Justin J.M. HignerAn Academy Award-nominated production (Best Documentary Feature, 1966) by the Jefferson National Expansion Historical Association.
The Gateway Arch was and is commonly seen variously as a symbol of patriotic American ingenuity and engineering honoring pioneering European / Colonial settler ancestors, as an equally potent and graphic symbol of a 'triumphal' conclusion to often brutal acquisitions of Native territory still recalled then by surviving Elders, a highly questionable use of public money (at least for its time), a lucrative project which illegally sidelined colored contractors, or a project which removed, partially, an already notable and historic waterfront. Perhaps it is all of these and perhaps it has yet to define itself in other ways over time.
Certainly, speaking for itself artistically, geometrically and architecturally, the Gateway Arch is an strikingly elegant, sublime and impressionable landmark built at great risk to life and limb which greatly changed the symbolic and cultural destiny of historic St. Louis and marked an era of mid-century and midwestern pragmatic optimism. It was meant to stand and to defy. Polite and informative comments and memories are welcome!
Note the historic passenger river steamer SS "Admiral" in the Mississippi River that was present for the topping off ceremony, built in 1904 as the "Albatross", rebuilt in 1937 into its silver streamlined condition seen here, and scrapped in 2011 after a failed preservation effort. This is posted purely for educational purposes and, like the rest of my Channel, is not monetized.

Higner2024-09-28 | On September 28th, 2024 (and on the eve of Gold Star Mothers' Day) a formal dedication service was held behind the Wheatfield Town Hall building at the Wheatfield Veterans Monument and Memorial in Honor of Gold Star Mothers of our region and the unique tribute to them at the site. A statue of a grieving mother, kneeling in deep reverence towards the sacrifice she represents for all mothers and families who lost sons and daughters to war. US Army veteran Tom Kontak and members of the Veterans Monument Committee organized the event while honorable members of the Western New York Military Order of the Purple Heart provided refreshments. The Wreathe contributed is a faithful replica of one that stood for Gold Star Mothers standing at the cenotaph, present at the current site but had once been at the Wheatfield Highway Garage property in 1953, where three other Gold Star Mothers of that time also stood. There were several Gold and Blue Star Mothers and their families present and all were honored. Keynote to the ceremony, however, was Fran Davis, Cathy McFarlane and Holly Baker (President of WNY Gold Star Mothers Inc.) 8 chapters of this administration remain in WNY of a national association created in 1928. The granddaughter of Annie Nickerson, the very first Gold Star Mother honored in 1928 (mother of WW I casualty, Alfred Nickerson), was also present with a special Certificate recently presented to her by the 118th Congress. The Invocation and Closing was by Rev. Denton White, Pastor at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Bergholz. The Welcome Address was by Town of Wheatfield NY Supervisor Don MacSwan (twice recipient of the Purple heart, Vietnam). Speakers included NYS Senator Robert G. Ortt and NYS Assemblyman Angelo J. Morinello (both veterans) and US Congressman, Tim Kennedy. Wheatfield Town Historian Justin Higner presented floral bouquets to each of the Gold and Blue Star Mothers as bagpiper and fireman Kevin Mahoney performed 'Amazing Grace' during the hand out (later, in the evening, Kevin came back to play Taps). Smaller bouquets were also handed out to Honored Gold and Blue Star guests. Besides the Wreathe, one singular and small floral tribute was laid next to the statue itself in Honor of those Gold Star Mothers who could not attend and for those who have since passed on since 1928. Other guests included former Niagara County Legislative Chair William R. Ross (Army veteran), Russel Casterline (Korea veteran, Purple Heart recipient), Town Counselman Randy Retzlaff, Larry Helwig and Curt Doktor, Town Justices Gary Strenkoski and Angela Stamm-Philips, Niagara County Sherriff Michael Filicetti, Town Clerk Kathrine Harrington-Smith, former Town Counselman James Heuer, American Legion Riders, American Legion Post 