"I love just walking this property and listening to the sounds of the kids laughing, I love the sound of kids being outdoors and being active," said Jim Blake, the executive director of Alliance Redwoods.
"The overall experience is to help encourage one another to kind of grow as a person and to grow in confidence. And also, just have fun," added Emma Henderson, an outdoor educator for Alliance Redwoods. "That's a big part of what we do out here is to have a lot of fun."
The organization focuses on outdoor education for public and private schools amongst the majestic Redwoods.
"They’re looking at crawdads, and they’re doing geology, and face painting," described Blake. "We’ve got a reptile center, and so they’re learning through hands-on experiential learning in the outdoors."
Sonoma Zipline Adventures generates revenue to support Alliance Redwoods to help fund at-risk youth organizations. Sonoma Treehouse Adventures is another way to raise money to help provide camp to low-income and at-risk youth.

"Sometimes I feel like I’m living a dream," said Katsuyama. "I always wanted to start my own business."
Located in The Hatchery, a food and beverage incubator and production facility in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, Onigiri Kororin produces and packages six varieties of a comfort food called onigiri, a Japanese favorite of Katsuyama. Onigiri are seaweed wrapped rice balls that are similar to sushi but are filled with cooked fish and other ingredients.
"It’s really portable," said Cristina Tarriba, co-founder of Onigiri Kororin. "If you buy sushi from a supermarket or a grocery store you can’t just stick it in your backpack but with onigiri, you can."
Like Katsuyama, Tarriba immigrated to the United States to attend graduate school but came from Mexico. The two partnered up to launch a wholesale version of the business after a successful, five-week run selling onigiri directly to customers by preorder on Instagram.
"To have the opportunity to come to the US and to build the business has been a really wonderful experience," said Tarriba. "Sometimes it feels a little bit surreal."
Hunger and nostalgia drove Katsuyama to come up with the idea of making onigiri, which is also called omusubi.
"During the school days I always missed onigiri," said Katsuyama. "I was surprised that sushi and ramen were really popular here, but I couldn’t find onigiri."
The company’s team of workers and a custom machine imported from Japan can produce over 1,400 packaged onigiri in an hour. The plastic wrapped, triangular shaped products are then distributed to over 30 stores and specialty markets in Chicago, including Joong Boo Market and Dom’s Kitchen & Market.
"It’s definitely a really exciting time for the business," said Tarriba. "We do see this becoming available nationally eventually."
The company is named after a Japanese fable called Omusubi Kororin, which teaches a lesson about honesty and generosity. Katsuyama and Tarriba both see the business as a way to share the delight of Japanese comfort food to the community and they say they’re grateful for the support of Chicagoans in making Onigiri Kororin what it is today.
"It’s definitely a team and people and community effort building the business," said Tarriba. "For us in our journey it’s been crucial the people who have opened doors."

Regina Sanchez, founder of Finding a Best Friend Rescue, is on a mission to rehabilitate and find animals a home that they deserve.
Finding a Best Friend Rescue and nonprofit is based in Stockton, but rescues animals from Northern California to Mexico. The rescue is a foster home based rescue and depends the kind hearts of volunteers to provide a temporary home for animals in need.
"This is my purpose," said Sanchez. "I am trying to leave a footprint. I am trying to educate. I am trying to help as many animal lives that I can."
Sanchez grew up in an abusive household, but found comfort in her family dog, Thovie.
"We had a Doberman and he was just the best thing in the world," said Sanchez. "We were poor and there was a lot of abuse. Thovie was the one who never showed me that, he just showed me love."
In an unfortunate incident, Thovie was killed by a relative and turned Sanchez’s world upside down.
"The moment we lost him, it was as if we lost everything," said Sanchez."I knew that any animal that would come across my path was meant to be. Cause I knew that Thovie was going to bring them across my path."
Since 2007, Sanchez has saved hundreds of animals from abuse, neglect, and animals living in homeless encampments.
"These animals are severely abused," said Sanchez. "Whatever issue that they have that we see from the abuse, we address it."
Finding a Best Friend Rescue provides all wellness and medical services for all animals.
During the Covid-19 shutdown, adoption events were cancelled at retail pet stores. A rescue volunteer opened their home to host small adoptions to continue the efforts of the rescue.
"Anyone who adopts from us, you are part of our family now," said Sanchez. "We want you to know that we appreciate you and we love you because you love them the way they should have been loved from the beginning."
Saving animals from abuse and placing them into loving homes can be a lot of work. But Sanchez wouldn’t have it any other way.
"It just makes everything worth it in the end," said Sanchez." These wonderful adopters that treat their animals like family. You see these babies so happy and being so loved. It makes me feel tremendous satisfaction."
Animal rescue is expensive. For more information or to donate, visit the Finding a Best Friend Rescue website findingabestfriend.org

