Warhol Meets Beuys: Two Giants of Post-War Art | Sothebys Sothebys 2024-06-24 | Presented in partnership with United Kingdom Sotheby's International Realty, this powerful example of Andy Warhol's renowned silkscreen portraits, his portrait of Joseph Beuys, achieves a remarkable fusion of resemblance and individuality. Andy Warhol and Joseph Beuys, the towering figures of post-war art in America and Germany, first met at an exhibition opening at Galerie Hans Meyer in Düsseldorf in May 1979. The two artists crossed paths multiple times after their initial encounter, most notably during the installation of Beuys’s major retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in November 1979. It was on this occasion that the idea for this celebrated series of portraits was initiated. Beuys then visited Warhol’s studio, The Factory, to have his picture taken, coincidentally arriving at the very moment when Georgia O’Keeffe was being photographed. Warhol relied on his Polaroid Big Shot camera to immortalise the timeless image of Beuys in his distinctive and iconic felt hat and sleeveless jacket. Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby's Global Head of Science and Popular Culture, says it is the first time a specimen of this kind has been offered by a major international auction house. "This is an incredibly important discovery, and I don't know of another stegosaurus that matches the size and quality of this one." Hatton explains that Apex is approximately 11.5ft tall, 27ft long and 6ft wide - almost twice the size of Sophie, the Stegosaurus in London's Natural History Museum. "The quality of the fossil is excellent," she adds. A touchstone across more than four decades of painting remains Mitchell’s steadfast fascination with “remembered landscapes,” and her powerful allusions to places as far as Manhattan to Vétheuil conjure resplendent visions of her beloved environs.Throughout her life and work, Mitchell felt a kinship with the French Impressionists and European Post-Impressionists. By 1955, Mitchell began splitting time between Paris and New York, until 1967, when Mitchell inherited money after the passing of her mother, and was able to purchase La Tour, an estate in Vétheuil along the Seine. This move would mark a decisive turning point in her career: La Tour’s large space and high ceilings afforded Mitchell the ability to work on a larger scale, and, fully immersed in the natural world that she so loved, the stimulation of the French countryside proved immensely influential. Surrounded by Vétheuil’s beautiful landscape, Mitchell adopted what would become her signature aqueous palette of periwinkle and marigold, violet and ultramarine, and produced monumental works such as Noon and Ground.
