Conquering Mellbreak - The Toughest Way Possible! Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2024-04-21 | After watching a number of videos of Mellbreak and Hen Comb, I wondered why nobody seemed to climb it from the Buttermere side, always choosing to start their walk at Loweswater. I decided to find out why and parked at the National Trust car park at Buttermere to begin my days climbing. I soon discovered my error by making very slow progress, walking over very wet, and rocky terrain, covered in bracken, to eventually make my way up to Scales Force waterfall, which, after all the heavy rain, looked amazing. I was also treated to an incredible flight past by 6 fighter jets flying through the Buttermere Valley - the noise, the speed and the drama was unbelievable, as were the views I was getting all day. Starting the climb up to the first summit, Mellbreak I make another two errors; flying the drone and forgetting to remove the plastic camera cover and then accidentally recording as I put my GoPro in my down jacket, causing it to overheat and not work when I reached the summit. Uncovering Lindisfarnes Viking History: Exploring The Holy Island Of Northumberland Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2024-04-07 | A visit to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne on a gloriously sunny Easter Bank Holiday weekend, after pervious stops at Warkworth and Bamburgh Castles. The tide was going out as I crossed the causeway to Holy Island but I had to be back on the mainland before the returning tide cut the Island off at 16.00. I first visited the quiet side of the island and three deserted sandy bays, where the Vikings recorded their first ever raid, when they landed at the bays, then attacked and destroyed the Abbey, slaughtering all the monks. I then visit the 16th century Castle, before walking to the church and Abbey ruins where we see them from the ground and the air with footage from the drone. Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2024-03-31 | A perfect family short walk, starting from the Station Car Park at Richmond along the River Swale to Easby Abbey, which was built in 1152. We also look around the 12th Century St Agatha's Church, which stands beside the Abbey and holds a replica of the famous Easby Cross, with the original being on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The Easby Cross is said to be the finest example of Anglo Saxon sculpture ever found in the UK. Footage from the air and on the ground, shows what a magnificent Abbey Easby once was and still is today. Bowes Castle and Mill Gill Force - A Superb First Visit Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2024-03-03 | A first visit to Bowes Castle, which was built between 1171 and 1187 by King Henry II. The castle is situated on the old Roman Fort of 'Lavatris', meaning 'river bed' which was built in AD71, with both structures guarding the strategic position of the Stainmore Pass. Free parking in Bowes saw me first walk around the old 12th Century Church of St Giles, with its superb stained glass windows, before taking the short walk to the remains of Bowes Castle. A dry and misty day saw a great turn out of people who had all come to enjoy the Steam Punk weekend and what a great bunch of people they were too. I met and talked to quite a few on my walk down to the Pavilion, checking out the stalls , then walking down to West Cliff, on to the harbour and finally up to Whitby Abbey, which was looking very atmospheric in all the mist. Even a £50 parking ticket on my car when I got back could not spoil this brilliant day out. Orrest Head: Lake Districts Most Accessible Summit! Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2024-01-28 | Orrest head was the very first Fell that legendary walker Alfred Wainwright first climbed in 1930 and he immediately fell in love with walking and the Lake District. On a cold winters morning I followed in his footsteps to the summit viewpoint and also marvelled at the stunning view over Windermere and the surround Fells, just as the sun was rising. This is a perfect family friendly walk, with loads of benches where you can enjoy the perfect 'brew with a view' and if you follow the well marked blue 'Miles Without Styles' route to the top, it is also wheelchair friendly as well, making this the most easily accessible viewpoint in the whole of the Lake District, as well as offering one of the best views too! A Snowy Hike to Alcock Tarn from Grasmere Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2024-01-21 | A first ever climb up to Alcock Tarn, sitting just above Grasmere in the Lake District. Superb Lakeland winter conditions with about 4 inches of snow and -7C temperatures overnight, which made progress slow but scenery stunning, showing a full winter wonderland of views over Grasmere, the surrounding Fells, all the way down to Windermere. I chose the easy route up through the woods but missed the gate and ended up following the ‘Route from Hell’ and nearly making my childhood dreams of singing soprano a reality, when I had to climb over a steel gate, to get back onto the correct path