Mack moved to Texas in 1985 to take an unpaid internship in the youth department of a church. He needed to make money, so he also took a job as a custodian for Montgomery County.
Mack slowly worked his way up over the years, ultimately becoming Justice of the Peace for Montgomery County Precinct in 2014.
His career came full circle.
"The courthouse in Downtown Conroe was actually my assigned building," said Judge Mack. "In that same building they now call me judge."
Judge Mack says he still isn’t used to everyone standing when he enters a courtroom, but he’s thankful to be serving his community on a daily basis.Check us out on:

"I've always considered myself a leader," he said. "I like to be at the front of the crowd smiling and setting the expectations and setting the future."
Orlov says he was born to be an entrepreneur. He created his own technology business at 10 years old and used those skills to build a network of families looking to find summer activities for their children.
"With the pandemic, other day camps got canceled, so kids were looking for a place to have a great time," he said. "It took connections, clients and marketing, and now, we're rolling, kids are loving it and everyone's having a fantastic summer."
The teen from Lower Merion, Pennsylvania, is better known to friends and family as "Schmoopy." It's a nickname bestowed by his mother and inspired by the ABC sitcom, "The Goldbergs." That explains the name of Orlov's latest entrepreneurial venture, "Schmoopy's Beach Party."
Orlov leads children in games like flag football, dodgeball, spike ball, and wave riding. Located on the beach at New Haven Avenue in Ventnor, New Jersey, the beach party headquarters is marked with a large tent and activity directors dressed in unmistakable neon-green shirts.
"This camp has been an absolute lifesaver for Chase this summer," said Stacy Huttman about her son, who is a frequent participant at Schmoopy's Beach Party. "He doesn't know that many kids and he's at that in-between age where day camp isn't necessarily appropriate for him and yet, he doesn't want to leave to go to overnight camp."
Huttman says her 8th-grader comes home happy and eagerly awaits the next day at Schmoopy's.
"My son does not go in the ocean," she added. "Somehow, Ryan got Chase to go into the ocean this summer and he's been in every day since. So, as a mommy and as a parent, that in and of itself is worth its weight in gold."
Orlov says every kid's smile is worth the hard work. He is also proud to employ some of his close friends who are fellow graduates of the class of 2021.
"I feel like it's bigger than myself," he said. "I'm glad to be working with my best friends with the job I love. Everyone succeeds at the end of the day."
Orlov, who is from Lower Merion Township, Pennsylvania, hopes to continue succeeding as a student at Tulane University in Louisiana. He will study entrepreneurship and communications with a minor in real estate. He will also continue to be involved in baseball, having played catcher for USA Baseball's NTIS Team Freedom.
With hard work, Orlov plans to continue his summer camp for years to come. In the meantime, this year's program will run until August 7. To learn more about Schmoopy's Beach Party, visit their website.

