Convert VHS: Do not use a (EZCAP) Capture Stick! @Cedimedi

Cedimedi Most capture sticks are very bad, check first if they are good.

Right video is recorded by EzCap Capture Stick + JVC VHS Player and FrameBlend Deinterlacing.
Left is recorded by Panasonic DMR + JVC VHS Player + Blackmagic Shuttle HDMI Capture and QTGMC Deinterlacing (50fps)
The audio switches a few times between the both recordings, it should be noticeable. The aspect ratio is not the same because i forgot to change the PAR of one clip.

More information about recording process:
The left recording is done by recording the HDMI signal from a Panasonic DMR, where the analog signal from the VHS Player is feed into the DMR. Every Panasonic DMR with an HDMI output should work. Those are mostly the silver ones. Personally i use an DMR-EH57.
The following describes the routing of all devices:
VHS Player - (S-Video or RCA cable) - Panasonic DMR - (HDMI cable) - HDMI Splitter - (HDMI cable) - Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle

An HDMI splitter is needed to remove the HDCP (copyright protection from HDMI) out of the HDMI stream. There are a lot of HDMI splitters, but not all support that feature (it is more of an bug than a feature). It is a bit of a lottery to find one that works, but check out some reviews or YT videos that suggest some.

The HDMI output settings from the DMR is set to 480i (NTSC) / 576i (PAL) and then recorded by the Blackmagic Shuttle on a PC. Do not directly connect the RCA / S-Video cable from the VCR to the Intensity Shuttle and record it, because the Analog-Digital converter of it is not that great. In the end, a uncompressed AVI file will be recorded. It is around 100GB/h

Rendering process:
The deinterlacing is done by QTGMC. AviSynth 2.6.0 is needed to run that plugin, also some extra AviSynth plugins are needed (http://avisynth.nl/index.php/QTGMC#Core_Plugins_and_scripts)
I did no other post-processing on this video other than QTGMC deinterlacing and cropping the overscan and adding some black bars over it again, so that the aspect ratio stays the same.

The script is then modifed to specify which video should be used. (Line 1)
It is then saved as an avs file and put into the software XMedia Recode. From here, you can finally render the video as H.264. I used constant quality with 16 to set the bitrate mode. It results in a bitrate of around 2000kbps - 10000kbps, which is plenty for VHS. As profile i would use the H.264 high profile and a slow preset. Do note that QTGMC is very slow and works only on one CPU core, so it will only render around 10 frames per second depending on your system. Also change the aspect ratio to 4:3, so that the pixel-aspect-ratio gets fixed. (can be found under the 5th tab in xmedia recode and then under 4:videosize)

As for the audio, i suggest to use FDK AAC with an bitrate of 320kbps. this is more than enough for vhs.

Thats pretty much everything, now it just needs to be rendered and thats it. Bear in mind that this explanation is very short and maybe not all steps are clearly explained. Feel free to comment to ask for some help or ask on forum.doom9.org

Also i would suggest to keep the uncompressed avi files for further editing in the future. It can be compressed lossless with the lagarith codec (use VirtualDub for this). The resulting files will be around 1/4 - 1/2 the size of the original uncompressed avi. So you will need a lot of diskspace.
