Testing the RODE VideoMic Go 2 with the iPhone 15 Pro Max via USB vs internal mics, Apple LOG to 709 David Harry Uncut 2024-10-30 | This is a test of the RODE VideoMic GO 2 with the iPhone 15 Pro Max with the mic connected via USB-C and using a -20db PAD that can be programmed in the mic via the RODE app. While the -20db PAD makes this mic super useful, the PAD function is only available over USB and not via the mic's 3.5mm analogue output.I also recorded this test using Apple LOG and then just done a straight automatic gamma transform to rec.709 in DaVinci Resolve using Resolve's managed colour space option.Sorry for not warning about the swearing in this video. However, I am actually impressed with the overall quality of the exposure and quality, for a phone.This was the Apple Camera app in fully auto using the main 24mm camera lens on the rear.The audio was the built in mics. I centred one channel of the stereo recording, limited it to raise its level and rode the level when turning the phone around to even out the level as the dialogue dropped off when behind the phone.The recording was not in ProRes, as I said in the video, it was H.265 or HEVC in 4K UHD at 24FPS.The upload file was an export from DaVinci Resolve using H.265 and the Apple hardware encoder. The video bitrate was 100,000Kb/s with a slow two pass and in 10 Bit 4:2:0. My second pair of Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X headphones have fallen apart - Time to change brands? David Harry Uncut 2024-10-04 | I love the sound out of my Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X headphones but they have a bad design as far as the foam cushion for the headband is concerned.These are my second pair of DT 700 Pro Xs and the exact same thing has happened and the foam pad on the headband has fallen apart. I would be less critical if I were putting undue stress on the headphones. However, they are permanently at my work table, connected to my monitor for general playback or connected to my audio interface for mixing. They most certainly aren't being used outside of what they were designed for.While I have no problem with the rest of the construction of the headphones and as I've already said, I love their sound. While the iPhone 16 Pro Max still suffers the problems of the iPhone 15 pro max for skin tones and there doesn't seem to be any major noticeable difference between the two phones. I do have a lot of time for the main 24mm when left at 24mm. Testing Apple ProRes LOG with the Blackmagic Camera App & iPhone 15 Pro Max 24mm Main Lens & Camera David Harry Uncut 2023-09-27 | Just testing the Apple ProRes LOG codec on the iPhone 15 Pro Max using the BlackMagic Camera App.Although I don't usually shoot any LOG formats and I don't ever picture correct "grade" anything in my videos. This Apple LOG format for ProRes is very interesting and definitely gets around the orange skin tones.This shot is just pure practice and experimentation as I try to work out some curve settings in DaVinci Resolve Studio. It's obviously not perfect, however, a million times better than GoPro LOG. Which is very surprising as both cameras only have small sensors.It was very cloudy and raining. iPhone 15 Pro Max Video Camera Test For Vlogging With Internal Microphones David Harry Uncut 2023-09-24 | My first test clips for vlogging on the iPhone 15 Pro Max and using the internal microphones.I tested the front facing selfie camera, the main rear camera at 24mm and the ultra wide camera. Using ProRes 422 HQ as the video recording codec, recorded internally. The recordings are 4K 25FPS. All cameras were set to fully automatic and I used the standard stabilisation (the lowest variation of the stabilisation). GoPro Hero 12 Serious Blur & Soft Focus Problem With GoPro LOG - Full Test Soon & Downloadable Clips David Harry Uncut 2023-09-17 | The GoPro Hero 12 Black has serious problems with its GoPro LOG mode - GP LOG -In these quick examples you can see just how blurry the GoPro LOG footage is, it's as if the GoPro Hero 12 lens is out of focus, or the footage looks like low resolution. In any event, the end result is a total lack of definition in the footage.When adding a GoPro LOG LUT for transforming the clip to a standard rec.709 gamma response, the clips are still blurry, soft focused. Not just that, but both the GoPro LUTs just make the colour a different kind of bad.Don't make the mistake of assuming that this GoPro LOG footage needs sharpening in post. No amount of sharpening helps the footage and just completely destroys it.These clips were recorded in 5.3K 25FPS high bit rate.These clips were recorded fully automatic, so the GoPro Hero 12 should have accounted for the correct exposure