Science and the law come in to conflict more often than you might think. In this episode I want to tell you about several cases that I have followed which have concerned me greatly. The issue here isn't the actual scientific evidence, it is rather the way that scientists pursue and discuss this evidence, usually in a straight-forward and frank manner that doesn't sit well with courts.

I used to think that atomic nuclei are basically little balls, but this paper which just appeared found one that's the shape of a dumbbell. And it's not even a highly unstable one, it's Berryllium-10 which is radioactive, but has a half-life of more than a million years.

Sleep problems are incredibly common, and so is misinformation about cures for them on social media. In this video, I have collected what experts say about good sleep. The Do's the Don't's, the So-so, and most importantly: What realistic expectations you should have about your sleep. Sleep is very individual, what is too little for one, is just right for another. So don't stress over it.

Is science coming to an end? On the one hand, it seems like scientific progress has slowed to a crawl and no big breakthroughs are happening any more. On the other hand, we are left with many unsolved problems in science that I am pretty sure have a solution. In this video I explain why I think that we need to seriously consider the possibility that we live in the final phase of scientific discovery.

Today we have an update on the biggest astrophysics drama of the year, thatβs an observation which seems to be ruling out the most popular alternative to dark matter. Then we have a group of geologists who claim that parts of the moon are stuck in the mantle of earth, a new and quite plausible explanation for the sudden dimming and brightening of the star Betelgeuse, plans for a smaller and more energy-efficient particle collider, the first full colour images from the EUCLID mission, earthquakes in the laboratory, a microscopic engine with record efficiency, plans to produce hydrogen with small nuclear reactors, climate scientists who say weβd be better off cooking with synthetic oil, and of course, the telephone will ring.

The idea of parallel universes has captured the imagination of many. In physics, it's prominently represented by the βMany Worldsβ interpretation of quantum mechanics. In this video, I want to explain how the Many Worlds Interpretation works. Is it science? Does it solve any problems? And are the parallel universes real?

Weβll have a first look at intergalactic filaments, talk about building roads on the moon, whether chatbots understand what they chat about, a new type of qubit with a low error rate, sound waves in crystals, how to deflect lasers with nothing but air, dunes on mars, the first hurricane prediction market, and of course, the telephone will ring.

What does physics say about time travel? Surprisingly enough it doesn't just say it's impossible, it's more complicated than that. In this video I'll sort out what Einstein's general relativity and quantum mechanics tell us about time travel. And is MIT really building a time machine to find dark matter? We'll get to that.

Correction to what I say at 10:36 -- The ions are of course positively charged. Sorry about that!
What if we could harness the power of photons to process information? We can! It's called photonic computing. It's one of the new approaches to quantum computing - and it's looking more and more likely that it could be the key to make quantum computers work.
It's not the only newcomer. In this video, we'll take a look at photonic computing and two other newcomers: optical tweezers and topological quantum computing. Maybe the breakthrough for quantum tech is just around the corner.

Correction to what I say at 04:07 That should have been ebeam screening, not ebeam lithography. Sorry about that.
In the past 10 years or so, tech specialists have repeatedly voiced concerns that the progress of computing power will soon hit the wall. Miniaturisation has physical limits, and then what? Have we reached these limits? Is Mooreβs law dead? Thatβs what weβll talk about today.

Today I have an update on the reproduction efforts for the supposed room temperature superconductor, LK 99, the first images from the Euclid mission, more trouble with Starlink satellites, first results from a new simulation for cosmological structure formation, how to steer drops with ultrasound, bacteria that make plastic, an improvement for wireless power transfer, better earthquake warnings, an attempt to predict war, and of course the telephone will ring.
Here is the link to the overview on the LK99 reproduction experiments that I mentioned: urlis.net/vesb75fq

Correction to what I say at 14:22 -- The KATRIN experiment does not look for neutrinoless double beta decay, it's trying to measure the absolute neutrino masses. There are several other experiments looking for neutrinoless double beta decay. Sorry about that mixup!
Some physicists are claiming that there is something "wrong" with our understanding of the universe. Oftentimes, it's just to justify asking for funding for new experiments, a better detector, a new telescope, a bigger collider, but what if there's something more than that? Do we have evidence of new physics? Or not? In this video, we will look at dark matter and dark energy, quantum gravity, the mass of the Higgs-boson, neutrino masses, and the matter-antimatter asymmetry.

Many companies try to appear environmentally friendly without making a real difference, a strategy thatβs been dubbed βgreenwashingβ. So, is calling a product or service βeco-friendlyβ just a ploy of companies to get more money out of us? What are the consequences for climate change? And how can we spot those fake claims? Thatβs what weβll talk about today.

Transportation is a major contributor to greenhouse-gas emissions. Will electric vehicles be the key to stopping climate change or will they wreck the electrical grid? What are the major issues and drawbacks of electric vehicles? For this video, we have collected all you need to know for the ongoing transition to electric vehicles.