The Chicago icon began his career as a tamale vendor over 20 years ago and has gained the love and respect from many Chicagoans. He’s made his way all over the city selling his tamales to bar and restaurant goers.
"He’s become known as the Santa Claus for the drunk and hungry," said Osmar Abad Cruz, son and now business partner of Velez.
Velez and Abad Cruz have established a new LLC, The Authentic Tamale Guy. Abad Cruz said it’s a family-run business.
This comes after Velez cut ties with his business partners Pierre and Kristin Vega back in March due to legal issues. Velez and the Vega’s opened up a storefront in the Ukrainian Village in August of 2020.
Velez said when the city shut down due to the pandemic, the community raised over $36,000 when he couldn’t sell his tamales. He used some of that money to open up the restaurant with is ex business partners.
During the pandemic, Velez was hospitalized because of the virus. The community backed him again and raised over $56,000 for his medical expenses.
"He’s healthy now, he is happy and he wants to continue making his tamales, he’s going to continue to the bars and eventually we want to open up his own brick and mortar which he deserves," said Abad Cruz.

Buried in Olivewood, many who helped build Houston. At least ten souls that schools are named after as well as Doctors, Lawyers, Church and city leaders. Descendants of Olivewood researcher Paul Jennings says "We wouldn't recognize today's Houston without the contribution of these people. Many didn't make it into the history books, but Olivewood is their history book."
In 1999 Margott Williams' grandmother passed, Margott wanted her buried by her Grandfather Cain Howard Nelson Sr. When she arrived at Olivewood she couldn't locate her grandfather's gravesite. After years of neglect, Olivewood was buried under a massive canopy of vegetation. When Williams could not locate the owners of the cemetery she decided to do the work herself. Williams says "I always thought the people buried here, they deserved more respect than they were getting."
In 2004 Williams and others formed the Descendants of Olivewood to take care of the cemetery. Every other Saturday you can find the Descendants and other volunteers mowing the grass, cutting down bush and preserving the historic site. It is an on-going restoration that is a labor of love. Williams loves it when families come out to Olivewood looking for their family members, "to make that connection with them and see that look on their face, it's priceless, it's priceless."

Growing up and taking swimming lessons lead her to swim in college, and that's when Lamonier started to noticed the lack of Black people in the water.
"The stereotype that Black people don’t swim is clearly racist," said Lamonier, who discovered this stereotype from her clients, who she would be giving swimming lessons.
"It stems from slavery they were trying to keep Black People away from water for a number of reasons, so they don’t run away. As time goes on and as Black people started to get more freedom, they were finding ways to keep Black people still out of the water," said Lamonier.
In 2019, Lamonier took to social media to pledge that she was going to teach 30 Black people how to swim after having success with one of her first clients 31-year-old, Yolelda Ira.
Her tweet went viral, with many people of color retweeting and sharing their own personal fears and stories when it came to the stereotype of Black People not being able to swim.
"This movement is important," said Ira, who is now on her sixth lesson with Lamonier and, since starting her lessons, has felt more comfortable at the pool.
"She is bringing it forward and giving people the opportunity that they never grew up with. I just pray that in the future this company will go and more people will take advantage of learning how to swim and breaking the stereotype," said Ira.

The Proud Bird, an option at Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant, takes their trademark chicken and places it on a 12 inch bun with lettuce, mayonnaise, with a side of French fries.
"The chicken is delicious. It's nice and juicy. It's crunchy. It's flavorful. It's got a good amount of kick to it. It's awesome!" exclaimed Bert Chan of Queens, NY.
The Super Fun Bun, the final gigantic offering for Knott's 100th Anniversary, combines four of the fan-favorite Fun Bun before it’s deep fried and then met with a layer of boysenberry glaze.

