Best Camera Settings for Birds in Flight. Gary Gough 2024-03-24 | In this video, I advise on the best settings for capturing birds in flight. I'm using the new "bird-eye detect" feature recently introduced to the Nikon Z8. WOW!Last week, I visited Bempton Cliffs to try out my Nikon Z8 on birds in flight. It was my first time trying out the "bird-eye detect" recently introduced to Nikon's menu.Focusing: When photographing fast-moving military aircraft flying through the Welsh mountains known as the Mach Loop, I tend to mix the focus settings. I combine Nikon's incredible 3D mode and aircraft detect mode. Shooting birds, on the other hand, seems to be much easier.I was expecting to be dithering around trying to find the best combination of focus modes when, in fact, the best mode was precisely what it said on the tin! Camera to AFC (Constant focusing) and then selecting the "bird-eye-detect". Disclaimer: My channel is sponsored by Nikon, so I can understand why you would think this is nothing but PR for Nikon, but it really isn't. The Bird Detect was pretty much faultless. Every now and again, the focus would jump from one bird to another when the focus area became busy with birds, but that happened rarely.My biggest headache from the trip was the amount of sharp images I had to trawl through. Risky adventure to find epic photos at Moss Force Waterfall Gary Gough 2024-03-10 | In this video, I hiked to the top of Moss Force Waterfall in search of the perfect composition for landscape photography.A few days ago, I headed to a location I had photographed a few times. It's an incredible Lake District National Park area called Moss Force Waterfall.While the waterfall is incredible to photograph, it's also very accessible. It's easy to locate and park, and it's only a few steps from the road. Because of this, nearly all pictures captured from here tend to be from the same common spots.During this visit, I intended to hunt for locations that were different from the norm. I wanted to go beyond the path. Things got a little hairy, but the results speak volumes.Before you continue reading this, I would suggest not Googling "hairy sisters of Glencoe" Heaven knows what might turn up 😁Last week, I frequented my favourite Glencoe location for landscape photography. This time around, instead of visiting the regular areas or even my secret waterfall, I decided to go on an adventure of discovery.Over the many years I have frequented the Glen, I have always wanted to hunt for areas less frequented by Photographers. I knew there must be more to the area. So, in this mini adventure, you'll find me first navigating a river crossing, which was more scary than it came across in the video, I promise you. Then, trekking up a mountain in search of exciting subjects to use as foreground interest.What about the weather?One tip from this video is that you should never avoid inclement weather within reason, of course. I had a little chuckle when I noticed another photographer in the distance turn up and return home within a minute of it raining. I find that incredible. I broke my BRAND NEW NIKON Z8! in an OUTRAGEOUS STORM! Gary Gough 2024-02-04 | In this video, I took my recently acquired Nikon Z8 on a photography expedition to Scotland. A few weeks back, I ventured into the Scottish landscapes, fully equipped with my brand-new Nikon Z8, hoping to capture stunning images.The weather forecast was quite extreme, predicting the arrival of a massive storm with Arctic conditions. As anticipated, the weather lived up to its forecast, creating a chaotic atmosphere.Regrettably, disaster struck on the first night while capturing a captivating timelapse of the night skies. A powerful gust of wind toppled my camera and tripod, rendering the Nikon Z8 non-functional. Although the damage was relatively minor, with only slight harm around the eyepiece and a small crack in the body, the camera's screen and electronic viewfinder refused to power up.To compound the issue, the only alternative camera I brought was an older vlogging camera paired with a 24-105mm lens. Crashed and Trapped at my favourite Landscape Photography Location Gary Gough 2024-01-28 | In this video, I drove 10 hours to arrive at my favourite location for landscape photography. I crashed on the route, and I was trapped there!Last week, I drove up North to my favourite location for landscape photography. It's a small Scottish Loch called Loch Stack. Located in the Northwest of Scotland, Loch Stack is a sizable, uniquely shaped freshwater lake situated about 4 miles to the southeast of Laxford Bridge. Encircled by mountains, it boasts an irregular layout.I had a couple of reasons to go there. One, I knew there was a massive dump of snow due to fall there. Whilst I've been there quite a few times, I have never photographed the area in snowy conditions. Secondly, I had an announcement to make regarding the