that it needed for GoPro LOG. However, this GoPro LOG footage looks very under exposed. Plus the un-transformed original GoPro LOG footage does not have the look that you would typically expect with a LOG format.I will be doing a full test video showing this problem in more detail with a number of different examples. I will also provide links to some downloadable GoPro LOG video files used in that video for anyone who would like to test the footage themselves.Here's the section in a video that used some of these clips. You will also see a comparison with the GoPro Standard colour profile and the GoPro HDR profile. Im totally disappointed with GoPro and the Hero 12 David Harry Uncut 2023-09-15 | Having just received my new GoPro Hero 12 black and recording my first test and vlog. I am totally disappointed with GoPro and the Hero 12.Overall, it is not the improvement over the Hero 11 Black that many YouTubers or GoPro are making out, or at least in my opinion.In fully automatic mode and standard colour profile, the Hero 12 is not as good as the Hero 11. The Hero 12 also has more sensor noise in this most basic of recording modes, which is how most people will use a Hero action camera.What was really shocking was the differences between the GoPro standard colour profile, the new GoPro HDR mode and the new GP LOG, GoPro LOG mode.Compared to the standard mode, which isn't as good overall as the Hero 11 anyway. The HDR mode has even more noise in the picture. There were many things I simply forgot to mention in my summary, one of those being what looks like excessive over sharpening in HDR. The new GoPro LOG mode is completely broken as far as I'm concerned. It looks way under exposed. It does not seem to have any of the typical LOG gamma characteristics that you'd usually expect in typical LOG gamma formats on other cameras. It definitely does not have anything like the usual flat look that you'd expect from typical LOG formats.The worst thing about GoPro LOG is that it is has absolutely no definition to it. It is very blurry, looking like the camera is out of focus. Even applying sharpening in post I couldn't get any of the definition or resolution back without destroying the picture.GoPro do not even have any official transformer LUTs available for GoPro LOG to rec.709 gamma, so you at least have a good starting point in post and a grade. Or at least none I could find, even after an extensive Google search.Another thing that I forgot to mention in the video was that the FOV changed from linear to wide when changing the picture profiles. This is something that I only noticed in post. This was not a huge problem for this type of video but would be if you were shooting something more serious and needed continuity in your FOV.Again, there are many other problems that I noticed but I'm simply too deflated with my first use of this camera to even care.Although I said in the video that I will give the Hero 12 more time over the next dew days. In all honesty, I think I will just be wasting my time and I may simply return the Hero 12 back to GoPro for a refund as soon as possible.I don't usually give absolutes and never feel too comfortable saying never, unless I'm absolutely sure. However, right now, I'm seriously tempted to say that I will never buy another GoPro Hero action camera. Unless GoPro make serious efforts to move forward in the future with the Hero. It is likely that the 11 could be my last one. Which will be very sad as the Hero has been one of my favourite and most used camera series ever. This new feature will allow up to 4K 60FPS ProRes to be recorded direct to an external USB C SSD that's connected to the new USB C port on both the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max.Unfortunately, the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus will not have this new video recording feature. Why the iPhone 15 And iPhone 15 Plus Have Slow USB C Data Speeds - Apple Made Them Slow Deliberately David Harry Uncut 2023-09-13 | So, why do the new Apple iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 plus have such slow USB C data speeds? It's simply because Apple made them that way by design and there was absolutely no reason why the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus couldn't have been faster, at 10Gb/s, just like the new iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.Yes, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus both use the A16 Bionic processor SoC System on Chip. Which was originally designed for older iPhones that only had the Lightening interface, which was essentially USB 2 and only running at 480Mb/s. So you may reasonably think that it's this USB controller limitation