare Soviet biplane in action. I Flew on a Lynx Air... A320? Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-07-16 | For the last couple of weeks, you may have noticed this blue and green Airbus A320 operating out of Calgary International Airport. This plane belongs to a relatively new American charter airline, Global Crossing Airlines, also called GlobalX.Due to more 737 MAX delivery delays, much like last year, Lynx Air has wet leased this single Airbus A320 for the summer, exclusively for some of their US flights out of Calgary. RARE VISITOR! Egyptair Boeing 777-300ER at Calgary Airport (YYC) Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-07-14 | On Wednesday July 12th, this Egyptair 777-300ER flew into Calgary from Cairo! Yes, I did post a video of this very airplane recently in Edmonton, but it turned out there was another one of these refugee flights planned to come to Calgary about two weeks after that one.Egyptair is still an incredibly uncommon sight in Western Canada, and so it was definitely worth filming this rare 777 again, at home this time, and much closer up too! It arrived around 5AM on Wednesday and left around the same time on Thursday morning heading back to Egypt. MILITARY AIRPLANES ONLY! KC-135, A400M, C-17, C-130 at Halifax Stanfield (YHZ) Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-07-12 | Back at the start of June, quite a few interesting military aircraft paid a visit to Halifax Stanfield International Airport in Nova Scotia, Canada! This included up to 6 KC-135s from the U.S. Air Force, plus some other aircraft from the Royal Air Force and Italian Air Force too. The KC-135s were apparently doing a training exercise in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, but the others were likely just transiting through Halifax. Still very glad to have seen all of this action - this is the first time I've been able to film a KC-135 in flight!I happened to be there in early June doing some plane spotting, and compiled all of the military stuff I saw into this video! ATLANTIC CANADA PLANE SPOTTING! DIVERSION! Turkish Airlines 777-300ER Takeoff from Calgary Airport Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-06-29 | On June 28th, this Turkish Airlines 777-300ER diverted to Calgary while en route from Istanbul to San Francisco.Although Turkish does serve three Canadian destinations, those being Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, they are not an airline you'd ever expect to see in Calgary. This might be one of the first times they've been here.Unfortunately the diversion was due to a medical emergency on board, so I do hope everybody's alright. I Flew on Porters Embraer E2... from Western Canada! I Flew in Air Canadas 777 Business Class! I Flew on Canadian Norths Boeing 737-700! I Flew on a RARE Boeing 757-300! Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-05-21 | Back in September last year, I had some free time in Frankfurt between flights, and naturally went looking to see if there were any interesting planes I could fly on.Lo and behold, I found just that on one of Condor's many flights to Palma de Mallorca, Spain! RARE VISITOR! This visitor from 440 Squadron spent a few days at Calgary’s Springbank Airport, apparently giving some rides to Air Cadets.The RCAF only has 4 of these planes and they’re based out of Yellowknife for transport and search and rescue operations up north, so they're not a common sight here at all. Alberta Government WATER BOMBERS! Canadair CL-215Ts at Red Deer Regional Airport [4K] Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-04-16 | As winter wraps up, aerial firefighting contractors across Canada have been preparing for the upcoming fire season. At Red Deer Regional Airport, both Air Spray and Buffalo Airways in particular have been especially busy with training flights.However, one new sight this season are these Government of Alberta Canadair CL-215Ts. These amphibious firefighting planes were previously operated by Conair of B.C. on contract for Alberta.Back in February though, Air Spray was awarded that contract, and will operate these planes on behalf of the Government of Alberta for at least the next 10 years (airspray.com/news/air-spray-wins-alberta-aerial-firefighting-contract).I’ve never actually managed to catch one of these on the move, so was very glad to see these two CL-215Ts going up for a training flight the other day. FIRST FLIGHT! WestJet Cargo 737-800(BCF) Takeoff from Calgary Airport (4K) Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-04-03 | On April 3rd, one of WestJet's 737 Freighters flew for the very first time under a WestJet callsign, on a ferry flight over to Toronto.Three of these WestJet Cargo 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighters have been sitting in Calgary after being delivered almost a year ago. Unfortunately for them, they ran into some red tape with Transport Canada, and only officially received certification at the end of March. As reported by Freight Waves in November last year (freightwaves.com/news/boeing-certification-troubles-in-canada-ground-1st-westjet-freighters), because of the fraught relationship between Boeing and the FAA, and subsequently, Transport Canada, Boeing's conversion process has been scrutinized heavily. As a result, WestJet's cargo plans have been delayed by over 9 months at this point. Fortunately, that all seems to be resolved now, and the first revenue cargo flights for these planes are scheduled to start later this month. Good to finally see one of these on the move! RARE VISITOR! The NEW GULFSTREAM G700! Flight Test Aircraft Landing at Calgary Airport [4K] Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-03-03 | Yesterday, this Gulfstream G700 flight test aircraft from Gulfstream Aerospace flew