When moving aboard a sailboat, one of the biggest parts of the process for living aboard fully is moving all of the stuff of life, your things, to... SOMEWHERE. In our case, that's tools and boat shed into two shipping containers, and some personal things into a third, plus getting "rid" of a whole lot of everything else. We had a yard sale, gave some things away, and packed some things for later. Boat Work: Roller Furler and Lazy Jacks - Episode 279 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat Acorn To Arabella 2023-09-01 | For those of you missing some of the woodworking and boatbuilding projects, we get to some much-anticipated DIY projects while at the mooring in Portland, Maine, such as getting the cherry wood winch bases cut to size, shaped, and installed on the coamings. Spoiler alert, they're beautiful.Other projects tackled: Lazy jacks were installed, and Steve does a cool hardware trick to get the rings he needed for them. It involves stainless steel chain. The roller furler for the furling jib has lengths of stainless steel that need to be cut to size and screwed to each other. Ever used Loctite AND 3M 5200 on a particular thing? This is definitely a measure 8 times cut once scenario, considering how very right it works when it's right, and how very wrong it can go if it's a little off-size. A sunset sail?! Navigating Arabella Up Two Tricky Rivers - Episode 276 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat Acorn To Arabella 2023-08-11 | A week of adventure! We conclude last week's sailing passage from Provincetown, Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Gloucester, Massachusetts, arriving on a mooring at the end of the day. From there, Robin found a sweet intracoastal passage on the Annisquam River, which connects Gloucester Harbor to Ipswich Bay. This makes a lot of firsts, including calling for bridge openings. Two hours later, Arabella arrived in the Merrimack River, which is a tricky place for any boat to navigate because of rocks, intense currents, and at this time, perigean spring tides. The Cape Cod Canal is an engineering marvel many years in the making, if you count all the preliminary surveys and even an earlier iteration of it many years ago. It's an exciting place, meaning that the current rips through, and the time to transit either north or south is dependent upon the tide. Boats without engines can't transit the canal. Here's a synopsis:We fire up the Victron AC inverter and get some details about how that fits into our marine DC electrical system. The forward portlights on the cabin house need new external bronze plates because the ones they came with fit poorly.The cockpit goes outside to get all of its accoutrements (deck prisms, deadlights) installed. Saloon table charging stations are detailed, and the very simple AC system is discussed. It's basically the water heater (which heats off of the engine), and a single GFCI plug for when Arabella is on shore power. Where did we put the only plywood in Arabella? Have a peek at our Carolina Wren in the garage. She had four babies. They're all great and have fledged now. LONGBOARDING PARTY! Wood for sale. They should be comfortable in the hand, easy to reach, and of course people also would like them to be aesthetically pleasing. They should be everywhere aboard, ready to grab in case of a sudden and unexpected motion, as happens from time to time in a quiet anchorage with passing boat traffic. These handrails are one of the most anticipated boat parts in this DIY wooden boat so far (it covers the joint between the grub aka house sill and the cabin house) and so we hope you enjoy the covered bronze bolts and the more finished look of the interior. Steve installs a large piece of custom bronze hardware to the boat, which covers almost the entirety of the stem. We also bung all the fastener holes, get a little more work done on the companionway hatch, check in with Akiva, and get a little further on the traveler, which is an important part for the running rigging and sail trim. It's not mysterious, but it does take practice, and Arabella's dynamic oak planking edge-set on its inboard edge makes it so we have to be very careful with the amount. "Details of Boat Construction" and "How to Build a Wooden Boat" came off the book shelf frequently at the start of this build, and still come out from time to time.After caulking, seams are painted with regular topside paint above the waterline in order to protect the cotton, and also to hold it in place. David begins mocking up a deck box that will act both as storage for needful things and, when ranging farther and living aboard, it will be just the right size for holding a spare, full propane tank, and the empty one when we switch it out. Propane is our main cooking fuel.Ross applies a satisfying first coat of oil on the deck after meticulously taking care of scraping and repairing the pitch alongside George. Yes, we're aware that our guests are not wearing PPE of certain sorts. They let light in, which is important of course for a good mood and a lovely living space, but is also likely to keep mold at bay. Along with needing a custom cherry wood interior plate for a finished look, Steve needs to replace the glass, which is likely inappropriate for a boat, with sheet acrylic. Butyl tape is the go-to for many marine hatch applications. It does a great job of sealing between layers, and has a fairly good lifespan. And speaking of long-lived materials: acrylic has a longer lifespan than Lexan on boats. Beside a little help from our dear friends David and Aaron, he's been using a combination of mechanical advantage with climbing gear and a respect for gravity. The rudder hardware from Victoria that our stalwart machinist, Joe, has rehabilitated is put into place this week, which means it must be aligned very precisely. These days, Steve is working on painting the cabin house as he waits for the afternoon sun to shift around to the stern of the boat, where he works on the rudder. At Accutech, accutechmarine.com, we walk you through the process, and show off some other very cool things they're able to do in the propeller shop. We also hang the rudder for the first time in its place, and get to see what it all looks like. It's a big reveal! As is the view from the inside as the sealed, faired, painted, routed, then painted-again overhead of the cabin trunk is put into place on the cabin house. Then the cabin trunk is fiberglassed, effectively making what was once strips of cedar, inappropriate for planking or other parts of the boat, one solid piece of waterproof, composite material. Roll up your sleeves, let's dig in to making the square wooden spar round and about the galvanized shrouds for this wooden sailboat.Keith Mitchell from Shipwright Skills takes a long walk by way of a lot of passes up and down the mast. Many cuts are needed to achieve the ever-smaller facets that progress to the final round shape. The wooden mast is made octagonal, then 16-sided, then 32-sided... then laboriously sanded to round.Steve explains why we've chosen galvanized standing rigging for the shrouds. Arabella's forestay will be of stainless steel, as it needs to stand up to a furler's foil moving around it, but everything else will be parceled, served, then sloshed galvanized wire. Eyesplices captured top and bottom (top over a special piece of hardware, and bottom attached to deadeyes). We'll also check in with KP for a hot minute for the detail being routed into the overhead of the coach roof. Where a wooden boat builder might not have wide, clear, stock, this approach would work— but also, hulls are built this way for both strength and affordability. It's also very repairable, which is important if you're taking a DIY approach to wooden boat ownership. All of the superstructures on Arabella will be strip-built, which we show this week. We're starting to get into "no gluing season" here in the United State's northeast corner, and so it's important for us to boogie on these elements that rely on epoxy for their success. Pretty soon, because of this closing weather window and in an effort to stay warm as we finish interior elements this winter, we will be fiberglassing the cabin trunk and finishing off these pieces. Sometimes as many as 6 tools could be used for something like this, but oftentimes it's 3 or 4. The chainsaw is a wonderful tool for freeform shaping... it removes a lot of material, and the small chainsaw Steve uses here is easy to control. It does get awfully warm as it goes through the bone-dry oak, which means the chain expands and gets a little loose on its bar, but we're sure everyone in the comments section will already know that and won't say a dingdang thing. ;)NBC's Today Show came to film us, and we show you a bit of how that looked and felt for the crew. We use 3M 4200 to bed the entire surface between the sides of the cabin house and deck/sill/grub, and large, custom bolts hold everything together as well.