"We are the kickoff to the summer" said Jonathan Swain, founder of Hyde Park Summer Fest.
Since its debut eight years ago, Hyde Park Summer Fest has made a name for itself in the Chicagoland festival scene. Bringing together diverse groups of people all to one space to have a great time. Originally
named Hyde Park Brew Fest, the celebration started off at the iconic 53rd & Harper Ct, but since have moved a few blocks away at Midway Plaisance.
"In 2014 we started doing a craft beer sampling in the neighborhood, in a parking lot, about 500 people and we evolved to a larger street festival, and we kept growing" said Jonathan Swain.
This year’s Summer Fest will be one to remember with the much-anticipated reunion of Clipse. Hyde Park summer fest also will perform a special tribute celebrating the 50th year anniversary of Hip Hop
with their Ode to Hip-Hop, which will feature Chicago’s iconic artists such as Crucial Conflict, Do or Die, Shawana, and Twista.
Chicago’s rap pioneer, Twista, known for his quick flow says that initially he didn’t intend to become the world’s fastest rapper, but that creativity was the goal.
"One day I wanted to make styles and rhythms, and kind of become another instrument to the music" said Twista.
"As I grew as a person, as a man and started to realize that I was an influence and a role model, then I wanted to change the narrative a little bit. And that’s when I started creating songs like, "Hope".
That really showed me the power of music on a positive level and from that point on, I always wanted to make a positive impact with it" said Twista.
With hits such as "Overnight celebrity" and "Slow Jamz", Twista says that it will be a walking time machine once he hits the stage in front of his hometown crowd.
Hyde Park Summer Fest is not only making an impact on the stage, but off the stage as well, with their community talent showcase for up-and-coming Chicago talent.
Local artists can submit demo tapes for a chance to perform during Hyde Park Summer Fest. Fifteen finalists will be judged by a committee of members within the music industry. The winners of the showcase will have an exciting opportunity to perform on stage during the two-day festival.
"We want to give opportunities to shine for those upcoming artists that we hope will soon be those who are selling and filling out stadiums," said Jonathan Swain.
Rising artists such as Mother Nature, a Chicago female Hip-Hop duo, are set to perform in front of their hometown crowd. And they’re expecting to leave fans with a performance to remember.
"It’s going to be healing, it’s going to be powerful, it’s going to be something that you can leave with, you know, better than you came" said Klevah, of Mother Nature.
The female Hip-Hop duo are also impacting the community with their MisEducation of Hip-Hop youth program. The program focuses on self-esteem, healing traumas, and building dreams for students.
"The MisEducation of Hip Hop is exactly how it sounds. We go into the classrooms, middle school, high school, college, and we break down to build up. So, we have conversations around Hip-Hop. We speak on
dreams, the things we’re passionate about, the things we envision for ourselves" said Klevah of Mother Nature.
Over the years, Hyde Park Summer Fest has continued to highlight Chicago’s influence on the music industry and culture, while changing the narrative about Chicago’s south side.
"People think that there are certain parts of the city that are less safe than others. Yes, we do have challenges in our city, but I think there is also pockets in our city, including parts of the south side that
are wonderful neighborhoods where people come to live, work, and shop and have a great time" said Jonathan Swain, founder of Hyde Park Summer Fest.
"We want to continue to produce a quality festival, quality event, this is something that they’re proud of to have in their city and in their community." said Jonathan Swain, founder of Hyde Park Summer Fest.
Hyde Park Summer Fest takes place June 17th -18th at Midway Plaisance. For more information on Hyde Park Summer Fest’s lineup and tickets, visit www.hydeparksummerfest.com.

"After I read his memoir "Back From The Dead" I was like okay I'm totally in," said James, who followed Walton's career as a young player himself. "I think he's had just a remarkable life."
The ESPN 30 For 30 docuseries, titled "The Luckiest Guy In The World," tracks Walton's winning streaks through high school and at UCLA to his successful but injury-filled career in the NBA.
"This is a guy who during the course of a 14-year NBA career played a total of about 4 years," said James. "He's been through a lot in his life, but he's come to this belief that he's 'the luckiest guy in the world.'"
James says the gregarious and verbose Walton that basketball fans know today is in stark contrast to his early days as a shy and withdrawn player battling a stutter.
"The young Bill, he did not like to do interviews if you believe that now," said James. "It's like for the first part of Bill's life, he didn't speak and once he got over his stutter, he has not stopped talking since."
The docuseries will also cover Walton's outspoken views on the Vietnam War and his undying love of the psychedelic rock group The Grateful Dead. James says current NBA watchers may mostly know Walton for his broadcasting career, but he's hoping to shed light on his dominance as a player.
"A lot of young basketball fans have no idea what a great player he was," said James. "When he was healthy he was one of the great players in the game."
Episodes 1 and 2 of ESPN 30 For 30: The Luckiest Guy In The World premiere Tuesday, June 6 at 7 p.m. CT followed by episodes 3 and 4 on Tuesday, June 13 at 7 p.m. Episodes will be made available on ESPN+ immediately after their premiere. Disney is the parent company of ABC, ABC Localish, and ESPN.