again. Getting Lost in Hamsterley Forest Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2023-12-24 | Hiking the 'Three Becks Trail' in Co Durham's largest forest, Hamsterley Forest. This is the longest and the hardest of the different hiking trails in the forest and the walk itself is fantastic, rated as difficult with plenty of steep ups and downs and I really enjoyed it. What I did not enjoy was the poor signage, which was intermittently good but also very poor. At times the named walking trail signs were replaced by coloured directional arrow heads, which would have been fine, unless (like me) you are colour blind. Solo Hiking Wansfell Pike And Baystones From Ambleside Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2023-12-17 | Parking at Rydal Road car park in Ambleside, I walk the 1½ miles from behind the Salutation Hotel and follow the very quiet Stock Ghyll Lane, passing the waterfalls until I see the sign post for the first summit of the day Wansfell Pike. There begins a short (½ mile) but very steep climb up the stone steps to Wansfell Pike, which, despite it’s amazing views over Ambleside, Windermere and the Fairfield Horseshoe is not a Wainwright summit. The Horrific Story of The Richmond Drummer Boy Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2023-11-12 | The legend of the Richmond Drummer Boy is one of the most famous and horrific legends in the North of England. In the 18th century the sons of some soldiers followed their fathers into the army and enlisted as Drummer Boys between the age of 10 and 12 years old. Their job was to encourage the troops to fight by the beating of their drums and the troops stationed at Richmond Castle also had their own regimental Drummer Boy. There was a persistent rumour of an underground tunnel from Richmond Castle to Easby Abbey, about 1.5 miles away, which was a concern, as it may have compromised the security of the Castle so a search took place and a tunnel actually found but the entrance was very small. The Regimental Drummer Boy was called and told that he would have to go down the tunnel, with a candle and his drum, beating the drum as he went, so the soldiers above ground could listen and map a route to see if it did indeed lead to Easby Abbey. The drummer boy led the soldiers across the market square, down to the River Swale and on to Easby Wood, where all of a sudden the drumming stopped and the Richmond Drummer Boy was never seen again. RAVEN CRAG - The Best Way, The Scenic Way & The Safest Way! Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2023-10-22 | My first assent of Raven Crag on a glorious Autumnal day! I go up the old fire road, which (imo) is by far the best route to the summit. It is the most scenic route, the safest way to reach the top, although it is also a slightly longer route. Free parking on the A951 road, I walked the mile down the dam road to the base of Raven Crag on a cold, frosty morning, which saw the mist rising off Thirlmere to make a magical start to the days hiking. Walking passed the start of the steep route to the summit, I turn off the road to the 'fire road', which turned out to be a stunning and a lot more gentle walk to the summit. This route allowed me amazing views of Thirlmere and all the surrounding Fells and also the superb Autumn colours in all the trees as I walked through the forest. The view from the summit was stunning and apart from a lovely couple I met, I had the whole summit to myself - bliss! We stopped as a family of 5, two parents, two grandparents and a three year old child, for 5 nights on an all inclusive basis and I did a full and very comprehensive tour around the hotel, reviewing the bedrooms, rest areas, sun terraces, swimming pools and the hotels restaurants and snack bars. GREAT GABLE from Seathwaite Farm Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2023-09-10 | The best summit view in the whole of the Lake District - Great Gable, no matter which way you look, the views are stunning! I parked down at Seathwaite Farm and head up next to the waterfall to a brand new summit for me, Base Brown, before backtracking and climbing upwards to the second summit of the day Green Gable, offering stunning views over the Ennerdale and Buttermere Valleys. Descending down to Windy Gap, I begin the arduous climb up to the final summit of the day Great Gable, being met with awe-inspiring 360 summit views! The BEST Walk in the North York Moors Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2023-09-03 | My favorite walk in the North York Moors and in my opinion the best walk too! Parking in the pay and display car park at the foot of Roseberry Topping, I walk up the quiet country lane to Roseberry Woods and chose the steep assent to Roseberry Topping summit, straight up the nose, stopping occasionally to marvel at the amazing views over the North York Moors behind. On a glorious sunny day the summit views were even more specular, with views over Teesside, Co Durham, The Yorkshire Dales and all the way over to the North Sea. I check out the two other, less challenging routes up to the summit, before dropping down towards ‘Little