of the A16 Bionic SoC that's the genuine reason why the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are so slow with their data transfer speeds, even though they have a USB C socket.However, given that Apple have made other USB C devices, such as the iPad Mini Gen 6, which used the older A15 Bionic processors but were able to operate at faster 5Gb/s USB C speeds. When other Apple devices, such as the iPhones 13, used the same A15 Bionic at 480Mb/s. There's no reason why Apple couldn't not have had faster data speeds on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.In the video I think I say the iPad Mini 6 had the A13, that was a mistake that makes no difference to the points being made. The A16 is a newer SoC compared to either the A13 or A15 anyway and is a more capable chip.As far as I'm concerned, this is just Apple once again deliberately limiting the functionality of their hardware, essentially forcing an up-sell to a more expensive product. The only real difference between the Hero 11 and Hero 12 will be software and hardware.Given that the "new" updates on the Hero 12, such as GoPro LOG or GP LOG, and a bunch of other stuff such as holding the Hero in landscape to shoot portrait, could have been applied to the Hero 11 with a software and firmware update. Do you think that GoPro are going to give some of these "new" Hero 12 update features in future firmware and software updates for the Hero 11?I doubt very much that GoPro will give the Hero 11 any of the main new features found on the Hero 12 in future updates. So this effectively kills off the the Hero 11 and makes it EOL (end of life) within a year of release. GoPro Hero 12 is a HACKED Hero 11 - GoPro Have Done This Before With The Hero 5 & Hero 2018 - SNEAKY David Harry Uncut 2023-09-06 | GoPro Hero 11 vs GoPro Hero 12 should be a complete no brainer. Similar optimisations to other aspects of the Heroes computing hardware could also result in minor tweaked updates to the stabilisation.This optimisation of software and especially hardware via firmware, is something we see all the time in other computing devices. So there is no real reason why GoPro couldn't do this with the Hero series.What also drives my suspicions is that GoPro already have form for deliberately crippling, nobbling and limiting of their Hero cameras' functionality. When the Hero 5 was released GoPro also had another camera at the time, the Hero 2018. The Hero 2018 was essentially sold as a lower tier Hero to compliment the Hero 5 at a cheaper price point, with the Hero 2018 having less features and options.It was soon found out that the Hero 2018 was a hardware limited version of the Hero 5. Basically, the Hero 2018 had all the electronic hardware of the Hero 5 but had a firmware that limited its functions. A short time after the release of these cameras someone had hacked and cracked the firmware of the Hero 5 so that it would install onto a Hero 2018, giving the Hero 2018 the functionality of the Hero 5. Essentially allowing people buy the cheaper Hero 2018 and turn it into a Hero 5. This "hacked" firmware/software may even have been a very costly accidental leak from GoPro themselves.Below are some links to articles and videos about this hack that you may find interesting. However my point here is this. GoPro clearly have form for such skullduggery, so is it a stretch for me to suggest that this is what they've done between the Hero 11 and Hero 12. As in, limited the functionality of the firmware and software updates for the Hero 11 that would give it the necessary optimisations to allow it the functions we are seeing on the Hero 12. Then just apply these firmware and software updates for optimisation to the same 11 hardware and call it a new "updated" Hero action camera, as in, the Hero 12.Even if this is the case, it's unlikely that we will see any hacked firmware or software from the Hero 12 for the Hero 11. How To Mount A Microphone To Your Head For The Best Close Mic Voice Over Position, The MicHat By CMI David Harry Uncut 2023-09-01 | How To Mount A Microphone To Your Head For The Best Close Mic Voice Over Position, The MicHat By CMI 🤣So in this video I'm showing you something that you may only a crazy person would do and that is to mount an XLR studio condenser microphone to your head.While the idea may sound a bit a mad and it may look like you've lost the plot. There's no arguing against the fact that this position really does work.So the idea for this mic position is to get the best position for a close mic which is ideally suited to voice over. Or more importantly, an off camera voice over, as you would look like a complete tool doing this on camera.The main reason for trying this