1451, along with other attendees, guests and veterans from WW II and on. After the Service, the Gold Star Mothers' Wreathe was carefully taken in Honor, past tributes to town residents, to the welcoming lobby of the Wheatfield Seniors Community Center for temporary public display.Cobblestone Museum of Albion, NY Presentation 2024Justin J.M. Higner2024-09-20 | Just a STONE'S throw away (if you will!) from our museum campus, the Wheatfield Seniors Center and Das Haus, Einhaus und Der Stall German Heritage Museum hosted Doug Farley of the Cobblestone Museum of Albion, NY- a great village of 10 historic buildings, with 3 of them built on site and the remainder moved. The lecture included a facinating breakdown of the nature of the buildings, why our region is so special in its concentration of such buildings from the early to mid 1800s and counts as a true cobblestone building. George and Ruth Camann provided lovley refreshments while a gallon of Cherry Bank Cider made a special surprise at the table via Justin Higner! The meeting was dedicated to the late Fern Irene Suckow (1930-2024), a long time supporter of our society and a teacher of Holy Ghost Church School in Bergholz. A video of the show will be posted soon! If you live in such a historic home, say in the comments! 🤠

There is an earlier post on this building that explains that. Sorry if I didn't include that part. The new owners of the complex wanted to use building laws of the time to be able to keep the business close to wardrobe rather than have to move it further back according to the new codes. We had a wonderful time with other hard-working Lions at St. Davids, Canada at our sister Club, the St. David's Lions Club (Est. 1963) and its generous members who welcomed us for a superb Steak Night. Anthems were heartily sung and Grace was declared. The good food featured loins and T-bones, baked beans, salads, baked potatoes, bread/butter, beer-other drinks, coffee and strawberry shortcakes. Wheatfield Lions Club President Lion Roberta O'Toole, Past President Lion Chris Stanz and his wife Gloria, Lion Nancy Rosie and Lion Justin Higner are welcomed to the annual St. Davids Lions Club Steak Night for a fine and fun evening, with generous accolades and tidings. This was also St. David's President Lion Susan Snider's last event before the end of her term. Lion Susan (seen in the intro screen in the center, light blue top) was St. David's first woman President and an integral part of the Club's long history, with a fun and embracing wit practically unmatched in the region. From us she received a beautiful and vintage Hands Across the Border Pin from Lion Justin Higner on behalf of the Club, while Wheatfield President Lion Roberta O'Toole delivered her own remarks. Higner2024-06-16 | (Lore) This one is a special favorite and its honestly surprising that this piece is still with us. I could have lost it early due to bow damage due to some issues and moisture, but a massive refit on it kept it going 25 years later! 🖖🍷⚓️🌹 This is the preserved and retired ocean / cabin liner "Cambria " seen here with mast and life boats removed and under tow to her permanent home with the Commodore Yacht Club. Built in 1999 (by now the equivalent of 50 or so years old, materials wise), the veteran liner retains much of her original appearance but has a long history. The last of the 'cabin' liners (that is to say, more ferry than liner), began operations as a companion liner to Royal Line's larger "Magdalena" as the "Andes", with an all-white hull and yellow funnel. She then was transferred, upon the ending of regular liner duties, to cruising under the Royal Viking Cruises (same company) brand as the refitted "Royal Viking Sun" while the "Magdalena" became "Royal Viking Sky", among other ships within the group. Acquired with the rest of the fleet into the expanding Layland Cruise Line corporation as the "Astoria" before many more years. Transferred lastly to Zodiac Cruises as their "Scorpio Star ll" it was eventually clear that, without the same amenities as the far newer and sometimes larger cruise liners, the charming if rugged ship needed to be retired. Sold to the yacht club for a dollar, the ship was extensively overhauled with a new and repaired bow and restored public rooms, particularly its famous Green Gallery with its restored painted glass skylight within its better and modified housing.