Bay Area art collective, FoldHaus, will have their large-scale origami artwork "Shrumen Lumen" on display through Labor Day.
"Our work is inspired by nature," said Jesse Silver, Artist of FoldHaus. "We always take that cue and blow it out of proportion a little bit."
Shrumen Lumen is an art display of kinetic mushrooms filled with LED Lights and expand up 14 feet.
"We’re a collective, we all come together to build these crazy pieces of art and come from all different communities and build towards a central purpose," said Silver. "It takes a lot of different skills to make these pieces. We have electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, (and) we have people writing custom software to do the show controls for the motion and the lights."
Most of FoldHaus’ artwork is made with corrugated plastic, aluminum, steel, LED lights, and more.
FoldHaus originally created their art for Burning Man, an annual event held in Black Rock Desert, Nevada.
"It has to be able to survive fairly strong winds. We design this (Shrumen Lumen) to survive a desert environment where the wind might be blowing 60-70 miles an hour," said Silver. "We also choose this material because light shines through it in a very beautiful way. It diffuses the light. So, when it gets darker the entire material kind of lights up and all of the folds create these beautiful gradients of color."
Everyone who has worked on a FoldHaus art piece, volunteers their time and skills. Up to fifty people have worked on one-single art piece to bring the vision together.
"I think the biggest learning from all of our pieces is that if you have a community that is interested in making a vision come true, and you just sort of pursue it step-by-step you actually can make anything that you imagine," said Silver. "If you are all just committed to the vision and have a passion for it. You can just make it happen."
In the past seven years, FoldHaus’ artwork was displayed in museums and music festivals all over the world.
"We could have never imagined that our pieces would end up in museums and end up travelling the world," said Silver. "It really creates this sense of joy for all of us to watch people be delighted by our art. There’s this great sense of joy in being able to accomplish these things together and really we do this because it’s fun for us."
Shrumen Lumen is temporarily displayed in Downtown Danville through Labor Day. Check out the illuminated mushrooms in front of the Village Theatre and the Danville Library.

Home to more than 3,000 creatures with approximately 100 species, SEA LIFE Aquarium allows visitors to engage in interactive experiences, educating guests about the ocean, its inhabitants, and future preservation.
"This aquarium is unlike any other! Our theme reflects the location we're in so for instance, our ocean tank has iconic New York buildings all throughout the tank, and most of our exhibits have that whimsical feel as a homage to the area that we're in," said Rich Weddle, Curator at SEA LIFE Aquarium.
From sharks to stingrays, eels, seahorses, jellyfish, and piranhas, visitors of all ages can expect to learn and engage with these fascinating marine creatures.
Inside the aquarium’s leading exhibit: a 186,000-gallon ocean tank, you’ll admire panoramic views of fish, sharks, and other animals swimming in a 'fishified’ Manhattan, depicting landmarks such as the 'Coralizer Building’ (Chrysler Building) and Times Square.
"We have 24 exhibits throughout the aquarium that have animals from all over the world. A lot of our exhibits are built-in with popup windows, where guests can get their heads up inside and feel like they're part of the tank itself," said Weddle.
The aquarium, which prides itself in its unique theme rather than recreating a slice of nature, is opened Monday thru Sunday from 10:00 am until 6:30 pm.
"I think it's a fantastic place to visit. Our staff is really engaging and they really help you and your family have a magical time here," said Weddle.