out was so I could get the most even pick up and recording level for my rostrum overhead shots when doing product reviews etc. And this position is also great for recording dialogue when doing computer screen capture, video game capture or any number of other applications that suit this mic position.With the microphone capsule being at a constant distance from your mouth, it helps in a number of ways. It helps to reject as much room ambience as possible because the microphone and the capsule are so close to your mount. It helps to maintain a constant dialogue and record level because the microphone and capsule are constantly positioned relative to your mouth no matter what your movements are. And this close position also helps to give you the best sound possible from your mic, as long as the position is good for your mic.The main advantage here is that your voice and dialogue are always in an ideal for the cardioid pattern pick up of the microphone. In which case, the subscription is excellent value for money as far as replacements are concerned.My point of view on all this is really clear. DIY Condenser Microphone Modification VS The Sure SM7B, Maono PM500 Capsule 512 Audio Limelight Body David Harry Uncut 2023-08-11 | DIY Condenser Microphone Modification VS The Sure SM7B - Maono PM500 Capsule Inside A 512 Audio Limelight Body.So this is one of my DIY condenser microphone modification being compared to the Sure SM7B.For this particular modification the capsule and power/preamp board are from the Maono PM500 and the body that I’m using is from a 512 Audio Limelight microphone. The Limelight microphone was originally a dynamic.The reason for this modification was because I liked the sound of the Maono PM500 but it is a side address microphone and I much prefer end address microphones for on camera talking and podcasting, vlogging etc. Or for anything were the microphone is in the shot when talking into the mic.Putting the guts of the PM500 inside the Limelight body, gives me an end address microphone with a cardioid condenser capsule that I like.Although I did receive both the Maono and 512 Audio mics for free. If I were to have paid for these mics, specifically to have done this modification, both mics would have cost me about £150. In the UK the Maono sells for anywhere between £70 to £100 and the Limelight costs anywhere between £40 to £100. If you find deals on both mics, you could pick them up for less than £150.Even at £150, some people may think that’s expensive. However, considering that the SM7B is now around £150 and sometimes edges more toward £400. If the sound of the modded is more preferable to the SM7B, then by comparison the modded mic is much cheaper and less than half the price. Plus, you realistically do have to spend more on the SM7B as well as it usually needs an in-line preamp to get the best out if. In this test I was using a Triton Fethead with the SM7B, so the price of the SM7B is really over £400.Being honest, I do prefer the sound of the modded mic. While the SM7B isn’t a bright sounding mic and is actually good for a voice like mine which is quite sibilant. To my surprise, the modded mic sounds more rounded, more weighty in the bottom end and even better for sibilance. If I didn't know which mic was which in this test, I would have thought that the results would have been the other way around. As the modded mic sounded more like I’d imagine an SM7B to sound, at least to me.Anyway. NEW GoPro Pro CAMERA and it’s not a Hero or action camera David Harry Uncut 2023-08-09 | Are GoPro making or about to release a new pro vlogging creator camera, not a Hero or action camera?So, based on all the BS speculation recently on YouTube with the Hero 12 having a 1 inch sensor etc. And because the CEO of GoPro mentioned, last year, that they were going to start development of a professional camera system. I'm now speculating that GoPro may be ready, or in development of, a new camera that's not a Hero or an action camera.My guess is a camera that's gong to be around the $1000 mark. Something that's functionally and physically similar to something like a Sony ZV-1. This is using the Holland Lark C1 wireless microphone set.Interestingly, the playback of the audio is really loud, this is actually the automatically recorded level after I set the Flip 5 to -12db in its pro mode. The level you are hearing on YouTube has not been gained at all by me. In fact, I had to reduce it by a fraction of a db do that it didn't clip the channel.Although I really like the Flip phone series, I'm not sure if I will keep the Flip 5. Don't get me wrong, it's a brilliant little phone and very powerful but I was expecting DeX to be on this phone and it