channel that I'm very proud of. I just wanted to make the announcement at an incredible location.As you can probably tell from the thumbnail. Can I better my best ever Landscape Image using a Nikon Z8 - 6 years later! Gary Gough 2024-01-14 | In this video, I try to better my favourite landscape image of all time. It's six years later: did I manage it?Earlier this week, I headed to Wales to try to better my favourite landscape image of all time. I captured the image at South Stack Lighthouse in Anglesey in May 2018.It's quite a complex image to capture. It's made particularly difficult due to a few factors. Firstly, the conditions have to be perfect. A dark sky with no moon for one and a clear sky is a must. Then, onto the camera settings. A quickened shutter speed is of paramount importance to freeze the lights. As we all know, trying to attain a fast enough shutter speed during the darkest of night can only be achieved by shooting with a very wide aperture and a screamingly high ISO. On top of that, you need a reasonably robust post-processing workflow to take care of the noise that's produced.I captured each image at roughly 1.5 seconds using a super-fast NIKKOR Z 24MM F/1.8 S LENS. My top 10!Before we kick on for another year, you might like looking back at some of my favourite images of the past twelve months.The year ended with very mixed emotions for me. The sudden passing of my Father was a lot to handle. When dealing with that, I was finalising a partnership with an iconic company. It was a very bizarre situation. (I'll announce the partnership in next week's video)Only when you see it in writing do you appreciate just how many miles you put in and how many hours and distances of walking you do! Best Woodland UK location? Dark Hedges of Derby Gary Gough 2023-12-03 | In this video, I capture images of what I consider one of the best woodland locations in England and possibly the UK! I headed to Derby earlier this week, hoping to capture some woodland images. It's an area I have had earmarked for nearly two years.The conditions were okay. It wasn't windy, cold or raining. The sky was pretty pants, but for once, that didn't matter too much. To say I was excited about being there was an understatement.Usually, when you have a preconceived idea about a place, you get let down. Today was not one of those days. This woodland looked incredible. I have never been to the Dark Hedges in Ireland, but this location looks just like it. A truly amazing place!Did I manage to create anything of note? Incredible sunrise Rydal + Elter Water Lake District Gary Gough 2023-11-12 | In this video, I capture images at Rydal Water and Elter Water in the Lake District using the Nikon Z8 and various lenses.The Lake District, with its picturesque landscapes and serene lakes, is a photographer's paradise. One of the most magical experiences a photographer can have in this enchanting region is capturing the beauty of misty mornings. As the mist weaves its way through the hills and valleys, transforming the landscape into a dreamlike scene, every photographer's heart skips a beat.My pal Tony and I headed to the Lake District to capture a few early morning images. We were hoping for, as we all do some interesting conditions. This time of year, you can usually expect a cold morning, frosty grass and possibly a little dusting of snow on the fell tops. While the conditions were far from our expectations, we were treated to some incredible sights. Flat-calm water with quite a bit of mist weaving its way through the trees. As a landscape photographer, you couldn't want for anything else. We knew the misty conditions wouldn't last long, so we found ourselves running around like mad fools, trying to take advantage of these rare conditions.I was happy with the images I had created at first light, but then something magical happened. Common Location Photography Challenge Gary Gough 2023-10-29 | In this video entitled "Common Location Photography Challenge" I demonstrate that it's not impossible to make Honeypot locations your own!Last week, after my Glencoe workshop, I hung around for a couple of days to make a video or two for the channel. This is video number one of two.In this video, I visited the most photographed area of Scotland as a Landscape Photographer, The Buachaille Etive mor. It's so commonly photographed that you often have to queue up at first light to grab a shot or two. Due to the fact it's so popular, I've photographed the area at every time of day and year. Most photographers will literally visit the area and place their tripods down in the same place as countless others have in the past. They'll take the obvious honeypot sho,t which is fine by the way. But most will simply take the image as a tick-box exercise and walk away. Don't worry, we've all been there!So here's the challenge... You decide!I travelled to the Mach Loop last week