Bunging It All In - Beans, Squash, Tomatoes, Roots... and a Heatwave!
updated
Friday 6 October - we've been in Wales for a few days and on returning to the plot I notice a major rookie error... though I was pleased to see growth on some marjoram I had potted up and excellent growth on our re-potted roses. We've also had quite a few issues with a new padlock on our main gate, with some people being locked in or out! This now seems to be sorted. 👍😊👍;
Saturday 7 October - I got on and strimmed paths today, just giving them a quick strim and rake. I then got on with clearing a tomato bed, especially removing the fruit to put into our home food waste bin as I don't want viable seed from blighted tomatoes to volunteer next year as they will likely be swiftly prone to blight. I also cleared the bed of the tomato frames and weeded it well.

Paul's series 'A Week at the Plot' is his mini vlogs of mainly handheld footage of what he has been up to at the plot each week; little and often, and all about gardening, what's growing, being sown, harvested, enjoyed and much more.
'A Week at the Plot' is not necessarily daily vlogs, though regular short ones that are strung together, topped and tailed, and posted on YouTube on Monday (and Wednesday if a two-parter). These are in addition to our monthly plot tours at our UK No Dig allotment in West London.

Tuesday 26 September - things are really beginning to happen with the paddock plots, which is a stark difference to my plot! However, I have modular sown Perpetual Spinach I need to get in, and that's the job I get on with today;
Thursday 28 September - back from mum's funeral service and I wanted to do a quite job on a quiet part of the plot, so I set to and clear a bed ready for growing over winter of just leaving fallow and covered in cardboard;
Friday 29 September - we've had a delivery of bagged compost from The Compost Centre; it's mainly for new tenants and paddock plot holders. I have a look at the quality, and am pretty impressed.

Tuesday 19 September - we heard last night the sad new of mum's death, and I needed to get out to am at the plot finding Moments of Joy amidst the grief;
Friday 22 September - having had quite wet weather over the past few days I am at the plot harvesting the remainder of the beans that can be harvested - thee are to be dried completely and used either for growing beans in future years or eating as a reconstituted, cooked bean for soups and stews in the winter months. Despite drizzle beginning to set in, I also have time to take down the bean canes, and the plot is beginning to look rather bare;
Saturday 23 September - I intended to get the two bean beds prepped for next year's growing, though with a lot of people at the allotment site today who wanted to chat, I only had time to get one sorted. I weeded the bed with my hand fork, chopped up the bean growth and left it on the top of the soil as there were quite a few ladybirds still, so best not to put cardboard on top until they have made their ways off.

Sunday 17 September - it's well time that the Goldana turnips which were modular sown four weeks ago get planted into their beds so they can grow on, and there are several choices... and of course, I have changed my mind a few times on which bed! As our allotment site tenancy year end is at the end of the month we have renewals going on, which always brings about changes, and even more so with the paddock plots this year.

Monday 11 September - we had our allotment summer BBQ on Sunday afternoon and I said I would clean up the BBQs and utensils, and am really pleased at how the clean up operation went. 👍 I also prune our squash back, taking off wines beyond well forming fruits to ensure that the energy goes into the well forming fruits rather than new growth. I also look at the mizuna that has germinated from saved seed, though it is rather poor germination. 😬;
Wednesday 13 September - today I'm picking overripe cucumbers from which to save seed, plus beginning the harvest of our Madeira Maroon flat climbing French beans which will again be dried to save for further growing, plus doing our very late first pick of bunches of tomatoes!

Friday 8 September - planting out our Portuguese Cabbage / Nero di Toscana cross, and making sure they are firm and given a really good drenching too, especially as we are in the middle of a heatwave. I also show how this new variety is like both of its parents plants that were originally crossed;
Saturday 9 September - the heatwave continues so I am making sure I give all that need it a really good water, especially those seeds that have been recently sown and plants that have gone in. I also harvest the seeds of our Beurre de Rocquencourt for seed saving... for growing on in future years. They are all dry now and I explain the process I will be following to ensure no bean fly/flies destroy these beans.