isn't. So other than a more powerful processor and the new cover screen, it's not a huge difference from the Flip 4.There are of course a bunch of other improvements with the Flip 5 that do make it stand out from the Flip 4. However, if you have a Flip 4, I wouldn't recommend upgrading to the Flip 5, unless your in the States where you get an insane trade-in.As for the cameras and their differences between the Flip 4 and the Flip 5. They are physically the same cameras, although, the more powerful processor in the Flip 5 may end up making a difference due to computational photography etc.That all said. I think both the Flip 5 and Flip 4 are great vlogging devices and great for daily snaps etc. They are seriously powerful, really small and have good cameras. In the video I test the front camera and rear wide and ultra wide cameras and I'm specifically testing the internal microphones for dialogue recording for vlogging.I also test a little bit for field of view FoV and also test for depth of field FoV to see which lenses help blur out the background.The stabilisation used was the standard stabilisation. In the description for that video, I explained in a bit more detail why these things would be the wrong thing to do for a GoPro. However, seeing as no one ever reads my video descriptions and I did make some good points in the description, I’ve decided to make this video explaining the relationship of a video camera’s sensor size to its depth of field.Plus, I’ve already the usual YouTube knob heads trying to give what for in the comments because they are too dumb to understand some basic physics. So, this video should also help to explain why those knob heads are so dumb.Anyway, here’s what was said in that video’s description and there will also be a link to that video.Why we don't want a GoPro Hero 12 Black with a 1 inch sensor and 8K video resolutionJust my thoughts on the rumours that the GoPro Hero 12 Black is going to have a 1 inch sensor and a resolution of 8K and why we definitely don't want or need this.Here's the bottom line. For a fixed aperture and focal length, increasing the sensor size will change the depth of field. Even with a variable aperture and focal length to compensate for focus with a larger sensor, you will have a longer, increased minimum focus distance for an infinite focus.Don't forget, a GoPro Hero action camera has a fixed aperture and focal length. So, without changing the size of the GoPro camera body. Increasing the sensor size, regardless of compensating for focus distance with any combination of fixed aperture and fixed focal length. Your minimum focus distance will increase and get further away from the lens. This will mean that close objects and subjects, such as a person vlogging, will be out of focus.Were as, for the exact same camera but with a smaller sensor, the minimum focus distance will be shorter and closer to the lens. Meaning that objects or subjects, such as a person vlogging, will be in focus.Also don't forget. The entire point to every GoPro Hero action camera that there has ever been. Is to have a camera with infinite focus. Or the widest possible depth of field with the most minimal of minimum focus distances possible. Basically, all GoPro Hero action cameras have been designed to get as much of the field of view in focus.Changing anything about a GoPro Hero action camera such as its body size to compensate for any larger components, giving it a variable focus length lens (zoom), the ability to change aperture and a manual focus system. Will mean that such a camera will no longer be a GoPro Hero action camera and it will become something else. maybe a GoPro Pro Camera.As for a larger sensor such as a one inch sensor or 1" sensor. In practice, yes, if you maintain the same resolution compared to a smaller sensor, you will increase the size of its photosites (pixels) and therefore their surface area. Which will increase the light gathering (photons) ability of the sensor and it "should" be better for lower light scenarios.However, increasing the resolution to 8K on a one inch sensor will mean 4x the photosites compared to a 4K one inch sensor. Which means smaller photosites, where each photosite receives less light and therefore, with all things being equal, means worse low light performance.Increasing to a one inch sensor at 8K with a camera the size of a GoPro Hero 12, assuming it's going to be the same size as the Hero 11. Will put way more thermal stress on the camera and will increase temperatures and cause a whole heap of problems and this is something that will definitely piss off Chris Tomo. 8-bit vs 10-bit On A GoPro Hero 11 makes no difference and this is the same with the DJI Action 4 