to capture images of military aircraft screaming through the valleys in Mid Wales. In my opinion, creating a workflow like this will really help if you're struggling. The human peripheral vision is between 30 to 50mm. Gary Gough 2023-09-10 | In this video entitled, Lingmoor Fell Landscape Photography, I photograph my first-ever cloud inversion from a mountaintop. Lingmoor Fell in the Lake District to be precise.My alarm was set for 04:00 and the walk started just 25 minutes later. It was a cracking morning. It was pleasantly warm and very still. In fact, I would go as far as saying the conditions were just perfect! Just for the record, the warm conditions weren't the main reason for me sweating though 😁😁Whilst hiking up we noticed the cloud below us stirring. Could this be my first ever could inversion? But thankfully, e-bikes are met with open arms!A little over two months ago I took receipt of my first-ever electric bike. I think!During a short road trip to Norwich a couple of weeks ago, I took a few stunning images (even though I say so myself) of Happisburgh Lighthouse. While searching for compositions, I noticed something that I thought could be a potential award winner for the category of "Best Foreground Interest". Fine Art Photography WHAT A FIND! Gary Gough 2023-08-06 | In this video, I create Fine Art images at Happisburgh Beach in Norfolk.A couple of weeks ago, I headed south on a short photography road trip. My initial goal was to photograph the incredibly gorgeous Happisburgh Lighthouse. Not only did I complete my goal but I think I managed to capture some of my favourite landscape photography images of the year. All will be revealed in next week's video.Whilst I was there, something caught my eye. Hundreds of old supports or stanchions sat nicely sat in the sea. I couldn't believe how amazing they looked. Better still, as a fine art landscape photographer, they were just what I love photographing.Apart from the scare I had at getting cut off by the incoming tide, I think it's fair to say, I loved every minute of my time photographing the area. As you might be able to tell in the video 😁😁I spent the next 3 days in and around the area creating more fine art images. I believe some of them are even better than the ones in this video. I also met up with one of my favourite UK fine art photographers. Somebody I draw a lot of inspiration from and if you don't already know him, I'm sure you will do too! Woodpeckers, squirrels and nuthatches to name a few. In brief, I've seen Paul's pictures from his hides and they were so impressive I contacted him to arrange a meetup. I'm so glad I did... A few weeks ago I met up with photographer Paul Fowlie at Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales. Paul owns hides nearby where you can photograph your typical woodland wildlife. I've purposefully played this down a bit. I expected a good day's photography but I certainly didn't expect to be blown away as much as I was...The day started off with a brief hello and handshake as they do. A few minutes drive and we arrived at Paul's hides. For now, forget about the wildlife for a second. The location is a woodland photographer's dream' what an incredible place! Then, within minutes, I was transported into a childlike state. Not only was I in an incredibly picturesque woodland location... but there were amazing animals everywhere. Search for Mysterious Sinkhole Seacliff Beach! Gary Gough 2023-07-16 | In this video entitled, "Search for Mysterious Sinkhole Seacliff Beach" I travel to Scotland in search of a subject that's rare to photograph.A couple of weeks ago, I headed to an incredibly beautiful beach called Seacliff. It's located just over the Scottish border on the east coast. To say it's a landscape photographer's dream location is a massive understatement. My goal during this trip is to try and find a sinkhole! Sinkholes are incredible to photograph but they're very rare to find. I was told about the sinkhole 3 years ago. Somebody (apologies for not remembering) told me about the place. In fact, he actually emailed me a detailed map. Whilst sadly I can't remember the informant I did save the map image. Fine Art Photography A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE! Gary Gough 2023-07-02 | In this video, I capture unique Fine Art Images from Lindisfarne, The Holy Island.This video was a challenge and a half to make. In fact, when I started to create this video, I had no idea if I could complete it. Wyscombe Beach Landscape Photography Gary Gough 2023-06-18 | In this video, I capture images of the very picturesque Wyscombe Beach in DevonLast week I had the pleasure of visiting Ayrmer Cove for a spot of Landscape Photography. However, things didn't go swimmingly as they never seemed to with me!I started off with good intentions of trying to photograph the aforementioned but unfortunately, the tide wasn't