Saturday 2 September - we've now entered meteorological autumn, and the plot is certainly beginning to look autumnal... maybe October autumnal rather than September autumnal! 🙄 A job I've been wanting to do for months BUT have been putting off (ie neglected!) gets done today... the tidying of our benches and all that is on them... with a good bit of weeding and consolidation of pots and plants. 👍
Sunday 3 September - I pot on the pink climbing roses into larger pots; they will also get a good feed in a month of so when they have settled into this larger growing space. I had in my head a few jobs I wanted to do though notice there's now blight really taking hold in another tomato bed, and decide to take all the plants out... hey ho... Green Tomato Curry it will be!! 😬 This is the thing with gardening, growing and allotmenteering, plans change all the time as priorities change. 👍

Monday 28 August - I'm planting out our modular sown swede. I've left them unwatered for a few days so that this job is easier and the compost in the modules is not so wet it falls apart. I also net these as I know the pigeons here love fresh brassica plants!;
Thursday 31 August - I've begun hoarding cardboard again, as it's that time of year... in fact meteorologically it's the last day of summer... and it's drizzling!! Due to the weather, I have had to change my plans as the job I wanted to do was an outside job. Instead I sow some perpetual spinach... I had also wanted to sow chard, but... However, I also notice the tomatoes on our next door plot have blight, so there's remedial work on our tomatoes across the path.

Friday 25 August - today's a getting stuff done day, starting with deadheading the calendula and tidying up the Feverfew and rest of the bed, then clearing the turnip bed to prep it for planting out our modular sown swede. The bed will need feeding, though that can wait for another day. 👍
Sunday 27 August - I prune one of the squash plants to make sure the energy is going in to developing the fruits rather than just growing, plus I show what a female flower and show how it is different from a male flower - I also talk briefly about hand pollinating squash. Now we know where the swede are going, I ponder where the Portuguese Cabbage / Nero di Toscana cross will go, and decide the courgette and cucumber bed is the best place, though that can wait for a few weeks. I also get on with the feeding of what is to be our swede bed - first scattering chicken manure pellets, then feeding with our own comfrey feed and then water with fresh water. 😊 I harvest and pod a load of Golden Gate beans - though for freezing as a bean rather than a pod. 👍Having lost a few things on the plot this week (most of which have been found!) I also discuss why it's good NOT to buy green tools for your garden growing space or allotment! 😁

Saturday 19 August - I harvest a LOAD of yellow courgettes - some will go into soup, and the remainder will be gifted to a plot neighbour and others placed on the community sharing table. I also try and stabilise the sunflower growing in the ex carrot bed, as it's growing well and may even be a contender in the Hanwell Sunflower Competition which I am judging next weekend;
Sunday 20 August - today is all about continuing the process of saving the seeds from two types of brassicas - the Mizuna that overwintered in the poly and the Golden Turnip that overwintered outside in the bed that grew poppies so well this year. There's a lot of scrunching and blowing, or winnowing as the technical term is.

Tuesday 15 August - first disappointment of the week... all the lettuce seedlings I planted up in the poly last week have been munched by slugs or snails, and therefore I think we have a grumpy frog! This makes me wonder why volunteer seedlings and plants are often stronger and survive better than our own tended seeds, seedlings and plants;
Wednesday 16 August - I'm planting out the remaining Marveille de Quatre Saisons lettuce and also doing further sowings of carrots and lettuce;

Tuesday 20 June - we've been to Guernsey for a few days so it is always interesting to get back to the plot and see what has changed in that time. I do some harvesting of broad beans and lettuce and also talk about being gifted peppers and blackcurrants;
Thursday 22 June -time to get our tomatoes in!
Sunday 25 June - It's a hot day, so it was best to get down early and get stuff done before the heat of the day really took hold. I discuss our Gate Sale which was on Saturday and raised over £500 (and counting!) for our allotment association. I also look at what I bought at the Gate Sale for the plot - some for food and other plants to add a spoash of our and raise happy memories of Guernsey.