David Harry Uncut 2023-08-02 | 8-bit vs 10-bit On A GoPro Hero 11 makes no difference and this is the same with the DJI Action 4Just a couple of simple examples to show you that there is no difference between the same scene being shot in 8 bit and 10 bit on a GoPro Hero 11 Black and how it looks after the 8 Bit and 10 Bit footage has been uploaded to YouTube.This is because YouTube will re-encode to an 8 Bit codec anyway and any colour range advantage that 10 Bit may have, will be lost as YouTube will truncate the 10 Bit bit-depth to 8 Bit.What I'm showing here also applies to the new DJI Action 4 action camera. It too will have no difference between 8 Bit and 10 Bit for direct cursing and uploading to the likes of YouTube or any 8 Bit platform or target.Even in my examples of grading, and I obviously use the term "grading" very loosely 😆 There wasn't even that much in it at my end on a 10 bit monitor and there will be absolutely no difference after YouTube had done its thing to that footage.You obviously do have an advantage when your entire production workflow and target are 10 bit. But this only makes sense when using high quality cameras, sensors, lenses etc. And you have a workflow that properly utilises the advantage of 10 Bit.Proper grading would also require 10 Bit as a minimum but as we seen in this example, the 10 Bit source not only made no difference to the final YouTube video but it didn't make much difference in a native 10 Bit workflow and 10 Bit monitoring anyway.So next time one of these bogus BS YouTubers, like @DavidManningvlog starts telling you that 10 Bit is just better. How To Use A Sure SM7B Just Like A PRO GAMER 🤣 David Harry Uncut 2023-07-31 | How To Use A Sure SM7B Just Like A PRO GAMER 🤣So in this video I’m positioning the Sure SM7B in the classic pro gamer position 😂 Although I had initially thought that this position was a bad position, I thought that I’d give it a try before dismissing it, as it is popular with gamers.Maybe this position was better for plosives and that’s why the pro gamers do it. Well, the answer to that is no. It’s actually more susceptible to wind from your mouth as the microphone’s capsule is directly below your mouth. Maybe it’s better for Picture in Picture, maybe, if your PiP is in portrait, but I’ve never seen portrait being used by gamers for their corner PiP. Their PiPs are usually more of a square aspect ratio or a wide horizontal aspect ratio and not a tall vertical aspect ratio.The bass end of the tone actually drops off slightly in this position, at least for me. This example of the XM8500 is to give you an idea of how it sounds connected directly to a Sony ZV1 using an XLR to 3.5mm microphone cable. The test part of this video was originally a preliminary test for myself but as I was very impressed with the mic, for what it is, I decided to post the results.In the video I also test the K669D with a cheap inline preamplifier, the Manayo DM3. However the K669D easily has enough gain on its output to be used without an inline preamp.I also tryout the RODE WS2 foam filter with the K699D as some of the positions I try the K669D in, meant that I was going to plosive the microphone.For the £36 I paid for it I have absolutely no complaints. Is it the best podcast microphone in the world? No. However, for a cheap dynamic microphone it sounds a lot better than many others out there.Is it the best sounding microphone in the world? No. But its sound is definitely way better than to be expected for such a cheap microphone.For an entry level into microphones, podcasting, vlogging and a microphone for YouTube videos. How I make my audio sound louder on YouTube with LoudMax free VST limiter plugin in DaVinci Resolve David Harry Uncut 2023-07-17 | How I make my audio sound louder on YouTube with LoudMax free VST limiter plugin in DaVinci ResolveA quick shout out to Tone @TonesAdventuresHD because he's cool as F... 😆👍So in this video I'm showing how I process my audio with a limiter to make it sound louder when I upload my video files to YouTube. This video is for my YouTube buddy @christomo although it may be useful for anyone who comes along this video.The way I increase my audio level is to use a limiter for gain reduction and re-summing. This limiter is the LoudMax VST plugin. While I'm using LoudMax in DaVinci Resolve Studio, it is compatible with any VST compliant software, such as compatible editing software such as Premiere Pro, Avid etc. And I think FCP Final Cut Pro is also compatible.I'm on Mac with my DaVinci Resolve Studio, although you can use LoudMax on Windows as well and I think maybe even Linux.So basically what happens with a limiter is that you reduce, or limit, the maximum