into Calgary.The G700 is Gulfstream's largest private jet to date, and is a stretched version of the successful G650. The G700 is still awaiting certification, and this particular one was in Iqaluit for some cold weather testing.Strangely, it left Iqaluit and flew over to Fairbanks, but didn't actually descend, and "diverted" to Calgary instead.It ended up staying the night here and then left just before sunrise. No idea why it came to Calgary of all places, but I'm very glad to have seen this fantastic looking jet! 48-YEAR-OLD BOEING 737-200 STILL FLYING! Nolinor Aviation at Calgary Airport Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-02-19 | Last Friday, this Boeing 737-200 from Nolinor Aviation paid a visit to Calgary! They flew in from Vancouver and then departed for Regina, with Charlottetown as their final destination.I suspect it had cargo on board for the 2023 Canada Winter Games, which are happening this week in PEI.What’s even more interesting though is that this plane is one of the oldest 737s still flying in the world, at 48 years old!Sadly the 737-200s are not as common here as they used to be, and although we do have a few resident -200s, it’s always a treat to see one flying! NEW LIVERY! WestJet (Pacific Coastal) Saab 340B at Calgary Airport Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-02-15 | Almost 5 years after WestJet’s new livery was unveiled, the very first Saab 340 has finally been painted!This 29-year old turboprop, operated by Pacific Coastal on behalf of WestJet, had been in the States for some heavy maintenance since September, and flew back to Canada last week. It ferried from Vancouver to Calgary on Tuesday, and then went for a training flight the same day.Now, the new WestJet livery has been around for a while on the 737 MAXs, 787s, and WestJet Cargos, but this Saab is actually the very first plane to be painted that wasn’t a new addition to the fleet. In fairness to WestJet, the rebranding came at kind of an unlucky time for them in mid-2018. The 737 MAX grounding a few months later meant they needed every plane they had available (so no time for painting), and then the financial situation from 2020 onwards.That being said, they have yet to repaint a single 737NG or Dash 8, but now that the first repaint has finally taken place, here’s hoping the rest of the fleet will follow shortly! (4K) Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-01-29 | On January 27th, this Air Greenland Airbus A330 flew into Fort McMurray, Alberta, operating a charter flight for the Arctic Winter Games.The Arctic Winter Games are a multi-sport and cultural event for Indigenous peoples living around the Arctic Circle, and have been taking place every two years since 1970.This year, the Games are being held in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in Northeastern Alberta, with participants coming from as far away as northern Scandinavia and Greenland, hence this special flight to Fort McMurray.Now, Air Greenland and Fort McMurray are two things I never expected to say in the same sentence. They're one of the most unique airlines in the world, and their operation is fascinating.Air Greenland's A330 usually flies exclusively between Greenland and Denmark, so seeing it in Canada is an exceptionally rare event. Add Fort McMurray of all places into the mix, and you can see why I had to make the trip up from Calgary to see it!This is one of the largest aircraft to ever land in Fort McMurray, and a 7500 foot runway plus an A330 was bound to make for quite the interesting arrival. FAREWELL to Horizon Airs Dash 8-400s! 55-YEAR-OLD DC-9 STILL FLYING! Ameristar DC-9-15 at Calgary Airport (4K) Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-01-10 | Last week, this extremely rare Douglas DC-9 operated by Ameristar flew into Calgary on a special charter of some sort.This DC-9-15 is now 55 years old, and is actually a former Air Canada one too! It landed and taxied to Apron 6 where they cleared customs, got some fuel, and then started up again to pick up cargo on a different apron.However, it seemed there was a bit of a miscommunication somewhere, and the plane ended up taxiing around most of the airport before eventually finding its cargo back at Apron 6.If that wasn’t enough though, they had another 3 hour delay because of ATC issues at their destination of Las Vegas, so they waited as long as they could before the crew seemingly timed out. They stayed overnight and left the next morning for Great Falls instead.All of this at least led to us getting a few more angles of this iconic classic aircraft, and this was certainly a visit to remember. FAREWELL to the FedEx DC-10! ONE HOUR of MD-10s at Calgary Airport (4K) Alex Praglowski Aviation 2023-01-08 | From late August until the end of December, FedEx decided to switch their weekday flights between Memphis and Calgary, Canada, from the usual 767 Freighters to their McDonnell Douglas MD-10s!The MD-10 is essentially, the DC-10 but with a modernized 2-crew flight deck that's virtually identical to the MD-11. This conversion allows for some substantial cost savings, by allowing pilots to fly both the MD-10 and MD-11 with minimal extra training. From the outside though, it still looks and sounds exactly like the DC-10.Considering it had been over 7 years since Calgary last saw regular DC-10 flights, and that FedEx would reportedly be retiring them around the end of last year, this was an amazing opportunity for Calgary aviation enthusiasts.The DC-10 has been one of my personal favourite aircraft types for as long as I can remember, and so over that 4-month period, I took it upon myself to film as much of it as I could.Without further ado, please enjoy this hour-long-compilation of FedEx MD-10s at Calgary International Airport.