The store’s core message: find gratitude in life’s sweet little moments.
"Sweet July started off as a mantra to find those things that bring joy into your life," described Curry. "It’s my call to action for people to figure out what makes your life sweet."
Intention is clearly behind every move at Sweet July, right down to the store's location in Oakland, California.
"We started our family here and it's a town that has always embraced us. I feel like Oakland deserves to have nice things," expressed Curry.
While visiting Sweet July, ABC7 News anchor Jobina Fortson immediately noticed the female authors and Black women-owned businesses on display.
"Absolutely," Curry replied. "We're extremely particular about the brands that we collaborate with or feature in the store.
Sweet July goes beyond the brick and mortar. It's a website, e-commerce, and even a quarterly magazine that's celebrating diversity, elevating emerging brands -- and the store basically brings those pages to life.
"Representation does matter," Curry said. "Sometimes it's just seeing a little bit of yourself in a situation you didn't know you could be a part of to give you that inspiration and push forward to know that you can."
For more information about Curry's brand, visit SweetJuly.com.

"We originally painted this mural to try and address the Asian hate going on," said Menace.
"This mural is a call for unity, because we noticed all the tensions between the minority groups," added Resa.
"So, we painted this in a pretty active gang neighborhood, and it got tagged over by I believe local gangs."
Menace continued, "We wanted to paint this so that we could bring everyone together, you know? And that was kind of like the most ironic thing that could have happened to this."
The mural design is also the inspiration for a t-shirt created to help raise money for the Feed SoCal campaign.
"We painted a unity mural for everybody out here, and we're happy to provide our art for people to wear," Menace said.
Menace and Resa believe that the most beautiful facet of graffiti art is that it transcends the boundaries of race, class or gender.
"I have mural concepts ready and when I find a space that fits the message, I'll put the message through. He'll outline the letters, and then I outline the faces or define our element of it," Resa explained.
"And after we outline it, we just fill it in, and then detail with shading and highlights."
Menace says they strive to use this powerful art form to spread positive energy wherever possible.
"Ideally, it'd be very nice if we could all just recognize that we're all just human beings. And because everyone's human, we should all respect each other no matter what."

The classes are open to all young people but focus on kids in underrepresented communities - by hosting workshops with major companies.
At Innovation Charter High School, inspiration is all around. Just ask fellow student Ashley Ortega, 15, who was featured in a Nike campaign, wearing sneakers she actually designed herself and hopes to inspire other girls to get in on what is a billion-dollar industry.
"To be the person who's like, 'Hey, a woman designed that' would be amazing," said Ortega.
"To be the person who's like, 'Hey, a woman designed that' would be amazing," said Ortega.
That sense of confidence is encouraged and applauded at KickNKnowledge, a program that teaches sneaker and fashion design to students in underserved communities.
George Duvel, founder of the nonprofit program, says the entire concept is a win, win - giving back to the community through something he's passionate about.
He started the nonprofit in 2019, after taking courses at the Fashion Institute of Technology and then teaching.
"If a brand could see this, a Nike or Adidas or any of these big brands, they could see the future, see what the consumer base is looking for in products," said Duvel.
Organizers of the program teach the kids a range of techniques, with an emphasis on using their own unique, personal stories as jumping-off points.
Among those students taking heed to those lessons is 17-year-old Jordan Habershan.
"I want to inspire the world," said Habershan. "I want stuff to be named after me."
Designing is just one part of this program. The broader end goal is to expose students to different parts of this industry, from marketing to production and even the retail side.
About 500 students across the city now take part in the program, there's also an after-school program and a virtual, global component. All in all, it's work that truly touches Duvel's soul.
"We've done a lot, but looking forward to do more and to impact more," he said.

"These kids go to so many events, and red carpet events every year and they usually wear a dress one time and they put it in the back of their closet," said Jennifer Tinucci, the event planner and publicist at Key Elements PR. "What better way to use those dresses than to be able to donate them to kids who want to go to prom, but don't have the resources for a dress."
Tinucci has organized the prom dress drive event since 2012, partnering with the non-profit A Place Called Home, which supports youth in the South Los Angeles area.
"I had a couple dresses from throughout the years that I donated," said actress Catherine Bailey, "I love girls feeling beautiful and confident about themselves. Dresses don't really make that, but they certainly help."