at the right height for a composition I wanted. Not to be outdone, I headed to Wyscombe Beach which was roughly a quarter of a mile further along the coast. I am so glad I did. Wyscombe Beach is an incredible location for Landscape photographers. He promised me I'd love it. When Gaz suggests that I'm going to love a location it generally means a long laborious walk with a possible image at the end of it. This time, however, he wasn't wrong!I have never ever visited a location with so many photographic opportunities. Landscape, Wildlife, Industrial, Woodland and even a little Urban Exploration photography are thrown in for good measure. This place simply has the lot.Where is it? It's a private estate that allows a small amount of public access. So limited in fact, they only allow 25 cars per day and it's not accessible every day. I knew the jet was at the location and I wanted to photograph it in a different way from the norm. Moss Force Waterfall + DRIVING FAIL! Gary Gough 2023-02-05 | In this video entitled, Moss Force Waterfall + DRIVING FAIL, I attempt to capture an image or 2 of the waterfall and I also film a scary car crash.NOBODY WAS HURT IN THE CRASH but it must have been really scary for the guys in the car!A couple of weeks ago I headed up to the Lake District to photograph Moss Force Waterfall at sunrise. It was a cracking morning. The first issue was actually getting to the waterfall. The road was treacherous. A recent snowfall settled nicely on top of compacted ice. To say the road was slippery was an understatement. I have a theory for situations like this and it's called risk and reward. The harder the better. The more difficult, the more likely I am to capture a unique image. That's my theory at least!Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video. Epic Light Catbells + Lodore Falls Lake District Gary Gough 2023-01-25 | In this video, I travelled to the Lake District National Park to Photograph the incredible Catbells and Lodore Falls.Last week, I travelled to the Lake District to photograph Catbells at Sunrise and later in the day photograph another area of the Lakes I had never been to, Lodore Falls. Both locations were excellent in their own way!It was an early, dark and very cold start to the day. Most of the paths were covered in compacted snow that had nestled on top of the ice. To say the walk-up was a little dangerous was an understatement. I think Paul Compton who I was camped next to for the night without either of us realising it had the best idea, he donned his crampons. Great idea Paul!Anyways, we soldiered on and walked up to the point where Tony and I had wanted to reach. It wasn't the summit. We thought the light was going to be epic so we decided to photograph looking up at Cat Bells and not from the top of Cat Bells looking down. For once Tony and I got it bang-on!The light was indeed epic and the resulting images were all printers!Lodore Falls - I had never been to this waterfall before but so glad I did. It was a fantastic climax to the day. The views are stunning.The second location involved a climb up the Devil's Staircase. I wasn't alone though. I arranged to meet up with Ben Barendrecht.Ben lives in Glencoe. He's a mountain leader and Photographer. Whilst he might not profess to the latter I can confess that I'd be more than happy to display his work as my own! These conditions are INCREDIBLE! Glencoe in Winter Gary Gough 2023-01-01 | In this video entitled "Glencoe in Winter" I create stunning images in weather conditions rarely seen.The date was early December and I had just finished an amazing winter workshop in Glencoe. Then to my surprise weather warning after weather warning pinged on my phone. In fact, it was just before the world took a 2-year break that I found myself stuck in a white-out! Stuck being the operative word there. Mind you, getting the van stuck when there are 5 burley helpers onboard to help push is always a bonus. Anyways, this wasn't going to be one of those times, this was going to be a whole new ball game.Glencoe in the snowWhilst the weather warnings didn't bring the snow I had hoped for, the conditions the weather did bring were even better, way better! The snow didn't fall but the temperature certainly did. I recorded minus 12 in the van at one stage. Instead of a white-out everywhere, the very low temperatures brought about a great freeze. Oh man was it cold!The great freeze!Everywhere was frozen. The lakes were rock solid. The waterfalls just looked like time had stood still, very still! Stranger than that, there was a little dusting of snow but it wasn't enough to cover the mountains, roads or grass. In fact, the only thing the snow actually stuck to was the ice. Whilst this might seem like nothing out of the ordinary it was very bizarre to look at. In the film below (Part 1) you can see what I mean, especially during the drone fly-overs.