Roseberry’, which gives access to the Cleveland Way walking trail, where I take a very enjoyable detour to the Hanging Woods Nap viewpoint, overlooking Guisborough and the North Sea in the distance. Walking back across Newton Moor, which was covered with heather, I get back to the Cleveland Way and head towards Captain Cooks Monument. From the monument I drop down through the woods, walking along some lovely country lanes with some quaint cottages before following the marked public footpath back through a farmers’ field towards Roseberry Topping and the car. A superb walk that ended up just over 8 miles with so much interest, climbs, views, colourful moorlands and open countryside over to the North York Moors, a glorious days walking! INGLETON WATERFALL TRAIL - A Full Guided Tour Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2023-08-27 | Starting and finishing at the village of Ingleton in the Yorkshire Dales, The Ingleton Waterfalls Trail is a beautiful 4.5 mile circular walking route that allows you the best possible views of some of the best waterfalls in the UK. The trail itself is the point where two rivers, the Twiss and Doe converge, carving out 6 spectacular waterfalls that are all encased in a beautiful woodland setting. Open all year around, free parking is part of your entrance fee, with toilets and a café at the start of the walk and the same just after the half way point at the local farm. We check out the rooms, the restaurants, the food, the staff, the lounge areas and the general feel of the hotel. The hotel has almost 2000 excellent reviews on TripAdvisor but also almost 200 terrible reviews on the same platform, so who is right? We also look at local walks right from the hotel door, local bus service to Keswick and Buttermere, with bus stops right outside the hotel. The hotel is dog friendly and is also a renowned wedding venue, we look at the impact of both, we also check out the 40 acres of gardens and the 100 foot Lodore Falls waterfall, which is situated within the hotel grounds. DURHAM CATHEDRAL HISTORY & TOUR Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2023-08-06 | A tour around the UNESCO World Heritage site of Durham Cathedral, which has stood for over 900 years and is home to the Shrine of St Cuthbert and other holy relics including Saint Oswald's Head and the remains of the Venerable Bede.After repeated Viking raids in 793, the monks fled the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in 875, carrying Saint Cuthbert's relics with them and had to continually move the body around the North of England to stop it falling into the hands of the Vikings. The monks finally stopped in Durham and building of the Cathedral started in 1093, replacing the city's previous 'White Church', which was the initial resting place of St Cuthbert. Pilgrims from all over the world came to Durham Cathedral to worship at the Shrine of St Cuthbert, bringing gold, silver and precious jewels. I take a full tour of the cathedral; climbing the 325 steps to the top of the Cathedral Tower, looking back at the Cathedral history, from the Vikings to Oliver Cromwell and Harry Potter, we also see the majestic 7 metre Earth installation ‘Gaia’, which is a giant illuminated globe installation by UK artist Luke Jerram, reflecting on the importance of caring for nature. HELVELLYN via Swirral Edge. Catstye Cam, Whiteside and Raise Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2023-07-23 | Parking at Glenridding, I take the old miners route up to Sticks Pass and the first summit of the day Raise. The swirling mist opens to give amazing views back down the valley and Thirlmere and Bassenthwaite Lake on the other side, before I reach the second summit of the day Whiteside. I continue climbing over Lower Man before hitting the summit of England's third highest peak, Helvellyn and stunning 360 views. After an extended lunch break, I descend down the notorious Swirral Edge, which is widely considered one of the most dangerous routes off Helvellyn, as well as a Grade 1 scramble, something I did not enjoy, before climbing the fourth and final summit of the day Catstye Cam. Dropping down over the summit, I pick up the valley path all the way back down to Glenridding, ending an almost 12 mile loop. Alan METALMAN – Outdoors 2023-07-09 | A full guided walk around the Kentmere Horseshoe, the best, the longest and the toughest of all the Lake District horseshoes. We park opposite the Church of St Cuthbert, in the small village of Kentmere, where there is a (£3) honesty box parking for a maximum of 6 cars and head up the Garburn Pass towards the first of 9 Wainwright summits on a glorious summers day. The views throughout the day were spectacular and the good weather held all day, making it a long, tough but very enjoyable walk. We added in the summit of High Street to our original plans making this an almost 15 mile walk, taking 9 hours, with plenty of stops for filming, eating and resting, taking in the amazing views all around us. Apart from one fall, walking through a herd of cows, neck high ferns and almost stepping on an adder, I had a brilliant day!