Paul's series 'A Week at the Plot' is his mini vlogs of mainly handheld footage of what he has been up to at the plot each week; little and often, and all about gardening, what's growing, being sown, harvested, enjoyed and much more.
'A Week at the Plot' is not necessarily daily vlogs, though regular short ones that are strung together, topped and tailed, and posted on YouTube on a Monday. These are in addition to our monthly plot tours at our UK No Dig allotment in West London.

Monday 12 June - I wasn't expecting to do a segment today, though the torrential rain that came whilst I was at home had to be commented upon;
Tuesday 13 June - I decided to do a June Plot Tour; very early in the morning!! We haven't done a tour for quite a while, though I thought a 'warts and all' one was due. The plot is both joyous and a mess... challenges abound!

Wednesday 7 June - getting pots ready to sow dwarf Borlotti beans for our allotment Gate Sale, plus cutting back grasses before the seeds mature, and tidying the polytunnel - a tidy was much needed!;
Friday 9 June - harvesting our Porcelain Music garlic, and sadly about 25% have white rot... and this is the thing with gardening and growing, you have to take the highs with the lows, the rough with the smooth. Growing and gardening is good for your mental health, it is proven, though occasionally we get these knocks and need to take them onboard and move on;
Sunday 11 June - a host of poppies that I left to grow in a bed greeted me this morning - both a joyous sight for me and as they're full of nectar the bumblebees are loving it too! I also choose which broad bean plant I am going to be saving seed from and decide to fleece it to make sure I don't harvest from it. I also sow the Borlotti beans which unusually I have pre-soaked, just to get them going as quickly as possible as they will be used for our allotment Gate Sale in less than two weeks time. Finally, I get in a few cucumbers and also remove the plastic from one side of our bed to see if there are slugs.

Tuesday 30 May - watering of the saplings we planted as a hedge at the fenceline last year, checking out the forming scapes on our hardneck garlic, and checking on our rather splendid broad beans plants which are now forming broad beans. I also look at the tomato plants we have on our benches, and have a look at further volunteer tomato plants, and talk about the very drying breeze that we've had for quite a few days now... a breeze that is both drying out plants and also the soil surface;
Thursday 1 June - bringing parts of a table down which I'm donating to the association, plus I needed to harvest some lettuce. As I'm down I notice a Ladybird poppy which I had not seen on the plot before, and also have a look at the first Golden Gate bean that has germinated. I also have a chat about it being the start of summer, yet it is still chilly in the mornings and when the sun is not shining, though when the sun is shining it is nice and warm;
Sunday 4 June - sowing dwarf French beans, in this case Rocquencourt and Venice. I am sowing them in the same beds I sowed the climbing beans a week or so ago, and I'm also sowing some in modules I am reusing to sell as part of our gate sale in three weeks time.

Tuesday 23 May - I'm putting up our bean frames, and a look at Verbascum and the mullein catterpillar;
Thursday 25 May - I'm sowing three types of climbing bean today - Shaz's Scarlet Emperor Runner Beans (bog standard runners), Golden Gate (a yellow flat French Bean) and Madeira Maroon (green flat bean that's good for eating as a pod or as a dried podded bean);
Saturday 27 May - we have a mooch around the plot today, looking at our courgette and cucumber plants that we sprayed with Grazers Slug & Snail defence, our tomato plants and some gherkins we've been given, the Hottentot-figs we have growing, and what I'm sure is a hedgehog run. Also I put in Lollo Rosso lettuce plants we've grown from seed, and do weeding of various beds.

Saturday 20 May - I remove the black ground cover from where we are going to be putting tomatoes, courgettes and cucumbers... and get the courgettes and cucumbers in;
Sunday 21 May - today was about those oaks, they'll grow too big for the plots, though aren't small enough to be insignificant... as Hope Jahren said "Every acorn on the ground is just as alive as the three-hundred-year-old oak tree that towers over it."