dynamic range of the audio being limited by so many decibels. At this point you don't actually change the overall level of the audio, or its loudness.Then you re-sum or re-gain the overall level of the audio by the amount you have limited by. For instance, assuming your audio was already peaking at just under 0db you may apply the limiting to stop all the dynamics of the audio at -9db and then re-gain or higher up the audio by +9db. This means that you have effectively made your audio or mix 9db louder. This is basically gain reduction and re-summing.What I've just described is the use of a limiter in my example in this video.Audio limiting is very similar to audio compression and both have many uses in various parts of the audio chain and audio and sound production. From recording to mixing to mastering etc. Both limiting and compression are audio dynamics processing, essentially, basically, things to do with level and loudness.A limiter and/or compressor can be used either technically or creatively and are both fundamental processes and tools to limit or compress audio at various stages of audio production.Just don't forget to not overdo your limiting and compression or you will end up destroying not only the dynamics of your audio but also its fundamental tonal characteristics. Overdoing compression especially, can also alter the tone of your audio. Using limiting and compression within reason, should not alter your tone too much, just its perception, as loudness alters perception of tone.Saying that, you can go absolutely mad with limiting and compression and deliberately destroy your audio if the end result helps with your creative endeavours.Here's the link for LoudMax. Using a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra for video & vloggingSo, are we now at, or nearing the point where a smartphone can take on your video camera or stills camera? With the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, I don't think that we are too far away from the point where a flagship smartphone is able to replace a basic video camera and stills photo camera. Maybe the next generation of smartphones is where we start seeing the tipping point!While this test was cut short by the nasty weather and the storm which was brewing in the distance. I think the shots are very convincing of just how far smartphones have come and those boring locked off test shots at the end do have a really nice quality to them. There is also a surprising amount of bokeh with the cameras/lenses on this phone, especially the main rear wide 8K camera.Also, some of these shots are in 4K and some are in 8K and all shot at 30FPS. There's a title in the top right of the screen indicating the resolution of the shot on screen. Whatever!!!The one thing that is very obvious is that comparing a Behringer Ultravoice XM8500 against a Sure SM7B should be a very unfair comparison. But is it?Both of these microphones are XLR microphones. They both have a great build, with full metal bodies. They are both dynamic microphones and they both share other similar characteristics. However, they are poles apart when it comes to price.By rights, the Behringer XM8500 at $25 should sound obviously inferior to the $400 Sure SM7B in many ways. But the reality is that the main thing that will probably define the difference between these two microphones is your personal preference, because the XM8500 is not a million miles away from the SM7B.Shure (pun intended 🤣) the SM7B may have the edge in certain ways as far as tonal quality is concerned but this, once again, is really down to personal preference. My personal opinion is that the XM8500 is the best budget microphone available. While it is easily good enough for professional voice and dialogue use and is also a great all-round budget studio microphone for anyone with professional audio production experience. It is definitely an awesome option for anyone new to microphones and audio and is also a great starter microphone for anyone getting into making YouTube videos or podcasting and vlogging.It's also worth noting that the XM8500 has a louder output compared to the SM7B, or what many people call sensitivity. This means that you do not need to amplify and gain the XM8500 as much as the SM7B. And you most certainly do not need to use an in-line preamplifier such as a Cloudlifter or Fethead to pre-gain an XM8500, as you do with a SM7B. Which therefore makes the XM8500 an even cheaper option.You can even connect the XM8500 directly to the input of a video camera using an XLR to 3.5mm microphone cable and it will still enough output level to drive the input on a video camera. Here's a video where in the first par I'm doing that exact same thing.
